Can we really call it summer? I’m not sure with SUMMER letchley BUZZ some of the rain I have seen recently! Well whatever the weather, its not long now until the schools break for the summer holidays. Some of you I’m sure will be venturing to shores afar, whilst some will be busy organising local days out or things to do at home. We have pulled together some ideas of places to visit and activities to do over the summer months. Maybe its a day at the seaside, a visit to Chiki Ceramiki to paint your own pottery masterpiece or Afternoon tea served in your own home. I am looking forward to visiting the Biergarten to sample some real ales with locally produced snacks and going to the Family Fun day at Howe Park Cafe. Check out our exclusive Bletchley Buzz coupons on page 6 for House of Chicken bringing authentic portugese food and drink to Bletchley or Mastee our very own award winning Indian restaurant and bar offering a special Banquet Deal. 2016

news Walking With Giants Cancelled.

Festive Road has had to make the very tough decision to cancel this year’s Walking With Giants Parade (due to take place next month in Milton Keynes), mainly as a result of insufficient monies being received from grant applications. But all is not lost, as they will be exhibiting a collection of their extraordinary mechanical creations, including some wonderful new creatures, at the Barn Gallery, Westbury Arts Centre, as part of the 4th binennial MK Festival Fringe, which runs from 13 - 23 July 2016.

Bletchley Lions learn about Chernobyl

The Lions Club of Bletchley has spent time recently learning about the Chernobyl atomic disaster which happened 30 years ago but is still affecting people now. The information was supplied by the Chernobyl Relief Foundation in the UK (CRF), a voluntary organisation which raises awareness on Chernobyl issues and making the lives of the children affected brighter. Recently, more than 400 young people received respite holidays and treatment and thousands more received medication and it has been independently estimated that CRF delivers humanitarian aid for half a million people.

A Little Taste of Portugal

Pastéis de nata were created before the 18th century by Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery (Portuguese: Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém, in Lisbon. These monks were originally based in France and loved these pastries which could be found in local french bakeries. At the time, convents and monasteries used large quantities of egg-whites for starching of clothes, such as nuns' habits. It was quite common for monasteries and convents to use the leftover egg yolks to make cakes and pastries, resulting in the proliferation of sweet pastry recipes throughout the country. Following the extinction of the religious orders and in the face of the impending closing of many of the convents and monasteries in the aftermath of the Liberal Revolution of 1820, the monks started selling pastéis de nata at a nearby sugar refinery to secure some revenue. In 1834

the monastery was closed and the recipe was sold to the sugar refinery, whose owners in 1837 opened the Fábrica de Pastéis de Belém. The descendents own the business to this day. Since 1837, locals and visitors to Lisbon have visited the bakery to purchase fresh from the oven pastéis, sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar. Their popularity normally results in long lines at the take-away counters, in addition to waiting lines for sit-down service. Now, they can be purchased in many places all over the world, including House of Chicken!

GET SET FOR SUMMER your 3 page guide

All set for summer The school holidays are just around the corner, the shorts are out and hopefully the sun will put in an appearance or two. This can only mean it’s the summer! Whether you’ve got a getaway to foreign climes booked or not, we want to show you that there’s plenty going on closer to home, both in Milton Keynes and within an hour’s drive. Hopefully this feature will bring you one step closer to avoiding the dreaded school holiday refrain “I’m bored”. Take a look and why not share your summer fun tips with us on Twitter @bletchleybuzz Get active Nothing is as likely to turn

your little darlings into uncontrollable little monsters as too much energy. In Milton Keynes check out Bounce, the Indoor Trampoline Park opposite the Stadium where your kids can boing away to their hearts content from just £4.99 per child. And for teenagers Bounce Beatz is where it’s at on Friday nights. Or let them loose in Safari MK in Kiln Farm, while you enjoy a well deserved cup of coffee. Check out their website for details of events taking place during the summer. Stepping outside of Milton Keynes, there’s nothing like a tree-top adventure and you’ll find just that at Go Ape, situated within the grounds of Woburn Safari

Park (you don’t have to pay the Safari Park fee to go in, although Go Apers will get discounted entry). It’s not cheap (prices start from £25.00) but it’s fantastic fun for a special occasion or treat. Or get your swimming togs on and get sliding down those flumes at one of the nearby fun pools, such as Towcester Centre for Leisure, which offers family swim sessions with waves, flume rides and inflatables from £3.00 per child (members’ price). Try this at home

Why not set up your own sports day in the garden or local green space? Think egg and spoon and three legged races. You could even give the welly throw a try!

from £19.00, or just watch others take to the waves while you enjoy an ice cream. If, however, you want to experience the real thing you’re looking at a 60 mile drive to Southend. Try Leigh Bell Wharf, a small sandy stretch that’s perfect for families, and is on the western side of Southend. Try this at home

OK so it may not be the Caribbean and there may not be crystal clear water lapping at your ankles but nothing says British summertime better than a visit to the beach. We love MK but it’s about as landlocked as it gets. But never fear, once again The Centre:MK will be bringing the beach to you from 30th July to 4th September at Middleton Hall. Entry is free and you’ll find all the best bits of the seaside transported along with it, from candyfloss to carousels. And there is always the opportunity to be beside…water of some kind with the many lakes around Milton Keynes. Fans of wakeboarding can also get themselves down to WakeMK at Willen Lake and enjoy a session

Weather permitting you could create your own seaside in your back garden. Get on YouTube and find a track with lapping waves and the odd seagull, get out the paddling pool and sandpit, throw in a bucket and spade and hey presto – instant beach!

The great outdoors We’re so lucky living in Milton Keynes, we have so much green space to get out and enjoy – and best of all a walk along the canal or through the woods is

www.bletchleybuzz.co.uk

completely free. One of the most beautiful areas of woodland can be found at Howe Park, situated in Tattenhoe. Complete with a visitor’s centre where you can learn all about the wood itself and a café that does amazing cakes, you can easily make a morning of it. Pop down on 27th August and you can also enjoy a fun day taking place at the woods. For something a little more energetic, pay a visit to Experience the Country, close to Newton Longville. You can take part in a number of outdoor pursuits such as archery, 4x4 driving, riding segways and bushcraft. The centre hosts regular Children’s Days during the holidays for kids to have a go at some of the activities on offer. Step outside of MK and get back to nature spending a few hours strawberry picking at Grove Farm in Ivinghoe, close to Leighton Buzzard. And it’s not just strawberries you’ll find up for grabs, depending on when you visit there are 30 different kinds of fruit and veg ripe for the picking.

We often take for granted the creatures living in close proximity to us, so why not spend some time on an insect hunt? Encourage the kids to search for interesting species and then find out their names. Or even try a spot of birdwatching – binoculars at the ready!

Playtime Scream if you want to go faster! For big adventures take your little ones to Gulliver’s Land, handily located near Willen Lake, from £15.95 per person. Designed especially for children aged 2-13, you can be sure there will be lots of safe options to entertain. After an indoor alternative for when the weather’s not so great that is still creative and loads of fun? Dobbies garden centre holds LEGO

clubs during the summer holidays on Tuesdays and Thursday, beginning at 11am. Kids will have the chance to get building block happy for just 50p per child (including juice and a biscuit) during this one hour session. No need to book, just turn up. Fancy heading further afield for something more knee-trembling? You can get to Thorpe Park in just over an hour (traffic permitting) where you’ll find iconic rides such as Saw and Nemisis Inferno. Or if something more sedate is just the ticket, why not to step into Harry Potter’s world at the Warner Bros Studio Tour, just outside of Watford.

The International Festival is back and it’s offering something for everyone. From 15th-24th July the city will be transformed into a festival with a huge array of events, live music and performance. There’s plenty of free activities to get involved with to entertain family members of all ages, including a two kilometre-long domino run (one not to be missed!) which will run through the city on 16th July and a Family Focus event at Willen Lake over 23rd-24th July to welcome in the summer holidays. You don’t have to blow the budget to big up your adrenaline levels. There are some fantastic play parks in Milton Keynes, such as The Leys Park in Bletchley which has gym equipment alongside its three children’s play parks and Willen Lake’s adventure playground.

I popped into Chiki Ceramiki in Oxley Park on Wednesday afternoon with a friend. We had pre-booked and had been advised of a time to come when we would avoid a school

group, but you can drop in. As it happened we were the only two in there (well four if you count our two babies). We decided to make Fathers’ Day gifts, opting to put our babies’ hand prints onto mugs. There was a huge array of different products that you were able to decorate and it took me forever to settle on one! The assistant who helped us create our mug was lovely, very welcoming but also had a great knack for getting our

little ones to open their hands to capture the perfect hand print. After we’d finished our masterpieces we indulged in a coffee (they also sell gelato which looks amazing!) and a chat. The ceramics take around 10 days to kiln and be returned and I could not be happier with the finished product – what a great alternative gift. Visit www.chikiceramiki.co.uk for more information by Angie McAllister

Chiki Ceramiki is a family friendly 42 seat pottery studio. We are a paint your own pottery studio, open 7 days a week, for adults and children of all abilities to get creative. We have a wide selection of ceramics to choose from starting from just £5 (plus a £2.50 studio fee). We supply everything you need to create a wonderful masterpiece, just bring your imagination.

Parties!

Available for all ages, our hugely popular and great value party package at £18 per person includes a piece of ceramic to paint, studio fees, party food, helium balloons and a keepsake plate for the birthday boy or girl.

Whilst you paint...

We serve a delicious selection of drinks and snacks. For coffee lovers we serve threesixtyrainforest blend, for tea lovers we have a wide selection of fruit, herbal and breakfast teas. Poppy

Hi everyone, my name is Poppy and I’m looking for my forever home. I am a very sweet girl and I love being out and about and keeping myself busy. I have had to have extensive training due to my over the top mouthing behaviour, I am a lot better now but my new owners will need to carry on with my training so I don’t slip back in to my cheeky ways. I do like playing with other dogs, but I think I play a little over the top and I get told off by the other dogs. But training will help me become calmer around them and not be so excited when I see them. Sadly I have spent most of my life in kennels with nowhere to call my own home and I just can’t wait for that time when someone picks me! I will need training, I will need time but blimey I will give you so much love in return!! Have you got room in your heart to love me? Can you offer me my forever home? Poppy xxXxx

Strawberry Time

It’s July and that means the soft fruit season, starting, of course, with strawberries. Strawberries seem to be everyone’s favourite. So much so that supermarkets go to great lengths to keep them in stock all year round. That, to my mind, rather spoils things. Some things are meant to be seasonal and strawberries are one of those things. There is great excitement to be had when the first strawberries are ready to be picked.

When you buy a punnet of strawberries you spend a couple of pounds on 500g of large, perfectly shaped fruit that smell gorgeous but may or may not have a flavour to match. Apart from eating them straight from the punnet, perhaps the simplest way to serve these perfect specimens is with a sprinkling of sugar and/or cream. But when you grow your own, or visit a farm to pick your own, you are unlikely to get that many large, perfectly shaped fruit. Instead, you’ll find they’re a variety of different shapes and sizes. This may sound like a disadvantage in comparison to the supermarkets’ perfect

offerings but far from it. Having spent your money on your punnet of perfection, you feel almost obliged to eat them whole and unadulterated. But when faced with a crop of tasty but odd looking berries you won’t think twice about popping them in a blender and making a whole range of delicious strawberry desserts, with strawberry and marshmallow ice-cream being a firm favourite in our house.

to melt them. Stir the mixture, add the cream and whisk so that it thickens slightly. Combine with the strawberry puree, mixing until the mixture is evenly pink. Add the remaining marshmallows, pour into suitable containers and place in the freezer for 3 hours. Remove from the freezer and beat the ice cream to introduce air, to break any ice crystals and to distribute the marshmallows throughout the ice cream then return to the freezer. You can, of course, make strawberry lollies using this mixture too. Don’t bother adding the second half of the marshmallows, but instead pour the liquid into lolly moulds instead of an ice-cream container.

Parents as Memory Makers

One summer holiday when my son was perhaps 5 or 6 years old, it struck me that every day of his young life he was creating memories. These memories would shape his life and how he would deal with his adult experiences; but not only that, every moment would shape what he remembered about our time together and who I was as a parent. I began to think of how I acted towards him and what I arranged for him as a way of making memories. Instead of being just a parent, I became a memory maker. With this in mind my attitude in moments of frustration changed. Whether it was being stuck in an airport or my son moaning about being bored, I looked upon it as an opportunity to develop our relationship and his ability to cope with what life would no doubt throw at him as an adult. Of course there were also times when we just had fun for fun’s sake, it would have been a little too intense otherwise. The summer holidays is a perfect time for creating

memories, and it is often what we inadvertently set out to do when planning where we go and what we do as a family. However, it isn’t just the big moments that create the memories, but the small ones too. Putting aside the world of social media, mobile phones and iPads, and taking the time to enjoy drawing, baking cookies, splashing in the paddling pool, or mending that broken toy with your children will bring you all closer, creating a little happiness as well as a lasting memory. It doesn’t take long, perhaps half an hour at a time, and yet the closeness you share in these moments will have a longer-lasting positive effect than treating your children to anything money can buy. Have a lovely summer. Karin Blak Relationship Therapist www.karinblak.co.uk
