Hello again

Bletchley Buzz is your local magazine for Bletchley, Fenny Stratford, Newton Leys and Newton Longville

Owner Claire Pilsworth Tel: 01908 464164 Advertising: claire@bletchleybuzz.co.uk Our main feature is written by Angie McAllister of AM Content, who also edits the magazine. If you’re interested in finding out more about what she does visit www.amcontent.co.uk

Welcome to the Romance edition of Bletchley Buzz. It’s another packed edition..don’t worry though it’s not too gushy and there is something for everyone to read. However, If you are feeling a little romantic and looking to send the love of your life something nice why not pop into Floral Art & Design for a beautiful bouquet or maybe a stunning cupcake bouquet from JL cakes? Or what about making your own sweet gift? Read our feature on page 14 for more gift inspiration and places to celebrate. With the recent colder spell I know I am starting to look at summer breaks away and will be asking Harka from Not Just Travel to put some itineraries together for me. As well as planning a couple of breaks I am also planning to make some time to help Supershoes the charity I have chosen to support. It would be great to see them have some more volunteers this year. They are great at working out how to utilise people’s different skills so if you have any time to spare please get in touch.

As it is the romance edition what better time to bring up school proms, a nerve-racking time to ask that special someone to be your date. Do you know someone who will have their prom coming up this year? Tell them about the fabulous competition from The Dress Empire on page 19. Imagine winning a dress worth up to £300 for a prom! Do I sound old saying it was different in my day? Hope you enjoy reading this edition, Claire

Here is the news from Supershoes

For the love of shoes

“Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” We’re here to send all the love, all the hope and all the rainbows we can. We’d love you to join us too, if you’d like to. With that in mind, here’s a question for you: what do you love to do, and how could you raise money for a pair of Supershoes by doing it? If you’d like to speak to us about your idea, we’d love to hear from you. Or just go ahead, and do it! Our office number is 01908 274 944 or you can contact us via our website: www.supershoes.org.uk. Wishing you as much love and romance as you would like this February. Until next month, with peace, love and gratitude, Sarah

Hello again from me, Sarah, at Supershoes. This month’s Bletchley Buzz is all about romance and so I was trying to work out where romance fits into the Supershoes agenda. After all, there’s nothing at all romantic about childhood cancer. But hang on a minute: romance is really about love, isn’t it? And one thing we do exceptionally well here at Supershoes is to send out heaps and heaps of love. It goes like this: our Super Brave children are referred to us, with love, from a very supportive team of social workers and other charities. Their details are lovingly recorded, and then we play matchmaker to marry up the child’s special interests with the perfect Super Artist who loves to paint the things the child loves. With a warm, warm heart, the Supershoes are painted, created, laced with hope and returned to us, and lovingly sent on to a child who deserves all the love in the world, at a particularly tough time in their young life. All that love is reflected right back when we see the look on their face as they receive their gift. Not for nothing does our logo feature rainbow laces. As the great Maya Angelou said:

After 58 years at Freeman Memorial Hall, the 40 plus members of Bletchley Evening Women’s Institute are moving to larger premises at St Andrews Baptist Church, Buckingham Road, Bletchley. We meet on the 1st Thursday of every month at 7.30 pm. Newcomers are welcome. For further details contact our Secretary on 01908 379675. Congratulations! The romance of Milton Keynes “Love is in the air, everywhere I look around” sang John Paul Young in his one and only international hit and while you might not expect such a statement to be true of a new city like Milton Keynes, we have many more romantic hotspots than you might think. This Valentine’s Day forget Paris, ditch Venice and instead take a romantic tour of good old MK. Here’s some of our favourite local lovers haunts but we’d love to hear yours – share your pics and ideas with us on Twitter @BletchleyBuzz and we’ll retweet our faves.

Arty MK

Stowe

The gardens at Stowe make a fantastic choice for a romantic day out. Take the Path of Vice into the garden of love (all sounds a bit Fifty Shades doesn’t it, but the garden pre-dates the novel by a cool three centuries) to check out the temples alluding to stories of seductive women, sordid goings-on and partying to excess! Stroll hand in hand around the lake, share a stolen kiss in one of the many follies and see yourselves reflected from the Palladian Bridge. Perfect!

Spa time

Not far from the MK boundaries you’ll find a couple of stunning spas. Whittlebury offers some super offers for twilight heat and ice experiences where you can enjoy a bubbly hot tub followed by a glass of bubbly and nibbles with your favourite person. The relatively recently-opened Aqua Sana at Woburn Center Parcs is another nearby alternative offering experience rooms ranging from foot spas to work on those sensual pressure points, to an outdoor infinity pool overlooking the complex, as well as our favourite, the large balcony equipped with snuggly sofas and blankets – the perfect place to share a quiet moment.

14

If your lover is a fan of art and sculpture, visit the Parks Trust website and gen up on the many pieces of art dotted around Campbell Park, then take them on a tour and impress them with your knowledge of the MK art scene. Make sure you don’t miss the Light Pyramid, which is lit for a few hours each evening at dusk, and you’ll also find fantastic views across the city from that spot. Tie in a showing of one of the three Exhibition on Screen films at Independent Cinema MK, focusing on artists such as Monet, to top off the arty theme.

Tree Cathedral

Tucked away close to bustling Willen Lake is the Tree Cathedral. Designed to reflect the outline of Norwich Cathedral, this peaceful wooded area is ideal for a stroll hand in hand down the aisle. Depending on the weather, you may even be lucky enough to see the first flowers popping out of the ground, representing the stained glass of the cathedral. And if you’re swept away by the romance of the place, the cathedral can also be hired for wedding blessings.

DIY Valentine Gift - Fudge

Whether you’re looking for a traditional Valentine’s gift or something a little out of the ordinary you won’t have to step outside of Milton Keynes to find it.

Make this as a treat for your Valentine. Pop it in a pretty box with a big bow and they will be yours forever…as long as you don’t eat it all first!

Flowers: Pick up a bunch of red roses or try one of Floral Art & Design’s Valentine’s bouquets. www.floralartdesign.co.uk Chocolates: Whether it’s a traditional box of choccies or a more elaborate creation, place an order with MK Chocolate and you’re bound to find something special. www.mkchocolate.co.uk Cupcakes: Looking for something sweet to tempt your loved one? JL Cakes make fabulous cupcake bouquets that look just like flowers but are actually tasty cakes. Check them out on their Facebook page @JulieLomasCakes

Or why not try… Word cloud art: For a really personalised gift select the words that mean the most to you as a couple and ask B81 Designs to create a piece of framed word cloud art just for you. It’ll act as a reminder of your love all year round. www. b81designs.com Photos: What better way to capture the essence of your relationship than with a couple’s photoshoot. It’s probably best to let your loved one know on Valentine’s Day that you’ve booked a shoot for a few weeks’ time rather than springing it on them without warning – you may not be forgiven! Try MK based www.1stimpressionsphotography.co.uk Ceramics: How about a personalised mug, vase or photo frame featuring your names and perhaps even your fingerprints. At Chiki Ceramiki you can create personalised gifts including silver jewellery and casts. See www.chikiceramiki.co.uk Theatre tickets: Make sure you get a back seat row to see a romantic show at MK Theatre. Matthew Bourne’s take on the movie The Red Shoes is playing on Valentine’s Day and could be a great option for a date night. www.atgtickets.com

A cooking thermometer is ideal but if you don’t have one use the method below. Ingredients 100g butter 550g light muscovado sugar /or Demerara for a lighter flavour. 200g golden syrup 350ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract ¼-½ tsp sea salt flakes Method Line a tin about 23 x 23cm / 9inches x 9 inches with greaseproof paper. Melt the butter, sugar, syrup and cream in a medium-sized, high-sided heavy-based pan. Keep stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to a simmer (without stirring) over a mediumlow heat and cook, stirring only occasionally until it reaches 116C, stirring more regularly after it reaches 100C and turning down the heat if it begins to catch. Take off the heat and beat in the vanilla and salt with a wooden spoon, then continue beating until the fudge has thickened and lost its shine. Add any ingredients such as raisins, chopped nuts, or chocolate chips at this point. Pour into the tin and leave to set. Once it’s firmed up a little, after about an hour, slice into squares and leave to cool completely. Best kept refrigerated. If you don’t have a cooking thermometer. Have a bowl of iced water and a metal spoon ready next to the cooker. As the mixture begins to simmer beat it more regularly then periodically take ¼ -½ tsp of the fudge mixture and plunge the coated spoon into the bowl of iced water. Then (still under the water) use your fingers to roll the mixture into a little ball. When it forms a soft, pliable ball it’s ready to take off the heat and continue with the recipe.

Make Success a Habit -

7 Habits of Successful People (that anyone can copy)

Everyone has their own definition of ‘Success’ but being ‘successful’ or achieving a positive outcome is something we all aspire to at one time or another. Whether it be making money, becoming famous, enjoying more holidays and family time, more security or a combination of these, success equals achieving our own desired result. Have you ever wondered though, how some people seem to achieve everything they aim for, sometimes seemingly, with little effort? Based on over twenty- five years working with people and businesses, I have established that these people have seven habits in common, and by incorporating these you too can significantly improve your own chances of success in all areas of life. Successful People: 1. Put Themselves First They know the importance of investing in themselves

by looking after their health, eating well, sleeping well and making time for their friends and families. 2. ‘Keep Their Map Book Open’ They know where they are going and how to get there, but they appreciate that circumstances could mean they need to change direction. They always have a ‘Plan B’. 3. Spend Less Than They Earn However little they can spare, successful people always set something aside for a rainy day. 4. See ‘Feedback’ not ‘Failure’ Sometimes things don’t go according to plan but successful people learn from their mistakes, treat problems as opportunities and keep going. 5. Know When and How to Say No Taking on too much and becoming overwhelmed is

one of the most common reasons for dissatisfaction or unhappiness in all aspects of life. Being able to say ‘no’ without burning bridges, leaves you with more time to focus on the things that matter to you. 6. Apply the 80:20 Principle That is, they direct their effort and energy to the 20% of things, that make an 80% difference to their lives. 7. Believe in Themselves As Mahatma Ghandi once said ‘people often become what they believe themselves to be’ Believing that you are a success can be the first step towards achieving it. How much you achieve is down to you but the single most important key to success is taking action. So, don’t just read about these habits, start developing them today and start getting the life that YOU want.

Love Yourself As we move into February our thoughts turn to love and romance. From finding a partner for life to appreciating our soul mate. However, as Whitney Houston used to sing, the greatest love of all is loving ourselves.

It never ceases to amaze me how much harder we can be on ourselves than on those around us. I often hear people beating themselves up and yet if someone else had done/not done or said/not said the exact same thing they would think nothing of it. This February why not start a new tradition for Valentine’s Day and make it ‘love yourself’ day. If you were to show appreciation and love for yourself just how would you want to do it? Take some time to think about it; what would make you feel truly loved and cared for? • • • • •

20

Your favourite meal A glass of bubbly A long hot soak in a candlelit bath A bunch of flowers An evening curled up with a book

• Watching your favourite film • Listening to music • A pampering session • Booking a holiday • Switching off the phone, computer etc Whatever feels right for you, do it! If you don’t feel the love for yourself right now then a great way to build it is to make a ME book. Use it to record all the things about yourself that are good (these are the bits we often forget) and refer to it whenever you are feeling unsure, unloved or low in self-esteem. It might include some of the following: • Achievements/successes • Your good qualities • Compliments you have received • Things you have done • Things you are proud of • People you love • Plans for your future Make sure you only record the things you feel are good here. Then use it for an instant boost as and when needed. Try to remember to add to it, especially to include compliments and nice things people have said about you as these are the things we forget the quickest. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Since their formation nearly 30 years ago, their presence has been a necessity. In essence the vehicle for the observations, ramblings and creations of front-man Nigel Blackwell, they are a counterblast to the processes of modern life. Throughout changing times they have spanned the decades, released 13 full-length albums and dropped a thousand-and-one pop culture references; from BBC Radio's Charles Nove to former England cricketer Fred Titmus.

Their approach to promoting their music is famously non-existent – a handful of UK gigs each year is normal. Even rarer are interviews of any kind. Blackwell himself states his biggest achievement, as "creating a situation for myself whereby I can get up of a morning and decide to go and tackle Bwlch Pen Barras on the bike, rather than report to a superior to await orders". Their existence is somehow outside of the modern world, yet also a reaction to it. Merely by continuing to release and perform, Half Man Half Biscuit

serve a greater purpose – to rally against the crap that life throws up with a wry smile, and also to take joy in life's small and simple pleasures. Back in 1985, Half Man Half Biscuit sat comfortably at the top of the indie album chart. Tickets Available from: Box Office No: 0844 477 2000 www.academymusicgroup.com /o2academyoxford/events/88641 4/half-man-half-biscuit-tickets Tickets (advance) - £20.00 Doors – 6.30pm/ Stage – 7.00pm

Closing date to 5pm Tuesday 28th Feb 2017. One winner will be randomly selected from the correct answers.

What year did Half Man Half Biscuit top the Indie chart? a) 1985 b) 1975 or c) 1995 Terms and conditions apply: Prize is valid on 18th March only. ON THIS SPRING AT MK THEATRE

Fantastic Mr Fox 7th -11th March 2017

Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox Written by Roald Dahl Adapted for the stage by Sam Holcroft Boggis, Bunce and Bean, three greedy, smelly, horrid farmers hate the cunning Mr Fox. Mr Fox is smart, clever and rather fantastic, but he doesn’t realise how determined the farmers are to get revenge. Can he hatch a plan to save his family and friends? Can they outrun the diggers and outsmart the farmers? And can Rabbit shut up long enough not to give the game away?

generously with his friends and family. I was careful to include these themes in the script, too. In fact the whole play centres around Mr Fox and his friends, and how their willingness to share and work together saves the day. How do you do justice to a great and well known writer like Dahl without copying the dialogue word for word? It’s very hard to do justice to such an extraordinary writer, impossible probably. It was very daunting! But you can only do your best, and I tried very hard to capture the spirit of the book, rather than copying word for word. By ‘spirit’ I mean that I tried to recreate how the book made me feel: I felt love for Mr Fox and his friends, I was afraid and excited by his race for survival, and I was delighted that he succeeded and celebrated with his friends, at the end, while the farmers suffered in the rain because of their obsessive greed. Which of the characters do you think is the… Silliest? Rabbit. Smartest? Mr Fox. (Badger is very clever, too) Nastiest? Farmer Bean. Friendliest? Mole. Most sensible? Mrs Fox.

Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox is family fun at its finest. A tale of greed, pride and the power of friendship, this flagship production for the Roald Dahl 100 celebrations promises a huge theatrical feast with live music and songs, ideal for the whole family.

Q&A with Stage Adaptor, Sam Holcroft What do you love best about this story? Roald Dahl has written a brilliant action adventure story, with really high stakes for Mr Fox and his friends. I love that Mr Fox is pushed to the limit of his abilities and must find ingenious ways to outsmart the horrible farmers. What do you think are the most important themes, and how did you go about bringing these out in your script? In the book, Roald Dahl explores the theme of sharing with others versus being greedy. The farmers are greedy while Mr Fox shares

Just For Men Under pressure: Behold, the most romantic day of the year. The (apparently) most romantic day of the year is approaching. And it appears that this one is all on the boys. I often wonder how you cope, with the Milk Tray man diving through windows, the extreme and creative proposal ideas flying round online, the expectation that for this one day you men will become the ‘kings of romance’. That is of course on top of the day to day pressures of real life, which continues around you at an astounding rate. I wonder how many of you guys reading this have noted that magazine left open on the coffee table, the suggestions of places to eat, films to watch, or the social media gauntlet of romantic tales, challenges and impossible feats that pressurise you at every opportunity? You can’t do it all and if you feel like you have to, then we need to revisit that expectation you have of yourself, or the way you cope with

the expectations you perceive that others have of you. Pressure to ‘perform’ is something an increasing number of men worry about, but there is nothing romantic in burning yourself out. Or feeling so exhausted by life’s constant challenges that find yourself really stressed out. So somewhere in between it all do try to take time for you, because this is ok to do. In fact it’s essential. Take time to recharge and look after yourself - it’s really not just for girls. This is a note to acknowledge you. ‘The man.’ There is some immense pressure out there for menfolk, but there is also support, a way forward and a better way. Growing Peanuts As for the rest of the bag of unroasted monkey nuts, these can be roasted in their shells as a single layer on a large baking tray in a preheated oven at 180°C, gas 4 for 25 minutes and enjoyed, shelled as a snack. A bowl of freshly roasted monkey nuts, an empty container for the shells, a beer and a game of football on the telly seems to lead to a very happy husband and is perhaps the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day.

As a keen kitchen gardener I find a rising urge within me at this time of year to get back out in the garden and to get things growing. There are three jobs I usually try to get done sometime around the February half-term. As well as sowing leek and tomato seeds, I also sow a few peanuts. The British weather is not really suited to growing peanuts but it is a bit of fun and an educational experience. If you have a greenhouse then all the better but if not I would still say give it a go, just don’t expect to be chomping into a huge bagful of peanuts by the end of summer.

Recipes by JamMooKow

Firstly, buy yourself a bag of unroasted (that’s important) monkey nuts from the supermarket. You only need about 3, from which you can plant 6 peanuts into individual small flower pots. Pop the pots onto a windowsill and keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t dry out. They should germinate in a few days and over the weeks you will need to pot them on into larger flowerpots. They make rather attractive houseplants and during the summer the plants produce small yellow flowers. If the flowers are pollinated then, unlike any other plant I know, a long stem grows out of the dying flower and heads downwards until it finds the soil. There it buries itself and in due course a new monkey nut forms underground – hence the other name: “ground nut”. If you don’t have the space to keep them indoors they can be planted outside in June and should continue to grow well until the first autumn frosts. Then it is time to dig around and find the hidden treasures of peanuts at their feet.
