Welcome to Bluesletter 311 This Bluesletter has been posted to our entire 1000+ mailing list. However due to increasing cost we are going to have to limit the amount we send out. Recently not everyone has been receiving the Bluesletter each time due to the cost of mailing. In future we will be reducing the mailing list to include those who actually buy CDs/DVDs. There are some on our list that have not bought for more than two years. There are a few that have never bought from us. Therefore if you want to continue receiving The Bluesletter either join the Blues CD Store Members Club (best blues deal on the planet!) or buy CDs/DVDs from us, even if only occasionally. If we have an email address for you we will email The Bluesletter whether you have bought or not unless you tell us otherwise. (To join the Members Club see details on page 8)
Our member’s competition from the last Bluesletter was won by Mr Barszczynski of Rugby. He correctly stated that Guy Davis was the blues artist who’s album title ‘Butt Naked Free’, appeared on the front cover of Bluesletter 211. He wins a rare promo vinyl album ‘Queen Of The Blues’ signed by Koko Taylor. This month’s members competition is a little easier. To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is name the very well known blues man who’s album title ‘Free Beer And Chicken’, appears on the front cover in the header of this Bluesletter. You can either add the answer to you order form or tell us over the phone when you order. The winner will be selected at random and they will win a pack of 10 blues CDs. The winner will be announced in the next Bluesletter. Remember, you have to be a member to enter.

The end result is an exciting and contemporary fusion of blues, funk, jazz and rock that is undoubtedly Schofield’s best work to date. Recorded in New Orleans, the album has the funky edge but the trip to New Orleans was more about working with producer John Porter, long admired by Schofield for his work with BB King, Buddy Guy, Santana and many others, and which have netted ten Grammy awards. Also in stock: Heads Tails & Aces, Ear To The Ground and Live From The Archive. All £12.99 each Tommy Castro – Presents The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue £13.50 - Tommy Castro is one of Alligator’s best-selling, hardest-touring artists,The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue is an ongoing series of Tommy Castro-headlined all-star shows with a cast of blues and R&B faves joining Tommy for a dynamic blues and soul party. Also available: Tommy Castro – Hard Believer £13.50 / Guilty Of Love £12.99 Warren Haynes – Man In Motion £12.99 – Warren Haynes’ long-anticipated solo album, ‘Man In Motion’ (Provogue Records), is a timeless collection of songs that crackle with modern vitality yet draw on his deepest roots as an artist. The disc pumps fresh blood into the heart of soul and blues, stoked by Haynes’s Herculean prowess as both a powerhouse singer and guitarist – a reputation he’s earned as a member of three of the greatest live groups in rock history: The Allman Brothers Band, The Dead and his own Gov’t Mule. Also available on vinyl for a limited period: £14.99 + £2.50 P&P Kenny Wayne Shepherd – How I Go (Ltd Edition + 4 bonus tracks) £12.99 Utter the phrase “young blues guitarist” within earshot of anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the modern musical vanguard and the first name they are most likely to respond with will be Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Still barely in his 30s, the Louisiana born axeman and songsmith has been selling millions of albums, throwing singles into the US Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist. He met Stevie Ray Vaughn at 7, shared the stage with New Orleans legend Bryan Lee at 13. As an adult, he continues to create genre-defining blues-infused rock n’ roll. Guitar World placed him right behind BB King and Eric Clapton on their list of blues guitarists and this CD enhances this position and gives the strongest indication yet of his gifted songwriting talent. The album pairs Kenny’s deeply soulful and impassioned takes on classic material like Bessie Smith’s ‘Blackwater Blues’, Albert King’s ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’ & The Beatles ‘Yer Blues’ alongside the strongest writing and cowriting of his career thus far. The hard-rocking, blues-based, guitar-driven album sounds young, it sounds fresh. Yet it has that distinctive energy and vibe drawn from the deep heritage of the genre. Kenny is growing as a songwriter, musician and producer. For fans of Joe Bonamassa, STV and Eric Clapton. 3
Tedschi Trucks Band – Revelator £12.99 - After building successful solo careers, husband & wife team Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi join musical forces to create the Tedeschi Trucks Band. The Tedeschi Trucks Band is an eleven-member ensemble overflowing with talent and a shared musical vision. Their longawaited, song-oriented debut album Revelator blends Delta blues, Memphis soul, ‘60s rock and ‘70s funk into an entirely original sound. In addition to the combined weight of Tedeschi and Trucks’s equally renowned abilities, Revelator benefits from an impressive circle of talent that the two brought together. Trucks co-produced the album with multi-Grammy®-winning engineer Jim Scott, whose genre-bending credits include popular albums by the Dixie Chicks, Johnny Cash and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Philip Sayce - Ruby Electric £12.9 £11.99 - ‘Ruby Electric’ Philip Sayce’s new half studio/half live album. ‘Let the Love In’ opens the album and is a great duet with Philip’s former employer Melissa Etheridge. A total of 14 tracks with spectacular live recordings of songs like Daydream Tonight, One Foot in the Grave, Powerful Thing and Alchemy amongst others. Philip is regarded as one of the most spectacular young rock guitarists out there and on the verge of making his breakthrough (surely to come with his brand new 2012 studio album). Last but not least, the live tracks are mixed by the legendary Eddie Kramer. ‘Ruby Electric’ is a great addition to add to the collection of any rock fan and it prepares us for what will be coming in 2012. Also available on vinyl for a limited period: £14.99 + £2.50 P&P Buddy Whittington - Six String Svengali £13.50 £12.75 - Named by his ex boss of 15 years as “possibly the greatest Bluesbreaker of them all”. When the boss is John Mayall and the “all” includes Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout and Coco Montoya, this is no lightweight accolade. Following the critical success of his self-titled solo CD in 2007, Buddy returned to Hurricane Sound in Garland, Texas earlier this year. Buddy really does have it all…a great sense of melody, great touch dynamics, great phrasing, and a killer tone. A modern Texas Bluesmaster. Add to this, thought-provoking lyrics delivered with strong, honest vocals and you have one of the best exponents of Texas blues today. “Seven String Sevengali” not only embodies the sound of Texas Blues today, ably demonstrates the awesome guitar talents of Buddy Whittington but also through his contemporary songwriting proves that the Blues is not a dead entity. “The album is an example of what Texas Blues 2011 sounds like and a damn fine addition to any comprehensive record collection" - Blues Matters. "‘Six String Svengali’ is the Texas string bender’s most succinct album so far and the latest step in a fast growing solo career. **** (4/5)" - Get Ready To Rock. "As an example of stellar-playing and tone, very few six-stringers can eclipse Buddy" - Guitarist. Eric Sardinas - Sticks And Stones £12.99 £11.99 - Slide guitarist and singer-songwriter Eric Sardinas has a reputation for packing intensity into his live performances. Now Sardinas has put his onstage lighting in a bottle for the new album ‘Sticks And Stones’, an 11-song powerhouse of his trademark slide guitar that is a vehicle to drive his inspiration from the roadhouse in to mainstream music. Sardinas’ unique mixture weaves his heavy blues and rock threads in to a flamethrower to the listener and whether electric or acoustic, takes them on a ride encompassing the past, present and future of what music is meant to be. Eric Gales – Transformation £12.99 - As both an African-American left-handed guitarist of extraordinary ability and an expressive vocalist, it is natural for people to compare Eric to Hendrix but Eric has developed a unique hybrid sound that also draws upon influences as diverse as Albert King & Eric Johnson. A unique amalgam of styles, Eric Gales stands head & shoulders among other guitarists in his genre. ‘Transformation’ is the next logical step in this prolific artist’s career as it is deeply centred in the blues but played with the edge and aggression of a young guitar hero. Also available Relentless, Crystal Vision, Physchedelic Underground, The Story Of Mile Life – All at £12.99 each or £23.75 for any two / £45 for four. 4
Black Country Communion - 2 £11.99 - Black Country Communion are the Anglo/American rock band comprising vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Trapeze), drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin, Foreigner), Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Alice Cooper) and blues rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Back with a follow up to the hugely successful debut album released in Sept 2010. The album was no.3 in Classic Rock’s “Album of the Year” poll. Once again produced by Kevin Shirley ‘2’, is darker and deeper than the debut and will appeal to fans of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Free. Karl Demata Band - Cross The Mountain £12.99 £11.99 - First solo album from guitarist Karl Demata . As a studio musician Karl collaborated with artists ranging from Hazel O'Connor (and producer Martin Rushent) to David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepowers, Wowen Hand). With influences ranging from Cream, Mountain, Led Zeppelin and The Allman Brothers Band, 'Cross The Mountain' is a guitar-heavy album full of blues-rock power trio flavors that is not afraid of exploring more contemporary and diverse influences from the psychedelic hints to the Americana suggestions in 'Never Come Around' Gary Moore – Live At Montreux £11.99 - This concert from Montreux in July 2010 was his last performance to be filmed. The setlist draws heavily on his hugely successful rock albums of the eighties, stirs in a couple of his classic blues tracks with some memorable hit singles and includes three brand new songs that would have featured on the album left sadly uncompleted on his death. Gary Moore was one of the finest and most respected guitarists the British Isles have ever produced. This concert shows just what a talent we will miss." . Also available on DVD with extra tracks £14.99 / Blue-ray £16.99 Paul Rodgers & Friends – Live At Montreux £11.99 - In 1993, Paul Rodgers released the acclaimed blues based album ‘Muddy Water Blues’ with contributions from many special guest artists with a shared love for the blues. In July 1994 the tour in support of this album rolled into Montreux. The regular tour band was joined through the evening by a number of special guests to create a typically unique Montreux festival performance including an amazing finale of ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’ where all the guests join in. As well as tracks from the ‘Muddy Water Blues’ album there are all the classic tracks that you would expect from across Paul Rodgers highly successful career. Also available on DVD £14.99 Virgil & the Accelerators – The Radium £12.99 – The debut album from the new kids on the blues block. They have been gaining experience for a while now and the influences are fairly obvious from to Joe Bonamassa, SRV, Hendrix and many more. This album is not out until 26th Sept but you can order now . Jeff Healey Band - Live At Grossmans 1994 £11.99 - This CD release was recorded at Grossmans Tavern in Toronto on the 22nd and 23rd April 1994. Includes classic cover versions of Lennon & McCartney’s ‘Yer Blues’, Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Voodoo Child (Slight Return)’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘All Along The Watchtower’. David Sinclair Trio - Take Me There £13.99 £12.99 Contributions from Paul Jones, Robin Trower, Andy White & Richard J. Parfitt. Ten top new songs by man who’s seen and watched it all. Third album by admired blues-rock trio led by singer and guitarist David Sinclair, otherwise known as music journalist, author and former judge of the Mercury Music Prize. Sinclair formed the band in 2005 since when they have gigged continuously. Album produced by Jordan Fish at Studio 91 Robben Ford - Keep on Running £10.99 £9.75 - A modern-day master of blues guitar Robben Ford mixes modern electric blues, rock and R&B. On this CD he’s joined by an all-star lineup that includes Mavis Staples, John Mayall, Edgar Winter, Bob Malach and Terry Evans. Ford's signature wailing guitar, his direct, honest vocals, his rockin' (and rock-solid) band, and the addition of some soulful horns all add up to an album that rocks and grooves from beginning to end. 5
Giles Robson and The Dirty Aces - Crooked Heart Of Mine £12.99 £11.99 Perhaps what marks out Giles Robson and the Dirty Aces from other bands working in the blues genre today is the wide range of influences they weave into their dark and original material. Within the thirteen tracks on Crooked Heart... we see the band swing between Canvey Island/Tom Waits-esque stomps ‘The Mighty Incinerator’ and ‘Cooling Board’ to the album's title track, the sensitive and dynamic ‘Crooked Heart of Mine’. Crooked Heart...is country influenced melancholic blues charting the highs and lows of the wandering life with Robson's vocals at their most dynamic and his harmonica showing its unique melodic blues style. Tight, pared down funk permeates ‘Swindler For You’ and ‘Twenty Gallons Of Muddy Water’ which also showcases Robson's vocals. Highly praised by Blues Matters magazine and it gets a top review in the blues section of the current Classic Rock magazine. Ian Siegal And The Youngest Sons – The Skinny £11.99 - Ian Siegal’s fifth album finds him in the hill country of north Mississippi, working with a group of local musicians. The result is a captivating combination of Siegal’s songcraft and voice with the distinctive sounds of the hill country. The Youngest Sons are: Garry Burnside (youngest son R.L. Burnside); Robert Kimbrough (youngest son of Junior Kimbrough); Rodd Bland (youngest son of Bobby Blue Bland); and Cody Dickinson (youngest son of the notable Memphis area producer, Jim Dickinson). Produced by Cody Dickinson (of the North Mississippi Allstars and Hill Country Review). Paddy Milner – The Curious Case Of Paddy Milner £12.99 - Hailed as one of the finest blues pianists of today, the album is as much inspired by Brian Wilson’s melodic pop symphonies as Deep South Delta Blues. Milner is recognised as one of the finest blues players around today and enormously respected by his peers – just read the praise from Dave Brubeck and New Orleans piano legend Jon Cleary. He is a founding member of the much talked about Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion, the hippest monthly blues & roots night in London at the famous club, which features the best of British including friend & fellow forerunner on the scene Marcus Bonfanti, and special guest stars from the U.S. “He makes the piano sing” Jools Holland. Errol Linton - Mama Said £13.50 £12.75 - The busking Brixton bluesman is back with his first recording in ten years, a superb album of highly original and distinctive blues and reggae-flavoured songs which reflect on London life. Consisting of twelve songs, ‘Mama Said’ distills Linton’s mercurial talent, the songs being both loving and acoustic and tough and electric. Strong response previous albums found Errol touring internationally, sharing the bill with Afrobeat legend Tony Allen, joining New Orleans’ trumpet prodigy Abram Wilson’s touring band and representing Brixton on Radio 3’s World On Your Street. On 'Mama Said' Errol sings of contemporary urban hassles drawing a lyrical portrait of working class London life. The CD features Abram Wilson on trumpet, Adam Blake on guitar and Pete Zivkovic on piano /organ. Hugh Laurie – Let Them Talk £9.99 - A glorious celebration of New Orleans blues, ‘Let Them Talk’ unites Laurie’s musical talent with a very personal selection of standards and lost blues classics performed with his band and some very special guest stars including collaborations with the Soul Queen of New Orleans Irma Thomas and Sir Tom Jones on the little known ‘Baby, Please Make A Change’. Thomas also leads the vocals on ‘John Henry’, while Laurie’s lifelong hero Dr John provides a momentous collaboration on ‘After You’ve Gone’. Another legend, the producer, musician and songwriter Allen Toussaint, contributes horn arrangements throughout. Also available on vinyl for a limited time: 2 LP Set £19.99 + £2.50 P&P 6
Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes – Cadillac Jack’s Number One Son CD2 £9.99 - Double live CD from the master of rocking Rhythm and Blues. Recorded at The Opera House, Newcastle on 26th November 2002. Features a track by track synopsis written by Southside Johnny of the songs written by Steven van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Goffin/King and the their own self penned compositions amongst others. Elvin Bishop – Raisin’ Hell Revue £13.50 £12.99 - Elvin Bishop’s musical biography is no secret to anyone who has been into blues or rock music over the last forty years or so. Along the way he’s carved out a niche all his own, playing an appealing mix of rootsy rock & roll, R&B and barroom boogie, steeped in the heavy blues he learned from Little Smokey all those years ago. So when a bunch of close friends who also happen to be consummate musicians are sequestered together, as they were when they were at sea on the 2010 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, what else are they going to do but unite forces and create some truly exemplary music? This wonderful musical experience was saved for posterity – this is one of those performances where you really can hear that everyone was having a good time. Bonnie Raitt - Original Album Series £15.99 – This ‘Original Albums Series’ release features 5 Bonnie Raitt albums – Green Light/Home Plate/Streetlights/Sweet Forgiveness/The Glow. If you don’t have any Bonnie Raitt in your collection (and why not!) this would be a good way of getting to know this wonderful lady singer, guitarist and song writer. Canned Heat – Live At Montreux 1973 £11.99 - This concert from Montreux in 1973, their only appearance at the festival, captures them at their peak. Includes classic Canned Heat tracks such as ‘On The Road Again’, ‘Rock And Roll Music’ and ‘Let’s Work Together’. Features guest appearance from blues legend the late Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown on four tracks. Track: On The Road Again / Please Mr Nixon* / Worried Life Blues* / About My Ooh Poo Pah Doo*/ Funky* / Night Time Is The Right Time / Let’s Work Together / Rock And Roll Music / Lookin’ For My Rainbow / Shake ‘n’ Boogie, *featuring Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown on guitar & vocals Rockpile – Live At Montreux 1980 £11.99 – Rockpile were formed in the mid-seventies by Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. Rockpile here at Montreux are in fantastic form and this CD enhances their reputation as one of the best live bands of their era. Only live Rockpile album ever released. Often overlooked by blues fans maybe because of their popular hits and they are not so bluesy but Dave Edmunds plays a mean rock n roll style guitar and the blues influences are there for all to hear. Might make a nice and slightly different addition arsenal of music. Features the hit singles ‘I Knew The Bride’, ‘Queen Of Hearts’, ‘Girls Talk’, ‘Crawling From The Wreckage’, ‘Singing The Blues’, ‘I Hear You Knocking’ and many more. Fleetwood Mac – Black Magic – The Best Of The Early Years £7.99 £6.75 – The blues may have made Fleetwood Mac, but when it comes to describing the music made by the group in their first years together, the blues barely covers it. The songs selected for Black Magic are intended to illustrate just that including emotional blues hit ‘Man of the World’ (Uk Chart #2), timeless rock standards ‘Black Magic Woman’ (UK Chart #37), ‘Oh Well’ (Uk Chart #2) & ‘The Green Manalishi’ (UK Chart #10) which translate Green’s conflicted feelings over the band. Sleeve Notes from The Times columnist Pete Paphides. Roy Buchanan – Live at Rockpalast £13.99 £12.99 – Roy Buchanan is still regarded as “the world’s best unknown guitarist” to this day. Roy Buchanan was a true master of the Fender Telecaster guitar; and his playing technique significantly influenced musicians such as Gary Moore and Jeff Beck. Roy Buchanan grew up in California, which is also where he learned to play the guitar. His first solo album was released in 1971 and his inimitable playing of the Fender Telecaster was a well-kept secret among the likes of John Lennon, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones. This Rockpalast concert was recorded at the Markthalle in Hamburg on February 24, 1985 – just three years before his tragic suicide – with Martin Stevenson (vocals), John Steele (guitar, keyboards), Anthony Dumm (bass) and MartinYula (drums). Also available Roy Buchanan – Live at Rockpalast DVD £19.99 £18.99 7
Connie Lush - Send Me No Flowers £12.75 - Connie Lush is widely recognised as one of the finest blues singers that the United Kingdom has ever produced - a fact confirmed when she was voted Best UK Female Vocalist by readers of Blues In Britain for 5 separate years. She is a highly accomplished songwriter. On this new album, she further enhances this reputation with six self-composed songs (3 co-written) and versions of ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’, Doc Pomus’ ‘Lonely Avenue’, and two traditional numbers ‘Jesus On The Mainline’ and ‘Nobody’s Fault’. Connie is most ably backed by : Peter Wade, guitars; Nick Skorecki, piano, keyboards; Terry Harris, bass; and Michael Weizman, drums. Hokie Joint - The Music Starts to Play £13.99 £12.99 - British blues-based 5-piece, Hokie Joint, release this second, much anticipated album, ‘The Music Starts To Play’ which sees influences drawn from the darkness of the Delta to the depths of Danube. Since releasing their acclaimed debut album ‘The Way It Goes…Sometimes’, Hokie Joint have had the honour of sharing the bill alongside legendary artists. Formed in late 2007, Hokie Joint have created their own unique brand of dirty, roots based groove music reminding the blues world, especially via their dramatic and raw live shows, that the music they hold so dear is about more than just a guitarist’s dexterity. They’ ve been spreading a sound as fresh and vibrant today as the pioneers of the ‘60’s blues revival were before them. Hokie Joint are a little different mixing blues and harmonica with European influences and a refreshing change on the blues scene. The Urban Voodoo Machine - In Black ‘n’ Red £13.99 £12.99 - With their lurching sea shanties, debauched murder ballads, messed-up tangos and whiskey-soaked gypsy stomps, some reckon they’re from the same stable of stallions as Tom Waits and Nick Cave; others point out the last gang in town swagger of The Clash and the hellbound blues that John Lee Hooker first dragged out of the swamp. Featuring between 7 to 12 musicians playing guitars, drums, fiddle, trumpet, banjo, washboard, upright bass, gong, mandolin, accordion, saxophone and even empty bottles & tie racks to build their unique Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop’N’Stroll. Also in stock debut album: Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop ’N’ Stroll £12.99
