Shout out to Marvin Gaye Love you then they hate you Then they love you again Hate you then they love you Then they hate you again Hold me tight, let me go Heal my heart, hurt my soul Build me up, break me down Make me smile, make me frown Give me love, take it all away again Give me love, take it all away again Yeah, ain't no love in the heart of city, that's what they told me Beef with over a hundred niggas, don't none of 'em know me Son of a mother studying at UDC Sitting in taxi cabs, where daddy roaming the streets Seven hallelujahs, my sutana was clean On everything I wear it, all the America's tees This whole system most prolific in the DMV Listen when you get the keys, it's seldom, you don't get the beef LOVE HATE THING WALE

As we continue to navigate the uncharted waters of 2023 and life post COVID-19, we have an obligation to fight for the best of humanity to prevail. The past year has been marked by unprecedented challenges, testing the resilience of nations and the fabric of our global society. In the midst of political upheaval, it is crucial that we, as informed citizens, engage in thoughtful discourse, seek understanding, and advocate for the principles that unite rather than divide us. This is a call to reflection, to unity, and to the unwavering pursuit of a better tomorrow amidst the stormy seas of the present. But, we must also be present in the moment. Seeing the glass half-full is always better than half empty. As a responsible media publisher, BleuLife Media Group chooses to create content that is holistic and inclusive. We truly believe the way to overcome adversity is through inclusivity. Challenge hate with love. Overcome prejudice with truth. Although the year is not over, It is the last quarter. We still have time to make it the best year yet. Before the need to start listing resolutions for the next year, let’s fine tune what we already have going on. There is nop better time than the present. Mahatma Gandhi once said, "You may never know what results come of your actions, but if you do nothing, there will be no results." This quote underscores the importance of taking initiative and making the most of the time we have. Gandhi encourages individuals to engage in meaningful actions, understanding that even in the face of uncertainty, positive outcomes can emerge.

INDIE WORLD: The Creative Discovery Platform A NEW PLATFORM FOR INDIE CREATORS TO ESCAPE THE MONOCULTURE

By Eric Munson Indie World is a new platform co-founded by Kabir Chibber to unite creatives of all mediums across the globe. It’s a place to discover creators that would otherwise never be found. Chibber describes Indie World as a sort of “Google for the creator economy.” “The most interesting stuff in the world today is being made, by people working together, but it’s impossible for most people to find.” Chibber said. “Indie World wants to make it easier to find the interesting and weird subcultures that exist on the internet by bringing them all together.” Born in Hong Kong, Chibber is something of a polymath, a person with a wide range of knowledge and learning. He has spent nearly a decade as an independent filmmaker creating numerous films of his own such as his most recent picture, ‘Only One Can Win’, a 72-minute feature documentary about a young boxer. He was also a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 2019, which is one of the most prestigious fellowships within the media industry.

He has also written numerous articles for noted publications such as ‘The Right to Insult the President of France (Harper’s Magazine), ‘When the European Union Rules Against Contemporary Art & Artists’ (Harper’s Magazine), ‘The Business of Professional Wrestling’ (The New Yorker), ‘The Last Games Arcade in Chinatown’ (The New York Times) and ‘The Mafia Homes of Sicily’ (Financial Times). Chibber created Indie World during the coronavirus pandemic, while working on his newest documentary film and making small batches of chore coats. Indie World provides users with access to videos, music, podcasts and newsletters; all in one convenient place. “We’re the anti-Instagram!” Chibber said. “We’re starting with digital and then we will move to small offline businesses, like indie fashion brands to help establish them also. As long as it’s indie, we’re here for you.”

The App Store summarizes the innovative platform’s concept as the following: “We help you discover independent creators you would never find on your own. Scroll through a handpicked selection of the most interesting people in the arts - film, fashion, writing, painting, comedy, bullshitting podcasters.” “One app to find and follow all your favorites across the main creator platforms like YouTube, TikTok and Spotify. Escape the monoculture!” Indie World is free and available on the App Store for iPhone (iOS 12 or later), iPod Touch (iOS 12 or later) and MacBook (macOS 11 or later with M1 chip or later). The app is rated 17+ for mature and suggestive themes. It was officially released on October 3, 2023. Issue 91

IT’S REAL TALK WITH MILES JOHNSON

SPORTS JOURNALIST

ON THE RISE " A WISE PERSON ONCE TOLD ME ‘YOUR SUCCESS IS DETERMINED BY HOW MANY PEOPLE YOU ARE ABLE TO BRING UP " By: Truth Hawkins

M

iles Johnson isn’t your average sports enthusiast; he’s a passionate advocate for the indomitable human spirit and a living testament to the power of resilience. With a relentless drive to overcome obstacles, matched with an unwavering commitment to his dreams; the Morehouse alumnus has become a beacon of inspiration in the world of sports media as well as for those struggling with common speech disorders and impediments. A media personality on the rise, Miles Johnson’s unique blend of passion, perseverance, and advocacy is changing the game, both on and off the court. Recently, Bleu caught up with Johnson where he shared how a childhood passion transformed into a promising career path, and how he is paving the way for the next generation. “My love for sports media started in my sophomore year of high school. I would listen to different sports commentators on ESPN and Fox Sports; and would always think to myself, it would be easy to talk about sports on TV, just like in the barbershop - and that initially drew my interest,” said Johnson explaining why sports has always played a part in his life as a former soccer player. However, it wasn’t until Lebron James took the NBA by storm that Johnson had a lightbulb moment. “During my sophomore year, I started to watch basketball more as a big LeBron fan,” said Johnson. “I would get into debates with friends about Jordan vs. LeBron. So then I thought I want to be like Stephen A. Smith or the next big time sports analyst. That was my goal, but the fact that I had a stutter was always in the back of my mind.” Fast forward to the summer ahead of his junior year in high school, and Miles’ speech impediment which had become increasingly worse, but he would tackle it head on by attending a “stuttering camp” which he says changed his life for the better. “I didn’t want to go initially, cause I just wanted to play video games. I ended up still going, and it was eye opening to see kids, all ages with stutters just like me, and they keep persevering every day,” he added explaining the experience was a “turning point” in how he viewed the hand in which he was dealt. After soaking up the knowledge of three speakers: a chef, a lawyer, and a real estate mogul – all of which had a “profound speech impediment” – Johnson revealed he walked away with the tools needed to rule the world. “The real estate mogul, who’s the most successful out of the three, had the most profound speech impediment,” shared Johnson. “He told me that, ‘Stuttering can be an anchor that holds you back or a springboard that propels you forward. It’s up to you to choose which lane to pass through.’ After that, Johnson shared he could no longer feel sorry for himself. “Let me see how I can take what God gave me, and apply it to my everyday life.” There was no turning back for Johnson who seemed to quickly find his stride, snagging interviews with a variety of athletes such as Chris Paul, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Tre Young. “I got invited to NBA All-Star Weekend in Cleveland 2022. That was a full circle moment for me because I was born in Cleveland, then I moved to New York and then to Philadelphia,” Miles shared excitedly, reflecting on his big break in the sports industry.

“I told him [Chris Paul] ‘I’m Miles Johnson, journalism student at Morehouse College,’ and I stuttered really bad. This was in front of established ESPN journalists like Brian Winhorst and Dave McMenamin, all these guys that I would look up to on TV. And Chris Paul looked at me like nothing happened. He answered my question, and then shouted out Morehouse and Maroon Tiger - the school newspaper.” For Johnson, this was another turning point in his journey. “If somebody like Chris Paul can look at me and not think any differently - he just answers my question - it confirms to me that I CAN effectively communicate.” In the months following, he would snag an invite to be a host on NBA League Pass – two years in a row as well as a guest sideline reporter for TNT. As a way of paying it forward, Johnson, who is the founder and host of the Real Talk With MJ podcast shared he’d like to open doors for those looking to follow in his footsteps. “A wise person once told me that your success is determined by how many people you are able to bring up. And so, having opportunities to put some of my Morehouse brothers on, like NBA Elite Pass, is the goal.” In the interim, Johnson, who currently attends NYU, plans to maximize his new zipcode by offering sports coverage across New York, Philadelphia, and many more states on the East Coast. Prior to hopping off the call, Johnson indulged Bleu with a game of GOAT, answering popular pop culture questions, spanning hip-hop,

music, and film. Circling back to the age old GOAT debate: Michael Jordan or Lebron James? “LeBron James all day. You cannot tell me anything about LeBron especially because I was born in Cleveland. I didn’t really like LeBron that much when he was in Miami, but in 2015, I remember in 2014 [summertime] he came back to Cleveland. He stole my heart there. I feel like he was the best 18 year old, and now he’s 38 going on 39 and he’s dropping 35, 12 and 9 against Kawhi Leonard and Paul George; all these guys that came in the league years before him or years after him. I know people talk about the rings. But they don’t talk about that with Bill Russell. He got 11 and Jordan got 6. So I feel like, LeBron doesn’t have to have 6 rings to be the GOAT.” Who in your opinion is the greatest of all time athlete turned actor? “That’s a good one. I’d have to say The Rock [Dwayne Johnson]. Like he’s the staple. I feel like if you’re more known for your acting than what you did in sports, like you won. So by far it’s him!” How about the GOAT sports movie? “I’m gonna show love to my fellow Morehouse brother, Samuel L. Jackson and say Coach Carter. “ Name the GOAT athlete turned rapper? “Shout out to Shaquille O’Neal. I know he has some words about Damian Lillard on his tracks. So yeah, I’ll say Shaq. He got some bars. He got some bars.” Issue 91

DAZZLING DUBROVNIK AND BEYOND

How to Explore CROATIA’S Southern Dalmatian Coast By Becca Blond

T

he sun is setting over the medieval walled city of Old Town Dubrovnik turning it golden, and I can’t tear my eyes away from the kaleidoscope of color spreading across the slowly darkening sky. This fairytale city on Croatia’s southern Dalmatian Coast has become one of Europe’s hottest destinations in the last decade, and now that I’m here I can see why. Besides its fortified Old Town, filled with polished stone streets and gleaming buildings, Dubrovnik also has a gorgeous locale on the Adriatic Sea. Here you’ll find beautiful turquoise and aquamarine-hued water that is warm enough to swim in. There is also much to do in this region beyond the small city. Here is how I recommend exploring this stunning part of the Dalmatian Coast. Renting a car here is affordable and easy, parking in Dubrovnik itself is difficult; but for exploring outside of the city, a car is your best bet. 42

" THIS FAIRYTALE CITY ON CROATIA’S SOUTHERN DALMATIAN COAST HAS BECOME ONE OF EUROPE’S HOTTEST DESTINATIONS IN THE LAST DECADE, AND NOW THAT I’M HERE I CAN SEE WHY "

OLD TOWN DUBROVNIK

You only need half a day to explore the pedestrian Old Town. It is a small place that is easy to walk around. Encircled by the city's old walls, which date back to the 16th century, this part of Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If the well-preserved medieval architecture looks familiar, and you are a fan of the popular mythical drama, Game of Thrones; Old Town served as one of the set locations for Kings Landing. Many companies offer set-jetting tours to top locations where the show was filmed including the Spanish Steps, the old city walls, and Fort Lovrijenac. The main street is lined with shops, restaurants, churches, and palaces in polished stone, baroque buildings. Alleys wind off the main street to many bars, dining spots, and boutiques. Walking the city walls is a top activity. You’ll need to grab a ticket to do so (around $26), which can be purchased online.

ADRIATIC BEACHES

Just outside the city walls is Banje Beach. In summer, it is a popular swimming and sunbathing spot with fabulous Old Town views. It is also a great place to watch Dubrovnik’s superlative sunsets. Note, that like many Dalmatian Coast beaches, Banje is a pebble, not sand, beach. The pebbles are not very comfortable to walk on, but once you are in the clear blue sea, you’ll forget the momentary pain. Lokrum Island, which is just a short boat ride from Dubrovnik, is another popular beach destination. Surrounded by lush green woods, it is a tranquil spot with lots of hidden coves and rocky shores from which you can access the sea.

SALT AND OYSTERS IN STON

Located about an hour outside of Dubrovnik, Ston is worth a visit. It also has ancient walls, running for more than 5 kilometers that have

been referred to as the “European Wall of China.” The walls, which can be walked, were built in the 14th and 15th centuries. Although climbing up to the walls of the city is a trek, the views from them are well worth the effort. While streets lined with polished stone houses are typical in this region, this small town is most famous for its salt pans and oysters. Salt has played an integral role in Ston’s economy for centuries now. It is harvested from a series of shallow pools through an intricate process involving evaporating seawater. If you are interested in learning more, guided tours about the traditional harvesting methods are offered. You can also purchase the famed product at shops around the town. My favorite part of my Ston visit was sampling its other most famous product, the oysters. Considered among the world’s best, they were truly delicious with an intense umami flavor. You’ll find fresh oysters at most of the local restaurants. Issue 91

WHERE TO STAY

My two favorite Dubrovnik hotels are the Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik and the Hotel Bellevue. If you are spending more than a few days in the city.

CHARMING CAVTAT

Another easy day trip from Dubrovnik, Cavtat is about a 30-minute drive down the coastline. If you arrive in Dubrovnik by plane, the airport is located by Cavtat. Less expensive than Dubrovnik, Cavtat has some great restaurants and the relaxed vibe of a timeless seaside town. Like other towns, its charming Old Town dates back to medieval times and has cobblestone streets, beautiful squares, and hundreds of year-old stone houses. The picturesque waterfront is lined with al fresco restaurants serving up everything from fresh seafood, Croatian fare (try the black risotto!), and pizza. Spend some time relaxing over drinks and a meal here and feel the stress melt away. 44

MAGAZINE

HOTEL EXCELSIOR DUBROVNIK Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik is just a 5-minute walk from Old Town and even less to Banje Beach. It also boasts amazing sunsets over the medieval. The boutique property dates back to 1913 and has hosted everyone from American celebrities to European royalty over the years. The hotel sits on a hillside and has nine floors, with reception on the top floor and

beach access on the ground floor. The interior style is refined and elegant. Many of the 158 rooms and suites have fantastic views of the Adriatic, Lokrum Island, and the Old Town from furnished balconies. There are three restaurants onside. Sensus is the fine dining restaurant, and its menu features unconventional and creative takes on fresh local delicacies. Opt for the tasting

menu if you want to sample the chef ’s favorite creations paired with local wines. Hotel Excelsior does not have a beach, but it has sun-loungers for guests on the promenade by the sea and direct access to the clear waters from ladders. It also features a delightful spa with personalized massages, a large indoor swimming pool, a sauna, and steam room.

HOTEL BELLEVUE DUBROVNIK If you want direct beach access, Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik is the place to book. Built into the side of a cliff with floor-to-ceiling windows in guest rooms and public spaces, it is one of the top hotels in the city. Also, a boutique property, it isn’t quite as close to Old Town as Hotel Excelsior, but still offers easy access. It lacks beautiful sunsets due to its location, but does offer panoramic Dalmatian coast views. Its best asset is its location on Bellevue Beach. Guests have elevator access to the pebble beach and calm water set between cliffs, perfect for swimming. You can even swim into the wide mouth of a cave set in the cliffs to the left side of the beach. While the beach itself is public, the hotel has a section with sun loungers reserved just for guests, so you

will have comfy seating. Rooms and suites have a modern ambiance, and the hotel underwent a redo in the spring of 2019, so everything feels very clean and new. Other perks include a lavish buffet and madeto-order breakfast included in your rate. The Michelin Guide recommended house restaurant Vapor, serves playful takes on regional dishes with excellent results. The luxury hotel also has a nice spa with a small, heated, indoor free-form pool and hot tub set behind floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea. Cushioned loungers surround the pool, and the air is heated a few degrees warmer than the pool, so you feel as if you are in a tropical locale. There is also a fitness center, Finnish sauna, and steam room.

OCEAN CLUB RESORTS THIS HIDDEN GEM BEACHFRONT RESORT IN TURKS AND CAICOS SCORES ON LOCATION, VIEWS AND SERVICE By Anna Kim A quick 3 hour and 50 minute nonstop flight from New York City to Providenciales International Airport (PLS), in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) brought me to a tropical haven with palm-fringed shores where luxurious yachts anchor by a shimmering blue canvas. Stepping onto Ocean Club Resorts’ pristine grounds in Turks & Caicos felt like entering another world, where I'd left my everyday routines and mundane worries far behind. There are 40 main islands and cays in Turks and Caicos Islands, of which only nine are inhabited. (Providenciales, Grand Turk, North Caicos, South Caicos, Middle Caicos, Salt Cay, Pine Cay, Parrot Cay, and Ambergris Cay.) This archipelago consists of two island groups: the Turks Islands and the Caicos Islands. It’s believed that the Turks are named after a species of Indigenous cactus, a Turk’s 46

head cactus, resembling a fez; while Caicos means 'string of islands' in the Indigenous Lucayan language. Known for the third largest barrier reef in the world and crystal clear waters, Providenciales, locally called ‘Provo’, is the country’s third largest island and is located on the northwestern part of Caicos islands. Its crown jewel, the 12-mile long Grace Bay Beach is part of the Princess Alexandra National Park and connects to Leeward Beach in the east and Bight Beach in the west. The entire stretch of shoreline encompasses the area from Blue Hills to Northwest Point, and the Northwest Point National Park. The luxurious, yet affordable Ocean Club Resorts are located where the powdery soft white sand beaches lead down to turquoise crystal clear waters. While TCI is not known for being the most budget-friendly, it does offer more cost-

effective options compared to its competitors. It is home to some of the best reef snorkeling in the world. It's no wonder that Grace Bay Beach consistently earns accolades as the world's top beach. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Ocean Club Resorts comprises two deluxe beachfront properties – Ocean Club West and Ocean Club (East,) the sister property– conveniently located just one mile apart on Grace Bay Beach. This 4 star resort has everything from sunbathing to thrilling activities like kiteboarding and parasailing; Ocean Club Resorts offers it all. Both offer spacious suites (with many having been recently renovated and some currently being updated). Ocean Club (East) and Ocean Club West give you easy access to shops, dining, and complimentary non-motorized water sports such as kayaking and stand-up

paddleboarding. I found that Ocean Club East, on the eastern end of Grace Bay, offered a quieter, secluded atmosphere, ideal for honeymooners and solo travelers. I stayed at the Ocean Club West which stands next to big chain hotels and is one of the best locations on the Grace Bay Beach stretch. Between the large pools (a total of three freshwater pools including built-in poolside barbeques), an on-site fitness center equipped with Cybex treadmills and elliptical machines, three tennis courts (including pickleball), on-site spa services at Spa Tropique offering 'Sea & C' brightening facials and 'Knotty But Nice' Swedish massages, three restaurants (Cabana Bar & Grill, Solana & Opus Wine Bar & Grill) and free Wi-Fi throughout; there were many ways to keep busy during my four days there. And, let's not forget about the off-site excursions that the concierge can arrange for you. I highly recommend the horseback riding adventure through the crystal-clear waters.

Picture waking up to idyllic unobstructed beach views right from your bedroom, drifting off to sleep to the soothing sounds of the waves, and walking to the water, only a few steps away from your suite. When I wanted to travel between the Ocean Club (East) and Ocean Club West, I took advantage of the convenience offered by the resort’s free shuttle service, thanks to their ‘Stay at One, Play at Both’ policy, making it seem like a two-in-one vacation experience. The local grocery store, Graceway Gourmet, is a short 10-minute walk, and the resort offers the option to borrow a buggy to carry your groceries. Alternatively, I could easily walk to nearby shops and restaurants like the Regent Village Shops, Salt Mill Shops, and the Ocean Club West Plaza.

The resort’s direct beach access with its coral-origin sands and mesmerizing turquoise waters was a place of tranquility, relaxation, adventure, and one of the main reasons why I’d booked a stay. On your own beach day, just look for the cute signature pink umbrellas, and Beach access comes with comfortable lounge chairs and complimentary towels. Issue 91

SPACIOUS ROOMS WITH A VIEW At Ocean Club West, each beachfront condo-style property is privately owned, which means that the interior decor varies to suit each owner's tastes. However, the overall interior is Caribbean-style characterized by bright pastel furnishings, light fixtures that replicate dangling squid tentacles, seashell displays, open-air designs, and natural materials like bamboo and rattan; that create a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. The decor mirrors the warmth of the island and made me feel like I was staying in a cozy yet luxurious home. I stayed in a 1600 sq ft, 2 bedroom, 3 bathroom suite that can accommodate up to 8 people. My suite served as a plush home base that came equipped with modern conveniences including a full kitchen with an oven, a fridge, and the ultimate long vacation essential: a washing machine and dryer. The bathroom was pretty with pastel wallpaper, and framed photographs on the wall showcasing the boundless ocean vistas. Here, practicality and luxury are combined with two showers in two separate bathrooms and a double vanity sink offers convenience and style in the third. Strategically placed ceiling fans provide a continual, soft breeze that makes the room feel cool and refreshing while fending off the Caribbean heat. Starfish and coral-shaped bedside lights give a soft, marine glow as a whimsical reference to the sea's wonders. This room harmoniously blends the Caribbean aesthetic with functionality; promising a retreat of both comfort and coastal charm. The rooms are currently under renovation, and set to become even more appealing when the work is completed. While there's no elevator, the staff will gladly help carry your luggage to your room. Whether you're a couple, a family, or a large group, Ocean Club West offers 68 suites of varying sizes to meet your needs. 48

WHAT TO EAT The beachfront Cabana Bar and Grill on the east property offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, specializing in grilled and fried dishes. Solana, located on the west property, boasts ocean-facing dining perfect for sunset views and serves Asian-inspired cuisine -the dragon sushi roll was my favorite. No visit to Turks and Caicos is complete without indulging in conch. If you're open to it, The chewy, flavorful meat from conch shells is a must-try! Conch is represented on the Turks and Caicos flag as well which displays a queen conch shell, the spiny lobster, and the Turks head cacti. Choose from a wide array of conch dishes, including cracked conch, conch ceviche, and conch fritters from the menu. For a more upscale seafood experience, Opus Restaurant, on the east side is the go-to spot. I was there during lobster season, so I fully took advantage and ate everything from lobster ravioli to grilled lobster and lobster benedict. Don't miss the island's other must try dishes like boiled fish and grits, Johnny cake, lionfish, locally caught snapper and grouper from Grace Bay.

SUSTAINABLE INITIATIVES

As if there weren’t enough pros already, I was curious about the sustainability initiatives at Ocean Club Resorts. Not only were these sister resorts the first resorts in all 40 islands of Turks & Caicos to receive the Green Globe Certification, but they recently started a partnership with Wayaj; a leader in eco-friendly hospitality, to reduce their environmental impact. As part of this initiative, Ocean Club Resort guests can measure their trip's carbon footprint, using the Carbon Footprint Calculator available on their website and offset it with beach clean-ups and marine life protection. Staying in a resort that cares about the planet just as much as it cares for its guests is certainly a plus. The hotel also actively supports local nonprofits and invites guests to get involved, such as Pack for Purpose, which donates school supplies to nearby schools, and Potcake Place, which takes care of rescued dogs.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE A vacation can be transformed from enjoyable to genuinely extraordinary by outstanding hotel staff. As soon as I arrived, Keisha Gilbert, the Manager of Guest Relations, went above and beyond to make me feel welcome. She set the tone for my entire trip when she gave me a warm hug instead of the standard handshake that I am often greeted with. This friendly gesture reflected the genuine Turks and Caicos warmth of the people and hospitality of the Ocean Club Resort staff. During one of my solo lunch outings, I could not help but overhear a family's conversation at the next table praising the service they'd received during their stay. It was a testament to the staff 's dedication and their ability to create an environment where every guest feels valued and appreciated. From the moment I interacted with the reception staff to my final moments at the resort, I was consistently impressed by their sincere warm hospitality and attention to detail which created an atmosphere that truly felt like a home away from home. Whether it was the front desk, housekeeping, or wait staff, the team ensured I felt at home and well-cared for. They also provide a 24 hour security guard on-site, which offers peace of mind for guests arriving late at night. You really felt taken care of, especially as a solo female traveler like me.

WHERE TO GO FOR NIGHTLIFE For those looking for a night on the town, the restaurants and bars in and near Grace Bay Beach are just a 15 minute walk away. These include the Shisha Lounge, located in the Regent Village shopping plaza in Providenciales, a lively hookah bar and lounge along the Grace Bay strip. Locals tend to head out around 10pm after a stop at other venues such as Blu Bar & Lounge to predrink, where a live DJ also spins. Aziza, a Moroccan-inspired restaurant just across from Casablanca Casino, features nightly DJ entertainment and has become a hotspot for locals, tourists, and even celebrities, including Canadian rapper, Drake. The neighborhood feels both lively and safe at all times – I even felt safe walking back to the resort after dark, but I recommend you take a taxi (there are no Ubers in TCI) as it can get pitch black, and may be hard to navigate if you’re planning to walk.

HERE ARE SOME PLACES TO VISIT IN THE AREA IF YOU’RE STAYING AT OCEAN CLUB WEST: • Visit Noah’s Ark Beach Club on Sundays where locals like to hang out. This floating bar is located off of Half Moon Bay Lagoon in the Atlantic Ocean and is open from 10am till sunset. To get there hop on the daily ferry service for a 10-minute boat ride from the Blue Haven Marina. The cost is $30 for a roundtrip. Or if you have the luxury, you can charter your own yacht or jet ski instead. • Go to the iconic Da Conch Shack Restaurant, located beachfront at Blue Hills Beach renowned for its seafood, particularly the freshest conch on the island, it's one of the top restaurants to try this delicacy. Head there on Wednesdays, a light show and live music begins at 8pm. with the 'We Funk Junkanoo Band,' from 5pm. till 12am. • The Island Fish Fry, held every Thursday from 5:30pm to 9:30pm at PTV Stubbs Diamond Plaza, is a quintessential Turks & Caicos experience. Expect incredible food, artisan crafts, and live cultural performances to celebrate “all things Turks and Caicos” at this weekly event. • At the nearby Grace Bay Club, the newly opened Infiniti Restaurant & Raw Bar, is an upscale signature restaurant with some of the freshest seafood around. ow daunting it must be to sing about a perfect God, as an imperfect vessel, to an imperfect world. That was the thought that won in my mind when I prepared to interview Grammy award-winning artist, Dante Bowe. He was in London to attend the star-studded Vogue World extravaganza as a guest. Bowe, 30 (not much older than me), - who usually rocks an evercrisp fade, a Colgate white smile, an optimistic demeanor or “vibe”, a new era cap and a fit that features all the best that this season’s fashion has to offer; is clearly still young. He still has a whole life to live, with mistakes to be made… he must feel the pressure, right? Sure he did, being under the lens & scope of the over 2000-yearold conservative church community, and successfully following behind veteran heavyweight stars that also started in the church. From Aretha Franklin, Usher, to the Clark Sisters & Whitney Houston…(for perspective Bowe is only one year older than say Bad Bunny or Lil Baby…) Since 2018, Dante has played a pivotal role in encouraging a new generation who desire real & relevant gospel music. Without a doubt, you've seen him in your Youtube algorithm racking up millions of views. Especially in the recent past, as one of the frontmen of the dynamic and diverse group, Maverick City. This young set of singers & songwriters - which included Bowe - changed the game by composing contemporary christian songs that resonated with the youth (and even their parents, mine included!). With their clear fire for the word of God, they essentially “translated” the words and promises of Jesus in a relatable way, to millions of people worldwide through music. Their sound doesn’t discriminate or exclude, as it appeals to those who need an encouraging word in college, those looking for a boost in the morning or just some necessary end of the day music to wind down to. Dante was a pillar in that collective. Anthems like “Wait on You” from Maverick City, and solo works such as “Joyful” and “Voice of God” showcased Dante’s distinctive, raspy, melodic voice and a penmanship that helped him bag more than a couple billboard hits, platinum record plaques and Grammy recognitions for himself and some of his peers like Tasha Cobbs Leonard.

This fast-track wave is something we hadn’t really seen since Kirk Franklin’s “Revolution” or Mary Mary’s “Shackles” - key gospel anthems of the early 2000’s, that even reached the hottest clubs. Bowe & Maverick City made worship pop off again… their current and real music could easily fit in your playlist under one of Future’s bangers. Then Bowe decided to part ways with the group last year… amicably. As quickly as Dante moved mountains and made waves with his sound, he again shook the gospel genre with this bold move. Selfproclaimed critics entered the court of public opinion and dissected his breakaway from the group. They passed judgment on his every move following the news, banking on the little info & speculation that was online. In spite of all this, what struck most were the words of encouragement, prayers and love from loyal supporters under all of Bowe’s social posts. Many of the commenters sympathizing with his tough yet relatable upbringing - that included homelessness & abuse - with admiration for his incredible talent. Clearly, people really want the best for Dante, wherever God is leading him. With his hopeful perspective and trust in God’s plan, Dante Bowe has taken all the noise in his stride and made his own beat, releasing a self-titled album honoring God and all the things that make up his personal artistry and character. The album is somewhat a hybrid of gospel, R&B and life issues that follow after Sunday service, so to speak. Like love: the island-amapiano inspired “Wind Me Up” is one example. Or take his new, raw and honest release, “Fire”. The single features a simple ticking rhythm - sort of embodying the pace & routine of life itself. As Grammy season dawns again, it’s safe to say Dante deserves to be in the running following the big bet he’s taken on himself (and God). His solo journey is a clear testament of all the blessings, uncomfortability & growing pains that come with change. Or in his words “evolving”. It’s almost like an ongoing race navigating through life and following God, like Paul references in the Bible. It seems Dante gets that, and that his faith-based journey is not yet over… So, could it all be daunting for Dante? Probably. But let’s read on and see how Dante Bowe explains the overwhelming beauty and hope of the journey that keeps him running…

Dante! We last linked up with you for the photoshoot in London, how was the experience for you out there? Was London good to you? I love London! We had an amazing time. London fashion week was truly special. I got to go to BBC Radio - I've always wanted to visit! My incredible team and TRUE Music label family hosted an album party at Isabel in Mayfair too. Michael Philouze, the men’s editor of VOGUE Magazine styled me, it was incredible! It was great. Where to next? I went on vacation right after to Costa Rica! But before that I went to see the Beyoncé concert in Dallas. That was an amazing time. We celebrated one of my best friend’s Sabrina's birthday at the concert as well. After the celebrations, I was able to get some muchneeded rest & relaxation in Costa Rica. I surfed and recharged. We had a good time. I’m rehearsing and preparing for my next performance at Taste of Soul on October 21 in Los Angeles. I've got two philanthropic projects I’ve been working on, which I’m excited for. Both will be unveiled in November. One is with Girls Scouts who of course build girls’ courage, confidence, character and empower them to make the world a better place. The other is with Big Brothers Big Sisters, which facilitates and nurtures positive mentoring relationships for the youth to help them reach their highest potential. This is a huge honor for me. Working with these kids has really inspired me. I’m passionate about giving back and using my platform for good. I love to mentor the youth, encourage the next generation, and empower them to be all they are destined to be. To help them reach their greatest potential, and support their journey. I hope to help bring some dreams to life. You were in London primarily for Vogue World, how was that?! An incredible celebration! It definitely creates a global spotlight on London’s world-leading culture and creativity. London’s considered the cultural capital of the world to many. It inspires me and never fails to bring people together through theater, music, dance, opera, art and fashion. So much diversity. It’s cool that the proceeds will go to London-based performing arts organizations. I had an amazing time there. I got to see some people I've never seen before, like Jared Leto! Anna Wintour walked the carpet as I was walking the carpet! I enjoyed the entire experience. The show was incredible. I love my Vogue family. They know that.

" IT MAKES ME FEEL INCREDIBLE THAT MY FAN BASE, MY FRIENDS, AND MY FAMILY ARE SUPPORTIVE. THEY’VE SEEN THE FRUIT OF MY LIFE, THEY TRUST ME, THEY KNOW THAT WHAT I PUT MY MIND TO I WILL ACCOMPLISH. "

Is fashion something that is important to you as an artist? Fashion and culture go hand in hand. I appreciate the arts and I’m inspired by all facets of creative expression. I love fashion and the people it brings together. The more I am immersed in this community, the more I appreciate the many gifts represented in this space. There's so much that goes on behind the scenes that many may never see or experience. I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the best stylists, and meet so many of my favorite designers. I love seeing designers’ journeys’ and their stories showcased in fashion shows and campaigns. Some only see the glitz and glamor of the fashion world… a lot of people think fashion is self-glorifying and vain for the most part. But I think when you get to a certain level, ultimately it's about the art and the ability to incorporate another outlet of self-expression. Fashion has become an extension of my creative process; a way to say things about myself in the most creative ways I choose. It allows me to be unique and at the same time, connect with others who understand this exciting world. Some may prefer to collect art work, sculptures, photography, paintings… people who prefer fashion generally love how they’re able to find creative expression through clothes and all that goes into it. I feel like I'm at the level where I appreciate the art and the artist. I appreciate the people who create beautiful designs by hand especially when it comes to couture, one of a kind pieces. Like, only a few people in the world have those particular pieces of clothing. They’re rare, unique, and make special events that much more memorable. The best part of fashion is the people. I enjoy praying with people in these spaces. I talk about my life, my faith, my testimony with people that normally wouldn't talk about God. I feel very comfortable sharing what God has done in my life, and how he has brought me to this season. This is 54

a natural part of my conversations, because I'm just so grateful! I love sharing his light and hope with everyone I meet along the way. Somehow, someway God keeps positioning me in rooms I never imagined I’d be in. With people I never imagined I'd have the opportunity to meet. And well, God is working, and using all this for purposes far greater than I can fathom. Many of the people I meet listen to my music, a lot of them do, and I think that just being a witness is just living your life out loud you know, and I live my life for Jesus, so everywhere I go people know what's up. Fashion is something I've always ventured into and yes, I want to do it more. So should we expect some fashion collabs? In fact, in all things Dante Bowe, what can we look forward to? I have a few magazine covers scheduled for release this fall. I've been working with some of the best in the business for these covers and I’m excited to see their vision come to life. I enjoy being immersed in the fashion community and learning the art of fashion. I would say as an introduction to the new me. I've always loved R&B, I've always loved Pop, I've always loved Gospel and Christian Music. When you listen to the entire album, I want you to see it’s like a gumbo of all these sounds and a new introduction to me. I named it Dante Bowe because I felt like that title represented the entire project in a great way. It's just a personal project, it is all about my relationship with God, my relationship with people, and my growth. So I hope that people can discern that, when they listen to the album. I believe this album will inspire people to dance, celebrate and be all that God has called them to be. It's filled with hope and joy. My recent album and the one I have coming soon, represents my creative evolution and a bold step towards pushing boundaries. I’m

FA S H I O N

trying to craft a sonic journey through my music that bridges the gap between different musical worlds. I guess the thought process (behind the album) was to reach everyone around the world, and share the gospel. We need more healthy people talking about love and relationships, we need more people who have an authentic relationship with God shining his light in the world. Shared real life stories of trauma, betrayal, love, faith, hope and different things of that sort. I’m hoping to help more people by being more vulnerable and telling more of my story through my music and my art. One thing I've taken away from the process of making the album(s) is that God is in everything; God is everything and you can find him everywhere, and the album is just a beautiful journey from the first to the last track. It takes you somewhere, I think it's very relatable and if people really open their hearts to receive it, they'll find themselves in each track. I used to say certain tracks are for some people and certain tracks are for other people; but now I believe it's all for all of us and I think we can all find ourselves in this album. That's one thing I've taken away, that God is everywhere. So many people are backing your journey, based on how your music has made them feel. I've seen hundreds of comments about your music helping them on hospital beds, and others accepting Jesus Christ with your song in the background. What do you say to the thousands of messages filled with love that are backing your new journey? It makes me feel incredible that my fan base, my friends, and my family are supportive. They’ve seen the fruit of my life, they trust me, they know that what I put my mind to I will accomplish. This was one of my goals and I accomplished it. But, the work for me is far from done and I'm just grateful they are on this journey with me, and that they are having a great time. We are all having an amazing time creating and sharing this music. I love my TRUE Music family. I love my fans, I love my supporters, and I love my family and friends. I'm just really thankful and want to be a good steward over all the opportunities that have been coming my way. I never want to take any of this for granted, because God has been so good to me. His plans have been better and bigger than anything I could have ever dreamed of.

“I

always felt like I didn’t really fit in, I wasn’t like a normal Black kid. I was just different—which I didn’t see as something unique at the time. ” It’s a Saturday afternoon and we’ve just begun our Zoom interview. Though a member of the NY Giants, Darren is currently not playing due to a hamstring injury he received earlier and is currently rehabbing (including dry needle/acupuncture). He’s wearing an Army green hoodie and tan baseball cap that he wears both frontwards and backwards during our interview. At 6 '6 and 245 lbs, Waller, a muscular frame gilded in tattoos doesn’t look like what he’s been through. The stats go as follows: he’s a Pro-Bowler, has played two positions (widereceivers and tight end), played for three NFL teams and has charted on the NFL’s Top 100 Players list for numerous years (a list voted on by his peers). Though he moved around a bit as a young child, he claims Acworth, Georgia as his hometown. “Growing up for me was interesting, I was good at sports, I was smart, I feel like I had a nice personality and had manners.”' Waller offers. A bit of a late bloomer (“I didn’t have attention from girls”- he mentions) Waller excelled in school and football. But off the field, Waller was starting a bout with addiction to several drugs including oxycodone, marijuana, liquor and cocaine (which he did later in life). This addiction led to several suspensions in both college and in the NFL. Though he had been fined and ordered to rehab before, it wasn’t until he overdosed in his jeep, he realized he truly had a problem. Waller went to a rehab program in Maine (which the NFL paid for). To ground himself, he got a job working at a local supermarket after. Today, Waller lives a sober life though he admits to having a cigar every now and then. He’s started the Darren Waller Foundation that helps the youth avoid and overcome addiction. He’s also learned to express himself through music, releasing several projects that he writes and produces. Lastly, he’s newly married to Kelsey Plum, a fellow athlete who plays for WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces. Nothing about this man’s life has been normal—but oddly enough that’s the criteria for being a champion. We sat down to chat with Darren Waller about his journey.

BLEU: Most of us (especially Black men) spent a big portion of our childhood playing or being around sports. What made you want to pursue a career? Why football? WALLER: I don’t know to be honest. I think my parents kind of threw me into it. I think my first year playing football—I was like four years old. I knew I was kind of good at it, early on. I didn’t think I would be playing professionally or even in college—I just felt like I knew what I was doing. The love faded in and out as life happened, but… BLEU: Tell us a little bit about growing up in Georgia. WALLER: I always felt like I didn’t fit in. I wasn’t like a normal Black kid. The music I listened to, the things I was into and the way I carried myself—I’d get made fun for it. I didn’t have any attention from girls, I wasn’t really into fashion. I wore random stuff that didn't match. A different kid, really sensitive. Not normal. I didn’t see it as a unique quality at the time, back then you just wanted to be like everyone else, fit in, be cool. I guess I found my footing socially once I started getting good at sports. It’s kinda easy to make friends and be in with the cool crowd. Sports afforded me the chance to go to college. BLEU: What was it like transitioning from wide receiver to tight end? WALLER: It was definitely a journey. I played one [my rookie] year as receiver. I was still gaining weight and moving at a goodpeed. They saw some traits, the tight end position was changed and they were like “we are going to try you at tight end when you come back”. I went and watched YouTube highlights and films of tight ends like Jimmy Graham, Travis Kelce, Tony Gonzales, Zach Hurst, etc. At the time, I didn’t give myself credit for my football IQ that I already had. I already had a feel, I just needed the opportunities to go out there, learn and grow. Learning how to block these big dudes like Terrel Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Matt Judon, Darrius Smith—these top guys I had to come in and learn how to block—and they were like fucking kicking my head in. It was rough for a while and it took some time. A very windy road of learning and getting experience. Being better than I would tell myself [in my mind] that I was and getting out there and surprising myself with some of the things I was doing. I was able to take the opportunity [afforded by teams including The Raiders] and run with it.

BLEU: You’ve talked openly about addiction and sober life. I find stories around this very interesting and not enough people who look like us talk about this? Walk us through the journey from addiction to sobriety? WALLER: I started using it when I was fifteen. Started with painkillers and graduated to smoking weed, drinking [alcohol] and doing other kinds of pills and stuff as the years went on. At the time, I didn’t know addiction and alcoholism were on both sides of my family—so I was kind of predisposed from the jump. I was already wired with that thinking. You don’t really turn to drugs and alcohol the way that I did unless you’re trying to numb something or run from something. You think you are dealing with a problem but you’re not. That [drug and alcohol use] was from not fitting in, feeling like I wasn’t good enough as I was. It continued through college—I was failing drug tests, getting kicked off teams. The consequences kept coming but I was already deep in addiction—so they didn’t register for me. I had an overdose on pills in August 2017 and that was the last day I used. It was almost a month to the day before my 25th birthday so you’re looking at a 10 year run free of addiction. BLEU: Glad you’re still with us ‘cause a lot of people aren’t. Are you still living a sober life? WALLER: Yeah. I mean I like smoking cigars—I'll smoke a few of those a week but I don’t drink, I dont’ smoke weed, I don’t do anything like that. BLEU: What made you want to start the Darren Waller Foundation and what do you want to accomplish with it? WALLER: Through my sobriety and growing spiritually, I feel like the greatest thing I can do is give back. We’ve been able to send people to treatment on scholarship and give them sober living when they get out of treatment. Giving them the opportunity to change their life and it’s for people who wouldn’t be able to afford this. I was given an opportunity to go to treatment for free by the NFL and that experience changed my life—so I want to give that same gift to somebody else. We put like 60 something people through full treatment. Being able to do events, hang out with people and see the gratitude on their faces is a really cool thing. It all stems from my own journey, needing a helping hand and wanting to continue to pay it forward. 62

BLEU: They say you have to have a vice for every virtue. Would you say your vice now is music? WALLER: It definitely is music. Once I got sober, it turned to women and going through shit with relationships—that became a drug. But you can turn a vice into a positive direction and music is definitely one. BLEU: Speaking of music, tell us a little about how you discovered your love for music. WALLER: I'm an avid listener to music and always listened with a deeper ear. My great grandfather was a legendary jazz musician [Fats Waller]. I didn’t really know much about him. My parents had me take piano lessons as a toddler and I was in band in middle school. I really enjoyed music but once I got to high school and got on the football team, it wasn’t cool to be in the band. In college, guys on the team would freestyle—I could come up with good lines but as far as freestyling I was too anxious. After having a jazz history class my senior year, the professor said “You need to learn about the impact of your great grandfather.” I was inspired by that to start writing to beats, making songs and just stuck with it. Through repetition and time, I started getting better and making beats myself. Now, I’ve been able to do a lot of cool stuff and I feel like I’m making the best stuff I’ve ever made. I'm releasing an album coming out in February and a single in January. Just staying on the journey and loving every second of it.

" THROUGH MY SOBRIETY AND GROWING SPIRITUALLY, I FEEL LIKE THE GREATEST THING I CAN DO IS GIVE BACK. "

BLEU: How often do you create music? WALLER: Daily. I’m either working on a beat or writing a verse every day. Working my pen out and getting better at my craft. That’s what I love to do the most. It really fills my cup up and gives me that childlike joy.

There’s an artist like Mick Jenkins, out of Chicago, he’s like my favorite rapper right now. BLEU: I respect people’s right to keep their personal life private, but also wanted to give you the opportunity to speak on your marital status and your relationship? WALLER: I’m married to a human being. Not really into all of the stuff that comes with it. People look at it for what each of us do individually and that somehow makes our marriage on a different level. It’s really two human beings trying to figure it out. I support her being successful at playing basketball because that’s what she loves to do. I mean if she loved playing badminton or drawing pictures on notebook paper, I would support her doing it and wouldn’t think anything different. SHAWN SMITH

THE HOPE DEALER THE NEWLY ROC NATION SIGNEE USES LYRICAL SKILLS AND A POSITIVE OUTLOOK TO BRING A FRESH PERSPECTIVE TO THE RAP GAME. By DJ Chalant

S

hawn Smith is often described as a modern-day Renaissance man. The Southwest Philadelphia native creates engaging works of art through mediums such as music, fashion and painting to craft stories inspired by his city and upbringing. The ability to draw inspiration through various artistic realms enables Smith to approach music-making on a different frequency than the norm in the modern rap game. Smith is a 82

MAGAZINE

lyricist, but not in the way that may put off an audience who shy away from “lyrical rappers.’’ His ability to show off his skills as a wordsmith, all the while making feel-good music that fans can vibe to, is the calling card for one of the brightest upcoming stars. “Hip hop doesn’t have to be hard all the time, but at the same time how do we translate this to the hood? It has to come from the right person, it has to still be fly, be hot, and that’s what I feel I can do,” Smith said.

FA F E AT S HU I ORN E

I spoke with Smith in mid-May, fresh from releasing his single “Up If You Need Me.” The track debuted as a live in-studio performance by Smith on the NYC media platform MajorStage. Produced by Jay The Great, “Up If You Need Me,” in which Smith glides over the wavy instrumental, with themes that talk about family and loyalty and making it out of circumstances. The song, in Smith’s words, reminds him of a cartoon, or cartoon characters, which enables him to tap into childhood memories to create something he believes to have a nostalgic feel. Viewing the word from the lens of a cartoon character battling life’s circumstances and obstacles appears to be a common theme in Smith’s forthcoming EP “Hope Dealer.” Smith acknowledges that though he may not be the most positive person in the world, he understands the significance of having a positive theme in his music for people who grew up in similar situations as him. “Having hope is sometimes all we have, especially coming from where I can from, where you really can be born with nothing. I feel like hope is maybe something that people think is cliché, but in reality, there are people out here that don’t want you to have it. So it takes a Hope-Dealer to come through and get that to you when you need it. I’m

from Southwest Philly, and I feel like I can be a voice not just for everyone in Philly, but for everyone from similar places,” Smith said. Smith understands what is expected coming from Philadelphia, a city with a strong lineage of dope MCs. He is from the same section of Philly as the legendary hiphop group, The Roots. The Roots frontman and revered rapper Black Thought, was one of Smith’s earliest co-signers and is his mentor to this day. With icons like Black Thought and Jay-Z in his corner, Smith is poised to make significant waves in the industry. As a newly signed artist to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, he aims to continue raising the bar like fellow artists who came up under Jay-Z’s camp whom he grew up idolizing.

Artists like Kanye West, whose early work like College Dropout and Graduation, provided a framework for the feel-good music that Shawn illustrates in his craft. “Sink or Swim is my motivational lifestyle brand, It’s gonna be big like NIKE,” Smith said. Smith is looking toward the future. He plans on continuing to push the culture forward with music, fashion, and film to elevate his Sink or Swim bra. “My brand sells hope, it’s something people can get for free and can hold on to in this sink-or-swim world,” Smith said. You can stream Smith’s first three singles (Chain Gang, Up If You Need Me, & History) of his EP Hope Dealer, out now. Issue 91

LEELA JAMES ON HOW SHE CREATED A RIAA - WINNING WEDDING ANTHEM AND WHAT SUPPORTERS CAN EXPECT FROM HER NEW PROJECT By Kirby Carroll

PLUS, SHE DISHES ON THE RULE THAT HELPED HER DEFY INDUSTRY STEREOTYPES. Leela James was named the “God-Daughter of Soul” by the legendary James Brown and is often referred to as Baby Etta, after iconic singer Etta James. Also, she has one of the top wedding songs in the world, “Fall For You,” and countless tours alongside Maxwell, Anthony Hamilton, Tank, and more. Still with her strong resume and over two decades in music, the talented songstress feels some of the industry is still learning about her. In this exclusive conversation with Bleu Magazine, she walked us through her creative inspiration, unique musical journey, and how her authenticity continues to impact her career. As a child, the art form was ingrained in her and a very tangible part of her everyday life. “Music was always around me. Everybody in some shape or form was involved in it, singing or playing instruments or something. I thought it was the norm; I thought everybody could sing. I honestly didn’t take it seriously until high school. Then, I jumped to gain the exposure and experience I needed to make it a profession.” Later in 2006, she released her debut project, A Change is Gonna Come, and James has released seven albums since that time. Although it’s been far from an easy journey, her career has been consistent, an element that’s pretty rare in the short-attention span era we live in today. “I started out as a track runner, and one thing we were told is to run your race and your lane. Don’t pay attention to who is on the side. I’ve always taken that same model. I stay focused; and I don’t worry about who is on the right or left. It’s important to be yourself 84

and define yourself.” Still James admits that coming from South Central LA with an afro and strong convictions has made her career a bit more trying. “I’m not gonna be butt naked in my videos, and because of that I dealt with resistance from the labels. They try to box you in. But I just never wanted to do that.” It’s important to her that she creates and trusts her vision for her life and career, and that shows in her music. She received her first award from the RIAA in 2014 for “Fall for You,” now certified Gold, and that hit came from simply expressing herself. “I was in the studio, and we didn’t have initial intentions for the song to be what it became. One of the producers just wanted me to sing. It was like let’s see what happens, and that’s what the Spirit gave me to sing. It just started to evolve. At that time, I was coming off of having my first child. I think I was feeling very sentimental, and I had a lot of emotions. As we started recording, it felt fitting that it was a love song, and I kept envisioning a bride.” She goes on to explain that, that’s how her process usually goes. In fact, her latest single, “Right Back In,” came from scrolling through social media. “My inspiration comes from life. I’m always pulling and drawing from my experiences and indirectly other peoples experiences. I was fooling around with melodies, and that came out, because I was looking at TikTok couples and Chrisean and Blueface (laughs). Sometimes people get back together for good, and sometimes they don’t.”

Outside of music, some may be familiar with James from her time on R&B Divas and Unsung. True to herself, she showed her personality and fans connected with her story. Still she has mixed emotions when reflecting back on the time. “I was excited initially to do R&B Divas and Unsung too, so people can learn more about my story and discover more about me. But I could’ve done without the drama. I’m all for real sisterhood so when it starts to get weird, it’s time to leave because I don’t wanna do something I have to pray about later,” she laughs. While chatting with Leela, I felt a sense of humility and genuineness that felt comforting. She’s currently on a worldwide tour, which will make international stops in Sweden, France, and the Netherlands, but on our Zoom call, she just feels like a friend catching me up on her work schedule. Whether she’s unwinding with a glass of Stella Rosa, playing Kendrick Lamar (her current fave) or connecting with fans on her tour, she simply desires to impact and help others. In fact, the soulful singer is in the process of building an initiative for HBCU female students.

“I’m a single mother, Black woman, and I’ve attended college. I know what it’s like becoming pregnant and try to juggle those things. Sometimes there isn’t any support, and I think it’s important to have that. I’m very excited about my people and my young sisters, and I hope that we can do something to make a difference in someone’s life.” Looking ahead, James is excited to connect with fans on her ongoing tour and for audiences to hear the new project. “Listeners can expect a really soulful experience. It’s very grown and sexy. One of the things it reminds me of is my childhood when my parents would have these card parties and put on records and that was the soundtrack for the night. It was a vibe, a groove – it’s like that.” When asked how she feels to be compared to such musical icons and what she wants people to know about her she responded in her same humble manner. Leela James is currently on her world tour, and her new album releases this fall. Issue 91

AFTER THE RELEASE OF HIS LATEST SINGLE, ‘FLY GIRL’, DYLAN SINCLAIR IS DEDICATED TO GIVING HIS FANS TIMELESS MUSIC WITH EVERY NEW DROP. By DJ Chalant

I

n the sultry heat of August, the R&B scene was set ablaze by the release of Dylan Sinclair’s latest single, ‘Fly Girl.’ This enchanting track is an ode to a muse, drawing inspiration from the excitement of a new fling, with a “fly” chick. As the captivating melody unfolds, listeners catch a glimpse of Dylan’s dating life, a world where connection and authenticity intertwine. ‘Fly Girl’ isn’t just a song; it showcases Dylan’s ability to weave personal anecdotes into wavy musical treasure. Dylan Sinclair hails from the vibrant city of Toronto, Canada. Of Filipino and Guyanese descent, his cultural tapestry is as rich and diverse as his music. Growing up in the church, Dylan found solace and inspiration in the soul-stirring melodies of Gospel music, citing icons such as Kirk Franklin and Fred Hammond as some of his early musical influences. “Filipinos love music; our family would come together; everyone would play an instrument or sing. I was the one who loved to sing, so I would perform for the family, church, and stuff like that growing up.”

" MY HEAD IS DOWN ON THIS ALBUM, AND I’M LOCKED IN. I WANT TO GIVE A GIFT TO MY FANS." As Dylan grew, so did his choice of music and influences. He began to take a liking to 2000s R&B acts such as Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, and Solange to name a few. These figures became Dylan’s musical compass, guiding him to the forefront of the R&B stage. Dylan’s ascent in the music industry is nothing short of remarkable, steered by critical acclaim and adoration from fans across the globe. One of the highlights of his young career came in August as a headliner in the sold-out All Points East Festival in London. When asked about this performance, Dylan expressed that performing in London “was a one-of-a-kind experience.” I jokingly asked him where his favorite place to perform had been thus far. He ranked London as number one, followed by Los Angeles and finally New York City. With shows in the UK, the United States, and Canada under his belt, Dylan solidifies his international presence and impact. Dylan’s list of accolades includes being

F E AT U R E

a 2023 JUNO Award Winner; a recognition that underscores his impact on the Canadian musical landscape. He also has been featured on Spotify and Apple Music’s coveted R&B Artists to Watch list. Complex has even labeled him an “R&B king in the making.” I asked him if he felt any pressure to continue with the delivery of high-quality music after receiving such recognition. He shared that he used to struggle with pressure and anxiety, mainly because he didn’t want to be labeled a “king of R&B”, fearing that the title would put him in a box. “I’m an artist at my core; I’m influenced by many things beyond R&B. I grew up on R&B, I’m going to make R&B music, but I’m also influenced by more than that. If I could have a dream collaboration it would be with Solange or Daniel Caeser for example. I see myself as a unicorn in that genre, and sometimes I feel like R&B fans want to hear things in a particular way, but I’m going to do it with my signature style. You’re either going to appreciate my artistry, or you’re going to hate me.” With reassurance from his team, Dylan realizes he can embrace it all; with the sounds and interests that have molded him, to produce his unique spin on the genre. And that right there is at the heart of Dylan Sinclair’s success. It’s not just his undeniable talent, but also his commitment to authenticity. In an era of singles-driven music, Dylan is still dedicated to making a classic album. “I love albums that you can keep coming back to play, over and over again. I know we’re in a singles era, but I’m dedicated to making albums that stand the test of time.’ As ‘Fly Girl’ continues to buzz in the R&B music landscape, Dylan is locked in on his craft and the simple things in life, such as taking care of himself. When asked what’s in store for him in the future, he didn’t want to give too much away, but confirmed that a full-length project is in the works. “My head is down on this album, and I’m locked in. I want to give a gift to my fans.” Issue 91

HONOR EGYPTIAN CULTURE

ABOARD VIKING’S NEWEST NILE SHIP

F

By Jennifer Billock

rom the basket of a hot air balloon, two thousand feet above the Valley of the Kings; you can truly see why the Nile is the lifeblood of Egypt. The massive streak of water sweeps across the landscape, surrounded by lush green on either side that abruptly fades into light brown desert dust. Ruins rise up from the areas further inland; monumental angular shapes with clear repetition in style. Statues of pharaohs with crossed arms stand guard over the temples. Heading back toward the Nile, you can see the tall sails of feluccas, captained by local sailors, floating past a sprinkling of cruise ships. Among them, Viking Cruises’ newest Nile ship, the Aton. The newly-launched Aton sails the 12-day Pharaohs and Pyramids itinerary, hitting six stops from Luxor and back, with air connections to Cairo. The design and architecture of the ship bring Egyptian culture from the surrounding verdant and arid landscapes all the way on board, starting from the moment you walk into the atrium, where four identical floor-to-ceiling columns lead you into the main space. “[With] Egyptian architecture, you kind of come away with two or three things,” says Richard Riveire, the ship’s godfather, architect,

92

MAGAZINE

and one of the founders of design firm, Rottet Studio. “You come away with this idea of monumentality, and the repetitiveness of things. And that idea made that atrium happen.” The columns in the atrium evoke feelings of being at Karnak Temple; a place packed full of massive, intricately carved and colored pillars. It’s a step away from Viking’s standard design, which is all about smaller-scale intimacy and providing spaces that feel private even though you’re surrounded by at least another hundred people. The Aton was custom-built for just Nile sailings, so Riveire truly wanted to embrace the surroundings in his design. A desert landscape with pops of color comes into the ship’s design as well. In Cairo, as you drive down the highway to get to the pyramids, you’ll see buildings that look like they have been torn in half, with painted walls in bright colors facing the road. Back when the highway was expanded, the government tore down the buildings that were closest to the construction area, leaving on display these spaces that were decorated by the former residents, amid a sea of brown buildings and brown sand.

Although the Aton’s design sticks to the light colors of the Scandinavian palette overall (it’s one of the hallmarks of the cruise company, which is based in Norway), that pop of color comes in throughout the ship’s textiles and visual features, like a red brick wall in the restaurant. “Egypt is a pretty monochromatic world other than the green right along the Nile,” Riveire says. “But if you go anywhere outside of that, it’s sort of a brown place, and then you get these really bright spots of color. The red wall at the end of the restaurant was very deliberately done that way.” Other spots in the restaurant evoke that same kind of authentic Egyptian feel. Panels along the walls, for example, have an array of wooden sticks in segmented patterns; Riveire says they’re reminiscent of the handmade wooden market crates carried throughout the country. “I’ve seen the crates holding chickens and fruit, once I saw one filled with Tupperware” he says. “You know, all kinds of household goods. You see them stacked two or three levels high on the back of motorbikes a lot.” 94

MAGAZINE

S

SPOTLIGHT

The panels in the restaurant are a stylized version, but very clearly inspired by those crates. Also in the restaurant are room divider screens near the kitchen. They’re made of dozens of flat wooden paddles strung together to make a wall. These represent the wooden peels used to pull Egyptian flatbread out of the oven. On itinerary nights where the meals focus on local foods, everything is served in dishes bought from the markets in Cairo. The clothing the waitstaff wear? Also sourced from a market in Cairo. “They’re bought locally, and they’re sourced by people who know what they’re doing,” Riveire says. And that’s the whole point of the ship’s design. Even if you don’t know anything about Egyptian culture and history, you’ll still walk away with the feeling that you experienced it on the Aton. “The art and the beauty of it is to go find those things that are the most common thing to a person who lives there,” Riveire says. “Nobody would walk through and know any of those stories. But that’s okay, because you come away with a sense of authenticity. That this all feels right.”

ICON

MIKE TOMLIN By Mark Elibert

MIKE TOMLIN’S life changed in 2007 when the Pittsburgh Steelers front office hired him to replace the Hall of Famer Bill Cowher as head coach of the legendary football franchise. Tomlin was only 34, and the pressure of coaching a team two years after their last Super Bowl win was high. Many believed that Tomlin’s hire resulted from the NFL’s Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least one person of color for head coaching and senior football operation jobs. Tomlin was the tenth Black coach in history to coach a team and the first in the Steelers franchise, which only fueled those assumptions that the Rooney Rule was in effect. However, Steelers owner Dan Rooney, the man after whom the rule is named, revealed Tomlin’s hire didn’t happen because of the policy since he interviewed another person of color before him. Regardless, Tomlin wouldn’t let a new rule dictate his success in the NFL. For Tomlin and the Steelers, the hire couldn’t have been a better move for both sides. In his second season, Tomlin became the youngest head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl when his team achieved the coveted feat. He almost won it all again in his fourth season, losing to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLIII. If that weren’t enough, Tomlin also won three divisional titles in four years and had a winning season in his first 16 years as a head coach in the league, and he’s currently in his 17th season. The 51-year-old established himself as a formidable leader for the Steelers as he extended the franchise’s storied legacy with his brand of football rooted in discipline and camaraderie. That astute football mentality came from his humble roots in his hometown of Virginia, where he was a wide receiver and tight end at the College of William & Mary. He would go on to earn a second-team All-Yankee Conference selection in 1994 and kicked off his coaching career as a wide receiver coach at the Virginia Military Institute the following year. Over the next seven years, Tomlin would work on several coaching staffs across the college circuit in schools such as the University of Memphis, Arkansas State, and the University of Cincinnati. Tomlin’s coaching journey saw him traverse various levels of the game, honing his skills and taking in knowledge from seasoned mentors. His tenure as a defensive back and wide receiver coach in the NCAA led to him becoming an assistant coach in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings.

He eventually landed his current job with the Steelers and would be known as one of the best coaches in the league. Tomlin has led his team to seven AFC North titles, ten playoff appearances, two trips to the Super Bowl, had 73 players make the Pro Bowl, and broke various team records. While accolades and victories adorn his illustrious career, Tomlin’s legacy goes beyond the field. In February 2013, Tomlin and his wife Kiya were recognized by the Chuck Cooper Foundation with the Career Achievement in Leadership Diversity and Community Service Award. He is also a fierce advocate of the annual ManUp Pittsburgh conference, which encourages men to be better fathers and role models. Tomlin’s impact on the sport, the players he’s coached, and the principles he instills are just a tiny piece of his massive influence on football and his community. In an era where Black faces are rarely seen on coaching staffs, Mike Tomlin stands tall as a beacon of stability and excellence.
