Project Narrative When the throngs of 49ers beset California in search of gold, the challenges in gold mining forced many to find alternative work. A few found abandoned orchards, started by early Spanish settlers, and revived them into some of the earliest commercial orchards in the State. The history of fruit production in California has paralleled the growth of cities including Corona. By creating a community orchard, Corona provides a place for children and adults to learn about and participate in that history, while supplying a food source and a place for recreation.

The Corona Community Orchard will fulfill three goals: reduce resource consumption, change the space from passive to productive, and provide opportunities for education and community involvement.

The 7.8 acre site is currently an underused open space within a residential community. Because it does not provide specific recreation opportunities and the maintenance and irrigation costs are significant, converting it to an orchard will provide an enhanced resource for the community.

Additionally, the quantity of water required for irrigation will be considerably less even at the beginning of the project.

As the trees become established they will be more resilient to drought and require less water. A rainwater harvesting system will collect and store winter rains for use in the dry season, further reducing the need for supplemental irrigation.

Air quality will improve and gasoline consumption will go down by eliminating weekly mowing. These changes will reduce resource use, and ensure that those resources that are used contribute to an enhanced cultural landscape that provides education, food and recreation while reducing the need for natural resources.
