After 60 Years, Advocating for Business is Still Our Business A Message from your Chamber President
Happy New Year! Sixty years ago, the newlycreated Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce connected a network of local merchants who lived locally, shopped locally, and of course, worked locally. In the early 50s, the Chamber ran an informal membership drive by literally driving around town on Old Betsy, a grand old firetruck, going from business to business to tell them about the benefits of forming a strong community through tight business relationships. By Troy M. McLellan, CCE President & CEO, GBRCC
The Boca Chamber and the professionals who comprise our membership are some of the best examples of true business leadership and economic foresight. For 60 years, the consistent, crucial element of our success has been our volunteer leadership. We know we are in great hands with our current Chair Cheryl Budd of NCCI Holdings. In fact, many members of our Chamber Board of Directors are actively involved in important initiatives, like the 2012 Presidential Debate at Lynn University and MedUTech. MedUTech is an initiative focused on building up Boca's current cross-section of healthcare, education and technology industries. Current indicators show that these industries will be the nation’s new economic drivers and ensure our community's future prosperity.
The business people, then as now, realized the importance of knowing who you are doing business with, and that positive experiences lead to customer loyalty. The truth in this philosophy was evident. The Chamber membership quickly grew, as did the local economy.
'Old Betsy' was a great vehicle for business.
Today, in the incredibly digital year of 2012, I am glad to live in an area where the people, institutions and industries are all so focused on enhancing the family and work life on a local level. Many small business owners and employees of large Bocabased companies live locally, put their children through the local education system, pay taxes locally and spend their earnings right here as well. Every facet of community life in Boca Raton is doing their part to ensure our future success. The City of Boca Raton works to keep our world-class public services working at peak efficiency. Boca’s A-rated school system is doing an amazing job with an all-too-often trimmed budget. Our non-profit organizations work tirelessly to provide vital services to those who are in need. For our part, the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce strives to be the area’s pro-business catalyst in order to sustain a strong current of job creation and economic growth for our area.
On this, the Chamber’s 60th anniversary, our concept of community has evolved and grown into an international network of business leaders. Yet, our core goal remains the same: no matter if your company employs one or 10,001, the Boca Chamber helps you foster business strength through relationships and advocacy efforts, thereby facilitating the prosperity of Boca Raton and the surrounding communities.
Throughout the year, we urge you to get to know your Chamber community. Relationships lead to business referrals and strong business experiences will help your business grow. We also encourage you to “Buy Chamber” – to make sure your dollars keep benefitting Boca. The Chamber – through its advocacy efforts at the local, state, regional and national level, and through its educational programming and networking events – will continue to work to build a thriving community. The year 2012 marks significant milestones for many of our community and business partners. Whether your business is celebrating 50 years, 10 years or five days of business, know that your Chamber is here to help you continue on the road to success. I want to thank you for your commitment to good business and your support of the Chamber. Let's enjoy celebrating the last 60 years and get ready for the next 60!

The prestigious DIAMOND Award luncheon honors a woman who enjoys success in her field, while making a difference in the Boca Raton Community. In 2012, the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce honors Marta I. Rendon, M.D., as the recipient of the Annual DIAMOND Award. A DIAMOND Businesswoman is: Dedicated, Inspiring, Accomplished, Motivated, Outstanding, Noble, and Driven to help make her community shine.
OUR HONOREE:
DR. MARTA I. RENDON
Passion for people, her family, and her life-long mission to advance science, research technologies, and dermatologic medicine personifies the woman affectionately known as “Eagle Eye Rendon.” Since she was a young girl, Marta I. Rendon, M.D. has had a deep fascination with science. It would come as no surprise to her parents one day that they would discover their nine year old daughter dissecting a frog for the pure wonderment of knowledge in her room at her birthplace of Medellin, Colombia. Dr. Rendon’s enchantment with science continued through her teen years, where she excelled in school and completed her high school education two years early. She persevered through medical school, earning her medical degree from the prestigious University of Puerto Rico in San Juan before the age of 23. Although Dr Rendon completed her internal medicine residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Dr. Rendon’s compassion for her grandmother’s skin disease of Psoriasis ultimately lead to her to her true calling of dermatology; The dynamo completed her residency in dermatology at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.
Dr. Marta I. Rendon Rendon Center for Dermatology & Aesthetic Medicine
Fast forward 25-years later and Dr. Rendon finds herself seated as the medical director at her flourishing private practice in Boca Raton, Florida--The Rendon Center for Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine. Her state of the art, 7,000-square-foot facility is a completion of Dr. Rendon’s life-long mission. Her goal is one of passion and profession to her patients.
Dr. Rendon--the previous chairperson of the Department of Dermatology of Cleveland Clinic Florida, -- also serves as a clinical associate professor to the Department of Dermatology at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine and in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. She has gained notoriety through serving as the spokesperson for Procter & Gamble’s Head & Shoulders’ brand as their “global celebrity dermatologist,” and has been a speaker, advisor to and physician trainer for a multitude of companies, including Merz Pharmaceuticals, Allergan, Galderma, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Medicis, L’Oreal, among others. If humanitarianism were a degree one could obtain from a university Dr Rendon would surely have graduated with the highest honors. Somehow she squeezes enough time out of her busy day to participate in many local charitable causes. She is a generous donator to The Junior League, Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation, Spirit of Giving, and Soroptimist causes as well as to a multitude of others. Although Dr. Rendon is extremely proud of her thriving professional life and the distinguished global reputation she has garnered in her field, the connection she shares with her 18 year old son matters most to her. Juan, who recently graduated St Andrew's Prepatory School is now enrolled at the University of Miami. She and her fiancé, Dr Bret Ribotsky, enjoy spending time and traveling with their children.

How to Land Your Dream Job!
Since the end of the year is here, we often think about changing jobs. We are scared this year to even think about that in light of the job opportunity outlook. Don’t be. Companies will often find a place for someone who can prove their worth. How? Here are some ideas. I recently had the opportunity to be a guest on a radio show. I was caught a little off guard when I was asked, while on the air, how to use “selling skills” to get a job. I hesitated, since that really isn’t what I do. Since the radio host was familiar with my program, he felt there was a lot of synergy. After I did the show, I got to thinking about the idea he brought up, and how getting a job really is so similar to sales … and life. Here are five steps to help you land the job of your dreams: • Network. Use the contacts that you have as extra eyes. Let them know what you are looking for. Be specific and get out there. • Set up one-on-one meetings with people that you know. Get coffee, a drink, etc. Help people understand what you are looking for, and give examples of the type of organizations and specific job descriptions. Again, make sure you are specific. People can’t think for you, even though you think they can.
• When applying for a job, you must do something unique. Today, there are just too many people looking for the same job you are applying for. So, how do you rise above the rest? Sending a resume is so last century. I would suggest that you try to be different. One way is to send your information (resume, if you must) in a unique
way. For example, I was once applying for a job with Procter & Gamble. I was in college (about 100 years ago), and the career center had the interviews set up, but P&G booked up quickly. So, I called ahead and found out who was coming to do the interviews. I silk-screened my resume onto a T-shirt, rolled it up and slid it into a Colgate toothpaste box, and mailed it to the sales director, signature required. I got the interview. • When you are set up to be interviewed, do lots of research in advance. Spend time researching the company and interviewer. Create questions about the organization’s vision, what customers/ clients say about them and what competitors say about them. Ask the interviewer about their experience with the company, what they like best about the organization, their job, etc. This gives lots of good insight to how the employees feel, and shows you have a real interest in them, too. • Follow up. There are several ways to do this. I think e-mail is fine, but does that really differentiate you? Here’s an idea: a talking e-mail. You can talk into a video e-mail message and really make an impression. Try www.talkinemail.com. I love it and have been using it a ton. Remember, the best time to look for a job is when you already have one. If you are in a situation where you are out of work, your job is to look for a job eight hours a day, five days a week! A Breath of Fresh Air for Older Buildings Many South Florida businesses are housed in buildings constructed years before anyone gave serious consideration to green building practices. But with a few retrofits—and a little consciousness-raising—pre-green buildings can do their part to conserve energy and help their hosts save money. Whether yours is a small or a larger business, going green is not a one-step process. It’s the cumulative effect of forward steps and good intentions. Some of these steps are simple and cost little; others require larger investments of time and money. Recognizing that organizations need a blueprint for green efforts, the North Carolina-based Institute for Sustainable Development offers Green Plus certification to small-to-mediumsized organizations. The certification recognizes companies for their green environments, their green attitudes, and their green intentions. The U.S. Green Building Council offers LEED certification, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification system. But LEED certification is a stringent process, which is often cost prohibitive. Green Plus, which looks at a corporation’s attitude, in addition to its physical plant, is a more inclusive avenue for recognition. That doesn’t mean it’s easy. To date, some 50 companies of every 250 applicants achieve Green Plus certification. It requires serious effort and commitment that starts with the company’s leaders and filters down through the rank and file.
Steps toward a Green Plus certification include: Sustainable Sites: • Identifying possible sources of pollution • Conducting waste audits • Creating an alternative transportation policy • Using native vegetation and landscaping that require less water Water Efficiency: • Implementing water-saving measures • Setting goals for reducing water use Energy and Atmosphere: • Conducting an energy audit • Using renewable energy or purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs) Materials and Resources: • Adopting an environmental purchasing strategy • Purchasing Fair Trade products • Conducting a solid waste audit • Recycling Indoor Environmental Quality: • Opening work areas to daylight Innovations and Operations: • Making a solid business case for sustainability upgrades Written by Tao Woolfe of NCCI Holdings, Inc., which recently earned its Green Plus certification as result of the culmination of energy-saving and environmentally conscious initiatives over the past three years. NCCI, based in Boca Raton, employs 925 professionals dedicated to fostering a healthy workers compensation system by providing high-quality information and analytical services to its stakeholders throughout the country. What Your Marketing & Communications (MarCom) Says About Your Business When reflecting on the businesses celebrating milestone anniversaries this year, it is clear that those that have continued to thrive have done so by remaining “market-relevant”. To navigate through good and challenging economic cycles, most did so by focusing on developing astute MarCom strategies, rather than mere checklists of communications channels, had the courage to embrace creativity when others in their industries were adverse to it, engaged in consistent on-going messaging, built their foundations on effective alliance-building, and retained MarCom specialists to effectively inspire and guide them, and assist in averting costly tunnel vision and preventable crises.

A Moment With a Boca Chamber Member Meet Rick Schuster Jaycee Realty, Inc
1. How long have you been in business? I grew up in an
environment where my parents owned and operated 400+ residential units in Rochester, New York. I obtained my real estate license in 2001. I originally “hung” the license with a friend and later opened my own real estate company, Jaycee Realty, which is named after my children and my wife. I have since obtained my title insurance license and am licensed as a mortgage broker.
2. What is the main goal of your business?
Over the past several years, the primary focus of my business has been to provide assistance to individuals/families who owe more on their home than their home’s value. In the previous 5 years this has equated to Jaycee Realty (and my title insurance company) arranging for short sale assistance related to over 500 homes. Our efforts are extremely fulfilling in that we have assisted these individuals/families in the avoidance of foreclosure. We do all this work without directly charging the consumer.
3. Who inspired you to go into business?
My dad has had the greatest influence in my business career. He has the patience of a saint!! I cannot thank him enough for all his direction, motivation, positive reinforcement and nurturing over my lifetime. Thanks dad!
4. What are the two greatest advantages of doing business in Boca Raton / being a member of the Boca Chamber? I have been involved in a Chamber of Commerce “leads group” for over 10 years (off and on). I have found that the business generated from these groups is tremendous. More importantly, I have found that the personal relationships garnered via my Chamber of Commerce experiences are genuine and will last a lifetime.
5. Where should I go to find out more?
Jaycee Realty Inc. www.jayceerealty.com (561) 208-8469 20283 State Road 7, Ste 400, Boca Raton, FL 33498 rick@jayceerealty.com
