Dear Premier Club Members, HAPPY HOLIDAYS! I hope you are enjoying the season and taking advantage of all the Resort & Club has to offer at this festive time of year. We’re closing the book on the 2010s, so let’s look ahead. The next decade will be especially meaningful to us, as it marks the 100th anniversary of both the Resort and the City of Boca Raton. Over the past 100 years, the Resort and the city have evolved together in a symbiotic way, and our collective future has never been brighter. In the coming years and decades, we will continue in our role as a steward to the community, fostering strong partnerships with the city, businesses and universities and continuing our support for local not-for-profit organizations. Our new ownership is committed to building on our stature as one of the preeminent resorts and clubs in the nation. We have defined the Club experience of the 20th century, and we will continue to reshape and reimagine the Club experience well into the current century. We’re proud of all we do from an experiential standpoint, consistently delivering programming that’s both top quality and wide-ranging in scope. In recent years, we’ve introduced innovative programs in a wide variety of areas, from wellness to fashion to the performing arts. We’ve welcomed experts — chefs, singersongwriters, winemakers, and more — to join us as Artists in Residence, giving Members the opportunity to interact with and learn from the best of the best. I promise that we will continue to expand and deepen the Club experience, evolving with the times while preserving our unique spirit and heritage. As we wrap up another year, I’d like to express my gratitude to you, our wonderful Members. I’m honored to have served you in 2019, and I look forward to ringing in another decade together.

Building A Golf Fitness Program Whether you are a high-level competitive golfer or just looking to casually play with friends and co-workers, the goal of any golf fitness program is to move well, feel well while doing it and play to your potential. 50

HEALTH CLUB A strong foundation is paramount for golfers through functional strength training and mobilization/stabilization work based on one’s needs. I take golfers through a Functional Movement Screen and then, if needed, we will continue through a golf-specific movement screen by the Titleist Performance Institute. A strong foundation is an important and essential step for long-term speed changes and to help ensure golfers stay healthy while training. Assessments are crucial for starting any type of fitness program; if you’re not assessing, then you’re just guessing!

Become a Better Athlete After a strong foundation is built, the focus can then shift to making a golfer a better athlete. This is done through more dynamic movements, exercises involving coordination and an increase in strength training work. Keep in mind that “strength training” doesn’t necessarily mean lifting a lot of weights. Using pieces of equipment like the TRX and ViPR PRO are very valuable training tools that revolve around whole body integration. Take a look at someone like Brooks Koepka; in addition to golf he probably could have played football and baseball at very high levels. Oftentimes, simply becoming a better overall athlete and mover helps with becoming better at specific athletic endeavors.

Once a solid foundation and improved athleticism are met, then it’s time to focus on golf-specific exercises. This will depend on your overall goals, what your golf pro wants and what you are physically capable of doing. It’s a phase that most want to jump right into, but as you noticed, this is third phase and should not be rushed. I often use the analogy that you want to make sure when you build a house that it has a solid foundation and structure – otherwise the leaks, cracks, and problems will inevitably emerge if you try to get too fancy or specific too quickly.

A Team Effort Golf has three main components: the game itself, the mental game and your physical health. It’s important to find professionals who can help you in those fields. Having a cohesive team provides the best chance for a golfer to improve through moving better (strength coach), feeling better (chiropractor/ physical therapist) and playing better (golf pro).
