4 / Welcome

Tours of beauty Whether exploring ‘gold country’ in Yukon, glacier-fed lakes in Alberta or coastal communities in New Brunswick, Canada’s highways and byways can take you there

C

anada’s range of great touring opportunities is vast. Whether exploring by rental vehicle, tour bus, train or even plane, the country offers a host of unforgettable great escapes that will forge unforgettable memories. And never has the saying Success is a journey, not a destination rang truer than when applied to the sights, sounds, attractions and sense of space discovered on a classic Canadian journey. Get ready for landscapes that change from city skylines to snow-capped mountains to prairie wheat-fields to wildflowerfestooned countryside to wave-buffeted coastlines. The country’s well-maintained roads are easy to navigate, are often relatively empty and there’s usually a jaw-dropping view to take in around every bend in the road. In fact, the main challenge in planning a trip is choosing what stops not to include along the way. Over the following pages you will read about fabulous touring itinerary options, from British Columbia out west to Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada’s most easterly province. We hope these quintessential Canada trip suggestions will help inspire and enthuse your clients – whether they are first-time visitors or returning to discover more of what Canada has to offer. The choices are bountiful. On the east coast, roads in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick will take you to quaint fishing villages, lighthouses, coastal vistas and national parks. In Ontario, you will want to explore the family attractions in Toronto and museums and markets in Ottawa before taking to the country roads that lead you to Niagara Falls, wine-growing regions,

Algonquin Provincial Park and those iconic Canadian log cabins so characteristic of Muskoka Lakes. Across the provincial boundary line, Québec’s Francophile roots are evident in both Montréal and Québec City as well as in lesstravelled areas beyond the cities, where you will want to make a roadside pit-stop to try poutine (cheese curd with gravy). For wondrous scenery writ large on the most inspiring of natural canvasses, Alberta and British Columbia in Western Canada are headline acts. Alberta is packed with must-see features such as Banff, the Athabasca Glacier and Lake Louise, which are linked by the Icefields Parkway and framed by the snow-blanketed pinnacles of the Rocky Mountains and glacier-mint blue lakes. And then there’s Yukon and its starkly dramatic landscape of mountains, glaciers, lakes and raging rivers and historic towns that date from the Klondike Gold Rush, and the Northwest Territories, where endless adventures are in reach for those who stay at remote lodges accessed by scenic small plane flights. Saskatchewan, with its forests, lakes, beaches, trails and resident wildlife, offers a range of memorable experiences, while Manitoba, best known for its polar bears, also has road trips that take in countless outdoor activities, indigenous culture and the world’s only museum dedicated to global human rights. Whatever roads and routes your clients choose in Canada, suggest they travel at as leisurely a pace as their time allows. And remember, in Canada the journey itself will be as restorative and regenerative as the destinations experienced along the way.

Become a special

AGENT FOR CANADA Do clients ask for white-water rafting, a city foodie tour or an indigenous cultural experience? Destination Canada’s new agent training programme has all the answers

W

hether you’re looking to sell Northern Lights experiences, iconic train journeys or need to tell a client where they can walk or hike amongst flora and fauna, Destination Canada’s new Canada Specialist Agent (CSP) training programme will put you head and shoulders above your competitors. The refreshed training platform, which launched in November 2021, features modules built completely from scratch with content designed to bring Canada learning to new levels. The programme is also now accessible via a mobile app. “Training options are now more flexible and accessible – on the morning commute, during a coffee break or during dedicated time in the evening on the phone...wherever they are agents can carve out a few minutes to make their way through the modules to get their Canada qualification,” said Adam Hanmer, Travel Trade Manager, Destination Canada UK. “In the first four months since the launch of the programme we saw around 500 UK travel agents sign up to the new CSP.” Added Hanmer: “We are keen for even

more agents to benefit from it and we have worked hard to make it super accessible and getting the App up and running is a key part of that accessibility.” Canada is on or near the top of those destinations Brits want to travel to postpandemic, and the CSP is designed for agents to capitalise on this by showcasing their expertise to clinch sales. “We have built up a loyal group of Canada Specialists who consistently deliver high-value bookings to Canada. Agents who get to grips with selling Canada from coast to coast and across four seasons will enjoy healthy commissions and happy clients,” added Hanmer. The destination’s Elite programme is also still very much in operation and will be expanded, he confirms. “We are always looking to identify top selling agents to join our Elite programme, and will support them with bespoke training and exclusive FAM trips.”

What is it? Over 40 modules will eventually go live, providing agents with an interactive learning experience to learn in-depth about Canada. Key elements include audio visual components, interactive questions, shareable content and the chance to move up special tiers as agents progress through the course. Agents can learn directly from experts and work at their own pace, with 24/7 access to the platform on tablets, phones or through a browser. The ‘Retain’ section condenses product knowledge from training into a resource which can be accessed whenever needed – for example, an impromptu sales presentation with clients. Once the modules have been completed, a downloadble certificate illustrates the qualification.

The programme As agents work through the training programme and complete the modules, they will gain points towards their ultimate

goal of becoming a Gold Canada Specialist. A bar along the right of the homepage shows them exactly how they are doing and progressing.

The Foundation modules First, agents will learn all the essentials needed to sell Canada more effectively, discover its provinces and cities, its history and culture, its warm and welcoming nature – and so much more! Featuring short videos and fun quiz questions, these are the ‘building bricks’ and base knowledge of any agent’s Canada selling power! The core, or Foundation, modules are: Welcome to Canada (25 minutes) Vibrant Cities (20 minutes) Wide Open Spaces (20 minutes) History and Culture (21 minutes) Topics covered include the essentials on arrivals, transportation, time zones, accommodation options, and basic overviews of the regions and cities, from Newfoundland and Labrador in the east to Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia out west.

Experience modules With that base knowledge gained, agents can move on to ‘Experience’ modules that feature:

Food and Drink (17 minutes) Wildlife Watching (17 minutes) Adventure and Activities (15 minutes) Winter Wonderland (14 minutes) Indigenous Tourism (20 minutes) Legendary Canada (15 minutes). In these modules agents will learn about experiences as far-ranging as indigenous food trucks, Canada’s seafood fare, vintage wines and modern craft brews, wildlife bucket list activities such as whale and bear watching, plus ideas for adventure activities in the different seasons. Canada embraces winter, which is why an entire section focuses on skiing, winter sports and Northern Lights spotting. The module on Indigenous tourism details the cultural heritage of Canada’s first inhabitants. To better advise those travellers who want to see as much of Canada as they can on a single trip, agents can tap into a module for suggested regional, multi-province and cross country multidestination itineraries.

Provinces and Territories Coming soon are modules that will drill down on Canada’s provinces, cities and resorts. A sales support section will offer trade events and resources for each province. canadaspecialist.co.uk

Why would I benefit from becoming a Canada Specialist? Differentiate yourself and your agency from others by becoming a Canada expert Earn a qualification to add to your CV Increase your commission through learning how to upsell and suggest ‘add ons’ Receive priority access to Canada FAM trips, training incentives and both live and virtual events Engage with other agents who are Canada experts Gain confidence in how to sell the right trip to the right client

Feeling the call of the wild? The Yukon’s larger than life landscapes, unique native wildlife and historic Gold Rush towns make for a thrilling self-drive adventure

DAYs 1-2 WHITEHORSE The gateway for a Yukon adventure, the ‘Wilderness City’ of Whitehorse is the first taste of the Yukon for visitors arriving by air. On the banks of the Yukon River, Whitehorse is the territory’s capital and its only city and combines the historic charm of a frontier town with contemporary accommodation, a thriving arts scene and a vibrant main street. Steeped in rich Indigenous culture, the region boomed after gold was discovered in the Klondike in 1896: the find attracted over 100,000 ‘Stampeders’ to follow the challenging ‘Chilkoot Trail’ to seek their fortunes. The S.S. Klondike sternwheeler – which once carried freight along the river – and MacBride Museum of Yukon History offer a fascinating introduction to this Land of the Midnight Sun. Nearby Miles Canyon provides a first taste of Yukon’s adventure options, its 15-kilometre loop providing stunning photo-worthy stops of lakes, wilderness and the suspension bridge at the start. Canoeing, biking and hiking trails are available in the summer.

DAYs 3-4 whitehorse - skagway - HAINES 110 miles – plus five miles on a ferry. The perfect road trip destination, 80% of the Yukon remains wild, while 3,000 miles of well-maintained highway makes for low-impact exploration of this pristine wilderness. Leaving Whitehorse, travel the South Klondike Highway, which delivers awe-inspiring scenery on its journey across the White Pass to Skagway in neighbouring Alaska. After a night in the historic town, board the ferry along the Lynn Canal, where the vertiginous walls of the fjord rise to 7,000 feet above crystal-clear waters that are home to humpbacks, orcas and seals, and disembark in the wildlife haven of Haines.

DAYs 5-6 Haines - Haines Junction - kluane nP 147 miles and 155 miles. More breathtaking scenery awaits as you leave Haines and follow the ancient trail of Chilkat and Tlingit Indigenous traders to Haines Junction, stopping to look for bald eagles soaring overhead in the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve along the way. The following day, explore Kluane National Park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kluane offers spectacular mountain vistas and the chance to spot some of Canada’s wildlife species, including moose, caribou, timber wolves, lynx and the indomitable grizzly bear.

DAYs 7-8 Haines Junction - Tok - Dawson City 290 miles and 185 miles. The Yukon’s mountains and icefields feed spectacular glacial rivers and lakes and today you’ll travel north alongside the territory’s shimmering Kluane Lake before

driving the Alaska Highway to the ‘Dog Mushing Capital of Alaska’, Tok. After a night in a cosy cabin or lodge, the partly gravel Top of the World Highway (open May to mid-September) will reveal epic views across the famed Klondike gold fields, with some still being mined today. Then the George Black Ferry will carry you across the Yukon River for your short roll into iconic Dawson City.

DAYs 9-10 DAWSON CITY It might well feel like you are but, no, you’re not on a film set – you’re in Dawson City! This still-high-kicking historic Gold Rush town is characterised by its wooden boardwalks, old-style saloons and Canada’s first casino – the legendary Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall – where dancers still perform the ‘CanCan’. Visit the Jack London Museum, which tells the story of the Call of the Wild author’s Yukon adventure when he arrived here as a prospector hoping to strike gold in 1897. Hop on a Fishwheel Charter with a First Nations tour guide for a two-hour ride down the Yukon river to Moosehide, or join a gold fields tour to search for some treasures of your own.

DAYs 11-12 DAWSON CITY - WHITEHORSE 333 miles. Leaving the bright lights of Dawson behind, today you’ll drive back through the Yukon’s wonderful wilderness to Whitehorse. Fresh air and big skies abound, so be sure to stop and take in your remaining hours of freedom on the open road. Watch out for wildlife en route, and stop for a hike down to the banks of the Yukon where you might see canoers braving the white-water of the river’s famous Five Finger Rapids. Then drive on to enjoy your last night in Whitehorse, with a well-earned drink at local favourite, the Dirty Northern, on Main Street. Cheers!

Thrill of the Unexpected YELLOWKNIFE / BLACHFORD LAKE / THAIDENE NATIONAL PARK / FORT SIMPSON / NAHANNI NATIONAL PARK

DAY 1 yellowknife Welcome to the north! The Northwest Territories offer a reminder of why we travel: for the thrill of the unexpected, the joy of an epic adventure, and the desire to live in a way we aren’t used to. Upon arrival at Yellowknife Airport, your host, a member of the Dene First Nation, will take you to your host hotel to check-in and relax. The afternoon is spent at leisure, although a highly recommended option is popping in the NWT Brewing Co. for a flight of local craft beer or having dinner at Bullocks Bistro – choose their world-famous fish and chips.

DAYs 2-4 blachford lake / thaidene nene

This is a place that lives unapologetically wild and free. Travellers come here to leap outside their comfort zones, to live big and satisfy their thirst for adventure

Today, you’ll take a scenic flight to your choice of Blachford Lake Lodge or Frontier Lodge. Option 1: Arrive by seaplane to Blachford Lake Lodge, an elegant eco-lodge situated on a rocky knoll overlooking Blachford Lake. Here, two indulgent days stretch before you, with endless opportunities to explore the wilderness. In summer, take advantage of the midnight sun to canoe, StandUp Paddleboard (SUP) and hike woodland trails long into the night. Summer is also an angler’s dream, as Blachford Lake comes

alive with trophy-sized lake trout and northern pike. In late summer and autumn, the auroras (Northern Lights) take centre stage. You can see the lights from the comfort of your room or the lodge’s rooftop hot tub. Alternatively, head outdoors and build a bonfire under the shimmering sky. Accommodations are at Blachford Lake Lodge in a Private Cabin. Option 2: Take a wheel plane to the community of Lutselk’e, then a five-minute boat ride to the Indigenous-owned Frontier Lodge at the gateway of Thaidene Nene, a National Park Reserve sprawling 6.5 million acres. Here, in this global Mecca for trophy lake trout fishing, you’ll embark on guided excursions to Great Slave Lake, where you’ll spend several exhilarating hours reeling in gigantic lake trout, Arctic grayling and northern pike. When your arms get tired, turn to the lodge’s many other nature-based activities – including hiking, canoeing, wildlife viewing (including muskox, black bears and moose), and scanning the skies for the northern lights. Accommodations are at Frontier Lodge in a Private Cabin. (Accommodations available starting 2023)

DAY 5 nahanni national park Today, you’ll head back to Yellowknife Airport for a scenic flight to Fort Simpson, the gateway to Nahanni National Park. The 30,000 sq km park was the world’s first UNESCO Heritage Site and home to the Dehcho First Nation since time immemorial. The park only receives around 1,000 visitors per year – that’s less than what Banff National Park gets in a single day. Spend time exploring the shores of the mighty Mackenzie River. Accommodations are at Lady Slipper Lodge in the best available room.

Top tip: Keep your camera close by! You never know when wildlife will be just around the corner in the NWT.

FORT SIMPSON TEEPEE

DAY 6 nahanni national park Today, you’ll transfer to the local seaplane base for your first attempt to fly into magical Nahanni National Park. If the journey is successful, you’ll soar through vast canyons, look out for wildlife that includes grizzly bears, black bears, timber wolves, moose, minks, beavers, lynx, otters, foxes, wood bison, and snowshoe hares. You will see thundering Virginia Falls – with a total drop of 96 metres, it is about twice the height of Niagara Falls – then land and take a short hike to see the falls up close. In the evening, take part in a traditional land and fire feeding ceremony with a Dene Elder, complete with stew and bannock (a flat, unsweetened cake made with oatmeal or barley flour) drumming and stories of the Dene way of life. Accommodations are at Lady Slipper Lodge in the best available room.

DAY 7 fort providence - yellowknife Today, if required you’ll have another attempt at visiting Nahanni National Park, otherwise feel free to roam Fort Simpson. Then fly to Fort Providence, situated to the west of Great Slave Lake. From here, your guide will drive you along the lake towards Yellowknife, where bison are known to wander with their herd. The rest of the evening is yours to enjoy. Accommodations are at The Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife, in a Deluxe King Room.

Along the way the scenery includes fjord-like waters and mountains covered with forests and glaciated peaks. At Langdale, disembark the ferry and drive past quiet fishing villages. Spend the next day exploring Canada’s Pacific Coast, where outdoor adventures include kayaking. It’s a rewarding way of seeing the fjord-like Sechelt Inlet – though the Skookumchuck Narrows’ rapids are best left to experienced paddlers.
