USING THIS DOCUMENT
The purpose of this document is to give guidance to North San Jose’s Area Policy. The goal is to create a distinguishing character for public spaces and to promote cohesive growth in the incorporated area. To that end, this document sets forth a “kit of parts” to the developer, designer, or planner, that can be applied toward site specific public development. This document intends to make recommendations for product selection in the following areas:
As stated, the Kit of Parts is broken down into sections of products. On the Table of Contents page you will find these sections listed along with a page by page breakdown of the individual products within each section.

It is recognized that since each site is unique and is host to its own set of parameters and nuances that it would be an impossibility to predict all of the possible public work scenarios that will arise within the North San Jose Policy Area. Additionally, products and technologies are continually being innovated and what is the best item for a given situation today may not be in a year from now. With that in mind, it is encouraged to use this document as a guideline for design solutions and not a catalogue for product selection. All the best efforts are made in this document to direct the user to manufacturers and product lines that fit the over arching theme of the policy area, but product numbers and specifics have been omitted to allow for the evolution of the product line. If it is desirable to use a product that is not listed in this document., submit it to the city for approval.

The categories are coded by color and symbol so that as you search specific products you will be able to identify the category of use it is intended for. On in those pages you will find several bench options, one will be marked with the symbol for Urban Plazas.

The Creek Side Theme for The North San JoséSite Policy Area / Benches Amenities For the purposes of this document, the North San José Policy Area will be referred to by its theme designation: “Creek Side”. This community is uniquely located between two important water courses in the city: the Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek. These play a critical role in the biodiversity of the area and provide an appropriate back drop for the changing community of San José. The design pillars of the Creek Side theme are material, color texture and symbolism. Each of these supports is based on the natural environment of the Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek. The first foundation is the use of stone and stone like material throughout the construction of the buildings, monuments, walls, pergolas and site furnishings. The esthetic will match that of a quarried stone with geometric patterned reminiscent of the early 20th century craftsmen style. The use of these materials within this theme is characterized by features such as: • Gateway entries with capped stone pillars • Stone paving • Stone walls • Dry, cobbled creeks • Imprinted concrete paving with natural colors • Play lots incorporating native wildlife structures

Site Amenities / Benches Materials Detailed stonework will be a defining characteristic of North San JosÊ parks as used in walls, paving and entryways. The colors used in the parks shall be within the earth tone color palette with exceptions made for accent or safety purposes. The children’s play areas may have a color selection that is unique for the purposes of emulating natural flora and fauna. Park structures, way finding and monument signs will include stone accents.

Where possible the man made paved and wall systems shall incorporate texture to reinforce the natural creek environment. Sand, gravel, stone and impressions such as flora and fauna imprints will be incorporated as appropriate. Natural stone may also be used as accents as accents in and near dry creeks. The use of these materials will connect with the natural feel of the theme in a modern application to blend with existing architecture. Amenities Site amenities such as benches, tables, trash receptacles and the like will be selected based on the use of natural motifs such as shape, color, finish and textures. Where suitable stone finishes will be incorporated and the use of recycled material will be preferred.

Tot lots will create a stylized riparian environment for children to engage in a variety types of play. Animal footprints lead children down imprinted concrete paths, experiencing the plant and animal

Site Amenities / Benches motifs that bring elements of creek habitat into the parks. Native wildlife, logs and boulders become the inspiration for climbing structures. Children can weave through the legs of a giant Great Blue Heron, or climb on a California Tiger Salamander as they search for food in the ‘river’ and dart amongst park plantings. Where appropriate sports facilities will be finished to match the natural creek theme. The use of bright colors will be avoided unless required for safety purposes.
Imprinted concrete
The creek side theme will be strengthened in the selection of light fixtures. The colors, shapes and technology will make a statement to the respect that the city is committed to the natural environment. Fixtures such as LED lights will be used to reduce the impact on the environment. The fixtures will be earth tone colors and a high level of recycled material content. Cast concrete boulders
Plant Material Plantings of drought tolerant and native vegetation will be used to create a landscape that builds a visual connection to the riparian habitat coursing through the city. Plants that can tolerate recycled water will be prioritized, to take advantage of opportunities to use this alternative water source. The plantings may be formal or informal to coordinate with individual site programming and architecture, in both cases projecting a slice of nearby nature into newly developed parks. Dry creek

Hardscape / Pervious Asphalt
Pervious pavement reduces stormwater runoff flow rate and volume, recharges groundwater and maintains stream base flows. The subgrade also filters pollutants. Pervious pavement is less prone to cracking or buckling from freezing and thawing. Studies indicate it requires less frequent repair and patching than conventional paving. In some cases, pervious pavement may reduce or eliminate the need for an underground storm drain system or a curb and gutter system. Pervious pavement is an effective method of managing stormwater runoff without limiting use of the space. p40

Approximately 80% of the recycled scrap mix originates from post-consumer sources such as shredded automobiles, obsolete household appliances and other similar consumer products. The remaining 20% originates from pre-consumer sources such as steel plant returns and manufacturing residues. p58

Wayfinding / Monument Signs
Monument signs will be built using locally sourced stone, concrete and steel. Local stone will create a connection with the local landscape and reduce resource use for transportation of materials.
