Pre-Construction

Once the contractor receives the planting theme and has assessed the existing conditions of the site - the contractor will submit a red line drawing to the city and provide as-builts for approval by the city before construction. This document will show the city the contractor has taken into account all utilities, parkway widths, plant palette, and any other site specific conditions that may affect the demolition, irrigation, or planting methodologies. This drawing shall show the zone for each valve with gpm not to exceed the maximum gpm of the existing valve. Should the valve exceed maximum GPM - the contractor shall coordinate with the city on adding a valve based on availability of stations from the controller. Each emitter is 4 GPH (0.067 GPM) and shall be installed per the Irrigation Methodologies section of this document (refer to page 9). Contractors should be aware of the maxiumum run and elevation change permitted by this drip methodology - taking this into account based on the available static water pressure. A detailed planting schedule shall be included in this drawing reflecting the City of Glendora selected planting theme and quantities based upon lengths and widths of the selected parkways. The planting layouts in this document are diagrammatic, and the contractor should always take into consideration the existing utilities, trees, and conditions of the existing site when creating this plant schedule. Some areas may require hardscape elements in high pedestrian traffic areas - the City of Glendora shall determine these quantities and layout.

Demolition Methodology

I. Before Demolition is Conducted The contractor shall obtain a construction permit from the City of Glendora prior to construction.

All survey monuments shall be protected and perpetuated in place, any disturbed or covered monuments shall be reset by a qualified registered civil engineer or a licensed land surveyor at the direction of the city engineer. It shall be the contractor’s responsibility to verify the location of all utilities or structures above or below ground, shown or not shown, on the plans including but not limited to: lighting, electrical wiring, catch basins/drains, drain pipes and sleeves. The contractor will be held responsible for all damage to any utilities or structures caused by his operation. The contractor is to repair and or replace damage to existing facilities not scheduled for removal to the satisfaction of the city representative. The contractor is to protect and verify with a magnetic detector in field the location of all existing electrical wires and conduit.

II. City Recommended Turf Removal Methodologies: Removal of cool-season turf (tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, bentgrass, etc):

If there is no warm season turf grass mixed in to the turf, the contractor is to dig out the turf by hand or utilize sod cutters to remove all turf.

Removal of warm-season turf (bermudagrass, St. Augustine, buffalo grass, zoysiagrass, etc): This type of turf is more difficult to remove. Warm-season turf spread laterally and can have very deep roots. If you attempt to remove it with the same method as cool-season turf, it will grow back. You need to kill it with an herbicide before removing it. One of the most common herbicides used to kill warm-season turf is Glyphosate (Roundup and others). It kills plants by translocating throughout both roots and shoots of the plant. For glyphosate to be most effective it must be applied to grass that is vigorously growing and

City of Glendora Turf Removal Handbook not drought-stressed. The more leaf surface area, the better absorption of the herbicide. Therefore, do not mow the grass for two to three weeks before treating. The most effective time of the year to apply glyphosate is during late summer when the plant is storing food in the roots. The least effective time of year is winter when temperatures are low and the grass is dormant. Contactor to follow label instructions and wait 7 days after applying glyphosate to remove the grass.

All turf areas shall be excavated to a depth of six inches and screened or raked completely to remove rocks and non-organic materials of one inch in diameter and greater. All turf, rocks and non-organic material collected as a part of the screening and raking process shall be disposed of off-site in a legal manner

Hardscape Installation:

In areas where there is high foot traffic, this document outlines the methodologies to allow for crossing parkways without the damage of plant material. Stabilized decomposed granite will be installed between planters that surround the existing street trees. The borders between planter and decomposed granite shall be separated with plastic header board (refer to detail in appendix iv). In these high traffic instances the contractor shall install these hardscape elements before installation of plant material.

City of Glendora Turf Removal Handbook

Irrigation Methodologies: I. Irrigation Equipment:

All standard non-drip valves shall be removed and replaced with one of the following Rain Bird drip irrigation valves kits and Low Volume Emitters with flex risers (dependent upon the GPM requirement) utilizing existing wires and stations to the respective controller:

For 0.2 to 5 gpm For 3-15 gpm For 3-20 gpm For 15-40 gpm Low Volume Emitters

Rain Bird XCZ-LF-100-PRF Rain Bird XCZ-100-PRF Rain Bird XCZ-100-PRB-COM (XCZ-100-PRBR for reclaimed) Rain Bird XCZ-150-PRB-COM Rain Bird Xeribug XB-05

Preserve valves where possible and cap and abandon any equipment that will not impede the new retrofitted irrigation system or the plant material being installed; otherwise clear any and all irrigation equipment unable to be utilized for the new system - return functioning valves to the city. Any valves that are replaced shall utilize existing wiring and stations with the respective controller.

II. Installation Methodology: To address maintenance issues that arise with typical polytube drip irrigation - planted areas will

be utilizing point-to-point drip emitters in parkways and medians (refer to the “Irrigation Layouts section for diagrammatic layouts of point-to-point irrigation throughout different parkways). Trees shall be irrigated on separate valves than shrubs/ground covers. Emitters are to be Raid Bird Xeribug XB-05 drip emitters. No excess water shall be allowed on the street or sidewalk, and contractor is to use teflon tape on all threaded fittings except on marlex fittings.

III.

Tree Irrigation

Existing street trees shall be irrigated on a separate valve as shrub/ground covers. Each street tree shall receive two emitters as shown on diagrammatic irrigation layouts.

Planting Methodologies:

I. Installation Actual planting shall be performed during those periods when weather and soil conditions

are suitable and in accordance with locally accepted practice, as approved by the city or the city’s representative. Only as many plants as can be planted and watered on that same day shall be distributed in a planting area. Containers shall be opened and plants shall be removed in such a manner that the ball of earth surrounding the roots is not broken and they shall be planted and watered as herein specified immediately after removal from the containers.

II. Planting Trees and Shrubs Excavation for planting shall include the stripping and stacking of all acceptable topsoil

encountered within the areas to be excavated for trenches, tree holes, plant pits, and planting beds. Excess soil generated from the planting holes shall not be used as back fill or in establishing the final grades. Protect all areas from excessive compaction when trucking plants or other materials. Center plant in pit or trench and face fullest growth into prevailing wind. Set plant plumb and hold rigidly in position until soil has been tamped firmly around ball or roots - 8 parts on site topsoil - 2 parts organic amendment per soils report. All plants which settle deeper than specified above shall be raised to the correct level. After the plant has been placed, additional back fill shall be added to the hole to cover approximately onehalf of the height of the root ball. At this stage, water shall be added to the top of the partly filled hole to thoroughly saturate the root ball and adjacent soil. Can Removal: Cut cans on two sides with an acceptable can cutter. Do not injure root ball. Do not cut cans with spade or axe. Carefully remove plants without injury or damage to root ball. After removing plant, superficially cut edge-roots with knife on three sides. Contractor is to abide by any guidelines or standards regarding distances from utilities, signage, and sight triangles. As these distances and requirements will change depending upon the site - the contractor is to ensure that all these distances take precedent over the diagrammatic planting layouts mentioned in this handbook. Dig planting holes to accommodate root balls per these specifications and hand place plants which are in containers less than one gallon in size. Hand back fill and hand tamp leaving a slight depression around the bases of plants. After the water has completely drained, quantity of planting tablets shall be:1 gallon container - one tablet, 5 gallon container - three tablets, 15 gallon container - six tablets. The remainder of the hole shall then be back filled. Planting tablets shall be set with each plant on the top of the root ball while the plants are still in their containers so the required number of tablets to be used in each hole can be easily verified. After back filling, an earthen basin shall be constructed around each plant. Each basin shall be a depth sufficient to hold at least two inches of water. Basins shall be of a size suitable for the individual plant. In no case shall the basin for a fifteen-gallon plant be less than four feet in diameter, five gallon plant less than three feet in diameter and one gallon plant less than two feet in diameter. The basins shall be constructed of amended back fill materials.
