Hello

Bletchley Buzz is your local magazine for Bletchley, Fenny Stratford, Newton Leys and Newton Longville

Owner Claire Pilsworth Tel: 01908 464164 Advertising: claire@bletchleybuzz.co.uk Our main feature is written by Angie McAllister of AM Content, who also edits the magazine. If you’re interested in finding out more about what she does visit www.amcontent.co.uk

Well, as Summer is officially over, here is your Autumn edition of Bletchley Buzz. Autumn is a season that many of my good friends love as we move into the leaves turning colour, darker nights and events such as Halloween and Fireworks night. Since my last edition , I was fortunate enough to have a family holiday in Spain. Our holiday got off to an extra special start as one of the pilots was our neighbour! He welcomed us into the cockpit after landing to show us around. Read Andy’s story to see what a day in the life of a pilot is like on page 24. I know I mentioned that ‘C’ word last edition as people are starting to book parties and think about gifts. Turn to page 28 if you need some inspiration for a unique gift to buy this year. There’s lots to read about in this edition and you can even find out a little more about how Bletchley Buzz came about on page 22. Don’t forget to enter our competitions, and continue to send in details of your events and suggestions on what you would like to see. If you would like to post competition entries rather than email, please send to 2 Tunny End, Bletchley, MK3 6GZ. A big thank you to Angie from AM Content and to Andrena from our sister magazine Bee Local for helping to make Bletchley Buzz such a popular magazine. Happy Reading,

Claire Bletchley Buzz is P.S. Don’t forget the clocks go back an hour on Sunday 30th October reliably delivered by : The Leaflet Delivery Company

Are you ready for winter? The days are getting shorter and there’s an unmistakable chill in the air – yes autumn is here and it won’t be long until winter is upon us so it’s time to take a few simple steps to prepare for its arrival. Get your car in tip-top condition When the snow comes down the first casualties are often our cars, stranded by the roadside at best or succumbing to an accident at worst. It makes sense to fit your car with winter tyres, especially if you do a lot of driving, but at the very least check the tread and pressure of your current tyres. Give your car a once over, making sure your lights and wiper blades are working and the coolant and screenwash are topped up. It’s also worth asking a professional to check your battery if you suspect it may be on its way out. When travelling in inclement weather it’s a good idea to chuck a shovel, de-icer, a windscreen scraper and blankets, as well as water and some snacks, into the car just in case. Winter-proof your home The first thing to consider is your boiler. If you’re not up to date with your servicing, now’s the time to get it checked out. A broken boiler in the depths of winter can put paid to any festive spirit and finding a repairman working over Christmas is harder than avoiding leftover turkey. Now is also the perfect time to review your energy supplier, if you think you could be getting a better deal you’ll maximise your savings if you switch now. Bleed the radiators, check fireplaces and chimneys, fit draft excluders and if you’re considering improving your insulation, do it

8

now. It’s also worth checking your guttering and drains are in good working order to withstand the weather to come. Rug up and hunker down The changing of the seasons is the perfect excuse for a shopping trip. Take a look through your wardrobe, clear out the summer clothing and consider what needs replacing or updating for winter: think chunky jumpers, wellies and waterproofs to help see the family through the season. It’s also sensible to check your cupboards are well stocked with cans and non-perishable foods so that if we get hit by a snow storm you don’t have to venture out in it. You may also want to pick up some multivitamins, cold and flu medicines and alternatively remedies like Echinacea to help both fend off and deal with any illnesses doing the rounds when the weather turns. Once you’re all prepared, enjoy settling down in front of a fire (or a toasty radiator) and welcoming in the new season.

news WW2 Veterans see their work commemorated at Annual Reunion

Over 70 Veterans who worked in secrecy at Bletchley Park and its

outstations during WW2 were reunited on 11th September, 20. Former staff of the Government Code and Cypher School travelled from as far as Louisiana, USA, to attend the annual gathering. For many Veterans, the reunion was a chance to see their vital contribution recognised on a new Codebreakers’ Wall, featuring the names of former staff, as well as supporters of the Buckinghamshire heritage attraction. This proved to be an emotional experience for those who had been bound by the Official Secrets Act. “I’ve come today to look at the wall, I’m 90, so it will probably be my swansong,” said Joan Lever, a WAAF teleprinter operator who worked in Block E from 1944-1946. “The work was all codes and cyphers – we did not do anything in plain language. It never, ever got monotonous because we were so busy. At the time we just thought we were doing ordinary work, we did not feel clever.”

12

Standen added that the Codebreakers’ Wall is a way of raising vital funds for future development of the site, with bricks available to sponsor in the name of Veterans or supporters. “It also allows us to commemorate the Veterans themselves, so people can see their names recorded for posterity,” he said. Eric Jacobson, from New York, has visited the heritage attraction every year for the past decade and has a huge interest in the development of computing and Alan Turing’s work. “The importance of what happened here is still underestimated and it is terribly important to tell that story,” he said. The next episode of the Bletchley Park Podcast, out on 10 October, will feature interviews with those who attended the reunion.

Bletchley Improvements

Ringway are working in partnership with Milton Keynes Council Highways to start a Parking improvement programme in Queensway, Bletchley. Look here for further updates in the next edition.

Canapés at Capa

Capa Hair Studio (44 Aylesbury Street, Fenny Stratford) are undergoing a major refurbishment and will be closed between 10th October and 22nd October. Readers of Bletchley Buzz are invited to join Capa for a glass or two of Prosecco and some Canapés to celebrate the

re-opening of the salon. Come along, together with family and friends, between 5pm and 8pm on 22nd October. Capa will also have a raffle with some exciting prizes in aid of Willen Hospice and MKFM will be at Capa too to help celebrate.

Things that go bump in the night

taking place that evening at the theme park. Visit www.gulliversfun.co.uk for more. Pumpkin-tastic parties If your kids are looking to go trick or treating but you’d rather give them another focus for their Halloween fun, why not try one of the Halloween parties being held across MK. PopStory, at Unit 9 Studios in Wolverton, is hosting a children’s superhero Halloween party on Saturday 29th at 12.30 with disco karaoke, party games, dances, party bags, giveaways, arts and crafts and free squash. Kids are encouraged to dress as their favourite superhero or a spooky Halloween character. See www.popstory.rocks. At the same venue a few days later there will be another party, this time raising money for Emily’s Star. On Monday 31st between 4.30 and 6.30 there will be a two hour disco with free air hockey and table football.

From parties for kids to adult-only scares, Halloween is always a scream in MK. We take a look at some of the most frightful fun to be had in the city this October. Spooked up attractions Mead Open Farm has six ghoulish family attractions, including the new (and fantastically named) Shed of Dread for children of all ages to enjoy from 22nd to 31st October. Toddlers can explore the Creepy Cottage, daily ghost stories and puppet shows, whereas older children can hunt through the Haunted Hotel or try out Topper’s Twister. There will also be fancy dress competitions and the chance to carve a pumpkin. Find out more at www.meadopenfarm.co.uk. Take part in trick and treat week at Gulliver’s Land by joining the official trick and treat trail, sponsored by Swizzels, with lots of sweet goodies available as you follow the trail. Take a trip to Leonard’s Scare School or take part in a costume party during the week of 22nd October, and Saturday 29th is Happy Hauntings day with extra special entertainment and a meal included in the entrance fee. You’ll also find a fireworks display

Kids can run wild at Safari MK on 30th and 31st October, combining their soft play adventure with Halloween party games, buffet and disco as well as some spooktacular face painting. October. From midday until 10pm you can enjoy traditional Oktoberfest beers and some local real ales as well as the oom-pahs of a brass band and traditional foods. For more details see www.yorkhouse.org.uk and www.mkbiergarten.co.uk. Have a happy Halloween, whatever you get up to!

Lighting up the sky Grown-up frights Scream Parks are becoming increasingly popular and in MK we have a couple of great ones nearby. Tulleys The Howl in Leighton Buzzard is back for its second year featuring five huge haunted attractions full of live, terrifying creatures. The park is open various evenings from 8th November until Halloween itself – you can find full details at www.halloweenattractions.co.uk. Dr Fright’s Halloween Nights in Northamptonshire is another popular choice. This year the theme is Cinemassacre, drawing on 40 years of horror movie history to create a frighteningly fun evening of mazes and attractions. Open from 14th to 31st October, you can find out more on www.drfrights.co.uk. Looking for alcohol-based activities? The Zombie Pub Crawl returns to Stony Stratford on Saturday 29th October, with MK11 in Kiln Farm hosting an after party if you want to keep the party going after the pubs close. Not strictly Halloween themed but great fun none the less will be the MKBiergarten Stony Oktoberfest at York House Centre on Saturday 29th

As we head into November it’s time to mark Guy Fawkes’ failed gunpowder plot with a whole load. The biggest MK fireworks display will this year hit Campbell Park on Sunday 6th November at 7.30pm. It’s free entry and there’s loads of space so everyone gets a good view. As usual the fun fair is also in town at the same time so why not have a spin on the Waltzers afterwards? If you live out of town or you’re looking for something smaller Olney is holding its fireworks night on the same evening at the recreation ground behind the football club. Gates open at 5pm with the display starting at 6.30pm. Full details haven’t yet been released but in previous years the display has hosted a small fair, fire performers and a range of food and drink outlets including candy floss and mulled wine. This is a ticketed event, pick up your tickets beforehand to save money – find out where at www. theolneygroup.org. Milton Keynes Village Hall is hosting a local bonfire night event on 29th October, with bonfire lights from 6.30pm and fireworks lighting the sky from 7pm.

A friendly, welcoming group for anyone affected by disordered eating, including partners, family members and friends, who can also access the group independently. Milton Keynes resident, Emma Bacon, is celebrating the release of two books this September/October, which will be published in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia.

This group meets on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at the Swinfen Harris Hall, London Road, Stony Stratford, MK11 1JA, from 10am – 12pm for a suggested £2 donation per session.

Her first book ‘Rebalance Your Relationship with Food: Reassuring Recipes and Nutritional Support for Positive, Confident Eating’ is a cook book with a difference, offering 117 balanced recipes alongside nutritional advice and inspirational messages. Emma’s positive philosophy favors natural, unprocessed nutrition and moderation over elimination. Her book combines the experiences of real people affected by disordered eating, body image issues and low self-esteem with trustworthy advice to effectively support long-term positive change in how you interact with food and your body.

The group offers a safe, confidential, recoveryfocused environment and is facilitated by trained volunteers, many of whom have recovered from an eating disorder. The format of each session is the first hour focusing on a specific and relevant topic that will aid recovery, followed by an hour for informal chat and peer support. T: 07716 755804 E: info@balancedmk.co.uk W: www.balancedmk.co.uk

Emma’s second book, the ‘Eating Disorder Recovery Handbook: A Practical Guide to Long-term Recovery’ (written in conjunction with Dr Nicola Davies) promotes self-reflection, understanding and longlasting positive change. This book was inspired by the BalancED MK self-support group, Rebalance, run by Emma since 2007 – see www.balancedmk.co.uk for further information. Emma will host a book launch at the Cock Hotel in Stony Stratford on Wednesday 19th October from 19.30pm onwards, offering book discounts, author talks, recipe samples, charity raffle prizes and gift bags. Everyone is welcome to attend – entry is free. For further information about Emma’s personal experience of an eating disorder or to pre-order a copy of her book(s), please visit her website www.rebalancing-me.com.

My Story…by Claire Pilsworth At a crossroads? At the end of the last year so was I…and then I met Clare Wildman – a lady who (no exaggeration) changed my life. This is the story of how I reprogrammed my life, and how Bletchley Buzz came about! As a thirty-something working in the corporate world of sales, I enjoyed fine dining in top restaurants and staying in first class hotels around the world. Life was a dream, but when I experienced a string of major life events it became clear this wasn’t what I wanted any more. I needed to find a way to relax and switch off and I felt I was missing important time with my young family. Knowing I needed to make changes was one thing, but I didn’t where to start or even what I wanted to do instead. When I Googled ‘How to make life changes’ the first thing I came across was ‘life coaches’ and when I looked for a life coach in Bletchley, Clare Wildman was top of the list. I must admit I was a little skeptical when I first booked in. Clare was offering a free introductory session and I wondered how on earth someone would be able to help me decide what I wanted to do just from chatting to me when I didn’t have a clue! Clare was brilliant. I won’t go into detail about the session as everyone’s is different, but we sat and talked about what my life was like at the time and what I wanted it to be like. Using diagrams and white boards, she captured all of my thoughts to help me make sense of them. Clare was able to challenge me in a constructive way to break down some of my barriers against change. After the first session I felt like a weight had been lifted. In session two, we worked up a checklist for me to use when looking at job opportunities containing things that were important to me i.e. flexible working hours and helping others. When I saw a job, if it didn’t tick the boxes, it was to be discounted. Clare opened my mind to networking as a way to find career inspiration so I went to a few networking events and that’s where I met Andrena, who runs Bee Local, Leighton Buzzard’s community magazine. Chatting with her I quickly

22

realized that running a local community magazine ticked all of my boxes and was something I would love to do! Clare predicted when she met me that it wouldn’t take long for me to find what I wanted to do and she was right, with just a few sessions over a couple of months I found my new path which I truly love. I still check in with Clare regularly, but she taught me tools and techniques that mean I can apply them to help me make changes myself as and when I need to. I can’t recommend her highly enough. Do you want to make a change in your life? Do you find yourself sitting with your head in hands not knowing what to do? Or maybe you’re just feeling a bit fed up and need some focus? If so give Clare Wildman a call on 01908 368607 or book your free session through her website www.clarewildmancoaching.co.uk

A Day in the Life of a Pilot

by Andrew Wilson, First Officer at EasyJet A typical day for a pilot doesn't really exist. Our rosters vary each week, sometimes starting work at 5am or finishing at 3am! For this article I will take you through a flight I did a few weeks ago to Alicante and explain what we do as pilots of jet aircraft. Sadly since the terrorist events of 15 years ago it's impossible to allow the flying public into the flight deck during the flight, but please do come and say hello when we are parked up on the ground, we love to meet people and we don't bite! The day starts with a 3.20am alarm - I am not an early bird, I could happily sleep until midday, so a hot shower and a quick bite to eat wakes me up before getting my uniform on, grab my bag and head off to the airport.

southern Spain around 9000kg will be loaded into the aircrafts fuel tanks. That would fill the average family car 1500 times! Just before we leave the crew room we meet the cabin crew, chat about any pertinent pieces of information relevant to the flight, then head out to the aircraft. When the aircraft is completely shut down it takes around 10-15 minutes for all the systems the start up. Both pilots take turns flying the aircraft – for this flight I will be the pilot flying with my colleague operating the radios, making calculations and checking the outside of the aircraft for any damage. We have a computer called a flight management system, like a sat nav, which plans the route tells us how much fuel will be burnt. Once all the preparations are complete and we’ve run through the emergency procedures it’s time to go flying. Air traffic control give us our instructions to start the aircraft, taxi and line up on the runway ready to go. On the taxi out we do a few more checks and the last call we need from the cabin crew is to tell us everyone is sat down and ready to go. Air traffic give us our clearance to take off. At this point I push the thrust levers in the middle of the cockpit halfway forward, wait for the engines to settle at around 50% power then push them fully forward. This part of flight always brings out the young boy in me and the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. 35 seconds later I am pulling back on the controls and getting airborne. Once heading skyward, I switch the autopilot on. Autopilot is a great addition to any pilot’s set of tools, it doesn't replace the pilot but allows them to free up their attention and capacity whilst still

First I check in for the flight (even the pilots have to do this!) then print out the paperwork for the day which includes the flight plan. The skies above us are filled with a system of airways, the motorways of the sky, and the computer system picks out the best route to our destination. We also get the current weather and airports along our route. After we have reviewed all of this information we then decide on a fuel figure. For a flight to

following the flight plan. The airspace around London is quite busy so we both have to pay careful attention to the radio to make sure we hear our call sign.

INSIDE AND OUTSIDE PROPERTY MAINTENANCE

Once we get to our cruise altitude we do a system check to ensure everything is working correctly and then it's time for breakfast. I have to admit I don't think I have found a view from a restaurant that beats my table at 38,000 feet!

No Job too Big or Small • Patios • Tiling • Guttering • Painting & Decorating • Fencing • Laminated Flooring • Flat Pack assembly • Kitchen & Bathroom fitting

Throughout the cruise down to Alicante, we are both monitoring the systems for any changes and listening out on the radio for ATC changes. We also collect weather reports for airports along our routing in case we need to divert quickly for things such as ill passengers. On approach to the airport we need to slow down to land, this is achieved through flaps on the wings on the aircraft, as we get slower we extend more flap from the wing to allow us to land at around 140 mph. The cabin crew will be instructed to prepare the cabin for landing, clearing away all the rubbish, checking passenger seat belts etc, then our descent will start.

...If it’s not on the list above we can probably do it!

All interior & exterior jobs welcome All garden & maintenance work undertaken FREE QUOTES WITHIN 20 MILE RADIUS OF MILTON KEYNES

Please Call Nigel Marcham

07521 452089

On final approach to the airport the autopilot is disconnected and I manually fly the aircraft the last 5 miles to the runway. Once we slow down and vacate the runway a small follow me car appears to guide us to our stand, where the passengers disembark. Their adventures here have just begun, but sadly we have 30 mins to prepare the aircraft for its return flight.

In need of a vet?

The process for the return flight is exactly the same as the outbound flight and before I know it I am back at the departure airport. We file the paperwork then after thanking the rest of the crew head home, arriving at around 3pm. Having already being awake for nearly 12 hours it's time for some relaxation and dinner before an early night to repeat it all again the next day.

We’re one call away Vets Home Visit are available 24/7/365 Our senior vets with over 30 years worth of experience in small animal care will visit you in the comfort of your own home

Being a pilot involves a lot of long days, working unsociable hours but if it's a passion and love of all things flying, as it is to me, then it is all worthwhile knowing your passengers are happy and safely at their destination. For me it beats working in an office!

Guarantee a tax free cash lump sum for your child If you are looking into saving or investing for your child or grandchild’s future, or wish to set up a regular savings account for your new-born baby or young child, a Child Tax Exempt Savings Plan is a one great way to give your baby, child or grandchild a helping hand in life - providing them with a guaranteed tax-free cash sum at a time when they will need it most, for example to help towards university costs, a first car or a deposit on a property. It’s simple, you decide how much you want to pay in to the plan, from £15 - £25 a month. Then you can choose

how long you want to save for - between 10 and 25 years. Your decision on how long determines when the plan will mature - this can be any time after the child’s 16th birthday and after a minimum of 10 years. You can even select the exact day your child or grandchild will receive their tax-free savings sum - we find birthdays are very popular! Please be aware that the Child Tax Exempt Savings Plan is not suitable as a short-term savings plan and that only the child will have access to the savings in the plan. If the plan is cashed in prior to maturity or you stop paying contributions, then your child may get back less than you have paid in or nothing if this is in the first year.

Don’t waste your pumpkin As we enter October, thoughts turn naturally to Halloween celebrations. A key part of this will be the carving of a Halloween lantern. However, it is estimated that 18000 tonnes of pumpkins will end up in the bin after Halloween. It may not feel like it, but throwing away your pumpkin is a shocking waste of food, contributing to our national food waste figures. Viewed only as a Halloween ornament, pumpkins are actually amazingly versatile vegetables and can be used in many different ways in the kitchen from savoury recipes such as curry, salsa, soup, casseroles and stir-fries to sweet bakes and cakes.

However, that lack of flavour makes it wonderful for using in recipes because it takes on the other flavours. It can be grated into cakes in much the same way as carrot is used, or it can be steamed and mashed first and added to the batter of pancakes or drop scones. Here, the flavours of mixed spice work perfectly to make satisfyingly warming autumn bakes. If you use a candle inside your lantern the inside will get spoilt with soot and will quickly go mouldy. However, using an LED tealight is not only safer but will leave your pumpkin in good condition even several days after it was carved. Chop it up and steam it or throw it into curries and casseroles, make soup, grate it into cake or even make bread… just don’t bin it! With all the tasty things you can make from your lantern, buying a pumpkin this Halloween is a true bargain that just keeps on giving.

Plain boiled or steamed pumpkin is pretty gross. It is bland and the texture isn’t all that pleasant.

Pumpkin Pancakes

(makes 16-18) 200 g pumpkin 250g plain flour 1 ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda Pinch of salt 1 teaspoon mixed spice 55g light brown sugar 3 eggs 284 ml tub buttermilk 4 teaspoon sunflower oil Chop the pumpkin into cubes and place in a steamer for about 15 minutes. Once it is soft, blend it into a smooth puree and leave to cool. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, raising agents and

32

spice. In a jug, mix together the sugar, egg, milk, pumpkin puree and oil. Make a well in the centre of the flour and gradually mix in the wet ingredients until a batter forms. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and add about 60ml (4 tablespoons or 1/4 cup) of batter at a time. Cook until the base is set then flip and cook until the second side has set and browned. Either serve hot or cool on a wire rack for later. Can be reheated in a toaster for a quick breakfast.
