Animals of Temescal Wash and Collier Marsh
Plants of Temescal Wash and Collier Marsh Southern Cottonwood-Willow Riparian Forest Southern Cottonwood Willow Riparian Forest is characterized by a tall, multilayered, open, canopy. The dominant species are broad-leafed and winterdeciduous-Fremont cottonwood (Populus fremontii fremontii), black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa), and several tree willows (Salix spp.). Found on sub-irrigated and frequently deposited sediments, leading to even-aged stands.
Willow-Mulefat Scrub
Mulefat scrub occurs mainly within intermittently flooded stream courses in southern California. The vegetation is characterized by a low diversity assemblage of riparian shrubs dominatede by mule fat (Baccharis salicifolia) and shrubby willows (2 to 4 meters tall). In southern California it is found in riparian areas where the water supply is insufficient to support a larger statured and more diverse riparian community. Mulefat scrub mixes with fresh water marsh and southern willow scrub in more mesic areas and with upland scrub and non-native grassland communities in drier portions of drainages. Characteristic species are mulefat, narrow-leaved willow and arroyo willow.
Least Bell‛s vireo (Vireo bellii pusillus) is the flagship sensitive species for Temescal Wash. It is state and federally listed as an endangered species. It lives in cotton-willow forest, dry washes with willow thickets at the edges, oak woodland and scrubby thickets. The birds prefer vegetation with dense, stratified canopy for nesting such as mule fat and willows 2-10 feet tall along water or along dry parts of intermittent streams. It is usually present in the wash area from the end of March or early April through the end of September, wintering in Mexico (Riverside County, 2003).
Freshwater Marsh
Freshwater marshes occur in ponds and slow moving streams. Like salt water marshes, they are vegetated mostly with herbaceous plants, predominantly cattails, and species of sedges, and rushes. Freshwater marshes have mineral soils that are less fertile than those of salt marshes, and exhibit a greater variety of plant species than do salt marshes. Plants include rushes, sedges, cattails and willows.

Urban Water Quality Most people believe that the largest source of water pollution in urban areas comes from specific sources such as factories and sewage treatment plants. In fact the largest source of water pollution comes from city streets, neighborhoods, construction sites, and parking lots. This type of pollution is sometimes called “non-point source” pollution.

Basketry, tukmalum, is one of the Pechanga tribe's most cherished skills. The magnificent quality of all Luiseño basketry, with exceedingly tight weaves and beautiful textural designs, is renowned not only in the Southern California Tribal community, but worldwide.

What can you do to help?
* Keep litter, pet wastes, leaves, and debris out of street gutters and storm drains--these outlets drain directly to lake, streams, rivers, and wetlands. * Apply lawn and garden chemicals sparingly and according to directions. * Dispose of used oil, antifreeze, paints, and other household chemicals properly, not in storm sewers or drains. If your community does not already have a program for collecting household hazardous wastes, ask your local government to establish one. * Clean up spilled brake fluid, oil, grease, and antifreeze. Do not hose them into the street where they can eventually reach local streams and lakes. * Control soil erosion on your property by planting ground cover and stabilizing erosion-prone areas. * Encourage local government officials to develop construction erosion/sediment control ordinances in your community. * Have your septic system inspected and pumped, at a minimum, every 3-5 years so that it operates properly. * Purchase household detergents and cleaners that are low in phosphorous to reduce the amount of nutrients discharged into our lakes, streams and coastal waters. http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/urbanquality.html

The purple-black berries are high in Vitamin C and are used in pies, jams, jellies, and wine. Elderberry wine or tea is excellent for fighting ailments from the common cold to the flu. Lake Elsinore Flooding and Management
Watershed Connections What is a Watershed? A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place. John Wesley Powell, scientist geographer, put it best when he said that a watershed is: "that area of land, a bounded hydrologic system, within which all living things are inextricably linked by their common water course and where, as humans settled, simple logic demanded that they become part of a community."
Lake Elsinore has been an important natural feature in the area for many years. Known as the “Playground of the Southwest”, recreation has centered around the lake since the early 1900‛s. The lake is also the only natural lake in the watershed, collecting downstream flows and flooding in years of high precipitation.
Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes. They cross county, state, and national boundaries. In the continental US, there are 2,110 watersheds; including Hawaii Alaska, and Puerto Rico, there are 2,267 watersheds. http://www.epa.gov/owow/watershed/whatis.html
Santa Ana River Watershed
The Santa Ana River watershed is located in southern California, south and east of the city of Los Angeles. The watershed includes much of Orange County, the northwestern corner of Riverside County, the southwestern corner of San Bernardino County, and a small portion of Los Angeles County. The watershed is approximately 2,800 square miles in area.
Temescal Wash and adjacent Collier March and Gunnerson Pond, are downstream recipients of storm event overflows from Lake Elsinore. Temescal Wash is engineered for flood protection with reinforced concrete walls. An adjacent wash is smaller and soft bottomed, providing surface water to Collier Marsh. The concrete channel ends at Riverside Drive, creating a small pool that empties into the marsh. The smaller wash continues through the marsh and beyond, joining Lee Lake downstream and eventually emptying into the Santa Ana River and the Pacific Ocean. Temescal Wash is an important component to Lake Elsinore flood control as its only downstream outlet.
