Together with the designer Gregor Wöckel and the company Unykat, a sustainable book-affine design was realised. As „Zweimalschön“, 20 Viennese hotel rooms on the mountain experience a resurrection. The ergonomic plug-and-play reading bed can be moved freely in the room and is optimised for the reading voice with an acoustic device. Finding yourself The Lesehotel in the Salzkammergut has set itself the task of helping guests find themselves in peace and quiet.

The silence on the mountain, the darkness at night, which makes it possible to see the starry splendour of the Milky Way, are intensified by the sensitive design. The guests are sovereign and decide situationally: starting with the position of the plug&play reading bed in the room, the selection of books in the room and the freely chosen level of service.

At the Lesehotel, guests have absolute freedom to choose how they would like to organise their stay. Breakfast is available all day, even in the room. In the guest kitchen, guests can cook together or book a chef to cook with them - surrounded by more cookery books than the guests can read! Or you can let yourself be pampered all around - just as it feels good at the moment. The house and garden belong to the guests as if they were visiting friends.

A PLACE OF INSPIRATION LESEHOTEL When your gaze is captivated by Lake Hallstatt and the Dachstein glacier, all you want to do is sit and look. The silence up on the mountain below the summit is exactly what guests of the Lesehotel crave on a short holiday for rest and relaxation. The increasing complexity of the network society makes people experience a deep need for relaxation and inner peace. It is precisely this longing that the Lesehotel meets as a cross-industry innovation project when it connects publishers with readers.

Dr. Silke Seemann, economist and also operator of the Hallstatt Hideaway (see page 53), researches social change and asks quite pragmatically about the effect on tourism to keep surprising her guests with new products: „People need places of retreat that simultaneously take them out of everyday life and lead them into inner peace. The Lesehotel will be a place of retreat, encounter and exchange.

As well the Lesehotel offers the opportunity to exchange ideas with other guests about what they have read and to inspire each other. „The book bar is equipped with books, reading glasses, water bottle, writing utensils, notebook and reading light individually for each guest. It can be carried around the house, as a very private side table. It serves as an active means of communication: if a book is placed on the reading light at arm‘s length, it is an invitation: I would like to talk about this book!

Anyone who feels like it, can take the book, read it and then offer to talk. If the book holder is in a low position, it means: I want to read in peace.“ Read and enjoy The Berghof, which dates back to the 1970s, has been restored to its former glory. A conscious decision was made not to build a new building. Here, life can be reflected and dreams can be made! Both the silence of the forest and the darkness of the night with the radiance of the stars make it easy to detach oneself from everyday life and turn to that which is waiting to be discovered as potential in everyone.

Reading enthusiasts look forward to the vertical library - over four floors, the central staircase circles a library of classics, bestsellers and the books that have been displaced by the novelties in the publishing rooms. THE POWER OF THE REGION The landscape flickers past rapidly before the train starts to slow down with a groan, as if it is reluctant to reduce its speed. We’ve arrived at the station in Lienz, and we grab our seven bags and step out onto the platform. A train journey like this has its advantages. “We feel indebted to the power of the region and to sustainability,” says Martha Schultz in response to the question as to why it was important to orient their corporate philosophy towards sustainability, regionality and nature-inspired architecture from the very beginning. The multi-award-winning, car-free mountain resort at the gateway to the Hohe Tauern National Park is home to the hotel,

Cheerful marmots and invigorating mountain air Even during the construction of the resort, 85% of the total investment was spent within a 50-kilometre radius and invested in local materials. Furthermore, all of the timber buildings were built using wood from local

forests, and the roofs of the chalets were planted with regional species, meaning the structures merge into the forest and can barely be seen from Kals. The view to the outside shows that wherever nature remains untouched, you’ll be able to see animals. During a guided hike with a ranger in the Hohe Tauern National Park, we encounter cheerful marmots, discover chamois and even spot a golden eagle.

ALL IN ONE PLACE Here we’re just a step away from the largest ski area in East Tyrol and will be able to make the most of the 15 cable cars and lifts at up to 2,426 metres above sea level. A total of 42 kilometres of pistes are just waiting to be discovered, and no matter whether you’re a pro or a newbie, a snowboarder or a freerider, there is guaranteed to be a slope for everyone. And to top it all off, snow is a given here until spring.

We found everything straightforward at the superior four-star resort, and not just because of the direct access to the pistes and the fact you can ski in, ski out. We got the equipment for our sporting adventure right here at the hotel, for both adults and children, and were even able to book the little ones into ski school at the same time. And because the youngsters just couldn’t wait to get started, we had a go on the magic carpet behind the hotel, where

the professionals of the future captivated us as they took their first unsteady turns out on the snow with huge grins on their faces. Tobogganing, cross-country skiing, ski tours, winter hiking: at the Gradonna Mountain Resort there is so much on offer. If the kids don’t want to go out with you, leave them to let off steam at the kids club: when we pick them up they tell us all about their trips to the enchanted forest, the action-packed adventures in nature and all the new friends they’ve made in the play area.

EXCLUSIVE RELAXATION It’s Friday and travelling is hungry work, so after a warm greeting at the reception of the ElisabethHotel in Mayrhofen, we tuck in straight away to a fortifying lunchtime snack. We’re served a cold meal prepared using regional ingredients, several of which are produced by the hotel itself, and soup. We taste our way through bacon and cheese from the local area, as well as delicious homemade cake and strudel. Back in reception, we’d already glanced over to the Club, which is furnished with luxurious leather sofas from Bielefelder Werkstätten

and Florentine glass light fittings by Banci, just as we had been told. We’ll be sure to pay it another visit during the weekend.

But right now we don’t feel like having a rest, so we hop onto some electric bikes instead and head off on a bike tour – the staff at reception prepared some great recommendations for us. We decide to set off for the Speichersee in the wild and romantic Stilluptal, a valley that’s located in the Zillertal Alps Nature Park, and ride until we reach the Stillupspeicher reservoir.

When we arrive back at the ElisabethHotel later on, we round off our active afternoon with a dip in the basalt pool. The perfect end to this first day is a candle-lit dinner in one of the cosy restaurant lounges. While we’re eating in the Herzerlstube (Heart Lounge), we have plenty of time to marvel at the antique silver heart-shaped ornaments dating from a bygone era that are displayed on the walls. Soothing piano music is the ideal accompaniment to our evening, and it’s still tinkling away in our ears when we get into bed.

Tired legs and refreshing drinks On Saturday morning, it’s all about getting up that mountain! We grab our rucksacks and

start the ascent to the Olpererhütte. Situated at 2,389 metres above sea level, the hut looks out over the Schlegeisspeicher body of water in the Zillertal Alps and makes all the physical exertion worthwhile. We order Kaiserschmarren (chopped up sweet pancakes) and enjoy the view of the Zillertal 3000 ski area. Upon our return to the ElisabethHotel, we can feel that our calves are worn out so we decide to bring them back to life with a massage in the Elisense Treatment Area. The interesting architecture of the Elisense spa provides ample space and tranquillity with saunas, steam baths and the basalt pool, while the water beds in the quiet room allow you to float away into a dream world. We choose to put our feet up in the Minotti Relax

Afterwards, we’re ready for a drink and decide to watch evening fall while sipping cocktails on the hotel terrace.

Romantic garden and distillery We also watched evening become night the day before, so we order breakfast in bed on Sunday morning. Our 48 hours are almost up, but we decide to make the most of the

time we have left. For us, that means going for a walk around the romantic garden and taking deep breaths of the lovely clean air.

It’s a tough place to leave, so we soften the blow by visiting the Zillertal Bier brewery and pick up some souvenirs to take home. At least that way we’ll still be able to relive a bit of our fabulous stay at the ElisabethHotel in Mayrhofen.

CITIUS, ALTIUS, FORTIUS Today’s schedule includes hiking the three lakes. But before that, breakfast – I don’t recommend climbing mountains on an empty stomach. I opt for the Max & Jack, warm porridge with banana, cinnamon and maple syrup, plus an espresso and herbal tea, but I also can’t resist tucking into the other delights from the breakfast buffet. My rucksack for the trip is already packed and after a relaxed breakfast in the hotel bistro – which, by the way, boasts incredible design and furnishings from BoConcept – it’s time to head off. The starting point for this hike is the championship indoor tennis hall in Seefeld (I make a mental note not to risk a game of tennis during this holiday), from which the

path leads across the Moserer Mahder meadows and slightly uphill towards Mosern.

Embracing the spirit of the Olympic motto “faster, higher, stronger” (no, it’s not “it’s the taking part that counts”), there are plenty of other sporting activities on offer in the Seefeld Olympic region besides long hikes.

Depending on your level of enthusiasm and ability, you can choose from mountain bike tours, stand up paddleboarding on the Wildsee, climbing, rafting and paragliding, as well as the less strenuous carriage rides and walking with alpacas. The benefits of a place like Seefeld are clear for all to see in the sheer number of options available.

Walking out of dasMAX, you’ll find yourself right in the pedestrian zone with its many restaurants, cafes and bars, so you’ll be spoilt for choice for dinner and drinks.

Traditional and authentic Italian cuisine can be enjoyed at the brand new restaurant “La Trattoria“, which fortunately is only a short walk away from dasMAX. After circling the Moserersee, the path follows the Pirschsteig trail in the direction of the Lottensee and continues until you finally reach the Wildmoossee and the Wildmoosalm. There you can say hello to the cows and stop for a bite to eat at one of the rustic huts.

After a hike, there’s nothing better than sitting comfortably and squinting into the sun.

Chilling on the rooftop So back at dasMAX, the quickest way to get to the rooftop wellness area is via the lift – then you can rest your weary legs in the sauna. In the spa, I chill out on a lounger and while away the time. The rooftop affords visitors a unique 360-degree view of the dasMAX mountain landscape that surrounds Seefeld, and there’s no doubt that it’ll take

Going for a dip The new highlight for summer at the Bergland Design and Wellness Hotel Sölden is the huge outdoor pool, the size of which will delight even the keenest of swimmers. It even has its own lift so you can get from the hotel’s Sky SPA directly to the garden, where you can dive into the refreshing water and enjoy the tranquillity and the view. Getting out of the pool after an early morning dip is a feeling like no other – you can sense every muscle in your body and everything feels wonderfully fresh and revitalised. After that you can treat yourself to a couple of minutes

in the hot tub followed by a hearty breakfast at the plentiful buffet. The outdoor pool faces south east, meaning you can soak up the sun on the surrounding decking from early morning until late in the afternoon.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a little tired after an active day – after all, you’re on holiday in a hotel with plenty of space for relaxing, especially in the Sky SPA, which has now been extended to span over 2,200 square metres.

200. This number represents the maximum distance items such as food and cosmetics products are allowed to travel – 200 kilometres (as the crow flies). That’s something like the distance from Vienna to Budapest – or even from Sölden to Venice. “We wanted to further strengthen our collaboration with regional suppliers from the surrounding area to help create a greener future: basically, green makes greener,” explains hotel owner Sigi Grüner, who not only runs the Bergland with his family but also breeds sheep on the site.

In the pastures around the hotel, summer will see an average of 25 ewes and 40 to 50 lambs grazing. It also explains the name of the hotel’s own gourmet restaurant: the aptly named black sheep has long placed great emphasis on local produce, and what could be more local than lamb you’ve bred yourself? Here, regional is synonymous with flavour and authenticity – which you won’t only find in the gourmet restaurant but also from the moment the day begins with breakfast.

FROM RESTAURANT TO BAR, TO SPA In keeping with the Regional 200 initiative and produce from the hotel’s own sheep farming exploits, breakfast serves up vegetables from Kematen, near Innsbruck (37 km away), fish, milk products and honey from Längenfeld (12 km away), and meat from Imst (37 km away). And there is still plenty of scope for new products considering the hotel’s position in the heart of the Tyrolean Alps, meaning 200 km will take you into Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

It’s not just food we enjoy with a clean conscience at the Bergland – the wine list also boasts numerous sustainable bottles from Austria and South Tyrol. Even those who insist on organic wine will find themselves richly rewarded – the hotel’s sommelier Johannes Hochschwarzer might recommend, for example, the pinot blanc or the chardonnay from Saint Valentin in South Tyrol, which meets the Regional 200 criteria. An organically produced South Tyrolean red called

Storlond is also sure to get the pulse of any wine connoisseur racing.

Beyond gastronomy, sustainability and regionality are also evident in the Sky SPA, where we are indulged with natural cosmetics products by Alpienne, a brand based in the Pitztal region of Tyrol: arolla pine and arnica lotion, natural salt peels, Alpine herb mud packs and much more. So regionality certainly isn’t lacking in the spa. Proof that

the tireless commitment of the Grüner family is paying off can be seen in certifications like Bewusst Tirol (Conscious Tyrol), which is awarded to tourism operations that use a large proportion of local products and therefore act as role models for tourism that is conscious of its surroundings. BACK TO THE ROOTS Anyone arriving in the wildly romantic village of Purgg will notice straight away that the clocks here just seem to tick differently. Slower somehow. Quieter. We also notice it at the Gästehaus Krenn, the beautifully renovated former focal point of the village, which used to provide lodgings for poets, artists and guests looking for a summer retreat. Here, it really doesn’t matter whether we go for one of the three cosy deluxe double rooms or one of the three spacious suites – every room embodies a piece of history that has been painstakingly and thoughtfully brought into the present thanks to the addition of modern elements.

You can almost picture the young artists that would have come here in summer in olden times to kick back and take inspiration from

And the building still delivers inspiration today, be it in the form of a book from the well-stocked library, the breath-taking view from one of the windows in the cosy breakfast lounge or while pondering in the homely dining room. The famous advent market in Pürgg is one of the special christmas markets in advent in Styria. On the first two weekends of Advent, the romantic village is transformed into a „Kripperl“, creates an idyllic christmas atmosphere and enchants its visitors year after year.

The exhibitors present their diverse, traditional crafts in the stables, garages, barns and houses of the picturesque little village. There we hear the snow crunching under our shoes again when we step out into the festively decorated village for a stroll following a cozy dinner at the Gasthaus Krenn. This gem of a pub from the 16th century is run with the greatest of respect for the history of the region and warm hospitality. The kitchen conjures up traditional dishes straight out of grandma’s recipe book,

including Blunzengrostl (fried potato with black pudding) and Sauerrahmsouffle (sour cream souffle) – traditional and hearty at lunchtime, a bit more refined in the evening.

Alternatively, you can pick up heavenly desserts, a tasty homemade bread roll with ham, or one or two delicacies from the selected producers from further afield in the guesthouse’s own delicatessen. It’s a superb village shop where we again encounter the unique charm of the past that, Christmas sparkle or not, will transform every visit into something truly special. It’s at this point that we’ll be more than happy for time to stand still.

Every class is different, every day is new. I don’t force my students and try to find a balance between strength and relaxation,” says Ben, who in the evenings doesn’t need much encouragement to share stories about his many yoga experiences.

it has been made at the hotel. The meat products come from a gourmet butcher, some of the cheeses come from a master cheesemaker in Erlangen. The eggs are delivered from a farm, the vegetables come straight from the surrounding Knoblauchsland region.

An unexpected hotel experience Dexamenes Seaside Hotel is located on one of the most unspoilt coastlines of the Western Peloponnese, on Kourouta Beach. The main building was a private residence, while the other was the Bishop of Lisbon’s former guesthouse. In 2019, these two buildings were joined by a modern apartment building. The outer courtyards decorated with a flower garden make the colors of the buildings stand out.

The overall renovation respected the characteristics of the architecture and kept the details of the old rooms, stairs, floors and gardens. Isabel Sá Nogueira, the designer of the Torel Palace in Lisbon, invited to give the interior areas of the unit a new set of clothes. All of the Rooms at the boutique unit are designed individually. The unit wanted to create a warm and sophisticated atmosphere while mixing modern amenities with the history of Portugal. At the private gardens or from the pool, guests have a breathtaking view over the city. Honoring the royals of Portugal, the unit gave the name of the Portuguese Kings and Queens to all of the rooms. In the pink building, each room is named after Queens, the name of the Portuguese Kings were given to the rooms of the blue building and the rooms in the white building were named after houses of the monarchy.
