Ascension in the New Year Welcome to 2013! While the Mayan Calendar indicated December as the end of the world, I interpret it as the end of our old soul contracts and the beginning of a new focus for life on earth.

It helps to have a focus of unconditional love and truth within yourself to hold onto as your body, soul and the world around you transform. There is a lot of surrender and trust needed during this process and you will want it to go as easily as it can.

Are You a New Years Baby?

Resolutions made in the dwindling hours of a New Years Eve party often stay in our consciousness for days, even months –until we either do something about them or they fade away. When you get home and look in the mirror are you reminded of a brand new baby, slightly pudgy and wrinkledexcept you are not as apt to say, “Oh how cute” because that baby is YOU? Perhaps this look in the mirror will give you the eye-opening push to say, “I’m really going to do something this time!” But what often follows this is wondering what will be different this time. If this isn’t your first attempt to make a change, and you weren’t successful the first time around, it’s hard to have the enthusiasm to work hard and sacrifice again. So, what can you do differently?

Let’s take a look. An understanding of how the body works can help tremendously in achieving your goals.

The first and most important thing to recognize is that hidden within our enthusiasm to get moving on our goals is the demon of failure - due to wanting to be able to do everything all at once. In other words, you have to crawl before you can walk. In the same way, when you start an exercise regiment, it helps to work on a gradient.

For example, if we think of it in terms of going up a distance of say 50 feet, can you start at zero and jump up 50 feet into the air? Of course not, but

if we walk up the side of a hill, we can ascend 50 feet in a reasonable fashion. In exercise, we create a plan of action of what we want to be able to do, and then set up a schedule that incrementally increases the level of activity at a reasonable rate.

All successful exercise programs are preceded by a regiment of proper stretching which turns on your body’s natural protective mechanisms. A little basic body science helps to illustrate this. Since muscle tissue can’t attach directly to bone as muscle, it transforms at the ends of the muscle into a tissue, called tendons. Tendons have properties of both bone and muscle so they can form the attachment of muscle to bone.

The body will always stack as much incredible ability into as little space as possible, which it does in the tendon.

Within the tendon are specialized cells called tendon stretch receptors.

These cells have the ability to monitor the amount of pull or stretch on the muscle and bone so to keep track of when you over-utilize the muscle to point where muscle and or bone could become damaged. These cells actually have the ability to diminish the nerve signal to reduce the force exerted by the muscle so we do not damage the body.

Most people do not realize that if our muscle contracts as fully as it is able in an uncontrolled manner, it has the capacity to crush our bones. While it’s one thing to read about such things in the scientific literature, I’ve had the occasion to witness something similar. Awhile ago, I had an epileptic patient that went off his special ketogenic diet, which is a high fat diet designed to help prevent seizures in epileptic patients. After having gone off the diet that had previously protected him, he had a grand mall seizure. In the course of his seizure, he broke the large bone in his upper arm in four places without slamming his body into any other objects. This is an illustration of how powerful your muscles are.

Muscles out of control will hurt you. The point here is that you must stretch prior to exercise to avoid injury from exercising. There are some who believe that if they start their exercise regiment slowly it will pass for a warm up stretch, but I disagree. There are specific stretches that stretch the core muscles and ligaments to help protect you. By doing these each day, I’ve found that I not only protect myself from common injuries that can afflict an active person but I also get about 50% more accomplished in a day.

The rule of thumb here is that you do these stretching exercises when you first get out of bed in the morning.

When you stretch this way, you are protected right from the start of your day. But if more than 15 minutes has gone by before continuing the rest of your exercise program, you should do at least half as many stretches again.

which are activated by stretching will turn off after about 15 minutes of non-use. That is why re-stretching to turn on your tendon stretch receptors after a period of regular non physical activity is vital to your protection.

There is a lot of inaccurate data out there on the subject of stretching. The bottom line is that those who correctly stretch prior to any physical activity tend not to hurt themselves. And if you’re not injured in the process of doing something, your tendency is to do more of it, not less of it. This will help you achieve your goals.

So now you have it, a road map to make the New Years baby in your mirror grow up to be that fit and attractive person that you want to see in the mirror. As Michaelangelo responded when asked how he created such beautiful statues, “I just remove everything that is not the statue and there it is.” So, there you are! Happy 2013!

Is Your Mind On Board With Your 2013 Resolution?

The answer may well be because although you made a conscious decision to alter your behavior, the subconscious part of your mind was not involved in the decision, or it did not accept your idea. subconscious mind is working with you and not blocking your success.

How can you turn your subconscious mind into an ally rather than a powerful force that impedes success? One very effective method is with the use of hypnosis. Despite many myths about hypnosis, it does indeed work, and for changing habits, it has been very successful. There are now a great many research articles that attest to the fact that hypnosis does work. Hypnosis has helped people quit smoking, lose weight, overcome fears, reduce stress, and alleviate pain.

Unfortunately, many people still believe some of the myths about hypnosis. They may feel the individual is under the control of the hypnotist.

This is entirely false. The individual is aware of what is being said, and will come out of trance if anything were asked that went against his or her values or moral beliefs. Another fear is that if the person is in trance and something was to happen to the hypnotherapist, the individual might remain in trance indefinitely. This too is untrue. If something did happen to the hypnotherapist and he or she was not able to bring the individual out of trance, the person would notice that no one was talking and would either come out of trance on his or her own, or would doze off for a short period and then wake up in his or her normal state.

When in a hypnotic state, people are more relaxed, their attention is more focused, and their subconscious mind is more receptive to the positive messages or affirmations. During hypnosis, the critical faculty of the mind can be bypassed and the messages can go directly to the subconscious. In other words, the “critic” will not block the positive suggestions. Once the subconscious believes the suggestions, it is much easier to change the behavior. Of course if the person does not really want to change the behavior,

the hypnosis will not be successful. The desire to change is a key component for success.

Think about how much healthier you would be if you quit smoking or lost weight. Not only could you save money by eliminating these habits, you could actually extend your life. How much is it worth to have a longer healthier and happier life? You can’t put a price on that. Through hypnosis, these goals can be realized.

Hypnosis is not the only way to change these habits. There are other methods that will work. But the beauty of hypnosis is that it is not only effective, but it can bring about the change in a relatively short period of time. A habit such as smoking, for example, can be eliminated in just one or two sessions. Why suffer any longer than you need to? What Would You Do? God has a way of allowing us to be in the right place at the right time.

I was walking down a dimly lit street late one evening when I heard muffled screams coming from behind a clump of bushes. Alarmed, I slowed down to listen, and panicked when I realized that what I was hearing were the unmistakable sounds of a struggle: heavy grunting, frantic scuffling, and tearing of fabric.

Only yards from where I stood, a woman was being attacked.

Should I get involved? I was frightened for my own safety, and cursed myself for having suddenly decided to take a new route home that night. What if I became another statistic? Shouldn’t I just run to the nearest phone and call the police?

Although it seemed an eternity, the deliberations in my head had taken only seconds, but already the girl’s cries were growing weaker. I knew I had to act fast. How could I walk away from this? No, I finally resolved, I could not turn my back on the fate of this unknown woman, even if it meant risking my own life.

I am not a brave man, nor am I athletic. I don’t know where I found the moral courage and physical strength---but once I had finally resolved to help the girl, I became strangely transformed. I ran behind the bushes and pulled the assailant off the woman.

Grappling, we fell to the ground, where we wrestled for a few minutes until the attacker jumped up and escaped.

Panting hard, I scrambled upright and approached the girl, who was crouched behind a tree, sobbing.

In the darkness, I could barely see her outline, but I could certainly sense her trembling shock. Not wanting to frighten her further, I at first spoke to her from a distance.

“It’s OK,” I said soothingly. “The man ran away.

You’re safe now.” There was a long pause and then I heard the words, uttered in wonder, in amazement.

“Dad, is that you?” And then, from behind the tree, stepped my youngest daughter, Katherine.

Acquaintance and Friend There is a difference between being an acquaintance and being a friend. An acquaintance is someone whose name you know, who you see every now and then, who you probably have something in common with and who you feel comfortable around.

It’s a person that you can invite to your home and share things with. But they are people who you don’t share your life with, whose actions sometimes you don’t understand because you don’t know enough about them.

On the other hand, a friend is someone you love. Not that you are “in love” with them, but you care about them and you think about them when they are not there. The people you are reminded of when you see something they might like, and you know this because you know them so well. They are the people whose pictures you have and whose faces are in your head regardless.

Friends are the people you feel safe around because you know they care about you. They call just to see how you are doing, because a friend doesn’t need an excuse. They tell you the truth, the first time, and you do the same.

You know that if you have a problem, they are there to listen.

Friends are the people who won’t laugh at you or hurt you, and if they do hurt you they try hard to make it up to you. They’re the people you love, regardless of whether you realize it.

Friends are the people you cried with when you got rejected from colleges and during the last song at the prom and at graduation. They are the people that when you hug them, you don’t think about how long to hug and who’s going to be the first one to let go.

Maybe they are the people that hold the rings at your wedding, or maybe they are the people who give you away at your wedding, or maybe they are the people you marry. Maybe they are the people who cry at your wedding because they are happy or because they are proud.

They are the people who stop you from making mistakes and help you when you do. They are are the people whose hand you can hold, or you can hug or give them a kiss and not have it be awkward because they understand the things you do and they love you for them.

They stick with you and stand by you. They hold your hand. They watch you live and you watch them live and you learn from them. Your life is not the same without them.

Spiritual Horoscopes Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) – Happy birthday Capricorn! This will be a powerful time for visualizing goals and setting intentions. In meditation, visualize what you want to accomplish in any area of your life. Talk aloud about your concepts so they become more real to you. Write out affirmations as if they have already happened to increase their power. By February, some goals will start to manifest!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) – Don’t get frustrated if things seem slow or irritating at work. Quiet reflection and affirmations during meditation will do more than complaining about situations, or trying to push ahead through blocks. Let your spiritual vision pave the road of harmony. Take gentle actions later this month, when you don’t feel so tense. Use this same plan if having family or home drama!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) – Even though it’s a new year, the January energy is about letting go of disappointments and old anger from the past two years. Meditate to forgive yourself and others for things that didn’t work out. Cleanse your heart because those old hopes and desires don’t even fit who you are today! You’ll be able to set new goals about work, relationships, and health – that have to do with the “current you.” February will bring results and success!

Aries (March 21 – April 19) – Be careful about jumping to conclusions about colleagues. You might feel that a work buddy has betrayed you, when it’s just about egos temporarily clashing.

Don’t neglect meditation time, since that’s when you can let off spiritual steam and re-center! By late January,

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) – Be patient about frustrations at work and in your marriage/partnership. It’s easy to dwell on the negative right now.

Meditate on gratitude about these troubled areas of your life. Make a written list! This will calm your ego and allow your intuition to let you know if there are changes to make, or boundaries to draw. When you’re in your highest consciousness, you won’t brood sullenly – or alternatively, you won’t lash out. You’ll be able to forgive, move on, and make things work harmoniously in a fairly effortless way.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20) – Your lesson this month is waiting patiently for results of your actions. When you meditate, release expectations of perfect bliss. Look for subtle changes, like more consistent moods and fewer emotional reactions. Listen for little hints of intuition and follow the promptings. In relationships, take risks of trust by opening up more -- but allow time to let deeper intimacy develop. Don’t shut down if intense and immediate shifts don’t happen. Breathe and allow life to unfold!

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) – You’re so sensitive to rejection! Meditate to release past hurts from all sorts of people. When bonds with others are moving to a deeper level, old fears of abandonment arise because the risk level is increasing. By clearing out old pain, you won’t automatically grasp on to the anxiety that tells you rejection is coming. Risk isn’t always followed

Inward Journey The ancient Sanskrit word for circle is Mandala. Mandala art has been used for millennia. It is a path to self-expression, self-awareness and personal growth. It can be a journey to discover the center within us and beyond. One can meditate on an existing mandala or we can create our own. There are a number of sources out there if you prefer to use ready made mandalas.

Nature has also provided us with mandalas, snowflakes, flowers, the rings in a cut tree, snails and spider webs are some examples.

When creating your own it can be a tool for pulling scattered aspects of your life together, leading to wholeness and enlightenment. When creating one, remember it is a circular journey that can start and end in the center. One is drawn to the center. To draw one it is good to start with a circle. You can trace a plate or use a compass. Some kind of straight edge is useful and a pencil, and colored pencils, crayons or paint if you want color in your mandala. You can simulate drawing with light. This is easily done by working on a piece of black paper and using opaque media. Gel pens and pastels are good for this purpose. Your mandala doesn’t have to look professional. It is your journey, it is for you.

Even more common infections come from kissing, holding hands, sharing eating utensils and of course, sexual contact. It’s Not What You Eat

At the start of every New Year, goals are set and resolutions are made to lose weight, eat better, exercise more, and to start new habits and routines. Within a short time most of these resolutions have been abandoned due to lack of results, or failure to stick with the new activity. While diet is important, what is metabolized and utilized is key. Without proper utilization of nutrients, weight does not come off, diet changes are ineffective, and you become disillusioned.

In order to metabolize the foods eaten, a working digestive system is essential. The pancreas makes enzymes that break down all carbohydrates into sugars.

Carbohydrates are eaten in the form of breads, pasta, grains, cookies, candy, fruit and vegetables. As the body ages, the pancreatic output of enzymes decreases by 12% each decade starting at age 30.

By age 50 pancreatic enzyme production is down by 25%. This is one of the reasons why digestive issues start around age 30.

Enzymes are also present in the food we eat, if raw foods are eaten. Years ago, people ate a lot more raw foods than we do today. Whenever food is cooked or processed, the digestive enzymes are destroyed. Anyone eating a diet of mostly cooked or processed foods should take an enzyme/ probiotic supplement to aid digestion.

The excess acid production often results in heartburn or acid reflux. Without fuel, the body goes into starvation mode, releasing cortisol.

Excessive cardio workouts or exercise routines are also the cause of unwanted cortisol production and catabolic muscle breakdown. You want to burn stored body fat, not muscles, for calories. Without this understanding, people give up their goals to lose weight and exercise.

To successfully burn fat you need a delicate balance in your routine. Make sure you have optimal digestive function, with the right amount of digestive enzymes and probiotics so that your body can easily lose weight by burning fat. Eating a diet rich in raw foods, alkaline fresh fruits and vegetables, and eating frequently will aid with weight loss. I WILL CHOOSE GENTLE Not sure about a lot these days, but I am very sure about the need for all of us to be a bit more gentle.

Especially with ourselves.

Everywhere I look and with all the people I counsel... there seems to be a sad and rampant epidemic of harshness towards self. Why are we so hard on ourselves?

It is a widespread disease causing great sadness and is happening around us as much as death.

In my work with clients, I continue to connect with amazing and beautiful people who are beating themselves up for things they feel, need, want, desire,... and even illnesses or bad breaks they have encountered. Of course, I believe in “selfresponsibility,” but this self blame gig has gone a little too far. Yes we should look in the mirror to improve all that is not going well in our lives.

And, I am certain that personal condemnation and judgment are not the answer either!

Why are we so judgmental? We are all losing loved ones, wishing desperately we had lost weight instead. We are all criticizing ourselves internally, wishing others didn’t criticize us.

This lack of self-esteem rap runs deep... and it seems to me that we would all be a lot more peaceful if we focused on gentleness and selfresponsibility (what can I do to make it better?) rather than blame (what did I do wrong to cause this? and should I punish myself too?) The judging of right/ wrong, black/ white, good/ bad, seem to creep into our thoughts and create such a negative, vicious cycle in our lives, troubling our core, our relationships and our view of the world. We take to heart others’ negative opinions of us and allow that to taint our view of ourselves. We are left with not trusting ourselves ~ when self trust is what we need and must value most.

We all need a breather from this! We all need understanding. We all want to be understood.

Life is painful and rough enough sometimes.

For “me” ... I will choose to be more gentle with myself. And; that will probably help me be more gentle with “you.”

I very quietly confided to my best friend that I was having an affair. She turned to me and asked, ‘Are you having it catered’?

Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, ‘how old was your husband?’

‘98,’ she replied: ‘Two years older than me’. ‘So you’re 96,’ the undertaker commented. She responded, ‘Hardly worth going home, is it?’

Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old woman: ‘And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?’ the reporter asked. She simply replied, ‘No peer pressure.’

I’ve sure gotten old! I’ve had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes, I’m half blind, can’t hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can’t remember if I’m 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver’s license.

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and started exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour but, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

An elderly woman decided to prepare her will and told her preacher she had two final requests. First, she wanted to be cremated, and second, she wanted her ashes scattered over Wal-Mart. ‘Wal-Mart?’ the preacher exclaimed. ‘Why Wal-Mart?’ ‘Then I’ll be sure my daughters visit me twice a week’ My memory’s not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory’s not as sharp as it used to be.

It’s scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker.

THE SENILITY PRAYER: Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Food of the Month - Kasha -

Kasha Tofu Patties

Kasha, also known as buckwheat, is the signature grain of winter. It is probably the most unknown and underrated of the whole grains.

Having a creamy texture and a unique robust flavor, it can be very satisfying when used in a hearty winter meal. It is a staple food in the very cold Siberia, where it originated. Even though it has ‘wheat’ in its name, it is not in the wheat family and is completely gluten free.

Containing the bioflavonoid rutin makes it medicinal for the capillaries and blood vessels, thus increasing circulation to the hands and feet. In Oriental medicine, it is said to feed and nurture the kidneys, adrenals, and reproductive organs.

Some other wonderful things about kasha: •

high proportions of all eight essential amino acids

•

contains almost the entire range of B-complex vitamins

•

100% more calcium than other grains

•

stabilizes blood sugar levels

You will have a couple of options when buying kasha. The toasted variety has been toasted already. It has a nutty taste and cooks quicker than the untoasted.

Kasha that is not toasted is sometimes called ‘raw’.

Both are very delicious and can be used to make a morning porridge, casseroles, soups, stir fries, and patties like the ones in my recipe.

Kasha that is ground into flour is then called buckwheat, which makes great pancakes. The next time you are at the store pick some up and try it--it will help keep you warm during the cold winter months!

1 cup kasha 2 cups water 1/2 lb. firm organic tofu 1/4 onion 1 cup chopped mushrooms 1/2 cup tightly packed parsley 1/4 cup arrowroot 3 T. tamari 2 T. tahini 1 tsp. sea salt 1 tsp. paprika 1/2 tsp. cumin 1/4 tsp. curry 1/4 cup sesame seeds Put kasha and water in a pot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer, cover and cook for 20 minutes until all water has been absorbed. Put in a food processor the rest of the ingredients, except the sesame seeds. Puree until smooth. In a mixing bowl, put the kasha, tofu mixture and sesame seeds. Mix all together. Form into patties. Heat some canola oil in a pan and fry the patties until browned on each side. Serve warm. Patties can be used as a veggie burger also.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF PRAYER Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night could be a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change correctly could be a worried 19year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job), could be a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slowly through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us but to all humanity.

Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive and patience and empathetic and loving.

Meaningful Moments Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. It was a cowboy’s life, a life for someone who wanted no boss. What I didn’t realize was that it was also a ministry. Because I drove the night shift, my cab became a moving confessional.

Passengers climbed in, sat behind me in total anonymity, and told me about their lives. I encountered people whose lives amazed me and made me laugh and weep. But none touched me more than a woman I picked up late one August night. I responded to a call from a small brick four-plex in a quiet part of town. I assumed I was being sent to pick up some partiers, or someone who had just had a fight with a lover, or a worker heading to an early shift at some factory in the industrial part of town.

When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window. Under these circumstances, many drivers would just honk once or twice, wait a minute, and then drive away. But I had seen too many poor people who depended on taxis as their only means of transportation. Unless a situation smelled of danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needed my assistance, I reasoned to myself. So I walked to the door and knocked.

“Just a minute,” answered a frail, elderly voice.

I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940’s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the 30

furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

“Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said.

I took the suitcase to the cab, and then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness.

“It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”

“Oh, you’re such a good boy,” she said.

When we got in the cab, she gave me an address, then asked, “Could you drive through downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered quickly.

“Oh, I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice.”

I looked in the rearview mirror. Her eyes were glistening.

“I don’t have any family left,” she continued. “The doctor says I don’t have very long.”

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. “What route would you like me to take?” I asked.

For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she’d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, “I’m tired.

Let’s go now.”

We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.

Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were attentive, watching her every move.

They must have been expecting her.

I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.

“How much do I owe you?” she asked, reaching into her purse.

“Nothing,” I said.

“You have to make a living,” she answered.

“There are other passengers,” I responded.

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly.

“You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said. “Thank you, Dear.”

I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.

I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk.

What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?

On a quick review, I don’t think that I have done very many more important things in my life. We’re conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware - beautifully wrapped in what others may consider small ones.

The Penny

that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband’s employer’s home.

My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house.

A smile crept across the man’s face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see.

She had seen many pennies before!

What was the point of this?

The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband’s employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband.

He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him.

There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts.

Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny.

He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd!

What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her.

Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned

“Look at it.” He said. “Read what it says.”

She read the words “United States of America.”

“No, not that; read further.”

“One cent?”

“No, keep reading.”

“In God we Trust?”

“Yes!” “And?” “And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin.

Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold.

I think it is God’s way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk.

I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, “In God We Trust,” and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message.

It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient...

Healing the Lost Relationship with Mother Perhaps the most important day in the life of every individual is the day that he or she was born. According to Bert Hellinger, the creator of Family Constellations, events surrounding birth and the time shortly thereafter, can have a lasting impact not only on the individual’s developing personality, and also on the path he or she chooses in life—and even whether or not that person will live a truly successful life. It is important to remember, however, that Hellinger reminds us that early traumatic events can be addressed and resolved in Systemic Family Constellations.

Many things can go wrong during a delivery, or with events immediately following birth, that can result is what Hellinger calls an “interrupted reaching out”—a loss of connection or attachment with mother. For example, if the delivery is a difficult one—maybe forceps are required to “pull” the baby out—this can result in the infant’s pulling away— withdrawing from mother’s love. It’s as if that tiny infant has the cognitive ability to say something like, “How can I trust this person who allowed such a trauma to happen to me?”

Or perhaps the baby is born prematurely, or has some kind of birth

defect, and the infant is taken away from mother and placed alone is an incubator—where it is incessantly poked with needles and tubes. Maybe that baby is sent away from its mother and given to a loving adoptive family—but that infant nevertheless experiences the trauma of being taken from its mother, and this huge loss is an “interrupted reaching out” experience.

Sometimes the mother is ill and someone else must take over the nurturing of that young child, but even the most loving substitute is experienced by that baby as a loss of mom. And if the baby is so ill that hospitalization is required, a sense of loss of mother is the result—an “interrupted reaching out.”

Hellinger maintains that this “interrupted reaching out” is internalized by that child as a separation, or loss of mother, and results in trauma that can last a lifetime if left unaddressed.

He points out that these early traumatic events can lead to unfortunate, albeit unconscious, conclusions for the child, resulting in similarly unfortunate decisions. The child may decide to give up, to remain alone, to keep a distance not only from mother, but also from others as well. Systemic Family Constellations provides a venue for healing these early traumas by allowing the individual to reunite with mother. In a constellation, other participants in a workshop can be used as representatives for both the individual who has experienced this “interrupted reaching out” very early in life and is suffering from distance from mother and others as well. The facilitator using short appropriate phrases can bring the lost connection back to the individual by bringing the constellation to resolution so that healing the lost connection between the individual and the most important person in his or her life—mother!

Often individuals are resistant to “making up” with mom, because they are angry, or don’t believe it will help—but once the lost connection is established, this transformational experience can result in healing of not only the relationship with mother, whether she is alive or dead, or even with the unknown birth mother, but relationships with others will also begin to be healed, and successes will begin to replace failures.

Be the Love you are -- with You! Now that we’ve made our New Year resolutions, how do we keep them? Our world is in a higher vibration than ever before which supports our spiritual, emotional, mental and physical growth. The time is now for us in unity to achieve our desires. Yet, we seem to follow the same path seemingly hardwired by our biocomputer (brain) since a young age. We appear stuck.

Perhaps it is fear of the unknown, fear of our own greatness.

Many times my clients will start successfully attaining small steps towards their goals, feel good about themselves, and yet stop doing the things which are creating positive flow in their lives, leading to realizing their connection with Divine Source/God. They sometimes go back to their old habit of being--some might get complacent, feeling there is no more to do to grow, and some are just happy where they’re at. Whatever the reason, we are in this plane to always grow towards transformation, towards selfactualization and ascension. It is the reason we are here, forging unity with God/Source. No one is separate from God/Source, Love. Somewhere along the way, we started pretending we were separate and are finding our way back.

There might be a pattern, a limited belief or story of “fear of failure”, where there is self-sabotage by holding ourselves back from being the greatness we truly are, our knowing of our own divinity as Love. We’ve been taught that there is fear in the unknown and to avoid the fear, the unknown, at any cost. Usually, the cost is to our own True Self and unity with Divine Source/ God. Fear and excitement are the same emotional energy--it’s just that with fear we expect the worst to happen, and with excitement we expect something positive to occur.

Be the love you are -- with you. It is often so easy to forgive others; treat yourself with the same love and acceptance, the same forgiving and teaching. We can make a mistake, decide how we’ll choose to handle a situation the next time... there is often a next time... and, when we are mindful, we change the outcome of the situation next time around, and/or have more compassion, love for others.

Our positive feelings further our connection with Divine Source/God/ Love. How about identifying the fear and choosing to change its label to excitement? This encourages us to take the steps towards fulfilling our dreams; which takes us closer to realizing our unity with Divine Source. It brings us further along on our life’s journey, supporting humanity’s greatness and increasing the world’s vibration.

Sometimes we find ourselves stepping backwards into our old programming and giving up. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. Humans make mistakes. Mistakes are often our best learning devices. When clients repeat the same mistakes they have done before (that old biocomputer programming), they are often very hard and unforgiving of themselves. This keeps them trapped in the old program of guilt. The Law of Attraction then gives them more experiences where they can feel guilt. Guilt stops us from feeling our connection with our Higher Self and Source/God as effectively as any road block.

Guilt is not real according to the Course in Miracles. Nothing here is real nor eternal except for our essence and connection with Source/God. So go ahead! Make mistakes!

It’s all good. It’s all temporary and unreal. We are just here to remember our own divinity, realizing our union with God/Source.

Be gentle and loving with yourself.

We’ve all been there. We are all in this experience together, and when one learns and transforms, the vibration spreads and others get it. Like laughter. Ever notice how expansive laughter is? Laughter is contagious.

It is an experience we’ve all had. We are connected, so everyone has the opportunity to vibrationally learn from our experiences, transform from our transformation and ascend from our ascension. And, we can learn from others. We are connected on a vibrational and spiritual level.

So, go ahead and step forward with your goals. Follow your heart. Be mindful of each step, and if you identify fear, create excitement. Make a mistake, or get off your path, speak with Spirit.

Ask for divine guidance. Give yourself permission to be happy. Give yourself permission to be compassionate and loving with yourself.

Shine your divine light and let your true self be seen. Allow your greatness to shine forth and be the love and joy you are. Experience the greatness within you that’s waiting to be seen.

A Gift of Love “Can I see my baby?” the happy new mother asked. When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears. Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect.

It was only his appearance that was marred. When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks.

He blurted out the tragedy. “A boy, a big boy...called me a freak.”

He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that.

He developed a gift, a talent for literature and music. “But you might mingle with other young people,” his mother reproved him, but felt a kindness in her heart.

The boy’s father had a session with the family physician. Could nothing

be done? “I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured” the doctor decided.

Whereupon the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man. Two years went by. Then, “You are going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears you need. But it’s a secret” said the father.

The operation was a brilliant success, and a new person emerged.

His talents blossomed into genius, and school and college became a series of triumphs. Later he married and entered the diplomatic service.

“But I must know!” He urged his father. “Who gave so much for me?

I could never do enough for him.”

“I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know...not yet.”

The years kept their profound secret, but the day did come . . . one of the darkest days that ever pass through a son. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket. Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish-

Living an Abundant Life Living an abundant life requires you to be kind to yourself. You are the center of your own universe, meaning the center is everywhere and not in one place. 1. Let go of the past and your regrets. You forget that life has always been happening for your good. Life events were initiations into awakening to your divinity. Life is happening for you, not against you. When you are triggered (angry, sad, fearful) it is only to show you your limitations to loving yourself. Be willing to see things differently and receive a new understanding of yourself and life.

2. You block your needs from being met. You say things like, “I shouldn’t need that,” or “I should know this,” or “I can do it on my own.” The Ego wants you to live in isolation; this keeps you separate from God-Love. Take the risk of asking for help, reach out, and receive. All your needs will be met, IF you let it in. Be patient with your growth and let yourself have encouragement, advice, or nurturing the needs of your heart. Ask for help from God, Angels and people. “You don’t ask for too much, you ask for too little.” (Course in Miracles) 3. You think you have to make it happen. Your good is already here. Everything is already created in the one mind of Creation. Line up with all the abundance that is waiting for you, through your inner work. Focus on your internal alignment with love, joy, and prosperity and THEN take action. Ask yourself, “What would it feel like to feel prosperous right now?” Let yourself feel it. Receive the energetic alignment so that you can attune to the goodness that is already there.

4. Stop letting conditions and people define you. Set your intent for the day and then let go. Your intent is like the rudder of the boat. The rudder, like your intent, drives the direction and actions. Strongly set your intent and let the winds and waters of Creation carry you. I.ntentional S.urrender moves you to the I.S.. Love Is. God Is. Prosperity Is. All the qualities of God are within. Love, prosperity, and beauty are within you. Water these qualities with your attention. For example, meditate on the abundance of pine needles on a tree and let yourself feel that prosperity as you.

Know you can only resonate with what is already within.

Breathe in the trees example and let it attune you to your innate prosperity.

Extremes of Spirit and Shadow Bipolar disorder is a harrowing rollercoaster ride whether you are at the heights of its exuberance and bizarre, frenetic energy or plummeting down toward suicidal despair. It can be “life-trashing” with its dark moods, distorted thinking, and destructive effects on relationships.

It can also be a source of extraordinary spiritual and creative development, energy, drive, enthusiasm and self-confidence.

Kay Jamison, a Professor of Psychiatry at The John Hopkins University School of Medicine, in her book, “Touched by Fire,” provides a lengthy list of writers, composers and artists whose lives have revealed strong evidence that they were bipolar. Imagine Hemingway, Tolstoy, Keats, Berlioz, Handel, Michelangelo, van Gogh and numerous others experiencing the tumult that Jamison describes in, “An Unquiet Mind”: When you are high it is tremendous. The ideas and feelings are fast and frequent like shooting stars and you follow them until you find better and brighter ones. Shyness goes, the right words and gestures are suddenly there, the power to captivate others a felt certainty. Sensuality is pervasive and the desire to seduce and be seduced irresistible. Feelings of ease, intensity, power, well-being, financial omnipotence. and euphoria pervade one’s marrow. But, somewhere, this changes…overwhelming confusion replaces clarity…Everything previously moving with the grain is now against you-you are irritable, angry, frightened, uncontrollable, and enmeshed in the darkest caves of the mind…It goes on and on…but what then after the medications, the psychiatrist, the despair, depression and overdose? All those incredible feelings to sort through…credit cards revoked, bounced checks to cover, explanations due at work, apologies to make…friendships gone or drained…and most haunting, when will it happen again?

Bipolar disorder (formerly manic-depression) is seen by many people as a strange incurable psychiatric disease.

Because of their fears and misconceptions, they unwittingly perpetuate stigma and discrimination. For years, people like T.S. Eliot and Sylvia Plath were more likely to be locked away than given the opportunity for recovery. Today, brain scans

like MRIs and CTs reveal the specific structural and functional differences between a bipolar brain and a healthy one. Scientists have discovered new medications and alternative approaches that are transforming the lives of those with bipolar.

Each of us has the resources within to overcome life challenges such as mental or physical illness, death, divorce, a layoff, or a special needs child. Nassir Ghaemi, MD, who directs the Mood Disorders Program at Tufts, goes a step further to point out that leaders with bipolar have stronger qualities of empathy, realism, creativity and resilience, and are therefore better equipped to handle times of crisis.

Author Tom Whootton calls the “bipolar advantage” the ability to harness elements of hypomania such as enhanced creativity and productivity; depressive introspection can yield deeper awareness and insight; emotional pain can be a catalyst for personal growth and develop compassion. Of course, those who live daily with bipolar know that the “tipping point” of a high can begin a period of scattered thinking, grandiose delusions and destructive behaviors of mania, or, of a low that can pitch one into darkness and despair.

Addictions can be particularly troublesome for bipolar individuals; there is a tendency to self-medicate when the ‘center’ will not hold. Unfortunately, substances like alcohol, marijuana, and street drugs only compound the issues and complicate healing and growth. All of us crave peace of mind, but no drink or pill of any kind is a satisfying and lasting fix. There is also a tendency for people at the extreme poles to flush their prescribed medications, and stop therapy and attendance at support groups like AA or NA when they feel good. Eventually, overindulging in alcohol and/or non-prescribed drugs leads to a spiral downward to depression, a January 2013

rebound up to mania, symptoms like religious delusions, incoherent speech and agitation, or a trip to the psychiatric hospital.

When difficult situations arise in any life, the goal is to confront them or get help so that you can regain meaning and purpose. The same is true in dealing with bipolar disorder. Medications are useful to manage mood swings and other biological symptoms. Therapy can help the person with bipolar to change false beliefs and negative thinking as well as learn ways of healthy coping. Writing in a journal is useful, especially when one’s thoughts are racing at odd times like 4:30a.m. Certain supplements help to calm the brain such as Omega 3’s, good quality amino acids (proteins), and chamomile/lemon grass tea (check with your doctor first).

Spiritual beliefs and practices such as meditation and prayer are often critical components of a stabilizing program.

Meditation, for example, can be as simple a process as sitting quietly and following your breath for several minutes. It is centering, grounding, and relaxing. It has a profound effect on stress and provides a sense of serenity that pervades your day. Meditation also affects thought patterns and reduces anxiety.

Wishes Do Get Granted During that big blizzard on the High Plains last winter, a couple shy guys died at the same time and went to meet Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates.

St. Peter said, “I’d like to get you guys in now, but We’ve had a virus problem and all our information systems are down. You’ll have to go back to Earth for about a week, but you can’t go back as humans.

What’ll it be?”

The first shy guy says, “I’ve always wanted to be an eagle, soaring high above the Rocky Mountains.”

“So be it,” says St. Peter, and the first guy disappears.

The second shy guy mulls this over for a moment and asks, “Will any of this week’s activities ‘count’ against me getting into heaven?”

St. Peter: “No, as I told you, all systems are down.

There’s no way we can keep track of what you’re doing.”

“In that case,” says the second guy, “I’ve always wanted to be a stud.”

“So be it” says St. Peter, and the second guy disappears.

A week goes by, systems are back up and running, and the Lord tells St. Peter to recall the two shy guys.

“Do you think you have any trouble locating them?”

“The first one should be easy,” says St. Peter.

“He’s somewhere over by Pike’s Peak, flying with a bunch of eagles.

But the second one could prove to be more difficult.”

“Why?” asketh the Lord.

Letting Go of Resentments A story tells of a merchant in a small town who had identical twin sons. The boys worked for their father in the department store he owned and, when he died, they took over the store.

Everything went well until the day a dollar bill disappeared.

One of the brothers had left the bill on the cash register and walked outside with a customer. When he returned, the money was gone.

He asked his brother, “Did you see that dollar bill on the cash register?” His brother replied that he had not. But the young man kept probing and questioning. He would not let it alone.

“Dollar bills just don’t get up and walk away! Surely you must have seen it!”

No Admittance

Wishing to encourage her young son’s progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert.

After they were seated, mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her.

Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked “NO ADMITTANCE.” When the houselights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing.

There was subtle accusation in his voice. Tempers began to rise. Resentment set in. Before long, a deep and bitter chasm divided the young men. They refused to speak. They finally decided they could no longer work together and a dividing wall was built down the center of the store. For twenty years hostility and bitterness grew, spreading to their families and to the community.

Then one day a man in an automobile licensed in another state stopped in front of the store. He walked in and asked the clerk, “How long have you been here?”

The clerk replied that he’d been there all his life. The customer said, “I must share something with you. Twenty years ago I was “riding the rails” and came into this town in a boxcar. I hadn’t eaten for three days. I came into this store from the back door and saw a dollar bill on the cash register. I put it in my pocket and walked out. All these years I haven’t been able to forget that. I know it wasn’t much money, but I had to come back and ask your forgiveness.”

The stranger was amazed to see tears well up in the eyes of this middle-aged man. “Would you please go next door and tell that same story to the man in the store?” he said. Then the man was even more amazed to see two middle-aged men, who looked very much alike, embracing each other and weeping together in the front of the store.

After twenty years, the brokenness was mended. The wall of resentment that divided them came down.

It is so often the little things that finally divide people- words spoken in haste; criticisms; accusations; resentments. And once divided, they may never come together again.

The solution, of course, is to let it go. There is really nothing particularly profound about learning to let go of little resentments. But for fulfilling and lasting relationships, letting them go is a must. Refuse to carry around bitterness and you may be surprised at how much energy you have left for building bonds with those you love.

Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”

At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy’s ear, “Don’t quit. Keep playing.” Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obligato.

Together, the old master and the young novice transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. And the audience was mesmerized.

Whatever our situation in life and history--however outrageous, however desperate, whatever dry spell of the spirit, whatever dark night of the soul - - God is whispering deep within our beings, “Don’t quit. Massage and John Wayne

in infants is believed to cause severe physiological and emotional imbalance that is very hard to reverse even with years of therapy.

The main masculine role model for my father’s generation was the good old, rough, tuff and silently strong John Wayne. I love my father; he genuinely believed that hugs and kisses made little boys soft. It has now been proven after years of research, that the healthier touch and positive reinforcement we receive as children, the quicker we become independent as adults. I regularly see in my generation, very insecure and indecisive people--the exact opposite of John Wayne, not to mention an almost complete disconnect from emotional intelligence.

When we learn to experience the many different emotions we can convey through touch, our lives become rich in emotional depth. I believe that when we receive protective, health generating touch through massage, as children, we don’t crave attention, and this unhealthy craving doesn’t follow us into adulthood.

The best part of creating a massage relationship with your family is that it is a two way street!

Creating a healthy massage routine between parents and children is the essence of a healthy relationship that can be maintained through the transition stage of the apron strings being cut. The physiological and emotional benefits of healthy touch between parents and children can truly be measured over the course of a lifetime in healthy meaningful relationships--in short, children that receive healthy positive reinforcing touch through massage don’t grow up to be weaklings, as the John Wayne’s seemed to believe. In fact, it would appear to be the exact opposite.

The physical attributes of regular massage are expediential; this is clear when we look at cultures such as in Asia and Europe that maintain very healthy populations through regular massage with no pharmaceutical industrial subculture. The mental attributes of touch in babies and children are very well documented-the verdict being that touch stimulates brain neuron firing. The more physical sensations we experience as children, especially infants, the more neurological connections our brain cells make.

Children learn fast, and compression through kneeling and crawling can very effectively be directed to tired feet and sore forearms. In India, Champi (a sacred Buddhist technique) has long been practiced between mothers, daughters and grandmothers. The story goes that a local woman was watching some monks practice Champi, a spiritual scalp, face, neck and shoulder massage technique that addresses the spiritual chakras.

The lady saw the expressions of bliss in the monk’s faces and asked to be shown the technique. The head monk told her she could learn when she was reincarnated as a man and became a monk.
