Popa Chubby – The Essential £9.75 This essential collection compiles 22 tracks that Bland recorded for the Duke label. It serves as the best introduction for anyone wanting to explore the finest moments of Bobby Bland’s discography. This is the material upon which Bland's reputation was built : blues played by small to mid-size ensembles, complete with sassy horns and a ringing vibraphone - fronted by Bobby Bland's amazing voice. Bobby's style of soul-blues was punctuated with a slick big-band sound, showing the considerable influence of B.B. King-flavoured guitar riffs.
Bobby Blue Bland - Little Boy Blue - The Duke Sides 1952-1959 £10.75 Low Country Blues is Gregg Allman’s first solo record in 14 years and features Dr. John on piano, guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, and Burnett’s brilliant go-to rhythm section: bassist Dennis Crouch and drummer Jay Bellerose. This is Gregg Allman at his very best -- a self-assured, spirited collection. Low Country Blues finds him putting his own stamp on songs by some of the blues giants whose work has long informed his own, from Muddy Waters and BB King to Buddy Guy and Magic Sam.
Gregg Allman – Low Country Blues £12.99 The classic 1992 album newly remixed and repackaged which has been unavailable for many years. The late Phillip Walker was one of the mot talented blues guitarists of the postwar years and this album was the finest moment of an illustrious career. This is a studio set recorded with Otis Grand as guitarist, producer and bandleader. The original release won a Handy Award and rightfully so-the horn driven arrangements are both rootsy and contemporary and the 2 guitars of Phillip Walker and Otis Grand come together in one of the most superb collaborations.

Her recent UK tour was a huge success with sell out shows, blasting out some full on riffs in Stevie Ray style and showing her Hendrix influence. Although Joanne’s playing is heavier than some UK blues guitarists, she still has the blues and sings with passion, being recently awarded with ‘Female Vocalist Of The Year’ in the British Blues Awards. Roadhouse - Dark Angel £12.99 £11.99 - Roadhouse was formed in 1991 by Gary Boner, ably assisted throughout by the driving bass of Bill Hobley and the the powerful drumming of Roger Hunt. Seizing on an eclectic mix of influences from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Creedence Clearwater Revival, the band has developed a sound all of its own Cover art is once again by all time acclaimed CD cover artist, the legedary Vaughan Oliver. So you are not just buying a CD, you are buying a piece of collectible art. Zed Head - Mortal Man £13.75 £12.99 Canadian-bred Zed Head are musically firmly in the guitar trio style, with lots of cars, Harleys and women. This is kick ass classic Blues Riff Rock; the kind of Texas Boogie Woogie you’d expect from the reverend Billy F. Gibbons and his compadres. This has to be one of the best examples of Southern Rock you have heard in ages – and it’s made in Canada. How can a band from the North capture the Soul of the South? Who cares?! Just sit back, let the music blow back your hair and enjoy Zed Head’s brand of Southern Rock and Roll Blues Boogie. Made the way it should be, it involves sweat and swagger, the swilling of bourbon and very, very loud guitars. This might just be the best album that little ol’ band from Texas never made. Tom Principato - A Part of Me £13.99 £12.99 - Washington DC’s Tom Principato is a guitar player rooted in the blues but who is an adept at all the variations, from Latin to New Orleans funk. Back in 1984 he recorded “Blazing Telecasters” with the late Danny Gatton and has been knocking on the door of Fender heaven ever since. This is a special album for Tom because it’s the first using all original material. Plus he’s invited some heavyweight pals as guests—including Sonny Landreth, Chuck Leavell, and Brian Auger. Also available: Blues Licks & Voodoo Things £13.99 - Guitar Gumbo £13.99 - Really Blue £10.99 Raising The Roof £13.99 – House Of Fire £10.99 – Play It Cool £10.99. Buddy Guy – Livin’ Proof - £12.99 - Buddy Guy is the greatest exponent of classic Chicago electric blues. He is a thrillingly inventive guitarist, a passionately soulful singer and a peerless showman. Living Proof includes 11 new studio cuts, including the first single, “Stay around A Little Longer” with B.B. King, the first time these two Blues greats have worked together. It also includes one other feature, this time with Carlos Santana on “Where the Blues Begins.” The opening track, “74 Years Young” establishes the theme of this album, after all this time and countless career accolades, Buddy continues to search for new sounds and fresh ideas and this is one of his more recent best, up there with Skin Deep. Also in stock Skin Deep £8.99 – Buddy’s Blues (Chess Recordings) £7.99 Mark Robinson - Quit Your Job – Play Guitar £13.99 £12.99 - Mark Robinson picked up his first guitar at age 13 in his hometown, Bloomington, Indiana. Drawing on musical influences ranging from The Allman Brothers to Charlie Christian, Mark practiced every lick until it was perfect. But he also found his own musical path, part Rock, part Blues—but most definitely Mark Robinson. Mark’s debut album, “Quit Your Job – Play Guitar”, is raw and soulful–Blues-infused, guitar-based roots music. Backed by some of Nashville finest musicians, the songs and performances are steeped in Chicago Blues, Memphis Soul, Rock & Roll and Americana. Larry Taylor - They Were In This House £13.50 - As Eddie Taylor's stepson, Larry grew up at the feet of the Chicago blues elders. Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed and Elmore James were frequent visitors to the house where they would sample his mother's soul food so it's no surprise to find songs by these three appearing amongst Larry's own numbers. The recordings collected here, with Larry Taylor on vocals and drums, were mostly cut in 2004 but there are four tracks from earlier dates. The various band members include some of Chicago's finest including the late Willie Kent on bass. 24 PESOS - Busted Broken And Blue - £12.99 - 11 boot stompin’ originals drawing from influences as diverse as Ray Charles, The Meters, James Brown, Freddie King, Howlin Wolf, and the Roots. However this is not just regurgitated blues but has a refreshing original stamp on the blues with great arrangements. 24 Pesos can be technically good and they can be good time - not always an easy mix to achieve. 4.
Jools Holland And His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra - Rocking Horse £12.99 Here’s a new soulful blues compilation of songs from Jools Holland and his band featuring some great musicians and vocalists. This is the sort of CD you can play when you have friends and relations round and for those who didn’t think they liked the blues. There are many featured guests including: Allen Toussaint Ruby Turner, Michael Mcdonald, Rosie Mae, Booker T, Sam Brown, David Sanborn and Louise Marshall. Tracks include: Got My Mojo Working, Ain’t Nobody’s Business, I’ve Got News For You and Rockinghorse. The Doors - Live In Vancouver 1970 £13.75 - Features guest performances by Blues Legend Albert King on four songs. The Doors - Live In Vancouver 1970 as a 2CD set from their two hour live show at the Pacific National Exhibition Coliseum in Vancouver from their 1970 Roadhouse Blues Tour. The two-disc set contains 22 tracks of previously unreleased material spanning much of their career Eric Clapton – Clapton £12.99 £11.99 - Eric Clapton releases his 19th solo CD with an album infused with blues and older style songs. Some well known songs, some brand new originals and little-known country blues. He keeps holding a torch for the blues and bringing new people to the genre. He was doing it as a teenager and still doing it in his sixties. The CD features an all star cast of JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond - Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks. Erja Lyytenin – Voracious Love £13.50 – This is Finnish slide guitarist Erja Lyytinen most personal album, as she presents 13 love songs (including a cover and a couple of co-writes) in the rock /blues format. She cleverly traces the hopes and disappointments of her protagonists via moments of deep blues and virtuoso playing that conjures up an array of colourful tones and riffs. For this is a blues guitar album that will satisfy fans on a number of different levels ranging from the heartfelt meaning of the songs to Erja trademark sizzling solos which help colour the lyrics and embrace real feel and clarity of expression. Also available: Dreamland Blues and Grip Of The Blues at £12.99 each. The Michael Louis Band - South New York £11.99 - Brooklyn’s Michael Louis Band is a hard working, big sounding and righteous power Blues trio that cuts to the chase and drives on. Louis has found the Seger boogie and the sublimely rocking profundity of Cream. North is definitely meeting South. These sessions were recorded across Dixie in Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Tupelo. This disk is rife and full with soul, funk, country, Southern rock or even “psychedelta. Feedback and fuzz, sliding and grinding and rapid fire axe share time with soulful stretching out like in opener “Ain’t That Kinda Man.” “Shade Tree” pops and funks like it has no backbone. Allman Brothers imbues “Let It Go”, “Molly” is an acoustic Ragtime tribute to a certain kind of lady and “Cause of Us” Cissily struts like Nocentelli, Batiste and Porter. Heavy is all you need to know about “Reasons and Seasons.” Probably the coolest cut to flow across my tympanic membranes in a while is a deep North MS take on “I Fought the Law”! These guys bring it from the woods to the city. Mick Simpson - Hard Road £9.99 – This is a blues guitar electrically charged album featuring tracks influenced by artists such as Robert Johnson, BB King, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Moore. Within the music industry Mick Simpson is widely acclaimed and has worked as a session guitarist alongside artists such as Elkie Brooks, BB King, Gary Moore, Snowy White and Bill Wyman’s ‘Rhythm Kings’. As a songwriter his songs have been featured on radio and TV and in major films, winning ‘The International Songwriters Award’. This release has strong songs with a mixture of blues and rock on a small independent label and just waiting to be heard. Worth a tener of anyone’s money. B.B. & The Blues Shacks - London Days £13.50 - B.B. & The Blues Shacks are well-known for their original blend of swinging and grooving blues, deeply rooted in 1940s and ‘50s jump blues. The new songs combine a powerful blues foundation with elegant soul harmonies. Within a week fifteen tracks were nailed down, an entertaining list of songs with moving soul ballads, grooving dance tunes and deep blues. Also available: LP version £15.99 5.
Boo Boo Davis - Undercover Blues £13.99 - During autumn 2010 tour Boo Boo decided to record on one of his days off and he even included a Christmas and a gospel song. For the recording a funky (but full analog) studio in rural Switzerland was chosen; nothing beats the sound of warm tubes and real tape. All tracks were recorded in six hours and one take with all three musicians in the same room. Raw, loud and simple, just like they sound live on stage. Recorded on October 5, 2010 in NedRov Studio. Also available: Boo Boo Davis - Ain't Gotta Dime - Name Of The Game - Drew Mississippi The Snake - Can Man - East St Louis all at £13.99 each. We have extended the offer of a FREE Black & Tan Records Sampler with your first order of either a Boo Boo Davis CD or any other Black & Tan CD. Offer now ends 28/02/2011 All FREE samplers will be dispatched in February John Primer - Call me John Primer - Best Of and New Tracks £11.99 - John Primer is one of the torchbearers for Chicago blues. He paid his dues in the house band at the famed Theresa’s Lounge, then as a sideman with Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Magic Slim and in the last few years has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, releasing many well-received solo albums. This is a “best of” collection recorded between 1987 and 2009, though it also includes five previously unreleased tracks. Primer’s gritty, back to basics approach will appeal to anyone who likes their blues 30° proof and served neat. Also available from John Primer on the Wolf label - Blue Steel: A Tribute to Elmore James - £11.50. James Kinds - Love You From The Top £11.99 - Blessed with a stirring, gospel enriched vocal delivery James Kinds once represented the new generation of Chicago blues but he was unable to maintain a high profile beyond the Westside circuit that had long nurtured his dynamic soul tinged act. After moving to Iowa he made a name for himself in that state and was inducted into the Iowa blues Hall of Fame in 2008. At long last he has a nationally distributed album which properly spotlights his voice. He fronts a four piece band (two guitars, bass and drums) with tenor sax man Eddie Shaw guesting on four tracks. Studebaker John / Maxwell Street Kings - That's The Way You Do £12.99 - Maxwell Street Kings pay homage to the early days of Chicago blues, a time when the open-air market on Maxwell Street rang with the sound of street musicians; when musical giants like Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Hound Dog Taylor, Little Walter, Elmore James and JB Hutto could be heard in steamy clubs on the city’s south and west sides and Chess records ruled the airwaves. The trio capture the spirit of that era when the blues were raw, primal and oh so vital. Lucky Peterson - You can always turn around £13.99 £12.75 - Lucky Peterson - blues singer, keyboardist & guitarist - was discovered by blues legend Willie Dixon when he was 3 years old and released his first record at 5. Peterson went on to play behind Little Milton, Bobby “Blue” Bland and Kenny Neal. He recorded for Alligator, Verve, Blue Thumb and Birdology/Dreyfus Jazz, where he recorded what many call his finest album, “Black Midnight Sun”. ‘You Can Always Turn Around’ is his first album in seven years, and is an uplifting collection of songs, using the gritty clarity of acoustic roots-blues (with modern touches) as its main musical vehicle - and features songs by Robert Johnson, Rev. Gary Davis, Blind Willie McTell, Tom Waits, Ray LaMontagne and Lucinda Williams. Peterson delivers fine vocals and, as usual, plays a mix of instruments. On piano, Lucky sounds like a bluesy Leon Russell. Also available: Black Midnight Sun £13.99 – Heart Of Pain £12.99 6.
Paul Lamb & The King Snakes – Mind Games £11.99 - The new album from Britain’s greatest Blues Harmonica player. Paul Lamb is something of an institution on the International Blues circuit and this album sees him and his band blowing up a storm on a collection of home penned numbers and a few blues standards. “You just have to stand back and admire the sheer brilliance of the musicianship; this new session is the latest in a line of standout recordings, ten out of ten from me, and no argument!”. Phil Wight – Blues & Rhythm Magazine Lynwood Slim & Igor Prado Band Brazilian Kicks £13.50 - Lynwood Slim is a name synonymous with West Coast Blues. Brazilian Kicks teams up California native Lynwood Slim with the premier jump blues outfit, the Igor Prado Band from Brazil, for a surprisingly tasteful and swingin’ set of music featuring the smoldering guitar acrobatics of left-handed, upside-down guitarist Igor Prado. The John O’Leary Band – Two For The Show 2 CD Set £11.50 £9.99 - Harmonica player and vocalist John O’Leary, was a founder member of The Savoy Brown Blues Band, a member of the John Dummer Blues Band and Mainsqueeze. This 2-CD comprises of The John O’Leary Band 2004 studio album “Sins”, and a hitherto unreleased 2006 ‘live’ album. The two albums showcase this top-class British blues band. Eddie Turner _ Miracles & Demons £13.99 – Eddie Turner’s influences stem from both the Afro-Cuban rhythms of his heritage and his immersion in the music of the time – Blues, Rock and R&B. He continually receives rave reviews for his psychedelic guitar-playing. Although not a completely new style but putting all his influences together this does make for a great listen. JW-Jones Midnight Memphis Sun £13.50 - “JW’s got it down! So much soul, and nice material. You can’t beat it. I am telling the truth.” – Hubert Sumlin Canada’s Top Touring Blues Act, JW-Jones is back with another blistering CD. On this new release, Jones teams up with two legendary bluesmen, Hubert Sumlin and Charlie Musselwhite. Midnight Memphis Sun contains 8 originals and 4 covers. The majority of the disc was recorded at the birth place of Rock and Roll, Sun Studios in Memphis, and features modern song writing about current issues including the global recession (check out the R&B flavored ‘Off the Market’) and the Bernard Madoff scandal (on the hard-hitting ‘Born Operator’). Dana Gillespie – I Rest My Case £13.75 – Ace’s resident diva, Dana Gillespie, returns with her first studio blues album for the label since 2003’s “Staying Power”. It’s a potent mix of her tough-and-witty blues stompers (Funk Me, It’s Hot!) together with some lyrical ballads that touch on the heartache of break up and loss. All are shot through with Dana’s characteristic wit. Some of the best blues this side of the pond with great musicians and Dana’s wonderful vocals. Full lyrics are included in the booklet. Simon McBride - Since Then £12.75 – A stellar all original collection of blues and southern influenced rockers and ballads, proving that this PRS endorsed Irish guitarist/singer/songwriter is up there with the best. The sheer quality of material, arrangements, and the pace of this 14 track album would do justice to some of the biggest names in the business. Also available ‘Rich Man Falling’ £11.99 Joe Louis Walker - Live On The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise £12.99 – Recorded live during the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise earlier this year, JLW was joined on stage by guests Johnny Winter, Tommy Castro, Duke Robillard, Kenny Neal, Tab Benoit, Watermelon Slim and a dozen other blues who’s who artists. Also in stock: Joe Louis Walker – Between A Rock And The Blues £12.99 Dani Wilde – Shine £13.50 – Pulsates with a warmth, energy and maturity that belie her years. She’s a true triple threat as a singer, guitarist and songwriter. She penned 9 of the 11 tracks herself, and uses them as a vehicle to tell stories. Prime examples include the dark emotion she inhabits on “Don’t Give Up On Me,” the touching minor-key lament “Abandoned Child,” the defiant exuberance of “I Don’t Even Care” 7.
