REMINDERS

Have you ever said, “Where do I put all my to-do lists, specifically lists like daily medicines, medical records, books I’ve read or need to read, etc.?” Well, I have the application for you! An app, REMINDERS, can be found on all Apple products. When you use Reminders on one device and you log into your other devices with the same log-in information, all the Reminders will be replicated across all your devices. You have the option to create folders and sort your Reminders into category lists. With the example below, if you were to click on my list of BOOKS READ, it would have a list of books that Judy and I have completed. If you were to click on the category STEVE’S DAILY MEDS, it would have a list of the meds I take on a daily basis. Going forward, you can make changes at will. To make a category in Reminders, it is as easy as clicking the plus sign and giving the category a title. As a reminder, I will be hosting an iPhone class on February 25th and we still have a few openings.

Happy New Year! Another “Wycliffe Winter” has arrived along with our “snowbird” and “snowflake” neighbors and friends. Our Club is humming on all cylinders and there is a new enthusiasm throughout as the Members see the many changes come to fruition. As we ring in the New Year, our Club is in the process of a major renovation. Phase One of “Plan B” continues and is due for completion this Spring. The Grande Dining Room was the first area completed and reopened on Thanksgiving serving over 900 members and guests, receiving nothing but rave reviews. Renovations to The Spa, Fitness Center and main Kitchen are currently in progress. While all of these projects are being accomplished, the day-to-day functioning of the Club goes on with minimum disruption to the membership. Phase Two of the renovation is scheduled to start in the Spring with completion in the Fall - just in time for next season. The revamped Driving Range, with its new irrigation system, opened on Friday, December 21st with much improved functionality and appearance. Between the Driving Range and new Practice Area, we will have a state-ofthe-art facility. The All-Purpose Court is under construction with completion very soon. It will include four Pickleball courts, a permanent basketball hoop and a hitting wall. The court will have a “comfort” surface over the concrete that will not interfere with play and will relieve pressure on our legs. Home sales have been brisk in 2018 with a record number of homes sold. This bodes well for the future of our Club. To many, the most important event of this past year was the overwhelming passing of “One Wycliffe”. The merger of the Club and the WCA has already provided savings to every member and increased savings are anticipated as we move forward. Not to mention, we will have a much more efficient business model. There’s no doubt that 2018 has been a very busy year for Wycliffe. We are undergoing changes benefiting all of our current members and making us more attractive to potential members who are considering joining our wonderful lifestyle. Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year,

Doug Lipman President

from the general manager

With a new year comes new excitement and opportunities. 2018 was a year of growth and 2019 will be a transformational year to see the fruits of all our labor come to life! I hope you are already enjoying the newly updated Grande Dining Room – this is just a small peak into what the following months have in store for all of us. At this time, I am happy to report that the project is on time and on budget. Many of you have been able to notice the modifications of the Spa and Fitness area. Once this area is completed and we can move away from the temporary locations, the rest of the project can begin on the upper West wing. The exterior construction for the Lobby and site work begins in January to expand the building, making room for the new Lobby Lounge and Bar. I hope you have been enjoying the renovation videos – here you’ve been able to see the new kitchen, the building expansions and the construction of the new Pastry Kitchen. Stay tuned for more video updates throughout the remainder of the project. It has been our pleasure to serve you and your families this holiday season. We welcomed over 1,048 registered guests over the course of two weeks and the positive vibe around the Club has been infectious! We look forward to continuing this excitement as the year goes on. I am excited for the months ahead and couldn’t be more proud of the future of Wycliffe! Happy New Year!

Sincerely, Rob Martin General Manager/COO

ne morning, I came across leftovers in the Kitchen and started to make different soups. This particular soup became a member favorite and has been a staple ever since!”

Chef Zoltan Bedecs INGREDIENTS

A WYCLIFFE MEMBER FAVORITE! And why not? There’s nothing more comforting than a warm bowl of cabbage soup. Ours conjures up memories of beloved, slow-cooked tastes of home, with a quick and easy recipe!

1 large onion, chopped

1½ tbsp brown sugar

2 carrots, chopped

¼ cup apple juice

3 stalks celery, chopped 1½ lbs green cabbage, chopped (about half a large head)

12/3 cups canned diced tomatoes with their juice (one 15-ounce can)

1 large potato, diced and peeled

1½ tsp caraway seed

7 cups chicken broth (low sodium)

Salt and pepper to taste

Step 1 Coat a medium soup pot with olive oil. Reduce the heat to moderately low. Add the onions, carrots, celery and cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables start to soften for about five minutes.

Step 2 Stir in the caraway seeds, cabbage, potatoes and chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the cabbage wilts for about five minutes. Stir in the tomatoes, brown sugar, salt, pepper and apple juice. Cover and simmer for 30-45 minutes (make sure potatoes are fork tender). Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.

Your perfect

adult playdate

!

By Kam Kuchta, Director of Tennis

Why not find a sport that will help

you live longer and makes your workout an adult playdate?

New research finds that people who combine exercise with their social lives are at an advantage over solitary exercise. In fact, research shows that the social interaction and physical activity involved in tennis is adding more years to your life! Tennis ranks at the top of the Mayo Clinic study compared to other sports and exercise activities.

Tennis likely took the top spot because it is intensely interactive. At every point of the game, you’re talking to your teammate or opponent. It is a very natural way to emotionally bond with people, plus you’re getting your exercise! We all know that any exercise is better than no exercise, but when an activity allows us to play and interact, it magnifies the benefits. You can’t play a racquet sport such as tennis, pickleball or badminton without feeling like a kid again. It’s just pure fun. So let’s get you out on our tennis and pickleball courts. It might just add years to your enjoyment of the game — and your life!

LIFT THE BALL ON YOUR GROUNDSTROKE In this issue, I wanted to share

the #1 tip for your topspin groundstrokes. In order to hit great groundstrokes and topspin, you will need to lift the K AM’S ball up over the net. To me, this is by far the most important KORNER skill to realize for almost every player. What do I mean by lifting the ball? By lifting the ball, your movement begins with the entire arm from low to high. I am certain that people would miss a lot less in the net, if you couldn’t look through the net. So remember, lift up low to high to get a nice arc on your groundstrokes.

YOU

PROGRAM By Donna Forte Director of Spa & Fitness

As we continue to improve our programming in the Fitness Center, Pilates and Group Studios, we are excited to announce our “New To You” program that we are launching this winter. This program was created with three goals in mind – to help members become familiar and comfortable with the amenities, to provide personalized interactions with all sections in the wellness area and to create a memorable experience for our members. The program begins with a few questions based on the information our members provided to us when they initially joined. The questions range from concerns or goals with their level of fitness, current program or activity involvement, to availability and preferences. These answers will assist our Coordinators in scheduling the four complimentary sessions – orientation, cardiovascular, selectorized equipment and functional/free weight trainings. A completed orientation form and client consultation card are also required prior to the first appointment. The Fitness Specialists will engage the members on a journey through every part of our facility, not only focusing on areas that were of concern to the members, but also providing new technologies in training sessions. By the end of the four sessions, our members will feel more confident in the facility and have developed a relationship with a Fitness Specialist – someone they can trust and is truly concerned about their overall lifestyle, health and well-being. Along with this program, we are excited to announce that CoreAlign will be available in our Pilates Studio. What is CoreAlign, you might ask? It’s an addition to our studio that integrates core training, upper and lower body strengthening, warm-up, cool down and stretching exercises. Many of the exercises are performed while standing, therefore improving posture, gait and core training. This unique training tool was developed by physical therapist, Jonathan Hoffman, and works effectively with men and women of all ages and fitness levels.

FOR US SOUTH FLORIDIANS, chipped manicures from that bitter winter weather seem far and few between, as our climate is not cold like many other locations. However, if you’re anything like me and still can’t shake the “no white after Labor Day because I’m from New England” rule, this is the perfect reason to start the season of winter with some new flair. Most of us will relate a time of year to colors or styles of clothing and the same is true for manicures - dark shades for fall and winter, light shades for spring and summer. This winter season, it’s time to switch it up in the most major way and embrace the power of white polish. With our often all-black winter wardrobes, keeping our fingers pale is an unexpectedly perfect choice. In order to keep you styling this winter season, we researched some of the best winter white shades and have them available in The Spa.

OPI Nail Polish, I Cannoli Wear OPI – this gorgeous grayishwhite is the perfect combination of snow and cement for day and night wear. As with any application of polish to a natural nail, follow up every other day with a topcoat to avoid chipping. Essie Nail Polish, Blanc – commonly used for our french manicures, this opaque white shade flows onto the nail like liquid paper and, though the first coat tends to be a little transparent, by the second coat your nails will be looking like absolute perfection! Gelish Soak Off Gel Polish, I’m Drawing a Blanco – this bright white is perfect for winter traveling to warm destinations, as it compliments that perfect sun-kissed tan! As a gel polish application, more time may be required for this service. OPI Nail Polish, Snow Glad I Met You - just as white jeans and white shoes can be quite controversial after Labor Day, this too may come as a perplexing suggestion at first. Once you see this creamy, warm white, you’ll realize why it’s the perfect winter neutral. Zoya Nail Polish, Genesis – this crystalline white with a micronized metallic pearl finish is designed to look like micro-fine diamond dust! As an all-natural polish collection, we recommend using Zoya base and top coats to maintain this festive color.

The Process By Ethan Means Assistant Golf Professional

TIP •••

I have seen many people, even PGA Professionals, have a 10-15 yard chip shot and go straight for the sand wedge or lob wedge. There is more margin of error chipping with a wedge than with an 8 iron or 7 iron when you are chipping from the front of the green with a lot of room between you and the hole. However, when you have to hit over sand or a hill and do not have a lot of green between you and the hole, selecting a higher lofted club like a wedge will give you a higher chance of getting the ball closer to the hole. I have listed a series of steps below on how to select the necessary club needed for each shot and how to execute it.

PICK A LANDING AREA TO GET THE BALL TO THE HOLE. Walking up to the green to notice how the green is sloped will help you see where you need to land the ball and how much the ball will roll out. A lower shot like a 7 iron will roll out more than a higher shot with a wedge.

❸ CHOOSE THE CLUB TO HIT YOUR LANDING SPOT. Now that you have a landing area in mind and you know if you want to play a higher or lower shot, you can choose a club that has the best chance of hitting your landing and getting the ball as close as possible to the hole.

House Beautiful

Winter2019 Homeowners Ron Sharpe & Nancy Malchi 4841 Exeter Estate Lane

When we renovated our home we wanted a more open space for gatherings with family and friends as well as more bedrooms for our children, grandchildren and guests when they visit. We are “people, people” which made those updates a top priority for us throughout the project. We purchased our home based on the layout in which we kept while making improvements to fit our needs.

BEFORE

To make our new home have a more modern and warm feel, we gutted the house from stud to stud, ceiling to floor. We decided to add a fourth bedroom in the place of the dining room as we felt it was not in the right place. We opened up the kitchen and completely re-did the master bath and closet. We couldn’t be happier with our completed project.

Winter

FEATU R E

By Leslie Jay-Gould Editor in Chief

There are things I will miss: the excitement of the first snowfall when the world looks pure; the black and white landscape of leafless trees and water coursing through rocky streams; the tiny winter birds – waxwings and titmice – pecking at branches of the weeping cherry tree outside

my window.

I will not miss mice wintering in our crawl space, scurrying into the kitchen late at night searching for our crumbs. Nor will I miss drafts seeping through poorly insulated walls causing me to have cold feet and wear enough layers inside to make me think I am outside. So we are heading to Florida where the sun is brighter; the sky, bluer; and the cumulus clouds puffier and whiter. In Florida I am like a kid when I visit nature preserves where colorful birds and alligators live free of human predators. White egrets and ibises are found wherever there is grass, their beaks piercing the soil looking for grubs and worms. Palm trees – some four or five stories high and others short and squat – are everywhere. Bougainvillea with magenta blossoms and yellow, red and pink hibiscus flourish. The tree next to our patio has delicate red blooms.
