ABOUT

LONG TERM RELATIONSHIPS BMLA commits to a long-term relationship with the public agencies with whom we partner. We grow and nurture enduring alliances with cities and agencies that result in a better appreciation of their needs, enabling us to provide meaningful solutions specific to those needs. Design solutions are not one-size-fits-all, as many factors influence planning and design including demographics, budget, population, and accessibility to open space. By working with a city for years, or in some cases decades, BMLA develops an understanding of their practices, obstacles, character and spirit of their citizens. BMLA is able to better assist a city to address the specific needs of their citizens with that established relationship.

WORK LOS FLORES RANCH TRAILS // SANTA MARIA, CA BMLA was engaged by the City of Santa Maria to prepare a comprehensive Open Space master plan for an 1,800-acre park site along the 101 highway south of the City. BMLA worked with the City to develop the overall mapping plan and site specific designs for the space, including passive recreation and hiking trails, a parking lot, an equestrian staging area, a maintenance area and a visitor’s docent center. Using onsite assessment and GIS technology, BMLA evaluated the existing recreation and landscape and made recommendations for future opportunities. BMLA also provided the graphics for the pamphlet used for distribution to visitors which include a trail map, park rules, and donor information. Though the site allows for very limited low impact uses for the time being, it was important for City leadership to have a visioning document that received public input in the form of workshops and surveys. The result of which was a master plan that created a process by which trails would be operated, maintained and future trails would be built.

WORK BUENA VISTA PARK // SANTA MARIA, CA The City of Santa Maria hired BMLA to prepare design plans for the renovation of a 100-year old park that had seen many upgrades and improvements over the years. This renovation program included a community outreach effort and workshops with the department stakeholders such as public works and police. The community outreach was held in the park so that the community could come out and participate. This was helpful as many of the attendees were very low income residents and did not have personal transportation available. We provided Spanish speakers to facilitate open communication and the sharing of ideas and opinions. We took the feedback in the form of preferences and crafted several design alternatives. The final design included drought-tolerant gardens, trees, grassy play areas, basketball courts, walkways, a grand entrance, and a space for community events.
