In addition to all of this, I have just completed my first career workout with Worktree at Lord Grey School. It was a fantastic session. It was just an hour out of my day, but I got to meet some great people from all professions and of course the students as well. The hour provides good insights as to how students can prepare themselves for the process of finding work and they had the opportunity to quiz me about my career and background. I didn’t have to prepare anything, it was good fun as well as valuable for the students.

I’ve also been baking , which for anyone who knows me well, knows that’s not a common occurrence. I received a lovely gift of a Chewy Ginger biscuit jar from Julie at JL Cakes. They are simply divine, and such a lovely gift to receive, fun to make! See page 19 for more details on how to order.

The persistent problem of incompetent and rogue traders in the UK’s home repair, maintenance and improvement market is the source of great distress, disruption and financial loss for many homeowners. It also causes huge political concern and frustration, and pernicious reputational damage for an entire industry where the good, hardworking majority are unfairly tarred with the same brush as the cowboys. Granny, can I live with you?

M

ost parents agree that bringing up kids is quite a challenge. Everything changes so quickly and you can soon lose face if you’re not up-to-date with the latest fads, phones and fashions. Imagine then what it’s like when grandparents suddenly become responsible for their grandchildren. Fifty or sixty years ago, when today’s grandparents were young, there were only three TV channels, personal computers didn’t exist and a tablet was something you got from the doctor. Today, there are over 60 channels on Freeview, well over a thousand on Sky and millions of pages on the World Wide Web and that’s before you think of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! Grandparents end up looking after their grandchildren for a wide variety of reasons, including bereavement or when a parent just can’t

cope. Sometimes, there are problems with drugs, alcohol, neglect or even abuse and occasionally the courts are involved. Whenever grandparents start looking after their grandchildren, they need to learn fast. They need advice and guidance from people who’ve faced a similar situation and they often need support. Many have turned to our local Milton Keynes based Kinship Group, which provides support to Grandparents and to other Kinship who’ve taken on ‘parental’ responsibility for a child or children. Founded in 2006, the group started with just a couple of Grandparents. Over the years, the group has grown and has attracted a number of speakers. No subject has been left unaddressed - discussions have included hormones, binge drinking and exclusion. It’s not all serious though as the group also arranges an exciting social calendar for its members.

Team Hen was founded in 2014 by Danielle Kendall after organising her best friend’s Hen Party. Unable to find items that differed from the usual feather boas and flashing sashes, she was inspired to create her very own handmade keepsakes. From the incredibly popular wish bracelets, to mirrors, badges and bespoke prints, Team Hen’s ethos is to offer the Bride to be and her Hen’s something that is original and stylish without being over glitzy. Mother of 2 young children, Danielle successfully built the business from home around her family commitments. In 2015, she won a Highly Commended ‘Mumpreneur UK’ Award and as demand has increased she has been able to employ a team of local MK mums on a part-time basis to join her on her journey. Danielle says “Running a small business means that each day

is different, add two children into the mix and it can be a challenge – but I love it! I’m so proud of what Team Hen has become and am excited for what the future holds for us.” Join Team Hen on Facebook and Instragram or visit us at www.teamhen.co.uk Special offer for Bletchley Buzz readers, Save 10% off your order by quoting BUZZ10

Emily Haig ~ Soprano Originally from Whaddon, near Milton Keynes, Emily is a highly accomplished musician, dancer and actress. She began her performing arts studies at a very early age in ballet, tap, modern, piano, violin, speech and drama and singing and since then has performed extensively in concerts and festivals. No stranger to hard work, Emily toured the UK with theatre companies for several years and now lives in Northampton from where she greatly enjoys life as a concert soloist. Emily has performed at large, outdoor classical proms concerts as a soloist and was thrilled and honoured to perform the National Anthem on behalf of the Football Association on two occasions for the FA Cup Final. In addition she is in huge demand for weddings and all other special family occasions and is often asked to perform with choral societies and choirs all over the country. Emily says “I love to sing to tell the story and to be the character within the song, and to really engage with my audience and to put over the song’s emotions, and I hope people go away feeling that I have done that. And of course, I love the glamour of dressing up as every show is a special occasion and knowing that I have made an effort with my appearance gives me added confidence. It’s a real privilege for me to sing as the bride walks up the aisle or whilst the couple are signing the register and to be a part of their special day.” To check availability or for more information please contact Louise Harris on 07980 996318 or email louise@louiseharrispr.co.uk and there is lots of information, video and audio files on Emily’s website www.emilyhaigsoprano.com

The Bride

Exochorda Macrantha

garden April is a busy time in the garden as plants are waking from their winter dormancy and there is a lot to be done in preparation for the months ahead. Seeds can be sown and lawns to mown, and a lot to enjoy as the spring flowering plants start to come into their own.

Jobs for the garden

Plant of the Month Exochorda x Macrantha , ‘The Bride’ There are several Exochorda species, all very beautiful Chinese shrubs when in flower, the best known being ‘The Bride’. When in flower, this deciduous shrub is just gorgeous. For about six weeks in April and May, its arching branches are wreathed in open white flowers that almost smother the soft, green foliage. In autumn the leaves turn delicate shades of yellow and orange. They need some shelter from late spring frosts, which can scorch the young foliage, and cannot tolerate a lot of lime in the soil. Although it will take some shade, it flourishes best in a sunny, open position. It can also be trained as a wall shrub and will grow to about 2 metres high. This shrub has been given the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.

• Get on top of weeds to prevent them seeding and becoming a problem. Hoe the border once a week. Perennial weeds, such as dandelions, need a weedkiller containing glyphosate to get rid of them permanently. • Start mowing the lawn once a week, beginning with the blades at the highest setting and gradually lowering them over the weeks. • Remove any faded flowers from early-flowering bulbs, especially daffodils. Leave the leaves to die down, remember don’t knot them even though they look untidy. • Sow carrots, peas, beetroot, broccoli, salad crops direct into the ground. Marrows, courgettes, squashes and tomatoes can all be sown in a heated greenhouse or propagator. • Climbers will grow quickly now, so ensure they have enough support, either against a wall or on a trellis or obelisk. • Now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails. They love delicious young shoots, so use pet-friendly slug pellets, liquid slug killer or ‘slug shocka’ to keep them away from your precious plants.

Proms in Campbell Park is back on Friday 19th August, jointly pre-

sented by Milton Keynes City Orchestra (MKCO) and The Parks Trust, for the fourth year running. This exciting, annual event attracts over 3000 people each year, with a first class, professional performance from the City’s own Orchestra, in the beautiful setting of Campbell Park’s Amphitheatre. This year the Orchestra will perform under the baton of their Music Director and Principle Conductor, Damian Iorio, who is currently developing the programme to include all of the favourites, with a few twists to keep the performance lively and the flags flying. Milton Keynes Prom couldn’t take place without the generous support of local companies, both MKCO and The Parks Trust are extremely grateful to this year’s sponsors so far: Handelsbanken, PJ Care, Geoffrey Leaver, Crispin Rhodes, NatWest Bank, CS2 and Yamaha.

“We are delighted to work with David Foster and his team again. This is now an annual fixture, much loved by the people of Milton Keynes, our sponsors and our musicians. It’s marvellous to experience thousands of people enjoying our music in such a beautiful setting and for both charities to raise money and further their education and outreach work in the community.” David Foster, Chief Executive at The Parks Trust, said: “The Proms in Campbell Park highlights everything a great British summer has to offer. It’s great to see how differently people make the most of the event, some with their elaborate hampers, people using it as an opportunity to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries to couples enjoying a romantic picnic in the evening sun. There really is something for everyone. This year it promises to be even better with a giant screen to show close-ups of the musicians and a fantastic firework display!” Tickets for the concert cost just £15 for adults, £8 for children or £38 for a family ticket and can be purchased online at www.theparkstrust.com or www.mkco.org. Alternatively, paper tickets can be purchased in person from both The Parks Trust and MKCO’s offices.

Willen Hospice Planning Petition We would like to call your attention to a planning application currently under consideration for a waste recycling plant to be situated on the strip of land adjacent to the Cotton Valley Sewage alongside Tongwell Street adjacent to Willen Lake. One of the unique features about Willen Hospice is the peace and tranquillity the location offers to both patients staying at the Hospice and their loved ones whilst visiting. As guardians of our patients’ experience, we feel passionately about preserving that environment for those we care for and would have concerns about any development that would adversely affect this environment for our patients and their families. We are sure the wider community of Milton Keynes would feel the same. If you would like to sign the petition regarding this application please visit the petition website https://www.change.org/p/ milton-keynes-council-stopthe-concrete-plant-proposedfor-willen-lake

Chicken & Leek Spud Pie

As spring gets under way, the vegetables that have stood all winter, providing food where lesser plants have failed, now begin to outlive their usefulness to the kitchen gardener. Any carrots beetroots or parsnips still in the ground will start to grow new leaves and then flower, rendering the root inedible. Similarly, leeks that are not dug up and eaten now will quickly bolt (grow flower heads) and develop a bitter flavour and a hard core. So now is the time to harvest what is left and make way for sowing new crops. Sometimes we do leave a few leeks in the ground so that they can go on to flower. Gardeners will be familiar with the pompom heads produced by alliums in the spring bulb garden and the leek, members of the same family, will delight you with the tallest, most impressive pompoms that you could imagine and the bees will be overjoyed too. In the autumn the pompoms turn into seed heads and as the wind blows, seeds are scattered around the garden. Gardening book on the subject give the impression that leeks need decent soil and a bit of mollycoddling to grow successfully. The experts seem to forget to mention that leeks will self-seed in cracks in the pavement if left to their own devices. So, at this time of year, not only do I dig up any remaining leeks that I deliberately planted last year but also those that have self-sown and are growing in less than ideal places. They may only be tiny but, unlike so many other weeds, they make a useful edible crop. A break in the weather is worth using for a bit of tidying up and therapeutic weeding, preparing the plot for the season ahead and resulting in a bucket full of tasty, tiny leeks to take home. Back in the kitchen these fashionably small leeks can be added to a stir-fry or roasted as whole baby leeks (5 minutes boiling followed by 10 minutes on a baking tray in the oven at 180째C, gas 4 drizzled in olive oil and sprinkled with salt). If you have had a roast chicken for Sunday dinner then make good use of your left overs and make Chicken & Leek Spud Pies for dinner on Monday

Chicken & Leek Spud Pies (serves 4). 4 baking potatoes Left over chicken Left over gravy Leeks Butter Salt & Pepper Grated cheese Preheat the oven to 200째C, gas 6. Scrub the potatoes then pat dry and rub over with a little sunflower oil and salt then

26

microwave for 10 minutes. Break up the cooked chicken into small pieces and mix with the left over gravy (or make some fresh and allow it to cool down before adding to the cold chicken). Cut the leeks into small pieces and boil for 5 minutes until tender then drain, reserving the cooking water, and allow to cool before adding to the chicken. Once the potatoes are microwaved, cut each one in half and spoon out the potato into a large bowl. Mash the potato, adding a splash of the

reserved leek cooking water, some butter and salt and pepper to taste. Spoon the chicken mix into the empty potato skins then top with a layer of the mashed potato and finish with some grated cheese. Bake in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until hot through and the cheese has browned nicely. Serve hot with vegetables.

In the letter, dated 12 July 1945, Eisenhower expressed his “heartfelt admiration and sincere Bonus Puzzle thanks”, stating that the intelligence from Bletchley Park had been “of priceless value to me”, had “saved countless British and American lives” and had “contributed to the speed with which the enemy was routed and eventually forced to surrender.” The letter hung in the Chief’s office during the tenure of Sir John Scarlett. He says “I was proud of this letter, but only came to appreciate the full significance of Eisenhower’s words after taking over as Chairman of the Bletchley Park Trust in 2012.” Today the letter takes pride of place at Bletchley Park, where it will be seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
