CHARGE IN TO SPRING WITH MILTON KEYNES RACE FOR Cara Waller, Cancer Research LIFE Milton Keynes women fired up by the arrival of spring are being urged to channel their energy into training for Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

With lighter evenings on the horizon, and with warmer weather on its way, women of all ages, shapes and sizes have the perfect opportunity to kick-start a healthier lifestyle by preparing for their 5k, 10k or Pretty Muddy Race for Life events. By taking on Race for Life, and encouraging their mums, daughters, sisters and friends to join them, participants can improve their fitness as well as help to raise money for lifesaving research. Becoming more active has longer-term benefits, as research shows that even regular moderate physical activity can help reduce the risk of cancer. Not only does it help to maintain a healthy body weight but it also has a protective effect in itself.

UK’s Milton Keynes Manager, said: “Signing up to take part in Race for Life is a great way for women of all ages to commit to get a little more active this spring. “Race for Life events are noncompetitive. Taking part is not about being fit or fast and participants can choose to walk, jog, or run around the course. The atmosphere is incredibly supportive.

Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across Buckinghamshire.

Cara continued: “With the arrival of lighter evenings, there’s no better time to enjoy the great outdoors, get a bit fitter and limber up for Race for Life. news Cook Offs and Canapes

The Brasserie at Milton Keynes College played host to two prestigious and competitive contests during the recent Easter break with top professional chefs and gastronomic stars of the future both taking to the kitchen. First to take to the spotlight on Wednesday 6th April were the professionals, taking part in the annual MK Food Awards Chef of the Year. Taking the form of a cook-off, the event was separated into three rounds – a mystery box challenge for starter, main

course of their choosing and a dessert that had to include a chocolate fondant and a cheesecake. Eight chefs representing restaurants from across Milton Keynes took part in the event with a panel of prestigious judges tasked with tasting and scoring their efforts in secret. Having provided their scores, the overall winner will be revealed at the MK Food & Leisure Awards on 8th May at Woburn Sculpture Gallery. Twenty-four hours later and it was the turn of the students from MK College to demonstrate their growing talents with a canapé contest in partnership with industry leaders Pidy UK. The students were tasked with designing and presenting unique canapés, which would be served at the MK Food & Leisure Awards in May to all the event’s esteemed guests and nominees. Prior to the event, the College’s learners had each

spent time developing their ideas and practicing their delivery before being assessed by another panel of expert judges. On this occasion it was Level 2 student Hannah Andrews who impressed the panel with her creativity, passion and skill, securing the honouring of seeing her canapés come to life at the Awards ceremony. The Brasserie at Milton Keynes College is full, commercial restaurant based at the College’s Bletchley campus where Hospitality and Catering students are provided with the opportunity to cook and serve top-class dishes to paying customers. Find out more about The Brasserie and the College’s current Hospitality and Catering study programmes.

CAREER WORKOUT GOOD FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, GOOD FOR BUSINESSES How can giving up an hour of your work day be good for your productivity? When it’s answering young people’s questions about what you do and why.

‘CAREER WORKOUT’ is a new scheme to develop the aspirations and employability skills of young people...and also boost employees’ motivation. Developed by employability education charity Worktree, and currently being piloted in Milton Keynes, it brings diverse work guests into a school classroom for an hour to be interviewed by a carousel of students, speed-networking style. Since September 2015, nearly 3000 school students aged 11-18 and 400 guests from the world of work have taken part. “It was easy, interesting and fun,” said Kate Webster of Hewitsons. “I came back feeling I’d done something worthwhile.” “Our staff have enjoyed attending a range of schools,” said Tim Richards, Head of Hewitsons’ MK Office, “but more important, our staff have witnessed the positive impact Worktree is having in influencing children’s career choices.” John Attley, Manager of Employee Engagement and Corporate Responsibility at NHBC, cosponsors of Career WorkOut, said: “We are delighted with feedback from the schools showing a dramatic positive impact on student aspirations and drive. Tony Nelson, Headteacher, The Hazeley Academy said: “Feedback from our students and staff strongly suggest that Worktree’s Career WorkOut sessions have had a dramatic positive impact on student aspirations, personal vision and drive. In over two decades in education I have not come across a more effective programme for achieving these goals across such a wide range of students for so minimal investment in terms of time and money.”

Biological Warefare

I

’m a huge fan of biological warfare.

But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners. Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters. Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses.

and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%. Frogs and toads are great slug-eaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground. Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself.

are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips. All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment. Of course with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful...

We meet on the evening of the second Tuesday of each month at 7.45pm at Freeman Memorial Methodist Church Hall, Buckingham Road, Bletchley MK3 5HH. During the summer months we participate in visits to gardens and nurseries. See our current programme on our '2016/2017 Programme' page. For our May meeting we will be going to Cottage Garden Nursery in Cardington.

Over the years we have participated in the West Bletchley carnival, held in early June by hosting a stall which positively groans with

members’ lovingly-raised surplus plants for sale. We now also attend 'Love Bletchley' days, with the next one on 7th May. These are fundraising events which enables us to keep our subscription fees at a minimum. Monthly topics include many gardening aspects, including composting, beneficial insect and animal life, flower arranging, quizzes and slide show presentations from respected speakers from educational and institutional organisations and charities, including the National Trust, as well as summer and winter socials and private visits to various gardens, both local and more distant. Various day trips have been arranged including Kew Gardens, Garden Organic (formally known as Henry Doubleday Research Association) at Ryton and also to Wisley RHS gardens plus Birmingham Botanical Gardens for members and their

guests. All these have been sell out successes. New trips are being planned for summer 2016. In 2009 we inaugurated 'The First Bletchley Seed Swap' event where gardeners and other interested people could bring and swap 'home collected' or surplus bought seeds, or just take away seeds to grow for a small donation. Carrying on from the success of this,we have been holding seed swaps every year since. Membership is just ÂŁ8 per year, with minimal charges applying when guest speakers are arranged. Honeybread Sandwich Biscuits

You might expect to get a cold during the winter but when spring arrives and the sun comes out and you find yourself struck down with the sniffles, you feel a bit cheated by the seasons somehow. When your throat feels as if it is on fire you might think that water would be the right thing to put it out, but no. I had drunk so much my belly was beginning to feel like a water balloon and yet the fire raged on. Maybe it was the cotton wool that had replaced half my brain that was slowing down my thought processes but suddenly through the fog I realised I should be drinking honey and lemon instead. Sometimes mother really does know best and my mum always recommends honey and lemon for a sore throat and it really does work wonders, slipping over the pain like a silk handkerchief.

22

I happen to be fortunate enough to have a friend who keeps bees so I always have a jar of local honey in my cupboard. Carol is based in Bow Brickhill and her honey is on sale at Hunter’s Farm Shop on the A5 roundabout and at Virtual Orchard in Wolverton. Soon I was comforting myself with a soothing glass of warm honey and lemon and feeling vaguely human again. For this service I think it is only fair that we should help the bees in return. There has been a lot of talk in the news in the last few years about the decline of bees and it is something we need to take seriously. It is not just about a decline in honey production; bees are key pollinating insects. And that includes all the other bees too – not just the honeybees. Without pollinators our food crops would fail.

So, to help our bees we can find space to grow some flowers – particularly wildflowers. It helps if we can correctly identify bee species so we don’t mistake them for things such as wasps and try to swat them. Most bee species don’t live in hives but instead live on their own and can make nests in something as simple as a hole in the ground so leaving wild areas in our gardens with inviting hidey holes can be beneficial.

Sometimes bees just run out of energy so if you ever see a bee on the ground, give it a sip of honey or fruit juice to revive it.

Why not enjoy a taste of local honey with these lovely biscuits? Honeybread Sandwich Biscuits (makes 20-24 biscuits) 200g unsalted butter 300g plain flour 3 ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 ½ teaspoon ground ginger Pinch of salt 100g honey plus 2 tablespoons 1 large egg Preheat oven to 200°C, gas 6 and grease two large baking sheets. Weigh out 100g of the butter and cut into pieces. Put the butter in a bowl and add the flour. Rub the butter and flour together until they take on the consistency of breadcrumbs. Stir in 3 teaspoons of cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of ginger and a pinch of salt. Add 100g honey and the egg then mix together with your hands, gradually bringing it together into a ball of dough. Roll out the dough and use a medium sized pastry cutter to cut out biscuits. Place the biscuits onto the trays and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until golden. Remove from the tray onto a wire rack and leave to cool. In the meantime, soften the other 100g of butter in a bowl then add ½ teaspoon each of ground cinnamon and ginger and 2 tablespoons of honey. Stir well to make spiced honey butter. Once the biscuits have cooled, smear the honey butter onto the biscuits and sandwich them together with another one until all the biscuits have been paired.

Does your little one like to get their hands dirty? Do they enjoy helping out? Do they like playing in the garden? Then maybe you should consider the Dobbies Little Seedlings Club? It is a freeto-join gardening club where youngsters aged 4–10 years

of age learn about plants, wildlife and the environment. When each Little Seedling joins, they are given a free welcome pack with a special children’s lunch offer to be used in stores. There are also Little Seedlings Club workshops that take place at the Dobbies store on the first Sunday of every month. Sessions start at 10am, 11.30am and 1.30pm and each last for 30 minutes. These workshops are very popular so advanced booking is required. All you have to do is call Dobbies on 01908 364890 to book your place. Bookings can only be made in-store or over the

phone. You do not have to be a member of The Little Seedlings Club to attend the workshops.

Dobbies Milton Keynes has announced its new local charity partner as Emily’s Star. Emily's Star charity was created in memory of Emily Elizabeth who tragically died aged 26 days old from Edwards Syndrome.Over the past few years, charities have held events in Dobbies such as fun days with cupcake decorating and fancy dress competitions to raise money. Steven Purton, Community Champion for Dobbies Milton Keynes, said: “As a store, we’re really excited to begin working with Emily’s Star and to see what new and inspiring ideas they have. Our customers have always been incredibly generous, and I know this is a cause they will be keen to rally behind.” For the first time, Dobbies’ Local Charity Partners will also be benefitting from the 5p carrier bag charge, which will give fundraising efforts an extra boost. There are already other activities and events in the planning too ranging from Childrens Paw Patrol Party to Biscuit Baking.

place in the holidays to help support Emily’s Star. The next clubs will run in the summer holidays from 11am - 12noon. It’s free to attend and no booking is required however, a donation of 50p towards charity is very much appreciated. Your little ones will love hours of pla with a chance to make new friends whilst you sit and relax. Last year, Dobbies Milton Keynes teamed up with Keech Hospice Care to raise over £700. Get into the garden this summer – not in a flap! Spring has sprung and the

weather is getting warmer, it’s time to get the lawnmower out and check over the BBQ ready for a lovely summer, that is if you are not scared stiff of flying creatures such as insects, bees, wasps, birds, moths or butterflies.

For many people reading this, fear of these things might seem a little silly, and even for someone with a fear it might seem a bit daft, however that doesn’t stop you being scared. Even feeling that you are being a bit daft is no comfort when everyone is having fun outside and you are stuck inside. How do those wasps know you’re scared? They always seem to

make a “bee” line for you sorry I just had to do it!

Control

Perspective

You may think that the root cause of all of these fears is some event that happened to you that triggered off the phobia, however fear of all of the above have one thing in common and that is that you feel out of control and have a massive desire to be in control of that situation.

We are viewing the world and experiences through our own unique perspective and our own belief system. You firmly believe that wasps or bees are scary and you find evidence to support that belief, but the thing is it’s not real it is only a belief that you that you are creating and maintaining.

Powerful or powerless?

Change

Most of the other people who are out enjoying the the garden or a BBQ don’t process the experience of meeting the bee, wasp, bird etc. in the same way as you, they feel more in control and feel that they have the skills and resources to deal with the situation. Both of you are experiencing the same thing, yet one person feels powerful when they see a wasp whereas you feel powerless, so which one is real?

The good news is that this is easy to change. We can process experiences in a more helpful and empowering way when we manage our thinking well. The Thrive Programme is a 6 week course that can rid you of fears and phobias, so don’t get in a flap this summer and miss out on all the fun learn how to Thrive instead!

It is 35 years since Bucks Fizz stormed to the top of the charts around the world after winning The Eurovision Song Contest for the UK with the skirt ripping song “Making Your Mind Up”! The Band’s line up is classic Eurovision – two boys, two girls, dance routines, harmonies and extravagant outfits. Originally put together as the perfect winning act, Bucks Fizz went far beyond their original Eurovision remit and as one of the biggest selling bands of the 80’s became a global phenomenon. “Making Your Mind Up” became a number one hit across the world selling more than four million copies. The legendary

skirt-ripping routine propelled them to overnight success charting at No. 1 in 9 countries beyond the UK. Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston are joined by Bobby McVay, himself a Eurovision veteran having represented the UK in 1983 with the band, Sweet Dreams, singing “I’m Never Giving Up”, which came a credible sixth in the competition. Cheryl says, “I cannot believe it is 35 years we won The Eurovision Song Contest! We are looking forward to celebrating with fans old and new. We recreate our familiar hits both vocally and visually which takes the audience on a nostalgic journey back to the 80’s.”

My little fighter Bella- Skye was born 11 weeks early, weighing a tiny 3lb 1oz. After an excruciating 8 week stay in neonatal, Bella- Skye suffered from group B strep, which quickly led to meningitis. Not in my wildest dreams did I think this would ever happen to me, I definitely took for granted assuming I would have a healthy baby. Bella - Skye was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy just before her first birthday. Everyday is a challenge, but I wouldn't change her for the world. She has made me the person I am today... Stronger, Wiser and the determination to do my best for her in life! All money raised will go to 'Footsteps' where they will help get the best out of Bella- Skye. The centre ranges from £1,500- £3,000 for short blocks of intense physiotherapy. The fundraising will be ongoing until I feel my wishes and BellaSkye's dreams have been met. My wish is for Bella- Skye to reach her full potential with all of our love and support. And I know Bella- Skye's dreams are to be able to sit up and run around and play with her cousins! We can all wish and dream but lets see if we can make some of them come true! Mel Stokes - Bella-Skye's mum .
