ABOUT
LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS BMLA is committed to long-term relationships with the public agencies with whom we partner. We grow and nurture enduring alliances with cities and agencies that result in a better appreciation of their needs, enabling us to provide meaningful solutions specific to those needs. Design solutions are not one-size-fits-all, as many factors influence planning and design including demographics, budget, population, and accessibility to open space. By working with a city for years, or in some cases decades, BMLA develops an understanding of their practices, obstacles, character and the spirit of their citizens. BMLA is able to better assist a city to address the specific needs of their citizens with that established relationship.

WORK LMD SLOPE ANALYSIS & MAPPING // CORONA, CA With the assistance of city staff, BMLA prepared mapping field research for the long term improvement of the existing LMD areas in the Sierra Del Oro Community. Utilizing the city’s GIS maps for the community, BMLA mapped the landscape areas under consideration and crafted a schema for the recordation of the problem areas ranked in accordance with the observed and reported maintenance problems. The project was reviewed in the field based on the schema; a photographic record was taken for future analysis and discussion. Each slope and parkway was assigned a catalog number for future analysis as to action and cost based on the on the field observations. Depending on the site’s accessibility, critical state of condition, and potential cost of action, we established values to identify priorities for action. A priority matrix was prepared that assigned response directives based on the critical nature of the proposed improvement or repair. We developed standard budget values for the proposed mitigation actions. The final deliverable was a process manual for making critical decisions.

WORK LOS FLORES RANCH TRAILS // SANTA MARIA, CA BMLA was engaged by the City of Santa Maria to prepare a comprehensive Open Space master plan for an 1,800-acre park site along the 101 highway south of the City. BMLA worked with the City to develop the overall mapping plan and site specific designs for the space, including passive recreation and hiking trails, a parking lot, an equestrian staging area, a maintenance area and a visitor’s docent center. Using onsite assessment and GIS technology, BMLA evaluated the existing recreation and landscape and made recommendations for future opportunities. BMLA also provided the graphics for the pamphlet used for distribution to visitors which include a trail map, park rules, and donor information. Though the site allows for very limited low impact uses for the time being, it was important for City leadership to have a visioning document that received public input in the form of workshops and surveys. The result of which was a master plan that created a process by which trails would be operated, maintained and future trails would be built.
