Supplying Industry leading Wash Plants with a localised Scottish Service
In 2022 Blue Machinery expanded their Terex Washing Systems (TWS) agreement across the UK, meaning that Blue Machinery (Southern) and Blue Machinery (Central) would join Blue Machinery (Scotland) in representing one of the market’s leading brands.
Over the course of the last 18 months, Blue Scotland have installed 7 new wash plants across Scotland and the North East of England. Whilst there are many companies out there supplying wash plants, very few can provide a local quality back up and support service like Blue Scotland can.
Through the Terex Washing Systems products, Blue Machinery can offer customers modern mobile washing equipment to offer greater flexibility over the older static plants. Here are a few examples of the washing solutions recently supplied by Blue Scotland.
Miller Plant
Established in 1968, Miller Plant operate within earthworks, plant hire, demolition, aggregate supply, contract crushing as well as heavy haulage and tipper hire across the North East of Scotland.
As a by-product from their crushing and screening operation the company were producing crushed rock fines, a nonsaleable material. Blue Scotland helped their customer identify that by washing the product they could turn this into a concrete spec sand.
Blue Machinery Scotland supplied Miller Plant with a Terex M1400 and a Terex FM120C.
The Track mounted M1400 comprising of a feeder, reject grid, feed conveyor, inclined screen and on-board conveyors, offers an excellent entry level robust washing unit with maximum flexibility for integration into a larger plant. The FM 120 Compact is a sand recovery unit designed to process up to 120tph and produce up to 2 grades of sand. Following the installation of the M1400 and FM120C, not only have Miller Plant have been able to turn their by-product into a concrete spec sand for the production of concrete products, but they have also been rinsing their aggregate to make a much cleaner product.

A&L McCrae
A&L McCrae have been established for over fifty years having grown from a one-man owner operator to a multi-disciplined civil engineering firm, haulier and quarry operator. The company recently acquired Clachan quarry, a sand and gravel quarry based in Cairndow. Blue Scotland worked with A&L McCrae to help them get started with their first ever washing operation.
Similar to the set up at Hoddam, A&L McCrae purchased a TWS mobile washing plant and bucket wheel. Following some help, guidance, and testing from the team at Blue Scotland, the customer was able to land on the right specification straightaway. The setup which consists of an M1400 and FM120 BW allows A&L McCrae to produce high quality washed building sand, high quality washed concrete sand, decorative washed gravels for landscaping, 10mm gravel, 20mm gravel, 40mm gravel and bulk bagged aggregates. From having never washed before, their new high output plant has meant that A&L McCrae are now able to produce the highest quality product available in Argyll.
Hoddam Contracting
With a head office located in Ecclefechan, Hoddam Contracting operate two sand and gravel quarries in the South of Scotland with a third to open soon.
The company were previously running an old static wash plant that was coming to the end of its life and took the view that the mobile tracked equipment would suit their long-term requirements, giving them the flexibility to move the plant across their various sites if needed.
Blue Scotland installed a Terex M2100 and a Terex FM120 BW which Hoddam are using to process natural sand and gravel to make two aggregate products and two sand products.
The M2100 is a tracked mobile washing plant designed for medium to large scale operations that require large volumes of high specification products. It incorporates a fully hydraulic folding on-board conveyors and can produce up to 5 products.
Terex’s FM120BW bucket wheel is a classification plant that removes silts, slimes, and clays from sand to produce up to 2 saleable products. It is capable of working in applications such as concrete, mortar and asphalt sands, quarry dust/crushed fines, lake and beach sands, silica sand, golf course sands, filter bed sands, recycled materials and iron ore.
Blue Machinery (Scotland) have secured orders for two large multi-million-pound static wash plants with full water treatment process due for delivery in Q4 2023.

FDS purchase their third Warrior 1400X
FDS (Cambridge) Ltd first established back in 2001 when they were trading as FDS Building Services.
Mainly operating in the construction of commercial units and house building, the company were sub-contracting their muck away to local tipper and grab lorry companies. FDS soon identified that it would be beneficial to bring in their own truck and plant equipment to deal with their waste materials and to import their recycled and primary aggregates from other suppliers in bulk.
6 Blue Mail | Spring 2023
Click here to watch the first bucket being loaded into the new Warrior 1400X.
2007 saw a turning point for the company when they purchased a site in Ely (Cambridgeshire) following the arrival of their first wagon and small plant. They initially brought in several external companies to process their material for them, before deciding to invest in the equipment to carry out this work themselves. This transition has moulded FDS into the business that they have become today which focuses less on building and construction work, and more on plant hire, muck away, aggregate processing and supply services.
In 2017 FDS purchased their first new Powerscreen Warrior 1400X scalping screen to work on their topsoil operation. In 2020 the company decided it was time to swap out their previous machine with another brand-new Warrior 1400X. Then in February 2023 FDS expanded their fleet to bring in a second Warrior 1400X (their third purchased from Blue Machinery) to work alongside their existing 2020 machine.
Franco De Simone, Director at FDS (Cambridge) Ltd explains his reasoning for sticking with the tried and tested Warrior 1400X: “Having initially trialled a number of screeners prior to the purchase of the first machine, we had excellent feedback from the operators on the Warrior 1400X, the price has always been right, and the residual value is there. We see Powerscreen as the market leader and have received an excellent service from Blue Central, so we have never been interested in looking elsewhere”.
The Powerscreen Warrior 1400X is a flexible scalping screen aimed at operators who require a high performing, heavy duty, versatile machine that remains easy to transport. The newest model offers improved performance, lower operating costs, and easier serviceability whilst building on the reliable foundation of Powerscreen’s previous class-leading Warrior 1400.
Designed with economy in mind, it has reduced fuel consumption which is achieved through a lower engine running speed of 1800rpm and enhanced hydraulics. A variety of media solutions means that the Warrior 1400X is extremely efficient in scalping, screening and recycling applications, and it can process a number of materials including greenwaste, soil, concrete, wood and asphalt. Powerscreen have also produced a Warrior 1400XE which has been designed to meet the needs of customers looking to use electricity as a preferred power source and creates the possibility to run the machine indoors. The 1400XE has a variety of power options available including a self-powered 72kVA generator, electricity generated by other Powerscreen machines (such as the Premiertrak 600) or it can be connected to a mains electricity supply for even further reductions in cost of ownership.
Since the transition of the business in 2007, FDS has grown substantially with a large fleet of tippers, grab wagons, low loaders, bulkers and a number of Develon/Doosan excavators and wheel loaders. Franco adds “We are proud to see how much the company has progressed and evolved since our inception in 2001. We appreciate the service and support that Blue Machinery have provided since the purchase of our first Powerscreen machine back in 2017, and it’s been a pleasure to deal with the sales, aftersales and spare part teams”.

Scrap Application – J Denham Metals
J Denham Metals are the largest independent metal recycler in the North East of England with over 60 years of experience, specialising in Ferrous and Non-Ferrous metals. The company have extensive knowledge of the secondary metal markets which allows them to compete at the very top of both domestic and international markets, supplying material to consumers all over the world.
Operating out of their 6-acre site in Bishop Auckland, J Denham Metals run an extensive fleet of metal processing and handling equipment. Blue Machinery (Scotland) have been supplying the company with Fuchs material handlers for many years now and they currently run three blue handlers in their fleet. Murray Plant (A Blue Scotland Company) also recently supplied J Denhams with a Fortress FS-95R mobile shear which has allowed the company to process larger items more efficiently. The MHL 380F is the company’s latest handler in the fleet and is being used to load their static shear, as well as the loading and unloading of trailers. The new MHL 380 is the largest Fuchs handler that J Denhams have run and is fitted with a Fuchs five tine scrap grab.
John Joe Denham, Director at J Denham Metals comments “We have a great relationship with the guys at Blue Scotland, they provide us with great service and quality material handlers. We decided to go for a larger Fuchs model this time as the amount of material arriving onsite is always increasing and the handler is feeding the largest shear baler in the country. We buy the best to stay ahead of the rest.”
Port Application
Hugh Simpson Contractors
Starting off as a two-man operation in 1964, Hugh Simpson Contractors are now Northern Scotland’s leading lifting and crane-hire company. From harbour bases in Wick and Scrabster, the 3rd generation family business specialises in contracting lifting, crane and plant hire, heavy haulage, and ship to shore stevedoring.
As part of their port handling operation the company run a number of material handlers which includes a 2003 model Fuchs MHL 360. After deciding it was time to replace one of their existing handlers, Blue Scotland brought in an MHL 380F on demo. David Simpson at Hugh Simpson explains “We weren’t initially looking to bring in a handler as big as the MHL 380, however, once we spent some time using the machine it soon became the obvious choice for us. With vessels getting bigger and deeper, it made sense for us to go with a larger machine that could keep up with the larger volumes that we are dealing with”.
The machine was fitted with a 3.6m3 clampshell grab which the company will use for the unloading of materials such as fertilizer and limestone. However, they have also several other attachments for the handler which will be used to handle timber and piping projects.
David went on to discuss the performance of their new handler: “We know how reliable the Fuchs handlers are as our old MHL 360 is now over 20 years old and has served us well with no major issues. However, we have been blown away with the performance of this new machine. Its power, stability and ease of use is miles ahead of any handler we have ever operated.”

Singleton Birch boost their efficiency with new Doppstadt AK 315
Singleton Birch Ltd have been operating for over 200 years and have established themselves as the UK’s leading independent lime supplier. In more recent times, the company has diversified into various different sectors through the creation of Birch Lime, Birch Energy, Birch Chemicals, Birch Solutions and Birch Waste.
Birch Energy is an expert in anaerobic digestion, specialising in the design, construction and operation of anaerobic digestion plants, and developing renewable energy projects.
To maximise the gas yield of the product going into their anaerobic digestion plants they shred the material to increase the surface area. The company were previously using an older tub grinder to process this material, however, following a successful demo of a Doppstadt AK 315 high-speed shredder from Blue Machinery (Central), Singleton Birch were able to improve their operation significantly.
The company are using their new high-speed shredder to process a variety of materials including potatoes, sugar beet and horse manure. The 315 is the smallest mobile shredder in the AK series, featuring a Stage V 310 hp MTU engine. This state-of-the-art engine features electronic torque optimisation for high torque coupled with low fuel consumption. Its large slow running fan ensures a low noise operation.
The AK 315 is a highly versatile compact machine that is suitable for use on a wide range of materials including waste wood, green waste, organic waste, tree stumps, root wood and fine shredding of SRF (solid recovered fuels). Singleton Birch’s machine is fitted with free-swinging hammers to ensure that any contaminants such as tramp material does not cause damage to the machine, which is essential in this application. The free-swinging hammers have individual easily replaceable tips that can be adjusted to suit the type of materials that needs to be grinded.
The Doppstadt high-speed shredder has allowed the customer to improve their efficiency through increased tonnage and lower fuel consumption. Alistair Forman, Contracting Sales Manager at Singleton Birch Ltd comments “We have known Sean and the guys at Blue Central for a number of years now following on from our previous purchase of a Doppstadt DM mixer. We decided it was time to bring in a new shredder to process our material and although we looked at a few options, we knew that the Doppstadt machines are reliable, and Blue had one readily available so it worked out very well in the end. Since we have been using the new AK 315 we have massively increased our throughput, when compared to the old machine this new shredder is getting through four days’ worth of material in just a single day.”

Andy Day appointed as Westeria Sales Manager for Blue Central
The Westeria brand is well-known in the industry for their class-leading windsifting technology and over the years Blue Machinery has had great success in supplying Westeria technology into their turn-key systems.
Blue Central has now taken-up the gauntlet of having a greater push of the Westeria product range to highlight the advantages of adding individual machines in to existing lines to further enhance material recovery. To this end, they have appointed Andy Day as Sales Manager for the Westeria brand in their territory.
Andy comes with 7-years experience with Blue Central, having dealt with Project Management and Technical sales of their turn-key systems. Andy says, “We’re excited to now focus on the full, Westeria product line – some machines people may not be fully aware of. Westeria’s build quality is wellknown, and their approach to R&D in product development is refreshing, offering benefits our customers truly need, rather than ‘bells and whistles’ gimmicks.”
As well as the AirStar range of windsifters, the Westeria range includes the AirBasic mobile windsifter, offering the same patented air nozzle technology, with 60% more ‘puff’, allowing the machine to slot-in anywhere on site or be used on a batch basis for different materials.
This range extends in to the AirLift and AirLift Move (the latter a mobile machine) offering a patented suction hood separation system, ideal for many materials, especially with small density differences between the light and heavy fraction.
Another patented product, the DiscSpreader, offers uniform feeding on to optical sorted acceleration belts, eddy currents, screens and secondary shredders up to 3,000mm width. The beauty of this system is the advantage of feeding with just a 500mm wide conveyor, from any side of the machine, without affecting performance.
The innovative WeKea range of modular belt and chain conveyors offers conveyors on short lead-times, to suit any application with the added option of supplying flat-packed. We can fit over 100 metres of conveyor in one shipping container. Finally, Westeria offer a range of conveyor and moving floor bunkers from the MultiFeeder and MovingFloor series at capacities from 10 – 441m3! With many options to suit a wide range of applications and materials, they also come with a 7-year warranty on the moving floor wear strips.
Andy is looking forward to promoting the Westeria brand and welcomes enquiries from any sector and application to advise how Blue Central can help.

The company also had a Rammer simulator on the stand so that visitors could test their breaker operating skills.
Allu
Allu have been a market leader in screening buckets for over 35 years and used Con-Expo to launch several new innovations. This included the new Allu Variable Drum which enables you to replace fixed TS blades without the need to open the chain-box. Enabling a variable drum setup means that individual drums or blades can be changed quicker, saving you time and money.
Shearcore
Shearcore had a presence both inside in the north hall and outside in the festival grounds on the OilQuick Americas stand. Inside they displayed the 9.8 ton FS-95R and the 7 ton FS-75R. On the OilQuick stand they showed a working FS-25R.
There is also talk of a new model coming to market soon which will be even bigger than the FS-145, so watch this space!
