Produced by Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes), the album features Hart’s scorching interpretations of ten songs, with Bonamassa on guitar and his ace band filling out the tracks. “Beth’s got a pretty heady voice, very reminiscent of Janis Joplin,” says Shirley, who has produced Bonamassa’s last five albums. “She’s also got a lot of Etta James in her, but hadn’t really accessed it. With this material, there is a gentleness to the way she delivers the most heartfelt tunes that she hasn’t shown before. It’s very cool, she’s done a fantastic job”. She collaborated with Bonamassa and Shirley on choosing songs, and the final set list features numbers made famous by artists including Billie Holiday (the title track, ‘Don’t Explain’), Aretha Franklin (‘Ain’t No Way’), Bill Withers (‘For My Friend’), Ray Charles (‘Sinner’s Prayer’), Delaney & Bonnie (‘Well Well’ - featuring a vocal duet with Bonamassa), Tom Waits (‘Chocolate Jesus’), Etta James (‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ and ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me’) and others. Leslie West – Unusual Suspects £12.99 - Nobody sounds like rock ‘n’ roll legend Leslie West. Absolutely nobody. West has been in command of one of the biggest, boldest electric guitar tones known to man or beast from his band Mountain through to his riveting new album ‘Unusual Suspects’. His voice is even more recognizable - a powerful mix of honey and gravel that falls somewhere between Otis Redding and King Kong. He explains “As far as my voice goes, when I open my mouth, that’s want comes out - period. Plus, I’ve always loved the great soul and blues singers, so that’s instinctively how I got my phrasing,”. ‘Unusual Suspects’, is a mix of boogies, blues, rockers and ballads that puts his song writing skills at the fore. The album was named ‘Unusual Suspects’ because very rarely do you get an assemblage of this pedigree of players on one album which include; Joe Bonamassa, Zakk Wylde, Slash, Billy Gibbons and Steve Lukather. The much covered Hound Dog Taylor classic, “Give Me Back My Wig” is given a stripped back trio airing as is live favourite, Hendrix’s “Little Wing” along with a cracking version of the Isley Brothers’ “Testify”. If you like your blues on the rock side, then it is really worth trying this album. Full of excellent guitar work, superb band and good songs. Recommended. Roger Chapman - Maybe The Last Time – £11.50 – Roger Chapman, former singer, songwriter and front man with famed UK rock bands Family and Streetwalkers. The summer of 2011 saw Roger Chapman and his band The Shortlist back out on the road for a round of European City & Biker Festivals. Fortunately the audience here came to party which added a wonderful vibe to the evening, hence the inclusion of ‘Lets Spend The Night Together’….. ‘Who Pulled The Nite Down’ ‘Maybe The Last Time’, and Bob Dylan’s ‘Blind Willie McTell’. Chappo’s music rocks, has soul, can be funky and definitely has the blues influence. Virgil & the Accelerators – The Radium £12.99 – this is an impressive debut album by a young band. Although 19 year old guitarist Virgil McMahon plays blues rock guitar round the UK blues scene, it is fair to say this is more of a classic rock album. Pete Feenstra writing for the ‘Get Ready To Rock’ website (www.getreadytorock.com) gives it a 5 star rating and says “It's so rare for any band to work up the kind of intensity levels that make this album such a fire cracker. The licks, the grooves, the songs and a lively but classy mix allied with Virgil's tough vocal are all that you could ever want from an album like this. And while the lyrics are for the most part the old retro rock school of hand me down clichés about 'bad girls' etc, it simply doesn't matter because Virgil McMahon's guitar playing is right up there with the best of them.” There are touches of Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonamassa plus classic 70’s rock sounds but this album doesn’t sound retro, it sounds like an album made now with classic rock influences in abundance. Highly recommended. 7

Toronzo Cannon - Leaving Mood - feat. Carl Weathersby £12.99 - Growing up in the shadows of Chicago's blues mecca, Theresa's Lounge, had a lasting effect on Toronzo Cannon. This led him to pick up his first guitar as a teenager and learn to sing and play the sounds he heard. Inspired by the 3 Kings (Freddie, B.B. & Albert), a little Hendrix and some 70s R&B/Soul, Toronzo soon developed his own powerful, gospel-flavored vocal style and electrifying stage presence. "Aside from his fretboard chops, Cannon is notable for being one of the few local artists to emphasize original material in his live performances...his lyrics are witty and vivid." - Living Blues.
