The longer I live in South Florida, the more I can’t imagine living anywhere else. The winter season has been unseasonably cold and stormy in most all other parts of the country, while we’ve been enjoying lovely, balmy weather. In fact, it was difficult for me to remember what cold felt like until I had to pack a suitcase and take a trip up north at the end of the year. It actually took my breath away; it was that cold! With beautiful weather all year round in South Florida, it is easy to get involved in outdoor activities - whether actively or as a spectator. Golf, tennis and equestrian are a big draw with so many excellent facilities in the area, while boating, fishing and water sports are some of the best in the country and easily accessible. South Florida has also attracted an impressive array of art and culture, and is considered among the world’s most celebrated cultural destinations. Be sure to check out the 2014 Calendar of Events on page 24 for a list of upcoming happenings. Some of the finest residential country clubs are located in South Florida. In this issue we are highlighting Boca West Country Club and Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club, two award-winning communities set in beautiful, lush landscaping and offering first class amenities and state-of-theart-facilities. Contact them directly to find out how you can experience their community for the day or weekend and explore the possibility of making their lifestyle your own. The great news is that the South Florida real estate market is in recovery mode according to many experts, as people are ready to put the concerns of the last few years behind them and start investing in real estate again. Home prices have increased some, but are still below the peak of the market in December 2006. Now could be an excellent time to search for your dream home in South Florida. If you are a business owner looking for an incentive to open or relocate a business to warmer weather, Florida has continued to provide a stable and highly favorable tax climate. See page 19 for additional information and a complete listing of tax advantages. There are many compelling reasons to consider Palm Beach County for your business, to include a supportive environment for many types of industries, a motivated and educated workforce, and an exceptional quality of life. South Florida provides a beautiful backdrop for work as well as play. I invite you to browse through the following pages, dream big and make those dreams come true!

essentials Florida History In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon was the first European explorer to claim Florida when he landed in Northeast Florida while on a hunt for treasure. He called the land “La Florida” because it was covered with flowers. It was also a tribute to the Eastertime Spanish Feast of Flowers called Pascua Florida. St. Augustine is the oldest European settlement in North America. Florida was controlled at different times by Spain and England until Spain finally sold it to the United States in 1819. Florida became a U.S. Territory in 1821 and two decades later, in 1845, Florida was admitted to the union as the 27th U.S. state. In April of 2013, Florida celebrated its 500th birthday with “Viva Florida 500.” The Florida economy first developed with the use of natural resources in logging, mining, fishing and sponge diving. Cattle ranching, farming and the cultivation of citrus followed, with Florida leading the southeast in farm income, as well as producing 67% of the U.S. oranges, accounting for approximately 40% of the world’s orange juice supply. The tourism, real estate, trade, banking, and retirement destination businesses were later developed in the state, becoming important economic drivers. As the Sunshine State’s No. 1 industry, tourism was responsible for welcoming 89.3 million visitors in 2012, up 2.3 percent compared with a year earlier.* *Source: Orlando Sentinel, Feb. 18, 2013
Florida Facts Florida’s population (2012) is 19,552,860, ranking behind only California, Texas and New York. Florida has 1,800 miles of coastline and more than 11,000 miles of rivers, streams and waterways. Florida has approximately 4,500 islands larger than ten acres (only Alaska claims more in the U.S). Lake Okeechobee, which covers 700 square miles, is the second largest freshwater lake in the United States. There are more than 1,250 golf courses in Florida (more than any other state). Palm Beach County has more than any other county in the country and is also Florida’s largest county. The Florida State Flower is the Orange Blossom and in 1967 the Florida legislature designated orange juice as the official state beverage. The Florida State Bird is the Mockingbird (designated 1927), not the flamingo. Although the flamingo may be more exotic to study, the mockingbird is a year-round resident of Florida and a superb songbird. The state saltwater mammal is the porpoise and the state shell is the horse conch.

South Florida Climate The climate has always been one of Florida’s most important natural resources and is reflected in its official nickname, the “Sunshine State.” South Florida has a tropical climate and is known around the world for its balmy weather. Summers throughout the state are long, warm, and fairly humid with a defined rainy season from June through September. Winters are mild with periodic cool spells due to occasional cold fronts that push through. Winter temperatures in South Florida range from daytime highs of 64 to 77º Fahrenheit to lows of around 40º Fahrenheit. Summer temperatures are normally in the range of the low 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit throughout any 24-hour period. Coastal areas in all regions of Florida average slightly warmer temperatures in winter and cooler ones in summer compared to the inland parts of the state. The primary factors affecting the state’s climate are its latitude and the numerous inland lakes. Proximity to the currents of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico also plays an important role. Easterly winds off the warm waters of the Gulf Stream running through the Florida Straits keep temperatures moderate across the southern peninsula year round.

Beaches & Water Sports Beautiful sandy beaches abound on the east coast of South Florida, with many options for fun that include swimming, snorkeling, diving, boating, parasailing, riding wave runners, kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing and fishing. Any time of year is great for water sports, as the water temperature stays balmy throughout the year. Atlantic Ocean water temperatures are much warmer in South Florida than in the rest of Florida, with the average water temperature from December to March between 70 and 74º Fahrenheit and April to November in the range of 78 to 86º. Divers and snorkelers are able to explore reefs and an abundance of deep-water wrecks that are considered among the best in the country for exploration. Jupiter’s beaches have long been a retreat for surfers and beachgoers. The town is also home to one of the few remaining dog friendly beaches in the state. Take a cruise along the Intracoastal to view Dubois Park, Jupiter Inlet, the celebrity homes of Jupiter Island and the Jupiter Lighthouse. Palm Beach, also known as the playground of the rich and famous, has some of the area’s best beaches. Delray Municipal Beach is a 7,000-foot beach with designated areas for swimming, surfing, volleyball, sailing, wind surfing, snorkeling and flying kites. Boca Raton’s beaches are a natural treasure, as most are connected to parks. Red Reef Park offers great snorkeling, swimming, sunbathing, surfcasting, and strolling over the dunes along a boardwalk and is also one of the few beaches open after dark. The park includes the 15-acre Gumbo Limbo Nature Center on the Intracoastal side. South Inlet Park Beach on the Boca Raton inlet stretches from the ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway, featuring a jetty for fishing and sightseeing. It is also a good place to windsurf, jet ski, canoe or kayak. Follow the inlet to Lake Boca and you will find a favorite hangout for boaters to raft-up, drop anchor and enjoy the day.

Boating It is no idle boast: Florida is the boating capital of the world. There are more registered boats in Florida than any other U.S. state and at least 100,000 out-of-state boats are on Florida waters on any given day. Whether you cruise the Intracoastal Waterway, head out through an inlet to the Atlantic Ocean, breeze across the Florida Everglades on a propeller-powered airboat or find a quiet lake to cut bait, South Florida is a boater’s paradise. There are numerous marinas and boat launching sites, as well as rental, charter, and cruising opportunities. The 28th Annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, March 20 – 23, 2014, is one of the top ten boat shows in the country - featuring more than $1.2 billion worth of boats, yachts, and accessories from the world’s leading marine manufacturers. Fort Lauderdale, the “Yachting Capital of the World” is also a major yachting center and hosts the annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, October 30 – November 3, 2014, one of the largest events of its kind in the world.

Fishing The east coast of South Florida boasts some of the best inshore and offshore fishing in the world. The climate allows for year round deep-sea fishing and fun in the sun, with the nutrient-rich waters of the Gulf Stream passing within a few miles of shore. In between these famous fishing waters lie countless miles of productive fishing canals, rivers, estuaries, and the Intracoastal Waterway. Fishing enthusiasts can pursue 800 species of fish in South Florida. While winter is peak season for grouper and sailfish, the transition into spring brings blue marlin and mahi-mahi. Under the summer sun, fishermen can find concentrations of yellowtail, blue marlin and the occasional tuna. In the fall, black and silver mullet travel south along coastal beaches, as do bluefish, snook, tarpon, barracuda, kingfish and jack crevalle, among many other fish species. Lake Okeechobee is known for its freshwater fishing and famous for its large resident bass. Anglers from all over the world come to drop their lines in the second largest freshwater lake in the U.S., eager to reel in their trophy fish.

south florida real estate market news South Florida Homes Sales Off to Strong Start in 2014 South Florida home sales are off to a strong start in 2014 as both volume and prices were up in January according to Florida Realtors, a trade group. Singlefamily home sales grew 3 percent as compared to January 2013 and the median sales price was $248,000, a 15.6 percent increase. [1] Overall, Florida’s home prices dropped more than 48 percent from the first quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2013. [2] At the time of the housing meltdown, there was an overabundance of properties and not enough buyers willing to take a risk and enter the market. Those who analyze South Florida real estate would be sure to say it is officially in recovery mode. This is especially true for those looking to buy in the luxury market. [3] South Florida saw the biggest monthly gain in home prices in December 2013 on the S&P/Case-Shiller index, ending its best year since 2005. Gains, however, are slowing from month-to-month and the strongest part of the recovery in home values may be over. Prices are now at May 2004 levels, according to the index, but are still nearly 37 percent below the peak of the market in December 2006. Prices on single-family homes in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties grew 0.9 percent in December 2013 from November 2013 and were higher than any other monthly gain in the measure of the nation’s 20 largest metro areas. On an annual basis, South Florida’s prices were up 16.5 percent in December 2013 from the same time in 2012, ranking it sixth in annual gains. [4] There seems to be an overwhelming consensus among experts that the real estate market is on its way up in South Florida. People are ready to put the concerns of the last few years behind them and start investing in real estate again. Owning a home in South Florida has the beauty of feeling like you’re in the Caribbean while having close proximity to world-class resources. Whether the market recovers rapidly or with sporadic gains – now could be an excellent time to search for a dream home.

DEFINING FINE FLORIDA LIVING
Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club A premier golf and boating community in beautiful Jupiter.
Jonathan’s Landing is the definition of the good life— a place where memories are made every day, through the simple moments and the celebratory.
36 South Florida Living
A half-mile from the clear blue Atlantic Ocean, in the seaside town of Jupiter, there is a warm and welcoming community where the active Florida lifestyle truly comes into its own. Lapped by the Intracoastal Waterway and buffered by a Tom Fazio-designed golf course, Jonathan’s Landing is the rare Florida community that mixes manicured beauty and stunning natural scenery in a setting conveniently close to world-class shopping, dining and culture.
Jonathan’s Landing
The celebrated Florida golf lifestyle plays out on three beautiful courses with unique appeal. When it comes to quality of life, location is supremely important. And at Jonathan’s Landing, a lifestyle connected to the water and laced with active experiences is central to the business of living well. Lakes and canals cover 125 of this golfing community’s 600 acres, so you can spend your sunsets paddling a kayak along waters rippled with schooling fish or access the deep water marina to take your boat out for a serious fishing trip in the Atlantic. Stroll around the path skirting Lake Barton before a trip to the onsite fitness center and spa. Or spend your days on the golf course or improving your tennis game. At Jonathan’s Landing, living life to the fullest comes naturally. Coastal Living Magazine recently named Jupiter, FL. among the top ten “happiest” coastal towns in the country thanks to the beautiful beaches, abundant golfing and friendly Florida vibe—all with access to world class dining and culture, to boot. The town of Jupiter bustles with restaurants, shopping and cultural activities, and for additional entertainment West Palm Beach is just minutes away. Flying in to the area is easy with Palm Beach International Airport a mere 30 minutes south. If you’re wondering if you fit the profile of Jupiter’s happy residents, you need only
ask yourself a few questions. Are you searching for a beautiful setting blessed with year-round sunshine and stunning beaches as well as golf, tennis, dining and culture? Are you tired of cold winters and looking to stay active year-round? Do you want to live in a community filled with active people with diverse interests? If you answered yes, you’ll fit right in at Jonathan’s Landing. The golf lifestyle is an important draw for many residents. If you’re addicted to the sport there is so much to love—and so close to home! Tom Fazio’s “Village” course, the first to open at Jonathan’s Landing, is located within the community gates and winds among the homes, lakes and waterways dotting the verdant village. The course has won kudos for being the only one in the U.S. with a ferryboat. At its signature 17th hole, golfers face a second shot over water, after which they are transported by automatic ferry across the Intracoastal Waterway to continue the game. The ferry accommodates two golf carts and is a real attraction for members and their friends. But your golfing fun at Jonathan’s Landing extends beyond the community’s gates, too.
Two additional golf courses located in the Club’s second property at Jonathan’s Landing at Old Trail also invite members to try their skills on the greens. The “Fazio” course is considered one of Tom Fazio’s best designs and presents a true test for players up to the challenge. The fairways wind among wetlands and towering pines, with dramatic contours shaping the variety of play. A single road (Clubhouse Drive) is the only access point between the front and the back nine, so players truly feel at one with nature when playing. The natural beauty of the cypress hammocks and towering pine stands of southwest Florida also comes into play on the “Hills” course, similarly located within Jonathan’s Landing at Old Trail. Appealing to golfers of all abilities with a range of holes that place the emphasis on accuracy over power, it’s a good balance to the “Fazio” course.
Join the Club for golf, tennis and more – everyone’s welcome. In addition to the three Jonathan’s Landing golf courses and the community’s excellent Pro Shop, with its staff of certified PGA professionals at the ready to help improve your game, there’s another key element to the sporting life at Jonathan’s Landing: Tennis. South Florida Living 37
At Jonathan’s Landing, the outdoor lifestyle is all around you. The Club has more than 250 active members, who play tennis, so there’s always an inter-club league or a doubles tennis match to join while enjoying one of the ten Har-Tru tournamentquality tennis courts at your disposal. There’s a Tennis Pro Shop and USPTA staff on hand for private instruction. Club members also get access to a full fitness center with a schedule of classes, personal trainers and even physical therapy. Your workout can be as intense as you like with a range of free weights, elliptical machines, treadmills, an aerobics room and a Pilates studio among the offerings within the 13,065-square-foot health and fitness facility. There are separate locker rooms for men and women, too. 38 South Florida Living
You can reward your sporty self at the Club’s spa, with its steam rooms and body treatment offerings that cover everything you’d find at a fine resort facility--from facials and peels to luxurious massages by expert therapists and aestheticians. Golf Club membership keeps residents’ social calendars as packed as they prefer. And the Clubhouse is a favorite place to gather before or after a game, with dining options that include fine and casual settings. The Club hosts many events throughout the
year including wine dinners, lakeside parties and outings to local attractions. While Club membership is optional, many residents join to take advantage of golf and tennis as well as the active social life that the Club offers. There are many ways to stay active, however, outside of the Club’s organized facilities and programs. Jonathan’s Landing is a community of 27 villages, most with their own private pools where residents gather to swim laps, soak up the sunshine or spend time with visiting family members. The freedom to move around and exercise your walking and joggings legs in such pretty surrounds is another one of the appealing aspects of life at Jonathan’s Landing. From sunup to sundown—and often several hours on either side—you’ll see people strolling and pedaling along the community’s network of jogging and biking trails. Whether you’re entertaining visitors with an alfresco picnic or just seeking a little solo time in inviting public spaces, it’s a wonderful thing to be able to visit the community’s nature pavilion, butterfly garden, dog park, waterfront

The life aquatic is yours with marina access, kayaking and beautiful beaches to explore. park and children’s playground--all within the Jonathan’s Landing gates. Florida’s beautiful Atlantic coast is home to some of the country’s finest beaches and also some of the world’s best fishing, with easy access to the legendary angling waters of the Gulf Stream. And if you happen to be the boating type, Jonathan’s Landing is a community after your salty heart. The community’s onsite full service marina is an ideal spot to dock your boat. And no fixed bridges between the marina and the Atlantic Ocean make accessing the blue all the easier. The deep-water marina is designed to accommodate vessels ranging from 15 to 120 feet, so whether you’re in a skiff or a schooner there’s a slot with your name on it. There’s nothing quite like celebrating a day on the water with a casual waterfront meal at the marina while watching the boats bob in the sparkling South Florida sun. Nature lovers need not even board a boat to admire some of South Florida’s impressive native residents making their homes in the areas surrounding Jonathan’s Landing. Look for blue herons and cranes stalking fish in the shallows of the lakes and canals on property. And if you see a large dark shadow lumbering along, be sure to move in for a closer look—it just might be a West Indian manatee. The best way to explore the waterways around Jonathan’s Landing is via the stealthy glide of a canoe or kayak. The beauty of life in Jonathan’s Landing comes in the diversity of options when it comes to finding the perfect home for you and yours. The community’s 27 villages include a range of living options that include villas, condominiums, single family and custom estate homes that range from $150,000 to $5 million. Most properties are located on a golf course or waterway. A beautiful and secure lifestyle is standard across the board. During the Florida land boom of the 1920s, Addison Mizner’s Ritz-Carlton Cloister Inn was built and is known today as the Boca Raton Resort & Club, a Waldorf Astoria Resort. The development’s distinctive Mediterranean Revival style set the standard for much of Boca’s architecture. Boca Raton is also a shopper’s haven with the unique boutiques and designer shops of the Boca Town Center rounding out the many downtown options at Mizner Park that include alfresco cafes with international cuisine, cultural centers, cinemas, the Boca Raton Museum of Art and an amphitheater featuring live performances throughout the year. The birthplace of the IBM personal computer, Boca Raton has a concentration of technology, medical, financial, security and educational businesses. It is also known for its high quality public and private schools, as well as several colleges and universities to include Florida Atlantic University with 30,000 students and Lynn University (host of the final 2012 presidential debate). In addition to a successful business environment, Boca Raton is a community well known for its high quality of life and residents are proud of the city’s efforts to maintain and constantly improve the streets and natural areas. The beaches are beautifully preserved and pristine. Delray Beach Delray Beach has one of the most thriving downtowns in all of Palm Beach and was recently awarded “Best of the Road – Most Fun Small Town in America” by Rand McNally & USA Today. With close to 70 places for dining and nightlife and its own distinct arts district – all fringed by a sprawling white sand beach - Delray Beach is where the New York Times noted that “an influx of design-conscious establishments along East Atlantic Avenue has brought in a new energy: creative, stylish and yet attitude-free.” The town is considered a leading figure in Florida’s growing historic preservation movement and has designated several neighborhoods as historic districts. In the heart of downtown Delray Beach is Old School Square Cultural Arts Center - the multi-million dollar centerpiece of the historic downtown shopping district that houses a museum and theater as well as an outdoor entertainment pavilion. Jupiter Jupiter is rich in history and Florida lore, with the earliest known records of the Jupiter Inlet dating back to 1565. Its most identifiable landmark, the Jupiter Lighthouse, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jupiter enjoys a vibrant cultural life as the home of the Florida History Center & Museum, as well as several annual arts and entertainment festivals. Jupiter is also home to the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals spring training facilities. Society’s world headquarters, the Palm Beach Photographic Centre, Cason Cottage Museum and the Delray Beach Playhouse round out the town’s many cultural offerings. Of course, one of Delray Beach’s main attractions is the twomile long public beachfront with beaches for sunbathing, recreational events, swimming and other activities.
Exciting new developments include the Jupiter Riverwalk, a master planned multi-phased recreational corridor where visitors will be able to enjoy a scenic walk or bike ride and check out points of interest and attractions along the way. Over half of its 2.5 miles are already completed and accessible. Construction has also begun on Harbourside Place, a waterfront development featuring an entertainment plaza and outdoor amphitheatre, retail and office space, restaurants, hotel accommodations and marina slips. Palm Beach The Town of Palm Beach (also known as the Island of Palm Beach, not to be confused with Palm Beach County) is world-renowned for its beauty, quality of life and small-town character. Developed as a vacation destination at the beginning of the 20th Century by Henry Morrison Flagler, whose Florida East Coast Railway was largely responsible for developing the southern half of the state, the Town of Palm Beach has become synonymous with comfortable living. The nucleus of the community was established by Flagler’s two luxury resort hotels, the Royal Poinciana Hotel and The Breakers Hotel, which catered to the scions of “Gilded Age” families and their attendants. Marketed as a place where the wealthiest of the wealthy could retreat from the harsh winter climates of the north, Palm Beach soon became famous for the great houses these captains of industry would erect and, eventually, retire to. Palm Beach is noted for its social and cultural scene, to include the Society of the Four Arts with a campus complete with library, exhibition gallery, auditorium, as well as botanical and sculpture gardens. Worth Avenue is known as one of the most beautiful shopping venues in the country with its European sophistication, romantic vias and celebrated boutiques offering the best of designer fashion, art, antiques and furnishings. You’ll also find the lavish Mara-Lago estate, built in the 1920s by cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post on what now is believed to be the most valuable parcel of land in the state. Today, it’s an ultra-private club owned by Donald Trump.

From the waterfront to the west side, Clematis Street also hosts a yearround schedule of entertaining events including the seasonal Saturday Greenmarket, Thursday’s award-winning weekly concert series (“Clematis By Night”), the Palm Beach International Boat Show and SunFest - Florida’s largest waterfront music and art festival. CityPlace has over a hundred shops and restaurants and is the focal point of a flourishing arts and cultural community with the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts to the west and the Armory Art Center and Palm Beach County Convention Center, with its lineup of international art fairs, just across the street. The largest art museum in Florida, the Norton Museum of Art is within a halfmile and the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts – ranked among the top 100 high schools in the country – adds a creative, high-energy dimension to CityPlace life.

Jonathan’s Landing members proudly show off Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club recently held its 5th Annual Showcase Weekend. This exciting event, held in early November each year, was created to encourage current members to “showcase” their great Club to prospective new members and has always met with success. This year, twenty-five members hosted friends, family and colleagues November 8-10 for a wonderful weekend full of JL activities. On Friday the famous Welcome Back Party was held at the Village Clubhouse. Guests were able to mingle with 400+ current members while enjoying live music, delicious food and drink. On Saturday guests were welcomed to enjoy the second property – Jonathan’s Landing at Old Trail. Opposite of the Village, Old Trail boasts a pristine, natural setting, unlike most courses in South Florida. Guests and their hosts enjoyed playing in the JL Scramble on Old Trail’s Fazio Course prior to a reception featuring prizes and more appetizing food. Sunday brought another afternoon of golf on our Hills Course as guests were invited to participate in the day’s “Jents & Ladies” tournament. Throughout the weekend, guests were able to enjoy the ten Har-Tru tennis courts, the 13,000+ sq. ft. Fitness Center, and the JL Spa, complete with the new Nail Salon. Time permitting, some guests were able to play the Village Course as well, providing them the full experience of the 3 championship courses! Overall, the weekend turned out better than ever. Many members and guests commented on the fun time they had at Friday’s party, the excellent condition of the courses and the friendliness of the membership. Jonathan’s Landing has already welcomed some of the guests as new JLGC members!
