BLUES CD STORE FEATURED NEW RELEASES Eugene is a nomadic musician living his life on the road from America through Europe to Australia. He’s the son of the blues guitarist Hideaway Slim, and his mother was from the Bullock family, the same as Anna Mae Bullock better known as Tina Turner. Eugene claims he got his guitar skills from the Bridges side and his voice from the Bullocks. After many request for a live CD, March 2009 saw Eugene and his band record in San Antonio, Texas. With Seth Kibel Tenor Sax, Justine Miller Trumpet, Bobby Baranowski Drums, Eric King Bass and David Webb Keyboards and Organ, you now have the real deal, LIVE.
Eugene Hideaway Bridges – Live In San Antonio £12.99 For guitarist/lead vocalist Warren Haynes and his band, Gov’t Mule, creating a new album is akin to walking a tightrope: Write new songs that please old fans, while hopefully garnering new ones. With ‘By A Thread’, Gov’t Mule’s first studio album in three years, recorded at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio in the Texas Hill Country, the band – which also features drummer Matt Abts and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis celebrates the roots of American music, yet takes sonic forays into the future.
Gov’t Mule – By A Thread £13.99 It has been said that had Siegal been around in the sixties he would today be accorded the same reverence as artists such as Van Morrison, Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton. On his latest album, Broadside, the UK’s most dynamic contemporary bluesman shows he is not only a killer singer and imaginative songwriter, but also stylistically adventurous. This all-original album, with eight of the ten tracks written by Siegal, starts in familiar Siegal territory but then broadens to cover his love of all things Americana, resulting in his most exciting and perhaps most commercial release to date. Also available: The Dust £11.99 , Swagger £12.99, Meat & Potatoes £9.99
Ian Siegal – Broadside £11.99 ‘Rough Dried Woman’ is an anthology of the best tracks by WC Handy Blues Award Winner, Magic Slim & The Teardrops - one of the best blues bands on the planet. This CD includes three previously unreleased tracks. In the 70's and 80's Magic Slim created a special blues sound with his band "the Teardrops", which produced a new Chicago blues style.. The magic man himself plays guitar in his unique style and sings full of power - band members John Primer (ex Muddy Waters) and Nick Holt are also especially responsible for the Teardrops sound.
Magic Slim & The Teardrops – Rough Dried Woman £12.99

Buy both CDs for £24 Luther Allison – Songs From The Road CD + DVD - £12.99 ( released 12/01/2010) - Songs From The Road documentes one of the magic moments of the blues-legend Luther Allison, who died in 1997. Recorded in Montreal by the Canadian Television at 4th July 1997, only 4 days before he had to cancel his tour. In a set about nearly 90 minutes which is documented on CD in nearly the whole length, and the TVEdition about 56min. on DVD, Luther burns down a real blues-firework for his fans. Songs From The Road is the ultimate celebration of Luther Allison's powerful message to the world. Seasick Steve – Man From Another Time £10.99 £9.99 - 'Man From Another Time' is the fourth album from the freewheeling Seasick Steve. Recorded, written and produced by Seasick Steve himself, the album continues with the classic blues sound that has graced his previous albums. Opting for analogue recording equipment and his array of guitars including the 'one-string Diddely-bo' the album has an authentic quality, with reverb coming from the recording space and delay created from the original tapes. Also in stock: I Started Out with Nothin’ and I’ve Still Got Most Of It Left only £7.99. Tommy Castro – Hard Believer £12.99 – This was released in August and we missed it, so here are the details. Hard Believer is Castro’s Alligator debut and produced by John Porter (Los Lonely Boys, Santana, Buddy Guy, Elvis Costello). This release shows just how much heart and soul an album can hold. Whether burning up a frisky rocker or steaming through a soulful ballad, Castro stokes the intensity with stinging guitar and gritty singing. Songs include six typically sharp Castro originals along with some tasty covers, including Wilson Pickett’s “99 1/2 (Won’t Do)” and Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody.” Joe Louis Walker - Between a Rock and the Blues £13.99 £12.99 - One of the most heralded of contemporary bluesmen Joe Louis Walker teams up again with Duke Robillard, who produced his previous album "Witness to the Blues". Displaying his customary power house guitar virtuosity, Walker comes up with a 12 song set which shifts effortlessly between blues, soul and rock. The highly charged band includes two horn players and there is a guest appearance from guitarist Kevin Eubanks. Carl Verheyen Band - Trading 8s £13.75 - Featuring special guest appearances by Joe Bonamassa, Steve Morse, Robben Ford, Albert Lee, Rick Vito, Scott Henderson. The new recording by virtuoso guitarist Carl Verheyen features six of his favourite guitar players trading solos, and in many cases 8 bar phrases, with him. The result is an inspiring mix of styles and musical energy. Robben Ford plays a blues, Joe Bonamassa an uptempo instrumental, Albert Lee a country style song and Steve Morse a soulful ballad. Rick Vito turns in some beautiful slide playing and Scott Henderson tears up a version of George Harrison’s “Taxman”. 3.
Bill Wyman & The Rhythm Kings - Struttin’ Our Stuff £12.75 - When he quit the Rolling Stones in 1992, Bill Wyman may have thought he’d earned his retirement. But the call of music was so strong that he couldn’t resist forming his own new band, playing the kind of blues and R&B music he loved. The result was the Rhythm Kings, an all star outfit that became a huge success. ‘Struttin’ Our Stuff’ is the band’s debut album, first released in 1997 and packed with lively numbers that capture the spirit of the blues from different eras. Among the dozen tracks are jive tunes like ‘Jitterbug Boogie’ and slow blues such as ‘Bad To Be Alone’. There are also ‘covers’ of classic hits including Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Green River’ and the R&B standard ‘Tobacco Road’. All star cast includes: Georgie Fame on organ and vocals, Eric Clapton, Albert Lee and Peter Frampton contribute some hot solos, and there is an impressive roster of brass players and backing vocalists. Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings - Anyway the Wind Blows £12.75 - The 1998 released album - now available on Repertoire, plus 2 bonus tracks: ‘Sugar Babe’ and ‘Gonna Find Me A New Love’ (previously only available on a US release), reached Top 5 in the official Jazz and Blues charts and received rave reviews. Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings - Double Bill – 2 CD Set £13.50 - Bill Wyman & The Rhythm Kings roar into action on a double CD set of 24 vibrant performances that typify the former Rolling Stone’s joyous approach to R&B. There are elements of jazz, blues and rock’n’roll in the music that includes such irresistible tunes as ‘Hot Foot Blues’, ‘Hit That Jive Jack’, ‘Boogie Woogie All Night Long’, ‘The Joint Is Jumpin’ and ‘Brownskin Girl’. First released in 2001, this is a classy set by a band as exciting in the studio as they are live on stage. Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings - Best of Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings £13.99 - When it comes to good time R&B played by top class musicians, you can’t beat the sound of Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings. After Bill quit the Rolling Stones in 1993, the bass player set about forming his own all-star band. As well as touring the world, the Rhythm Kings released a succession of fine albums, beginning with ‘Struttin’ Our Stuff’ in 1998. On this CD there’s a selection of the hottest tracks from this debut album, as well as songs from subsequent albums ‘Anyway The Wind Blows’, ‘Double Bill’, ‘Groovin’ and ‘Just For A Thrill’. Kellie Rucker - Blues is Blues £14.50 £13.99 - Over the course of a professional career that has spanned more than 25 years; Kellie Rucker has appeared on the bill or onstage with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Stephen Stills, Albert Collins, James Cotton, ZZ Top, Dan Hicks, Warren Zevon, Little Feat and B.B. King. In 1985, Rucker met Albert Collins' guitarist Debbie Davies. Rucker and Davies formed a band that toured extensively for a couple of years. She has become a recording artist in her own right, releasing 3 albums, "Ain't Hit Bottom", "Church of Texas", and "In the Meantime”, all recorded in L.A., featuring the city’s finest talent. Her command of the Blues harp and her powerful singing voice have made her a key ingredient on recordings and live shows. If Kellie Rucker was a biscuit, the list of musical ingredients would include a big bowlful of Blues, a spoonful of Rock, a pinch of Zydeco, a zest of Swing, a half-cup of Americana and a dash of Soul music. 4.
Davy Knowles And Back Door Slam - Coming Up For Air £14.50 £12.99 Back Door Slam is the name of the band started by Davy Knowles on the Isle of Man in 2003/4. The band got its name from a Robert Cray song of the same name. The band moved to the US and following their storming performance at SXSW 2007, the band played 310 dates in support of their debut album ‘Roll Away’. More recently the band split with only Davy Knowles staying in the US and the remaining members returned to the UK and Europe. Davy’s new band is called Davy Knowles And Back Door Slam and have just released ‘Coming Up For Air’ which is produced by Peter Frampton. There are 11 brand new studio recordings comprising nine Knowles compositions, a compelling cover of George Harrison’s “Hear Me Lord” and a special bonus track: “Taste of Danger,” a duet with singer-songwriter Jonatha Brooke. Peter co-wrote two of the tracks on the disc, and plays guitar, bass and even sings backing vocals on some of the songs. The CD has already had some great reviews although has a different flavour to the first. ‘Roll Away’ was exciting blues rock but this new album adds keys, production and much more maturity in the songs. Roll Away has been re released in the UK. Roll Away £12.99 - Buy both albums for £25. Memo Gonzalez & The Bluescasters - Dynomite! £12.99 - New studio album, featuring one of Europe's most successful international line-ups. Since joining efforts in the mid-nineteen-nineties, front man Memo Gonzalez from Texas and the Bluescasters have been performing their unique blend of deep blues, swing, a little rock, plus soul and funk to an enthusiastic audience in Europe and the U.S.A. Mostly originals, the majority of tunes were collectively written by Memo and guitar player Kai Strauss. Right from the opening tune, you'll hear the band's new mix of funky soul and bluesy grooves. Empowered by Kai supreme guitar riffs and licks, supported by Erkan Özedemir's pulsating bass lines and Henk Punter's steady beats, Memo Gonzalez continues to tell his stories of life. He sings and plays the harmonica with passion and irrepressible energy. Beyond doubt, Kai must be regarded one of the best blues guitar players, worldwide. His playing is intense and powerful. He covers a wide range of stylistic refinement, and he never overplays. "We wanted to show the people that we were capable of broadeni ng our musical horizons. We wanted to show that we weren't just another 'shuffle, swing and slow band'", Memo says. "In the near future we will be coming out with some more songs that walk the fine edge of the blues, experimenting with funk and more soul." Delta Moon - You'll Never Get To Heaven On A Hellbound Train £14.99 £13.99 Last year Delta Moon managed to capture the hearts of both media and fans with “Howlin’ At The Southern Moon”, which was their first official European album release. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia in the south eastern part of the US, their tough but melodic brand of Southern-Blues-Rock is indeed deeply rooted in the Delta And now here comes the brand-new album: “You’ll never get to Heaven on a Hellbound Train”. We won’t break open a can of clichés to describe this record, but the phrase; their best ever is simply unavoidable! “A perfect example of contemporary Southern roots music at its most affecting.”. In stock: ‘Howlin’ At The Southern Moon £13.99 Also available at £16.75 each: Delta Moon, Live, Howlin’, Clear Blue Flame. Nico Wayne Toussaint - Blues Entre Les Dents £13.99 - French singer/harmonica player Nico Wayne Toussaint is one of those rare artists who have created, starting from Chicago blues, a completely personal vocal and performance style. His current musical universe goes way beyond his earlier influences. For the first time he has recorded songs with more French lyrics than English. A classy album on which Nico's passionate vocal style and punchy harp work are supported by a superbly tight backing band. 5.
Sean Costello - Sean's Blues £12.99 - Sean’s Blues, is a memorial tribute to the late blues great, Sean Costello. This 20 song compilation culls selections from Costello’s recording career between 1996 and 2002 and includes 12 unreleased tracks, three of which are live. The album showcases strong performances by Sean’s early quartets and quintets with harp master Paul Linden, drummer Terrence Prather, and former Costello band member Susan Tedeschi, who contributes a searing lead vocal on “Walking Blues.” Sean’s Blues represents the essence of Costello’s distinctive blues artistry. John Mayall – Tough £12.99 - 'Tough' is the new studio album from John Mayall, is well titled with a harder hitting feel and a real edge that sets it apart from his recent albums. 'Tough' sees Mayall working with a new group of musicians that has clearly revitalised him and acted as a spur to his creativity. In a genre that has always cherished experience 'Tough' proves that John Mayall still has what it takes. Tinsley Ellis - Speak No Evil £12.99 - Ellis returns with Speak No Evil which is the most guitar-driven album of his career. It features his fiercest, most brutally honest and hard-hitting original songs to date. The soulfulness and expressiveness of his guitar playing are ferocious and relentless, but when the mood calls for it, can be gentle and melodic. The depth of Ellis’ songwriting, while not unexpected, is certainly beyond anything he’s done before. Ellis seems to be pouring his soul into each and every performance with unguarded, raw emotion. With rip-roaring songs that are both poignant and humorous, Speak No Evil is wide-ranging and an inspired recording, and one of the most satisfying Southern blues-rock albums in ages. Roy Buchanan - When A Telecaster Plays The Blues £13.99 - Roy Buchanan “the world’s Best Unknown Guitarist” was one of America's most soulful masters of the electric guitar. Even posthumously, the master of the Telecaster commands the passionate respect of fellow guitarists. A pioneer in the use of controlled feedback and pinch harmonics, Roy Buchanan’s sound is simply unique: heartbreaking, searing solos, trademark shimmering tone, and a mixture of snarls, wails and squeals. The ten electrifying tracks on this live album, at times sounding as if Buchanan had plugged his guitar straight into your frontal brain lobes, bear witness to that laudatory testimony. Micky Moody - Electric Journeyman £12.99 - Micky Moody has worked alongside some of the greatest singers in the business, including Paul Rodgers, David Coverdale, Frankie Miller, Roger Chapman, Eric Burdon, Chris Farlowe and Graham Bonnet. So it is of some interest that he has written and produced an album of guitar instrumentals. A definite case of "let the fingers do the talking" (or in this case, the singing!) 'Electric Journeyman' features twelve tracks that capture Moody's rock/blues/funk/jazz influences. Jorma Kaukonen & Vital Parts - Rockpalast: West Coast Legends Vol 2 £9.99 First time ever on CD. The Rockpalast show took place in Dortmund. 10 live tracks of Kaukonen trademark guitar and includes, ‘Death Don’t Have No Mercy’, ‘Walkin’ Blues’ and ‘Jelly Raw Blues’. Big Gilson - Sentenced to Living £13.99 £12.99 –Blues in Britain magazine reviewed this CD with a good 8/10, and following on with another good review, this time in Blues Matters magazine. There are creative blues rock self penned numbers and some fine covers including ‘I Wonder Who’ , ‘Tobacco Road’ and ‘Take Me To the River’. Exciting guitar playing and awesome slide. His influences range from Johnny Winter to Rory Gallagher and The Rolling Stones to Magic Slim – you get the picture. Candye Kane – Superhero £14.99 – This is Candye’s ninth album release. Backed by her regular touring band, including her guitarist - the amazingly talented Laura Chavez, and special guests Dave Gonzales (The Paladins, Hacienda Brothers) and Stephen Hodges (Mavis Staples, Tom Waits), along with new label mates Kid Ramos (The Mannish Boys, Los Fabulocos) and Mitch Kashmar. Long John Baldry - Live - Iowa State University 1987 £12.75 - Long John Baldry was gifted with a deep rich voice which was ideal to sing the blues. This album was recorded in 1987 at Iowa State University and is a testament to a phenomenal musician of his genres of Blues, R&B and Rock & Roll. Nine Below Zero - It’s Never Too Late £11.99 - The new album recorded at Glenn Tilbrook’s London studio features twelve brand new songs (self penned) and shows the versatile nature of the band and their influences. ‘Hit The Spot’ would not be out of place on a Rolling Stones album, ‘Hit The Ground Running’ sees Dennis Greaves’ guitar working overtime a la Pete Townshend, ‘The Story of Nathan John’ is a Country tinged tale. Still a popular band live after 30 years and always produce good albums. Miller Anderson – Bluesheart £12.75 - A UK-based blues guitarist and singer, Miller Anderson has been a member of The Keef Hartley Band and been associated with Mountain, Savoy Brown, T Rex, The Spencer Davies Group and many more. Bluesheart, originally released in 2003, is Miller Anderson's third solo album in a musical career that spans four decades. It features five new Miller Anderson songs that show what a great writer he is, as well as being an accomplished singer and guitarist. These fine blues songs sit well alongside a powerful rendition of the classic ‘House of the Rising Sun’, an equally impressive ‘Smokestack Lightnin’ that segues nicely into ‘Wang Dang Doodle’. Gwyn Ashton - Two-Man Blues Army £12.75 - Multi award-winning guitarist Gwyn Ashton’s latest project is an alternative guitar and drums blues and roots/rock power duo with drummer Kevin Hickman, making creative use of fuzzed-out bottleneck slide, octave dividers, delays, loops and drums, kicking the blues into the 21st century. Like a band possessed, Ashton's fiery 2-man combo pulls no punches and delivers the goods every time. These guys are Lo-Fi, analogue, wild and dangerous! More Rock than Blues Of interest to those who like their blues with a huge dose of rock. Billy Walton Band - Neon City £12.99 Coming at you out of the blocks at 100 miles an hour Billy Walton and his power trio are everything you would expect from a hard working combo who have built their reputation on the back of relentless gigging on the hard bitten New Jersey live circuit. But there's more to this hard riffing combo than mere cutting edge musicianship as the band members in various combination open a locker full of strong songs. And when you add strong songs to strong playing and a powerhouse rhythm section, you have the basis of one hell of a band. And on the evidence of 'Neon City', The Billy Walton Band is surely a breaking band ready to happen. 'Put simply 'Neon City' may be their debut CD but it is the work of a vastly experienced outfit with enough material to match their fiery approach, without ever once resorting to cliché. Look no further than the intense opener 'Turn on the Radio' which bristles with some sizzling guitar from Billy, some tub thumping drumming and crisp cymbal work from Marcus Croan and above all a great hook - 'turn up the radio, just as loud as it will go'. The following title track is another guitar led post Springsteen type groove. The lyrics convey a dark bustling urban atmosphere - hence the title - while Billy's change of tone to a Mark Knopfler style is the perfect counterpoint. There's even room for the kind of white reggae take on 'Hypnotized' that would have graced any Police album. But perhaps the most impressive aspect to the while project is that the band are unafraid of exploring a commercial bent. On 'Soul Song' they have come up with a modern day 'standard' which features some great harmonies, a clean guitar line and another radio friendly hook, while the rather more oblique 'Set Backs' has an one of those 'nananana' sing-along hooks that lodges in the brain and simply refuses to ago away. Billy duly cuts loose on 'Spreading the Blues' on which he finds some space to indulge in some angular guitar mangling while exploring some Steve Vai style tones. On the altogether more laid back 'Distorted Views', he hangs back a little, letting the melody line breathe before applying some beautifully judged guitar lines. Bass player William Paris takes over lead vocals on the brooding portentous, 'Jersey Devil' which opens like Steve Stills ' For What It's Worth' and builds up the tension with some imposing chords and an ascending vocal line before Billy resolves the piece with some muscular guitar work in a full blow rock finale. The sudden ending acts as a perfect foil for the closing cool reworking of 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone' and only a rather curious early fade deprives us of a potential block busting finish. But there's enough in the ten tracks here to convince any new listeners that this is a cracking New Jersey band who unlike many of their contemporaries don't need hype to sell themselves; 'Neon City' is all that is good about bluesy edged, soulful tinged New Jersey rock and if there's an occasional understated feel, it merely serves to emphasize the overall impression that they could explode at any time. Perhaps they are holding something back for their autumn tour to fulfill the huge potential that this album effortlessly alludes to. Review by Pete Feenstra Chickenfoot – Chickenfoot Deluxe Edition CD + DVD Set £14.75 £13.75 This is a rock album rather than blues but many blues rockers were taken with the album when it was first released last summer. It went gold in the US and may appeal to those who like blues and rock. Chickenfoot are a true supergroup, comprising two ex-members of Van Halen including singer Sammy Hagar, guitarist Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. A high energy rock band, the sound is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin at their heaviest. Here’s a new version with an extra track and a DVD of music videos, performances, rehearsals.

Traditional Style Blues And Other Associated Traditional Music BB King - Completely Well / Live In Cook County Jail - 2 on 1 CD £12.99 - 'Completely Well' contains B.B. King's signature song 'The Thrill Is Gone' and eight other tunes, six of which were written by him - mainly in a co-writing capacity. This was King's breakthrough album which achieved him the acclaim that he so deserved and made the world sit up and take notice of him. It also marked the change from B.B.'s 'old' style to that identified with his later ABC recordings, with the inclusion of horns and overdubbed strings. 'Live In Cook County Jail' catches B.B. firing sparks on all eight cylinders, with an audience that are totally over the moon with his playing. It includes possibly the best live version of 'The Thrill Is Gone' as well as fabulous versions of classics like 'Everyday I Have The Blues', and 'Sweet Sixteen'. Also just released: BB King - Anthology 1962-1998 3 Disc CD + DVD Set £16.99. Snooks Eaglin - Teasin’ You £12.99 - All Music Guide gives this one five stars; you might give it even more (were that possible), given that this reissue comes out on the heels of Snooks’ untimely death at the age of 72. We’ve added a couple of bonus tracks (I’ll See You in My Dreams/Mr. Sandman and That Same Old Train) to this modern blues masterpiece from the New Orleans blues legend, too; Includes Baby Please Come Home; Soul Train; When It Rains It Pours; Teasin’ You; Dizzy Miss Lizzy; Black Night; Sleepwalk; Traveling Mood; Jesus Will Fix It; Don’t Take It So Hard; Heavy Juice; Lilly Mae; My Love Is Strong, and Red Beans. The complete 1992 release (and more)! 13.
James Harman Band - Black & White £12.99 - Pick up this 1995 Black Top release for some cool tones and tunes from master harpist James “Icepick” Harman and band, who survived, as Harman describes in his hilarious original liner notes, a sonic invasion from a neighboring Van Halen video shoot which was interfering with the great “tile tone” the guys were getting from putting their amps on top of the toilets. Their solution? Duct-taping a mop and broom handle together and shoving a sofa cushion up the air vent causing the audio bleed! So, believe us when we say that this is rough ‘n’ ready blues. Earl King & Roomful of Blues – Glazed £12.99 - New Orleans blues legend Earl King hadn’t recorded for nearly a decade when he hooked up with Roomful of Blues in 1986 for this stellar effort, which we have garnished with a bonus track, Please Don’t Leave Me Here to Cry, featuring Earl and the band with special guest Curtis Salgado! Lots of great King originals here! It All Went down the Drain; Your Love Was Never There; Everybody’s Got to Cry Sometime; Love Rent; Three Can Play the Game; Iron Cupid. Zora Young - The French Connection £12.99 - The love affair between Europe and the blues began in the early 50s with the arrival of Big Bill Broonzy who performed in Limoges, France, where most of the musicians on this album come from and where it was recorded. A half-electric / half-acoustic album, The French Connection features Zora's awesome renditions of not only Chicago blues, but also gospel, jazz, deep Mississippi blues and country music... à sa manière, in her own, very special way. Tail Dragger - Live at Rooster's Lounge £12.99 - Bedrock blues from a singer who, originally inspired by Howling Wolf, has been appearing regularly in Chicago joints since the late 60s. His repertoire is largely original, peppered with humorous monologues and interspersed with songs that are classics of the 1950s Chicago blues canon. Backed by his regular Rooster’s Lounge band with a guest appearance from Jimmy Dawkins Taildragger puts on a live show that's hard to beat. Smilin' Bobby & Hidden Charms - Big Legged Woman £12.99 - Smilin’ Bobby is for many blues lovers the favorite unknown bluesman in Chicago. His guitar style is a cross between Magic Slim’s stinging leads and Magic Sam’s cool little rhythm fills while his great singing doesn’t really sound like anyone else. On his first CD on Wolf, you can finally get to hear a great hidden blues talent. Mighty Mo Rogers - Dispatches from The Moon £13.99 £12.99 Blues, but not quite as we know it. Mighty Mo relocates to a lunar address and surveys planet Earth and all its problems from outer space. Mo is writer, arranger, producer, cosmic DJ, vocalist and keyboard player but he's not entirely alone -- the band provide some funky rhythms and spiky guitar riffs. Greg Koch & Malford Milligan - Nation Sack £13.75 - Soulful Texan R&B vocalist Malford Milligan is joined by guitar master Greg Koch and the resulting concoction is a potent mix of blues, soulful R&B, and American roots music. Deeply informed by blues, blues rock, jazz, funk, country and even classical idioms, Nation Sack stretches the boundaries of traditional blues bringing a new, refreshing voice to the idiom. "Greg Koch is one of those rare guitarists that can blend v arious styles with a light hearted approach and a tremendous amount of technique. Hearing him play is inspiring.” Steve Vai Rod Piazza – Soul Monster £14.99 £13.99 - Piazza’s latest album has it all…from the aggressive George Smith instrumental ‘Sunbird’, to the deep blues recital of ‘Tell Me About It Sam’. Piazza delights as he breathes life into funky new originals and pays loving tribute to a pantheon of blues greats including Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, and Slim Harpo, as well as many more surprises along the way. “Piazza adds West coast swing and sophistication to traditional Chicago electric roots and the results are right up there with the best of Paul Butterfield or Kim Wilson.” – Blues Matters Blue Harlem - Jump Jack Jump £9.99 – These tracks neatly document Imelda May's tenure as vocalist with Blue Harlem. Pure magic! Also available: Hold the Rain £13.99 - Tuscarora National Blues £13.99. Al Cook - Pioneer & Legend - 45 Years on Stage £12.99 - Alois Kuch was born in Austria. As a young man he discovered the blues of the 20s and 30s, the pre-electric age, became Al Cook and never looked back. "Best of" collection to celebrate 45 years of performing. Al writes most of his own material but the songs sound like they were found on an old Vocalion 78.His recordings feel almost more authentic than the real thing! Also available, all £10.99 each: Barrelhouse Man, Victroia Blues, White King of Black Blues, Down In Boogie Alley, Country Blues, Birmingham Jam. Asylum Street Spankers - God's Favourite Band £12.99 - Asylum Street Spankers charge into spiritual realms with rollicking gospel, unearthly blues and heaven-bound country. Austin's iconic postmodern jug band takes a wide left turn with the world's first agnostic gospel album. Mixing raucous old traditionals with wryly humanistic originals from co-bandleader Wammo, the all-acoustic roots mob pays homage to one of America's seminal musical styles while staking out a theology of healthy skepticism . Thomas Fraser - Long Gone Lonesome Blues £7.99 - This collection of songs, drawing from the true original country & blues styles, falls hot on the heels of a resurgence in old-time country music. Thomas Fraser of Burra Isle, Shetland, passed away in 1978 aged only 50. A fisherman, a crofter - ordinary you might say - yet he left a stunning legacy: 1000s of songs recorded at home in his small croft house using a reel-to-reel recorder. Not music traditionally associated with Shetland entirely, for Thomas was an exponent of country and blues styles and his passion was the guitar. “I think the CD is great." - Mike Harding, BBC Radio 2. "There's a beautiful and informative booklet that tells the remarkable story with the help of lots of family photographs. It's truly a labour of love." - FolkRoots magazine. Thomas Fraser - You And My Old Guitar £7.99 - The second collection of songs, drawing from the true original country & blues styles. What is startling again about this collection is it's authenticity and the sheer passion poured into each track. "His guitar playing swings just like it should and the sound of the big Levin is just right and his voice is really outstanding. He performs the songs with immense energy and sounds like he's living every word." - Maggie Holland, Folk Roots magazine. Steve Hicks – The Rag Trade £13.75 – British guitarist, guitar teacher and luthier Steve Hicks, releases another CD of masterclass standard. He’s a fingerstyle guitarist who incorporates folk, classical, ragtime, pre war blues, Celtic, jazz standards and contemporary composition but no prizes for guessing which style this CD lies towards. Watermelon Slim - Escape From The Chicken Coop £12.99 - Watermelon Slim, first appeared on the music scene in the early 1970's as the only Vietnam veteran to record a full length LP during the war. Now that Slim has received a record sixteen Blues music award nominations in the last three years for his stunning albums, he is without doubt the new "King Of The Blues." John Hammond - Rough & Tough £14.50 - A well-travelled blues troubadour, the latest recording by John Hammond features him with just his guitars and harmonica revisiting songs by the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf & Blind Willie McTell, plus a couple of originals and even a cover of "Chattanooga Choo Choo". Critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and on Rough & Tough he does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica playing with expressive vocals. 18.
The Black & Tan Label Boo Boo Davis - Ain't Gotta Dime £13.99 - Mississippi-born and nowadays Saint Louis based blues singer/ harpman (and drummer, though there is none of that here) Boo Boo Davis has become a very popular draw on the European blues scene over the last decade are so, thanks to his own impeccable blues credentials, his willingness to try something a little different, and the constant promotion of Black & Tan label boss/ producer/ guitarist Jan Mittendoorp. ‘Ain’t Gotta Dime’ is Boo Boo’s sixth album for the label and find him backed solely by Jan and on drums John Gerritse, a format that has attracted some excellent reviews already. Boo Boo’s vocals often reflect the influence of Howling Wolf, and that trend continues here, underlined by his own simple but effective blues harp blowing. Stylistically this set ranges across blues-rock, southern soul, sixties rhythm & blues and down-home sounds. There’s no nonsense about this entertaining and honest release, and it is all the better for it. Wonderfully authentic material, in a fashion that is becoming something of a dying art. Buy this and keep it alive a little longer. Norman Darwen Blues Art Journal Boo Boo Davis – Name Of The Game £13.99 - All the music and extemporaneous sounds that you'll hear on this record are coming from Boo Boo's vocal chords and harmonica, John's drum kit or Jan's guitars. What started as a crazy idea after the tour with Boo Boo in October 2007 has turned out to be not too crazy at all. On the Spring Tour of 2008 they decided to leave out the bass and tour as a trio. The audiences loved it and were amazed all that sound was coming from just three pieces. John created a great drum kit (100% Radio King with real skin heads) around his 60+ years old 28 inch bass drum and Jan bought a baritone guitar and put very heavy strings on his regular guitar. These were the ingredients that produced this big authentic sound. Unlike many modern blues bands, Boo Boo and his band focus on the groove, the feel, and the basic truths found in the blues. Blues doesn't come any 'realer' then this. Billy Jones – Hometown £13.99 - Billy Jones is truly interested in advancing Black Music and making sure that it is available for future generations. On this new album he brings the Blues up to date and talks about the real problems and opportunities of "Bluez People", without falling into the stereotypes created 50 years ago. It's a modern album about modern life for people who live in the present. Slow jams, upbeat songs, love songs, message songs, acoustic and electric guitar with strong lyrics, that provide not only a description of modern life but some of the solutions for what ails yoou Doug McLeod - The Utrecht Sessions £13.99 - Over the years Doug's song writing, singing, and playing are getting more intense and personal. The new record is a perfect example of that continuing development. On most tracks it will be just Doug singing and playing guitar. The recording was done in a very old school way. Doug sat down on a chair with a vocal mic, two mics for the guitars, and a mic for his foot. We added very sparse percussion and bass on a few tracks. Like all Doug's albums since 1994, we were looking to capture the live performances. As the title suggests, the recordings were made in Utrecht (Netherlands), which has become Doug's favorite European city. Byther Smith – Throw Away The Book £13.99 - ‘Throw away the book' said Byther Smith to the band before they started. Don't play with your head, but from the heart! Smitty is one of the last blues legends out of Chicago who lived the ‘golden years' of the blues. He came to Chicago in the mid-fifties and picked up guitar licks from blues legends like his cousin JB Lenoir and Robert Jr. Lockwood. Before striking out on his own, he backed great blues artists as Otis Rush and the late Junior Wells. 40 years later, Byther's still touring. He's the real deal! Straightforward and honest blues!
