COMMITTEE BRIEFS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Sustainable Economic Development in Southern Palm Beach County
Written by Andrew Duffell President & CEO, Research Park at Florida Atlantic University The National Business Incubator Association (NBIA) has repeatedly shown that a company’s chances of surviving its first five years are improved by as much as 80% by participating in a formal incubator program. Greater Boca Raton has our region’s longest-standing incubator: the Technology Business Incubator (TBI) in the Research Park at Florida Atlantic University. This year we have re-oriented how we interact with the entrepreneurs, and we are bringing them significantly more value by creating a high-impact Council of Advisors. These advisors are successful entrepreneurs in their own right, and they volunteer their time and expertise to help our startups. The advisors help the companies set their own milestones for success, working with them along the way. At the six-month mark, an assessment is made about whether the company is on track or not. If not, adjustments are made. Within two years, we anticipate that a company will progress to a point
where it is self-sufficient, creating revenues and is ready to graduate into the Research Park itself or the South Florida community at large. When these companies emerge into our cities, they need to know that the municipalities they work in are committed to their success. The Boca Chamber’s economic development committee, which I am privileged to lead, has begun a process of interaction with the City of Boca Raton to ensure that the right conditions exist for these TBI graduates and all businesses that call Boca Raton home. A sub-committee led by Dick Lee, of Boca Luxury Realty, has partnered with the City’s Development Services team to ensure the permitting process is not an impediment to doing business in this beautiful city. This partnership has revealed some areas that could be improved, and City staff has embraced many of these opportunities for improvement. For example, when a home owner contracts for home improvements, the City will now email the homeowner, reminding him/her how to follow the progress of permits online. This will reduce delay by illustrating which party has submitted paperwork and which has action steps to complete. The Economic Development Committee works on issues like this, along with the Government Affairs Committee and Chamber staff, on your behalf. Together, we make sure that it is as easy as possible to do business in Boca Raton.
ELECTION RESULTS Congratulations to the Newly Elected Officials The city’s election this past March was very unique. It was the first time this city has ever seen two colleagues within the council compete to earn the mayor’s seat. Former Deputy Mayor Susan Haynie and former Councilman Anthony Majhess ran for the seat of Mayor. This election also stood out over past elections in the last 17 years because four out of the five City Council seats were up for election or re-election. One of the priorities of the Boca Chamber is to ensure a pro-business environment where your company has the opportunity to succeed and thrive, so it is critical that our city’s elected officials understand and support the needs and demands of Boca’s business community. Therefore, the Business Leaders United for Boca Raton Political Action Committee (BLUPAC) endorsed Craig Ehrnst for Seat B, Robert Weinroth for Seat D on the council, and Susan Haynie for Mayor. 6
Susan Haynie served five terms on the Boca Raton City Council, and her experience has given her extensive knowledge of the city’s budget, public safety and growth concerns. As Deputy Mayor, Haynie has made it the city council’s priority to keep taxes low, improve our beaches, and ensure Boca is on a sustainable economic and environmental path. We are proud of her achievements, and we look forward to seeing her vision to enhance our community and sustain and promote its economic growth come to completion. Additionally, we would like to congratulate Robert Weinroth and Scott Singer on their new positions with the city, and we look forward to seeing their ideas put in practice as well. We look forward to working with these newly elected officials and with the entire Boca Raton City Council as we move our city forward.

2014 LEGISLATIVE AGENDA Your Chamber; Your Watchdog
2014 Business Legislative Agenda
The Florida 2014 Legislative Session is in full swing. Members of the South Palm Beach County business community should advocate for pro-business decisions to be made by our legislators. The Boca Chamber, South Palm Beach County’s voice for business, has created its annual Legislative Agenda. It was developed based on input from 13 entities including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Chamber of Commerce, the Palm Beach County Business Development Board and the Boca Chamber membership. The agenda is a blueprint to chart the course for a strong and sustainable regional business community, and it is focused on creating a positive business climate and lowering the cost of doing business. A snapshot of the agenda includes the following city and county priorities: • Support the stoppage of new mandatory leave initiatives that will increase costs for business and create an uncompetitive business environment in Florida. • Support amending Florida statues so that a referendum is prohibited in regard to local comprehensive plan amendments. • Support the reduction of sales tax charged on commercial real estate property. For a full agenda visit our website Protecting Business (www.bocachamber.com) As you know, the Chamber uses the items outlined in the legislative agenda as a guideline to endorse pro-business candidates for city, county and state elections. This is done through our political action committee (BLU-PAC). Ensuring a pro-business environment where your company has the opportunity to succeed and thrive is a priority for the Chamber. In order to provide that environment, it is critical that our elected officials understand the needs and demands on what it takes to operate a successful business. Business Leaders United for Boca Raton Political Action Committee (BLU-PAC) exists to endorse and fund candidates that are in alignment with the Boca Chamber’s views and priorities regarding business.
City Issues • Support the best use of city dedicated economic development dollars by creating an oversight advisory board to ensure that those funds are used for their original intent: to create jobs and foster economic prosperity. • Support annexation of areas that provide opportunity to enhance Boca Raton and increase revenue potential specifically in the area of economic development, to: 1.) create jobs 2.) support economic development 3.) broaden the tax base. • Support economic development in Boca Raton, inclusive of the downtown, the 20th Street Overlay District and the Planned Mobility Efforts that address multiple uses of property. • Support reform to sustain the city of Boca Raton retirement system and mitigate financial risk to the city. www.bocachamber.com
• Support public policy that sustains Boca Raton’s quality for businesses and families. • Support and assist the city’s permitting procedures to more appropriately enhance the local economy through efficient and effective policy that encourages job creation. • Support an ordinance that allows a local preference positive adjustment in the bid process when the company holds a Business Tax Receipt issued by the City of Boca Raton. • Support the creation of an Independent Community Redevelopment Administration Director to enhance the CRA district and create a sense of place in downtown Boca Raton. • Encourage the City of Boca Raton to create additional parking opportunities that meet the demands of sustainable growth.

Don’t you have better things to do?
As a busy executive, you already understand the huge value technology brings to your business. And the last thing you need is to have it go haywire. Who do you call? How long do you wait? How much pain do you feel? You don’t have to go through that every time your system hiccups, a laptop gets a virus, or your data isn’t available because it hasn’t been backed up. There’s a better way. Managed IT Services from JDL Technologies enable you to focus on the priorities that drive your business. Not on the obstacles that slow it down.

Our Managed IT Services include 24/7 client help desk, round-the-clock network monitoring, backup and recovery, vendor management, strategic IT planning, service reviews and more. We’ve built a solid record of success in South Florida helping mid-size and smaller businesses do what they do best. By doing what we do best. Let us do the same for you.

MEMBER BUZZ LATEST MEMBER PRESS RELEASES
Due to press deadlines these news releases are from Decemeber 2013 through February 2014 FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus to Offer Jupiter Summer Science Experience 2014
Gary S. Lesser named Attorney of the Month for Attorney at Law Magazine
Florida Atlantic University continues to expand its Life Science Initiative on the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter with the announcement of the Jupiter Summer Science Experience. The summer program is an opportunity for students to enhance their education in the life sciences and other academic disciplines, and a number of research-based experiences, including internships, will be available. The Jupiter Summer Science Experience offers students from FAU as well as other colleges a chance to become part of the MacArthur Campus’ innovative Life Science Initiative. Research collaborations have recently been launched between faculty at FAU and researchers at the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and the Scripps Florida Research Institute.
Lesser credits all the attorneys at the firm with its reputation for being prepared and willing to take cases to trial. That is an important factor when considering what Lesser says is the typical insurance company business model. “They take premiums, and they try to not pay claims in the sense that they pay as little as they can, and take as long to do so as possible, and that’s how they make a profit.” Despite Lesser’s role as managing partner, he still prefers to share the spotlight with the entire firm. “I don’t like to brag,” he says, “but the lawyers at this firm have collectively over 2,000 trials under their belt. We have some of the best trial lawyers in all of South Florida.” Th at reputation is instrumental in the firm’s continued success. Many cases are referred by current and former clients, some by people the firm’s attorneys know in the community, and a growing number of cases are referred by other lawyers. Lesser explains that those lawyers who bring in our firm’s lawyers is like “bringing in a teammate who can take the case to the next level to get the best result for the client.”

FAU’s Executive M.B.A. Program Recognized in ‘Bloomberg Businessweek’s Best Business Schools of 2013’ Report Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business has announced that its AACSB-accredited executive M.B.A. program has been recognized by Bloomberg Businessweek’s “Best Business Schools of 2013” report. This report is unique in that it reflects student opinion and was based on a survey of more than 10,000 recent graduates at 138 business schools. This is the first year that FAU has been recognized, and is one of three Florida universities listed in the second tier, alongside Rice, Texas A&M and Michigan State universities. Bloomberg Businessweek has been ranking the world’s top business programs since 1991. “We are excited to be recognized by Bloomberg Businessweek. I believe the most important thing is to deliver high-quality programs. To be one of three executive M.B.A. programs recognized in the state of Florida speaks to the outstanding faculty and staff who teach and manage the program,” said Dan Gropper, Ph.D. dean of FAU’s College of Business. The Seagate Country Club in Delray Beach Completes After Renovations The Seagate Country Club has unveiled a full renovation of its 18-hole championship private golf course on November 20, 2013. The original home of the first Golf Digest School, the Club’s seven-month renovation began on May 1, 2013 and renovations preserved the original Joe Lee design while modernizing and enhancing its condition. The project was all-encompassing, with restoration focused on the course’s fairways, greens, bunkers and practice facilities as well as modifications to several holes. The Seagate has continued its commitment to recruit and retain Top PGA Professionals for its members. Darren Panks, Director of Golf and International PGA Professional, directs the 18-hole Joe Lee golf course while Head PGA Professional Andy Anderson is a PGA Professional who has been at the club for over 30 years. LGPA Professional Whitney Young leads the women’s golf and Jeff Sluman, PGA Championship Tour player and current club member, was instrumental in providing input on course enhancements to make sure the course met PGA standards.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
TRUSTEE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Get to Know Pink Palm Properties How long have you been in business? Since 2005 in Florida. The Boca Raton office opened in 2011. What is the main goal of your business? Our reason for being [in business] is to raise the bar in the profession of real estate in Boca Raton. We serve a diverse clientele, but the bulk of our clients are international buyers/sellers and local business owners, executives, and professionals. Our two managing partners each have an MBA and a corporate background, thus bringing a wealth of understanding and experience to complex transactions. We find our background is most appreciated by business owners and executives who demand a higher level of professionalism and service than the norm. Who inspired you to go into business? We were both active real estate investors working in the corporate world prior to pursuing broker’s licenses. In every market we worked and invested in (Montreal, Toronto, Las Vegas, Southern California, Miami, and Boca Raton), we saw a huge opening in the field of real estate for high-performers www.bocachamber.com
to provide high-caliber guidance to the most demanding clients. In some countries, obtaining a broker’s license is a two-year process requiring a thorough understanding of finance, land development, and construction. Not so in the US. We saw a huge opening to put our years of experience to work for the benefit of all. What are the two greatest advantages of doing business in Boca Raton and being a member of the Boca Chamber? Hands-down, relationships and connections. We recently assisted in relocating a company (along with 50 employees and their families) from Montreal. On their first visit (we later discovered), they were deciding between Austin and Boca Raton. We made introductions to attorneys, CPAs, local business owners, bankers, etc. across town and the warm welcome and connections really impressed them. The relationship with the Chamber was a key component of our success in this endeavor. Where should I go to find out more? www.pinkpalm.com 561-300-2647 or info@pinkpalm.us

INSIDE OUR REBRANDING The Road to our New Logo and Website After more than 30 years, the professional team at the Boca Chamber decided it was time for a change. We have been helping our community for more than 60 years, and we are always moving forward and improving our brand to support our mission to promote and sustain economic prosperity in Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County. Therefore, we wanted our image to reflect our current position and future goals within South Palm Beach County. WE ARE PROUD TO INTRODUCE YOU TO THE NEW… Boca Chamber
This rebranding reflects our efforts to create a current look while embracing the core values of our organization. The fresh and current appearance of our new logo is a modern, relevant representation of who we are. The center design of the “o” in “Boca” represents our community with four intertwined lines to denote the connection among our chamber members. Those four lines also represent the four key components of our mission: Connecting Members, Advancing Commerce, Protecting Business and Enhancing Community (CAPE). These components make it possible for us to accomplish our mission. In addition, the circle symbolizes the global business environment that exists in Boca Raton. The lines around the “o” appear to be spinning because we are constantly moving forward, finding innovative ways to advance commerce and make Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County one of the best places in the country to live, work, learn and play. This vision is further developed through our new website, which embraces the sleek and modern look of our logo and uses the same colors not only to remain consistent but also because blue represents integrity, trust and strength, and green symbolizes growth, prosperity and commerce. This newly configured website will make it easier for you to navigate and find information to maximize your membership privileges. MEMBER BENEFITS We encourage you to log in to your Boca Chamber Business Profile as soon as possible to begin taking advantage of these opportunities. For instance, you can use your member login to link your social media platforms to our Business Directory. When your business is searched in the directory, these icons will be on display and will take visitors directly to your pages. In addition, you can: • Add member-to-member coupons. • Add your special events to our Community Calendar. • Review your referral report. • Place a “Help Wanted” ad on our Website! • Update and make changes to your contact information. www.bocachamber.com
