COMMITTEE BRIEFS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

TECHONOLOGY

Chamber’s Economic Development Committee and the City of Boca Raton Working Together A sub-committee of the Chamber’s Economic Development Committee— chaired by Andrew Duffell, President and CEO of the Research Park at FAU and the City of Boca Raton Development Services Department, under the direction of Building Official, Mike Fichera—is working on solutions to expedite the process of permitting in Boca Raton. Through analysis of past projects, collaboration has netted gains in the areas of notifications to contractors and service enhancements to the city’s customers. Moving forward, the synergy of the two groups will continue to look for avenues to create an even greater business-friendly environment in Boca Raton.

Enhancing Members’ Businesses Through Tech-Education

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

Palm Beach County Business Leaders Fly-In to Tallahassee

This past October, a delegation of business and community leaders took the voice of Palm Beach County’s business community to national leaders. This year, we will participate in the Florida Chamber Board of Governors Capitol Days activities and discussions for the Tallahassee Fly-In scheduled for February 10 - 12, 2014. The current agenda includes scheduled visits for our Palm Beach legislators on our Capitol Hill; a Governor’s Mansion reception to meet Governor Rick Scott; a government affairs luncheon with state senators and representatives; panels that discuss federal health care law, legal reform, military and defense, and higher education; and Capitol briefing where attendees will hear from all Florida Chamber bill sponsors. Discussion topics are as follows: Making Florida the #1 private-sector job creator, creating a competitive and stable insurance market, doubling Florida-origin exports, further diversifying Florida’s economy, and reducing burdensome regulations on Florida’s businesses. Our chamber’s Legislative Agenda—focusing on city, county, state and federal issues that affect businesses—will be ready for distribution in late January. 6

Our Technology Committee had a very successful turnout for the “Get Your Head in the Cloud” Tech Forum this past September, hosted by FAU and sponsored by Cloud Computing Concepts, LLC (C3), with 150 Members in attendance. Cloud computing is an expression used to describe a variety of computing concepts that involve a large number of computers connected through a real-time communication operating system such as the Internet. Members learned how to implement the Cloud to (1) reduce the cost of expensive software (2) ensure their important files are safe, and (3) be able to work productively anywhere, at anytime! Join us for our next forum on video and social media entitled “Lights, Camera, Customers!” on January 17. Upon receiving your invitation, register quickly because seats fill up fast. Remember: these workshops are FREE, so take advantage of these business-building forums, and reap the rewards of your chamber membership.

COMMITTEE BRIEFS TOURISM Class is a certification facilitated by Dale Carnegie. Based on

Members Collaborate to Ensure Year-Round Visitor Spending

The Boca Chamber’s Tourism Committee is barely a year old, but that hasn’t stopped us from working diligently with some of the best Chamber Member professionals in the hotel, restaurant, retail, travel, recreational and entertainment industries to better serve our visitors. We are also working in the Medical Tourism sector to streamline Boca’s services and attractions for domestic and international visitors that come to Boca Raton for medical treatment. Boca attracts many visitors in need of medical care who come with their families and who are in need of guidance with what our great city offers. With so many industries, the task could be daunting, so we have partnered with West Boca Medical Center and Boca Raton Regional Hospital to form alliances with Chamber Members in the hotel, restaurant, retail, travel, recreational and entertainment industries to better serve our visitors seeking medical treatment at our facilities. Hosted by the Sonoma House, the Committee’s B.A.S.K (Boca’s About Service & Kindness) in Boca Customer Service

Carnegie’s course “Attitudes of Service,” this class serves to turn every visitor and customer encounter into a positive, memorable experience. Customers who have a positive experience are more likely to not only return in the future, but they will also share their enthusiam about Boca with their friends and family. Our first class was launched on October 2, 2013, and it was a success, attracting over 100 participants. We intend to host this class every quarter as everyone benefits— the customer, the business community, the local economy and, most importantly, South Palm Beach County. Our next class will be on January 22 at the Wyndham Hotel-Boca Raton, you can register by going to our website or by calling Sarah Pearson at 561.395.4433 ext. 238.

LEADERSHIP BOCA LEADERSHIP BOCA 2014 CLASS Engage, Experience, Elevate! Leadership Boca is an annual eight-week program developed for top business and community leaders looking to gain in-depth knowledge about the city of Boca Raton and surrounding communities. The application process for this competitive and exclusive program is currently open. This year, more than 40 participants will make up the Leadership Boca class of 2014. Participants of the class will come from a variety of industries and fields representing both small business owners and corporate executives in areas such as law, banking, education, and health care, to name a few. This dynamic program offers participants the opportunity to interact with leaders, businesses, agencies, and attractions surrounding the city and county landscape. Prior classes have benefited from visiting best-in-class corporate headquarters such as ADT, Office Depot, NCCI, and 3Cinteractive where participants were able to speak directly with top executives about how their businesses tie into Palm Beach County. In addition, participants visited vital community resources such as hospitals, universities, media outlets, government offices, attractions, nonprofits, and other community infrastructures. Another great quality of the program is that it demonstrates how active networking can develop into building long lasting relationships. These relationships strengthen our community and allow for both professional and personal growth. As part of the graduation celebration that takes place in June 2014, a new class president is introduced to assist with creating and executing the community class project. The project is designed with the goal of positively ELEVATING the community. Leadership Boca goes beyond many leadership programs becuase it creates unique and meaningful experiences that strengthen business leaders that live, learn and play in our community.

Meet the 2014 Chair and Co-Chair of Leadership Boca Brian Altschuler, Executive Director of Human Resource Operations for Boca Raton Regional Hospital, is serving as the Chair of Leadership Boca 2014. In addition, the program includes a Leadership & Strategy session led by an internationally-recognized strategist. The culmination of the various activities included in the Leadership Boca class has opened many opportunities for graduates to further advance their professional and personal goals with many going on to serve on local non-profit boards and becoming involved with local politics. CHAMBER PROGRAMS INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS ALLIANCE Our Chamber’s Newest Program is Helping the Business Community Go Global

This past November we held our first International Business Alliance roundtable discussion, sponsored by image360, at Lynn University. The International Business Alliance focuses on helping business owners succeed on a global scale and will open new doors to better, faster and stronger commerce around the globe. “The future is global and as a Chamber of Commerce we understand that, and we believe that by expanding our knowledge on global business, we can help our members advance and enhance their businesses,” says Troy McLellan, President & CEO of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce.

As the largest Chamber in Palm Beach County and one with the most diverse cultural group of members, we understand that the world is changing, and we are constantly moving along with it. It is our mission to promote and sustain economic prosperity in Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County, and we are certain that this new program will bring our community together and expand its knowledge on international business. The program runs the 1st Tuesday of every month and seats are limited. If you are interested in attending, please go to our website or contact Sarah Pearson at 561.395.4433 ext. 238 or via email at spearson@ bocaratonchamber.com

CHAMBER UPDATES NEW EMPLOYEES

Patricia Lammle

Cynthia Capaccio

Marketing & Communications Coordinator Patricia joined the Boca Chamber in late September, after having graduated from Lynn University with a Master of Science in Communication and Media. While at Lynn, Patricia worked as editor-in-Chief of iPulse, the University’s daily newspaper for nearly four years and was awarded ninth place as “Journalist of the Year” by the Southeast Journalism Conference. She has brought fresh, current insight and creative strategies on building an even stronger Marketing Department at the Chamber. She is the editor of Connection magazine and the Annual Directory. She also manages all the graphics, social media and outgoing communication as well as the website and public relations.

Cynthia is the newest addition to the Chamber’s professional staff. With over 14 years in post-secondary education, a doctorate and ordination, Cynthia is a ceremony officiant, writer, and lecturer. COMMUNITY HAPPENINGS ALLIANZ GOLF

Allianz Extends Tournament Title Sponsorship Through 2017 Ryan Dillon, Allianz Championship tournament director, announced that Allianz will continue as the Title Sponsor of the Allianz Championship through 2017. In this year alone, $500,000 were raised for charities thanks to the Championship. The 2014 Allianz Championship will again tee off at The Old Course at Broken Sound Club in Boca from February 3rd—9th. Not only does this golf event continue to feature some of the best athletes in golf, but the tournament has an annual economic impact of $15 million to the South Florida area, with Boca Raton Regional Hospital as the major beneficiary. Its primary purpose is to provide financial opportunities for its players and to entertain and inspire its fans. But it also delivers substantial value to its partners by creating outlets for volunteers to give back, protecting the integrity of the game, and generating significant charitable and economic impact in the communities in which it plays. This reputation has attracted the top 31 of 34 professionals to Boca along with golfing legends, with Allianz as the title sponsor of the tournament’s inception.

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

8th Annual Festival of the Arts Will Be a Very Special One The Festival of the Arts Boca, March 6 – 15, 2014, will assemble the biggest parade of stars in the event’s eight-year history at the Schmidt Family Centre for the Arts and the Mizner Park Amphitheater. It will open on March 6th with one of the world’s most beloved instrumental soloists who will perform with the Festival Orchestra conducted by Festival Music Director, maestro Constantine Kitsopoulos. Other performances include America’s leading dance troupe, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company; the blazing, technically flawless trumpeter from Cuba, Arturo Sandoval; and a delight for families of all ages, the Cirque de la Symphonie, combining the best elements of cirque and symphonic music, with some of the most amazing veterans of today’s cirque programs – aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers, and strongmen – Anna Deavere Smith accompanied by the Festival Orchestra. Headlining this season’s Authors & Ideas Program is Doris Kearns Goodwin, acclaimed presidential historian. Others include James Fallows, award winning national correspondent for the Atlantic; Anna Deavere Smith, award winning actress; and Geraldine Brooks, Pulitzer Prize winning author of numerous books, including most recently Caleb’s Crossing. It will close with the Florida premiere of the multicultural operatic tenor trio Forte whose performances on America’s Got Talent captivated millions and launched the group into the national spotlight.
