Now approaching his 76th birthday, Mayall shows no sign of slowing down and will spend much of 2009 touring Europe and America with the new band. Affectionately regarded as the 'Godfather of British Blues', Mayall's influence on the genre cannot be overestimated in a career stretching back to the mid-sixties that has nurtured the talents of Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Coco Montoya, Aynsley Dunbar, Walter Trout and Buddy Whittington amongst many others. Harrington, ran Atomic-H Records out of his church basement recording local blues and gospel musicians (including Eddie Clearwater, formerly Eddie Harrington). Harrington captures that after-hours, smokey-blues bar atmosphere. West Side Blues is a real blues studio album with a live feel. Hokie Joint – The Way It Goes … Sometimes £13.50 – Blues CD Store gave this British band a review in Bluesletter 309. This CD grooves and some great harmonica playing by Giles King. “If you like traditional blues and would like to hear it knocked into shape for the 21st century, buy this CD now.” 8.

Bobby Jones – Comin’ Back Hard - £14.99 - The material featured on “Comin’ Back Hard” was recorded during the very same sessions that produced the critically acclaimed release ‘Lowdown Feelin’ by The Mannish Boys. “Jones, who sings the lion’s share of cuts on the Mannish Boys’ new album, Lowdown Feelin’, is that rarity among blues performers, especially those of his era.” – Blues Revue Big James & The Chicago Playboys - Right Here Right Now £13.75 - Big James" Montgomery has a solid pedeigree in the world of R&B. He played with Little Milton, Albert King and Buddy Guy before becoming trombonist and lead vocalist with the Chicago Playboys, the Windy City's premier R&B band. After the passing of former bandleader Johnny Christian, James and saxophonist Charles Kimball reformed and revitalised the band, turning it into a dynamic, soulful sextet. The Radio Kings The Radio Kings - £13.50 - The Radio Kings, the Boston-based blues duo are almost eerily reminiscent of the like-minded Fabulous Thunder birds. The Radio Kings, return with 11 new songs that explore the spectrum of American Music: the Memphis influenced Can’t Keep A Good Man Down to the Dion meets California pop of Donna to the busier The Moanin’ Blues and Watch The Trains Roll By. The Magic Sam tune She Belongs to Me and O.V. Wright’s You’re Gonna Make Me Cry round out the record and these classic blues and soul tunes go back to the roots of the band’s earliest shows in 1991. CC Jerome’s Jetsetters - Introducing.… £12.99 - This album is a powerful mix of Blues, Rockabilly, straight-up Rock and Americana. CC Jerome has been involved in the 1950s rock n' roll scene for over twenty years and delivers an impressive assortment of rockabilly, blues, straight-out rock and Americana backed up not only by rhythm section aces but also by Gene Taylor on keyboards and Big Pete on harp. Otis Taylor - Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs £13.99 - Otis Taylor’s latest CD throws a light on the complexities of love in all of its forms. In addition to Taylor’s trademark haunting vocals and simple but stirring guitar riffs – a combination often referred to as trance blues – the album features guest appearances by Gary Moore and jazz pianist Jason Moran. Also in stock: Definition OF A Cirlce £13.99 John Hammond - Rough & Tough £14.50 - A well-travelled blues troubadour, the latest recording by John Hammond features him with just his guitars and harmonica revisiting songs by the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf & Blind Willie McTell, plus a couple of originals and even a cover of "Chattanooga Choo Choo". Critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and on Rough & Tough he does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica playing with expressive vocals. Lewis Cohen - Ain’t Like Me £12 – First full CD from British blues troubadour Lewis Cohen. He just loves pre war acoustic blues and don’t you just know it by his passionate vocals and guitar playing. He covers Robert Johnson’s Travellin’ Riverside Blues and Patton’s Tom Rushen Blues but throws a few in of his own that could have been written and played 70+ years ago. He really has the traditional acoustic feel in the pocket. Lewis plays lovely slide and is a good picker. For one of his own he turns to a raw electric slide guitar on ‘Tell You That I Love You’ but for the rest the slide is played on a national steel guitar. Maybe surprisingly, there are also a couple of Tom Waits covers and none better than ‘Chocolate Jesus’. If you love acoustic blues you’ll love this CD from a relative newcomer to the UK blues scene. Two re released Taj Mahal albums: Taj Mahal - An Evening Of Acoustic Music £13.75 - Now available once more, this superlative 1993 concert recording from Bremen features the legendary Taj Mahal in solo performance and also as a duo with Howard Johnson guesting on five tracks. It may be a familiar repertoire but these songs seem to never have sounded better. Also available for a limited time on 12” vinyl (2 x LPs) £29.99 Taj Mahal - Taj Mahal & The Hula Blues £13.75 - "A cultural blend of joy, love and harmony" - that is how Taj Mahal sums up those fruitful days in the idyllic studio in Kauai, in the course of which the "Hula Blues" band developed an unmistakable, individual and organic sound. With effortless abandon the band plays a Mahal classic, "Mailbox Blues", a beautifully flowing instrumental, "Sacred Island" and a couple of songs "The Calypsonians", "Coconut Man", with subtle pop potential. The groovy Mélange of "Hula Blues" ranges from the festive to the sentimental and definitely marks a high point in Taj Mahals career. Samuel James - For Rosa, Maeve And Noreen £12.99 - Samuel James is a performer of stunningly singular talent. A master of fingerstyle, slide, banjo, harmonica and piano, and has just turned thirty. He has musical influences ranging from Skip James and Sonny Terry to Gus Cannon and Charley Patton but Samuel James is not a revivalist. His songwriting is unparalleled in contemporary blues. While musically one could compare him to Patton or Cannon, his writing goes in another direction entirely. His songs are often written as linear stories, novels in musical format: O.Henry meets Mose Allison.

Blues & Blues/Rock DVDs Joe Bonamassa - Live From The Royal Albert Hall 2 DVD Set £17.99 Fresh off the release of his album The Ballad Of John Henry, Bonamassa’s headlining debut at arguably the most prestigious concert venue in the world. “May 4, 2009 was a day 20 years in the making,” says Bonamassa. “I have never been so honored in my life. It was truly larger than the sum of its parts.” Bonamassa averages 200 shows every year, and with each gig, he comes more into his own as a virtuoso and a vocalist. At the Hall, Bonamassa had the added honor of being joined onstage by the legendary Eric Clapton. The Times of London cited Joe’s “searing excellence and showmanship,” and Planet Rock said, “The sight of two of the world’s best guitarists trading solos was more than a little thrilling.” This two disc digipack DVD, which also features an exclusive interview with Bonamassa, presents that magical night in full—for posterity, and for all the fans that couldn’t be among the 4,000 concertgoers filling the seats. The twelve-camera high definition, surround sound shoot was produced by Bonamassa’s longtime collaborator Kevin Shirley. Pigeonhole Bonamassa at your peril—sure, the blues is the anchor, but this virtuoso refuses to play inside the box. Any box. Enjoy!” Jack Bruce & Robin Trower – Seven Moons Live DVD £17.99 – Here’s another DVD which is bound to be in demand. One of his teachers is former next-door eighbor Mississippi Fred McDowell, one of the most influential bottleneck players ever. Johnny Woods, also a Mississippi man, was born in 1917, in a small town called Looxahoma. His delightful harmonica playing is as much rooted in the single note of North- Mississippi Fife And Drum band tradition as it is in the multi-faceted music of blues legends like Sonny Boy “John Lee” Williamson. DVD was recorded some twenty years ago in the back of the Swingmaster record shop – informal & nothing short of superb. Little Feat - Skin It Back: Rockpalast Collection DVD £14.99 – This Little Feat DVD continues our series of releases from the archives of legendary German TV series Rockpalast. Taj Mahal - An Evening Of Acoustic Music Double 12” LP £29.99 The first vinyl edition of Taj Mahal’s legendary Bremen concert from October 1993 is a true piece of art. Artist Henning Wagenbreth designed the cover and to came up with a new picture for each song, the combination of which constitutes the album sleeve. This wonderful German visual artist proves how much his work is sparked by his love for African-American culture. With these new paintings, the classic Mahal solo / duo performances – Howard Johnson guests on five tracks – is enriched in a vibrant kind of way, adding to a new listening experience. Also available Taj Mahal - An Evening Of Acoustic Music on CD £13.75 Geoff Muldaur And The Texas Sheiks - Texas Sheiks 12” LP £25.99 - In early 2008 Geoff Muldaur and producer Roger Kasle made a positive decision in the face of adversity. Their mutual friend Stephen Bruton, Texas music man extraordinaire, was fighting cancer. With and for the ailing Stephen, musical signals of personal relief and artistic diversion were meant to be set, with a small group of players gathering for spirited musical sessions in Austin, Texas. In the end they had a tremendous cast of players. Reviews – by Delbert Black Jack Bruce & Robin Trower - Seven Moons Live £12.99 – After the release of the successful studio ‘Seven Moons’ CD, the next step was to see if it would work live with two blues rock legends of the last 40+ years and these elder statesmen of the genre didn’t disappoint . Their 3rd live gig together was captured for CD and DVD in Holland last February. Having been at the Shepherds Bush gig in August, I can say this CD really does do their live performance justice. Jack Bruce hasn’t been well in recent years but he’s back and on top form (how old is he?). Robin Trower hasn’t lost any of his feel and still plays those fluid guitar lines with the usual, more than a nod to Hendrix. The CD starts with Jack sincerely welcoming the audience and you feel he’s glad to be back in the blues rock arena. The first three tracks are in order as on the studio version, opening with Seven Moons which has the distinctive Jack Bruce slightly unorthodox vocal lines and chord progressions with Trower’s unmistakable Strat sound and early on Robin takes the opportunity to solo to the end of the track. ‘Lives of Clay’ is a little funky and the mood drops with the weird, slightly spooky ‘Distant Places Of the Heart’. By track 4 they resort to Cream’s back catalogue with ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ and the younger but experienced drummer Gary Husband belts out a solid steady beat. At 8 minutes it allows a fine guitar solo and Jack Bruce to add some bass runs. Probably one of the best live versions of this standard I’ve ever heard. The next track Carmen is a slow and melancholy song and then back to the Seven Moons studio album for the next six tracks which include the atmospheric ‘Just Another Day’ featuring Jack’s bass and the funky ‘Perfect Place’ with Trower’s wah wah guitar. The slow blues ‘Bad Case Of Celebrity’ is a personal favourite and precedes the more up tempo ‘Last Door’. The album finishes maybe predictably with two Cream songs and both are stonking versions with some great rock bass from Jack. White Room is superb and as the song breaks, you can feel the anticipation in the air before the guitar solo comes in. Robin Trower doesn’t try to copy Clapton and does his own thing, which is equally valid and clocks in at over 3 minutes. The album ends with ‘Politician’ and once again Trower pours new blood onto this classic. Jack Bruce has come full circle, doing what he is best at and he once again has a spark in his playing . Robin Trower compliments the songs perfectly and dare I say it, every bit as good a partnership as with Clapton . You don’t get such good live albums that often and if you like Robin Trower and Jack Bruce you will love this live album. Also available: Seven Moons (£12.99 and Seven Moons Live DVD £17.99 Urban Voodoo Machine – Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop’N’Stroll £13.50 This is The Urban Voodoo Machine’s debut album having originally formed 6 years ago in 2003. “All fifteen tracks here are stand alone classics…… fifty minutes and twenty three seconds of pure listening pleasure.” The CD is contemporary traditional blues in the best possible way. Opening up in a traditional blues style with ‘Down in a Hole’, lyrically modern but typical of the blues and down on your luck bluesmen. “A classic blues track that chugs along like a freight train.” Following on is “ the rockabilly-ish ‘Always Out’ and a top class bluesy love song with Down By The River’”. “ ‘Stole My Dog’ is a hilarious tale of a relationship split and the squabble of ownership of the mutt.”… “Can O’ Worms’ details the story of a witness to a murder and features a guest appearance of Spider Stacy from The Pogues on tin whistle and backing vocals”. “Other outstanding highlights are ‘Love Song #666’ which is a brilliant tango”….. “The suicide lullaby ‘Emptiness’ which originally appeared on the promo e.p”. and the track “ ‘Sounds From The Urban Voodoo Machine’ which has been reworked and is better with the full band sound.” This is an album which pays homage to traditional blues but at the same time has a totally modern slant and sounds fresh. Not many bands can achieve and produce a very good contemporary traditional album such as this without just being a retro band. If you are looking for a new band to give you hope in moving traditional blues forward, this maybe for you. However a word of warning, there are some explicit lyrics that may offend some people, so if you maybe offended either cover your ears at the appropriate moment or steer clear. “Quotes” from the review by Nick Browne which appeared on the Whisperinn & Hollerin .com website www.whisperinandhollerin.com is a superb review type website for all music. Check it out. 15.

The Idle Hands – All Night Sinnin’ £12 – The Idle Hands are from Chesterfield and this is their 5th album. They show experience in their playing combining a rock and funky blues feel. Fronted by the powerful vocals of Phil Allen, the workhorse guitar of Dave Robinson, coupled with some good self penned songs, it is easy to see that many blues rock fans will like this band. ‘I Ain’t Broken’ is the opening track and a very strong song with a good hook. Other stand out tracks out of the 13 are, ‘Chasing Rainbows’, ‘Al Night Sinnin’, ‘Testify’ and the Led Zeppelin fuelled ‘A Friend Like You’. Some tracks are rockier than others but The Idle Hands also take time to show their lighter side on ‘Things Move On’ with Dave Robinson playing bluesy acoustic slide guitar and Phil Allen playing harp as well providing passionate vocals. A slow blues gets a look in by way of track 7, ‘40 Nights’ and allows Dave Robinson to really wring the notes out of his guitar. All in all an excellent CD from a British band bringing back a few memories of 70s blues rock. Well played in all departments and definitely worth buying and seeing live. The previous four Idle Hands albums are now available as a 4 CD Set at the great value price of £12. Robin Bibi Band – Switch On The Live 2 CD Set £15 - Robin Bibi is one of those hard working musicians, playing several times a week to audiences across the country. This is his second live double album and really shows off what he does best. A mix of his own numbers plus many well known blues and blues rock covers including Robert Johnson’s ‘If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day’, Peter Green’s Long Grey Mare’, ‘Cold Shot’ and there’s even a Lennon & McCartney number - ‘Don’t Let Me Down’. Robin is an entertainer and a very accomplished guitarist across many styles. He does the Stevie Rays, The Hendrix thing and the funk. The recordings were made in 3 small blues venues giving a club atmosphere and as always enthusiastic crowds. Growing tired of Skiffle, which Chris had been influential in through his banjo player Lonnie Donegan, Barber wanted with learn first hand from genuine Blues musicians. The commercial viability of touring Bluesmen was questioned, but Barber used his own money and financed the projects using his own, at the time highly popular, band as the basis for t he shows. The first ones to record with the band were Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee with a 10” LP. This CD combines that brief album with previously unissued material by the two Blues musicians plus similar material by the Chris Barber band from the 1958 tour period.
