SPRING IN BOERNE

C

Congratulations to Kendall County Judge Darrel Lux! The city’s partnership with Kendall County has grown tremendously since Judge Lux took office. We are looking forward to working together even more as we press forward on some major transportation and economic development initiatives. Congratulations as well to the newly elected county commissioners, Richard Elkins, Tommy Pheiffer, and Royce Steubing. Recently you may have been hearing about the city of Boerne’s involvement with the Bexar-San Antonio Metropolitan Planning Organization or simply the “MPO”. Boerne became member of the MPO last year with a goal of securing federal transportation funding to address some of our traffic challenges – specifically we are hoping to get funding for expansion of the IH10 and Scenic Loop intersection. Thank you to the over 130 people that attended the MPO’s public meeting here in Boerne recently to advocate for this major transportation improvement. Our partners in this effort include Kendall County, Texas Department of Transportation, BISD, the Boerne-Kendall County EDC, the Chamber of Commerce, MI Homes, and, of course, all of the drivers that use the intersection every day. Our application was submitted several months ago, and we have been told that we could hear something by this summer. District 1 councilmember Jeff Haberstroh is the city’s appointed member to the MPO Board of Directors and provides frequent updates at our city council meetings. I am pleased to report that the city’s public art collection is growing. You may have noticed that a life-size bronze of Wild Bill Hickok is now located on the Hill Country Mile at Main Plaza. I want to commend the Hill Country Council for the Arts, Johny Rosa, owner of Texas Treasures Art Gallery, and sculptor Erik Christianson, for collaborating with the City on this public art acquisition and installation. The next piece being installed is a bronze that was gifted to the City by Boerne resident Brenda Shaddox. This bronze sculpture titled “From the Land of the Cheyenne” by Jonathan Bronson will be featured along the Heart of Boerne trail behind the Boerne City Center shopping complex.

City of Boerne website – do you like the new look? We hope you’ll visit and explore the city’s website and give us some feedback. If you used the website before, you should have no trouble; all of the same information is there and in the same places. While it seems that this Spring season is being elusive, many of the trees in our area don’t seem to care. I’ve seen some blooming Redbud trees, the Mountain Laurels are set to burst forth, and many others are showing hints of green. Many of us are getting eager to work in our yards and gardens, so I want to remind you that we still need to be aware of the current watering restrictions. The reports I am getting indicate that drought conditions will persist in our area for the foreseeable future. City of Boerne water utility customers are currently under Stage 3 mandatory water conservation restrictions. This means that watering lawns and landscapes with sprinklers and irrigation systems is limited to one day per week according to your street address. Watering with a bucket or hand-held hose is allowed anytime. Using native grasses and drought tolerant plants in your yard is definitely the way to go. Carol and I look forward to seeing you out and about during these beautiful Spring days in Boerne!

E

CHARTER SCHOOL PAVES THE WAY TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR BOERNE STUDENTS by Denise R. Marcos

Every year, thousands of students around Texas walk across the stage with a high school diploma in hand. And while there’s no arguing that education is an important component to a happy, successful adult life, there is something much more valuable that those teenagers walk away with—confidence in the future. For students who, by circumstance, are statistically more likely to fail academically, that is often a luxury not often afforded to them. But MeadowLand Charter School, an alternative public learning environment located in Boerne that caters primarily to children who are “At Risk”, is breaking that stereotype every single day. A student is considered At Risk based on 13 criteria. Children who fall into that category are those with a disability, limited English proficiency, low socioeconomic status, homelessness, those who have been retained, did not maintain a 70% GPA or have not passed a readiness exam, adjudicated students, those who are pregnant or parents, recovered dropouts, those with behavior issues, or those who had previously resided or currently reside in a residential placement facility. Meadowland is a Generation 13 charter school that began enrollment in the fall of 2008 with 36 students

10

B OERNE B USINESS M ONTHLY | April 2014

in grades seven through 12. Today, in its sixth year, the school has grown to 97 students and serves students as young as first grade. It was founded with the intent of serving the residential treatment students who live on the property. But is also open enrollment, which allows children from the community to attend. One of the key elements that makes MeadowLand different from a traditional public school, is the school’s ability to be flexible and accommodating to each individual child’s needs, whether academic, behavioral or emotional, the teachers and staff can make adjustments as necessary for the child to succeed. Superintendent for MeadowLand, Don Mills, said it is the most important part

of his job. “The kids who come here, they are often scared of school. School has been a place where they have had constant failure or something traumatic has happened. Whereas most traditional schools are pushing for college readiness, we’re just trying to stabilize them for the day. Because of that level of neglect and abuse, just coming here can be really difficult for them. It’s one day at a time,” he said. “Because we have the flexibility to look at their needs individually and we have the ability to make alterations as necessary, we can help these kids succeed. It’s our job, and it’s our most important job, to build a relationship with each child, so they see the importance in themselves—in their future, in doing something good for themselves that they could be proud of.” A typical day at MeadowLand is anything but routine. Each day, Mills stresses, is different. And all the students, whether they live on the property or those who are from the community, are treated as an individual with individual focus and needs. “Our kids who live off campus are very much like our residential students. They enjoy the smaller classroom setting and the personal attention that is otherwise difficult to receive in a traditional classroom of 20+ kids,” he said. “We’ve learned throughout the years that these kids really make a connection to technology. And we’ve been very fortunate to have the resources to make those accommodations for them.” Through the generosity of the community and the funds allocated

sound of laughter and the friendly hellos that greet you as you walk into the school’s grounds exemplifies the sort of optimistic philosophy that Mills and his team strive for on a daily basis. It’s this type of positive influential culture that really makes being a part of this learning environment that much more purposeful for the teachers, staff and the children who come here every day. “What’s amazing about our faculty is that they are so involved in the kids’ lives that if something were happening on a Saturday, they’d be there. Everyone who is here is here because they want to be. We are all servant leaders. If we need to serve food in the cafeteria or if the janitor calls in sick and we need to clean the restrooms, we’ll do it without hesitation. We do it because it’s what’s best for the kids. And unlike most charters, all of our leadership is right here. I believe that what really impacts the student the most is the teacher. And what impacts the teacher is their leader,” Mills said. Incoming CEO for Roy Mass’ Youth Alternatives that holds the charter for MeadowLand Bill Wilkinson agrees, stating that nothing seems to influence children quite like that of an encouraging environment. “We allow the past to inform us of how we need to set things up for improvement. But we focus on the future and moving forward. For a lot of these kids, the interaction with adults is all about stuff they’ve already done, instead of the potential to be someone better moving

from federal funds and other various outlets, MeadowLand has been able to take necessary steps in order to use programs that allow students to be more in-tune with technology and their learning styles. “For some, listening to music while they work really helps them stay on track. For others, they might need to take a laptop and sit in a room alone quietly so they keep focused. If that’s something they need, it’s easy for us to make that happen,” Mills said. “However, some of our students very much need to be secluded and alone. And thankfully, we also have the capabilities to do that, too. We have a system they can log into and work independently that way while still having access to our teachers whenever they need to through Skype. Our teachers will also come to them and spend at least an hour a day teaching them one-onone. It’s just another one of the ways we can assure they’re successful.” Each classroom is equipped with a SMART Board, an interactive digital board that allows teachers and students to blend the simplicity of a typical whiteboard with the advanced functionality of a computer. Through these boards, Mills states, students are better connected to the world around them. “The SMART boards let the kids interact in a way that they can relate to. They can watch video clips, listen to audio, see pictures and be involved in a lesson through body movements. Our kids need that,” he said. A quick walk through the campus shows just how committed and passionate the group of 23 professionals and the volunteers who come to help are to the students at MeadowLand. The smiling faces, the

forward,” he said. “This tool of positive culture allows us to really focus on them instead of what their records tell us. We do not make judgments on the past. What’s done is done. We are here to help— every last one of us. We will do whatever it takes.” The power of showing someone understanding and compassion is instrumental in a happy, successful atmosphere. Both Mills and Wilkinson stress that the impact a community can make on one child’s life can drastically change that person to be better. “If people have it in their hearts to help, reach out and be that voice for these children. There are so many ways someone can make a difference,” Mills said. “One of the students wants to be a nature photographer, we don’t have those skills or the equipment to help her achieve that, but if someone in the community knew that, maybe they could help her. If someone wants to help, just ask how. You might have access to a service or talent that the students can really benefit from that you wouldn’t think is making a difference to them. A simple act of kindness goes a long way for these kids. We, as a school and as members of the community, are filling a need these children have—a need to feel loved, appreciated and looked after in a whole new way.” Recently, MeadowLand Charter School’s flag football team was named regional champions after just its first season. Roy Maas’ Youth Alternatives, includes MeadowLand was also named Non-Profit Organization of the year by the Boerne Chamber of Commerce. BBM

PUT YOUR TAX REFUND TO WORK

I

It may not be all that much fun to file your taxes, but, while you’re working on them, you do get to eagerly anticipate that one big question: Will I or won’t I get a tax refund? If you receive a refund, you’ll have to answer another question: What should I do with it? Your answer may depend, at least in part, on the size of your refund. In 2013, the average federal tax refund was about $2,650. Of course, your refund may be less than this amount (although it could also be more), but if you were to receive a $2,650 refund this year, what would you do with it? For one thing, you could put the money into an IRA. In 2014, you can put in up to $5,500 to a traditional or Roth IRA, so your $2,650 would represent nearly half your total yearly contribution. (If you’re 50 or older, you can put in up to another $1,000, for a total limit of $6,500.) But even if you only put in that $2,650, and you left it alone, it could grow significantly. In fact, after 30 years, your $2,650 would have grown to more than $20,000, assuming no further contributions and a hypothetical 7 percent annual return. And if you were able to put in that same $2,650 every single year for 30 years, again earning the same hypothetical 7 percent annual return, you would end up with almost $268,000*. Keep in mind, though, that you will eventually be taxed on your traditional IRA earnings. Earnings in a Roth IRA can be withdrawn tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59-1/2 and you’ve had your account at least five years. While funding your IRA certainly can be beneficial, it’s not the only choice you have for making good use of your tax refund. Here are a few other possibilities:

• PAY OFF SOME DEBTS. If you have a large tax refund, you could use the money to retire some debts, or at least cut them down to a more manageable size. And the lower your debt load, the more money you will have available to invest for your future. • HELP BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND. It’s a good idea to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account. Without such a fund, you may be forced to dip into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as a new furnace, a major car repair or a sizable medical bill. Consequently, you may want to put some, or all, of your tax refund into such a fund. • INVEST IN A COLLEGE SAVINGS VEHICLE. You could use your tax refund to invest in a college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. With this plan, your earnings grow tax-free, provided all withdrawals are used for higher education expenses. (Keep in mind, though, that 529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10% IRS penalty.) As you can see, you’ve got some good choices for using your tax refund wisely. Consider them carefully, and make the moves that work best for you.BBM Ron Warden is a financial advisor for Edward Jones. 830.249.8286, www.edwardjones.com 215 W Bandera Rd Ste 113 B Boerne, Texas 78006

Patient shares story of receiving first-class treatment without traveling to San Antonio

RELAX. UNWIND. GET A MASSAGE.

SWEDISH

by Karen Adams

It was early winter of 2013 and Bobbie Winn thought she had a bad chest cold. Her chest felt heavy and her cough was rough, so she decided to see her family practice physician. After a few tests, it was determined that Ms. Winn had a cancerous tumor in the right part of her chest and needed immediate treatment to kill the cancer cells, which were inoperable. Ms. Winn, 75, had just moved to Bandera from Midland and did not have a local family practice doctor, let alone an oncologist. But her daughter, a hill country resident, recommended a visit to the team at The START Center for Cancer Care (The START Center) in Boerne. “The doctors and nurses at The START Center were exceptional on all levels, especially Dr. Kalter, my doctor and advocate,” said Ms. Winn. Many residents in Boerne and the surrounding areas do not realize that The START Center facility located at the Methodist Boerne Medical Center on Menger Springs Road offers cutting-edge, customized cancer treatment with groundbreaking, accelerated drug development efforts. “It is a part of our mission to provide cancer patients living in and around Boerne the same quality of care that they would find in our San Antonio facilities,” said Steven Kalter, M.D., an oncologist and specialist with The START Center. “Our patients, just as Ms. Winn, are being treated with some of the most advanced treatments and technologies available today.” Ms. Winn started her treatments, which consisted of both chemo and radiation, on November 8, 2013 and finished February 25, 2014. “All the signs are pointing to remission,” said Winn. “What a blessing it has been to have these wonderful doctors and advanced treatments available in Boerne,” said Winn. “My commute from Bandera was quick, and the convenience of having a location that was close and accessible made it much easier for me and my family, especially as we tackled a draining disease,” she said. The physicians of the START Center aim to usher in a new era in cancer treatment, one that combines customized, streamlined cancer treatment with groundbreaking, accelerated drug development efforts. The center houses a full spectrum of clinical care for cancer patients, including chemotherapy, state-of- the-art radiation therapy, hormonal therapy and wellness programs. The START Center in Boerne is located at 134 Menger Springs Road; phone 210-593-5900. More at www.thestartcenter.com. BBM

If you’ve never been to a chiropractor, you probably assume that all they do is “crack backs,” and while this is probably what chiropractors are most known for, there are countless other benefits to chiropractic care. “We treat everything from recurring neck and back pain to allergies, headaches, asthma, insomnia and any number of similar problems,” said Dr. James Kennell, owner of Boerne Wellness Chiropractic. “In fact, manual adjusting is just one of many techniques that we use. On any given day I probably use up to thirteen different techniques to adjust our patients,” he added. Dr. Kennell, a Boerne native, opened Boerne Wellness Chiropractic in 2001 and in January of 2005 he was able to open his dream practice at its current location just outside of Boerne on Highway 46 West on the land where he and his family grew up. Boerne Wellness Chiropractic has grown to be one of the largest chiropractic practices in the area and upon visiting it is easy to see why. Not only is the state-of-the-art facility tucked away in a serene setting, but the friendly, knowledgeable staff make you feel instantly at home. Patients rave not only about the quality of the chiropractic care, but the warm and happy environment as well. Dr. Kennell was introduced to chiropractic at the young age of 17 when he developed back issues of his own. “I had gone to the doctor, been prescribed medications but I was still in pain,” said Dr. Kennell. It wasn’t until a friend pointed out to him that his treatment wasn’t working that he realized he needed to seek an alternative form of treatment. “She handed me a ‘Wellness Pass’ for a chiropractor and the rest is history,” he said with a smile. “This ‘Wellness Pass’ offered a consultation, examination, x-rays and a report of the findings for $30. I thought it was such a great idea that I offer that same pass, for the same $30 at my practice to this day!” Chiropractic care impacted Dr. Kennell’s health and wellbeing in such a way that he was inspired at that young age to pursue his passion and dedicate his life to educating and informing the public about achieving maximum health and wellness through chiropractic care. After completion of his Pre-chiropractic studies at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas and his Doctor of Chiropractic at Parker Chiropractic College in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Kennell moved

back to his hometown to open a new practice. According to Dr. Kennell, “My goal was to extend the lifestyle of chiropractic wellness to my community.” While Dr. Kennell has had the opportunity to perform over 98,000 adjustments and manage thousands of cases involving acute and chronic neck and back pain, sciatica and headaches, his passion involves what happens after the pain is gone – assisting his patients in establishing a wellness lifestyle. According to Dr. Kennell, “We try to find the root of what is causing the patient’s problem. There is physical stress, which is the most obvious cause of most of our patients’ problems, but there is also chemical stress and emotional stress that play an enormous role in our overall wellbeing. It’s all about finding the right balance. I can work on a patient’s problem area over and over, but if there is an element of chemical or emotional stress that is causing the problem that isn’t getting addressed it will just keep reoccurring. Finding the root of the problem is essential to the end result.” Boerne Wellness Chiropractic added Dr. Michael Garcia to the practice in 2012. As part of the practice he hopes to contribute his skills and passion for getting patients to live a healthy, pain free life. “Dr. Garcia is a great asset to Boerne Wellness Chiropractic,” said Dr. Kennell, “he has a lot of experience with TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction) and is able to use his valuable experiences to help a wide array of patients.” Dr. Kennell and Dr. Garcia treat their patients with the patient’s goals in mind. “We focus on what they are looking to gain from chiropractic care and treat accordingly. We have a lot of patients who just want to be able to improve their golf swing, so that’s what we focus on for them. Each patient is unique in their goals and in how we treat their specific needs,” stated Dr. Kennell. “We by no means have a cookie-cutter approach to care. We adjust some patients manually; we also have a ProAdjuster, which is a machine that uses the latest advances in computers and engineering technologies to blend with chiropractic to treat patients in a very gentle, yet effective manner. We look to many different methods for treatment depending on what is right for the patient.” continued on page 16

According to Dr. Kennell, “The key to chiropractic care is finding out if there is something pressing on the nerve and if so how can it be fixed or reduced. Chiropractic is a health care profession that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.” As chiropractors, Dr. Kennell and Dr. Garcia know how to examine your spine and care for your nervous system to improve your current state of health and assist you in reaching your body’s full health potential. “The major difference between chiropractic and traditional western medicine is medical doctors generally concentrate on relieving the symptom rather than correcting the cause; however, chiropractic addresses the cause of the problem, bringing the body back to ProAdjuster its highest state of health,” he added. The patients of Boerne Wellness Chiropractic range in age from one-month-old all the way to 93-years-old and everywhere in between. Colleen Cummings, a patient of Dr. Kennell, was first referred to him by a chiropractor friend of hers from another town to treat her then 17-month-old son. “He was having bad digestive troubles and was in a lot of discomfort. I was a bit hesitant taking my child to a chiropractor at such a young age but after just the first visit it was an amazing revelation. My son had such a dramatic turn around that I was sold. My entire family including my husband, my three sons and even my parents all started using Dr. Kennell for our general wellness,” said Cummings. Patricia Pena has been seeing Dr. Kennell for 10 years. “He is always the first person I think of when I have a problem. He always hits it right on the mark and is able to address my problems quickly,” she said. Pena began seeing Dr. Kennell for a frozen shoulder, which was “eighty percent better after just 2 weeks of seeing Dr. Kennell.” According to Pena, “my two daughters also use Boerne Wellness Chiropractic, it feels like sort of a family affair. Many of my friends with sinus problems really believe in Dr. Kennell’s techniques as well. To me, the chiropractic care offered by Dr. Kennell and his team is just common sense.” “Patients seek chiropractic care for a variety of reasons,” stated Dr. Kennell, “We see families, athletes, small children and seniors to correct and manage a wide range of problematic cases. Whether you are looking to have more energy and less fatigue, perform better at work or just live life to the fullest, if you have something that is interfering with your wellness, give chiropractic a try, you’ll be glad you did!” BBM

WILL YOU BE

A

Ready?

According to the Social Security Administration the average retirement benefit paid is only $1,269 per month. Today’s life expectancy is more than 85 years old and 34% of the workforce has no savings set aside specifically for retirement. Will you be ready for retirement? Whether you are entering the workforce or at the height of your career, saving for retirement is a must. At Akin, Doherty, Klein & Feuge, P.C. (ADKF) we have found that these are amongst some of the most popular options: INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS (IRA) Both Roth and Traditional IRA’s are two of the most common retirement accounts. For 2013, an individual with earned income can contribute up to $5,500, $6,500 for individuals over 50. Traditional IRA contributions are normally tax deductable, but taxable at time of withdrawal whereas Roth accounts are non-deductible, but also non-taxable at the time of withdrawal including the income accumulated within the plan. The deduction may be limited if you or your spouse are covered by a retirement plan at work and your income exceeds certain thresholds. (Over $59,000 Single, over $95,000 Married filing joint) Even though Roth accounts are not as popular as traditional, if you are likely to benefit more from tax-free withdrawals later than from tax savings now, a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k) may be the better choice. IRA contributions must be made by April 15, 2014, require very little paperwork and have no annual filing requirement. SIMPLIFIED EMPLOYEE PENSION Simplified Employee Pension’s (SEP) allow for employer only contributions, but are available to all size businesses, including sole proprietors. SEP’s allow for much larger contributions than IRA’s. If chosen to be made, contributions for eligible employees cannot exceed the lesser of 25% of the employee’s compensation or $51,000. Contributions are based on a percentage of each eligible employee’s compensation. SEP’s must be set up and funded by the due date of your 2013 business tax return (including extension) in order to take the deduction for 2013. SEP’s require minimal paperwork and no annual filing requirement. 401(K) PLANS 401(k) plans allow for employee elective salary deferrals. Employers can make deductible contributions and withdraws are taxable at retirement. The employee contribution limit for 2013 for a traditional 401(k) plan is $17,500, $12,000 for Simple (Savings Incentive Match Plan) 401(k) plan. Individuals over 50 are allowed to make catch-up contributions, $5,500 to traditional and $2,500 for Simple. All required employer contributions are 100% vested for Simple plans, but traditional plans can be designed to become vested over time. 401(k) traditional plans are generally more expensive to maintain and require annual filings with the Internal Revenue Service. One-Participant 401(k)plans, also called Solo 401(k), are similar to SEP’s, however, Solo-401(k)’s allow for larger contributions simply because of the way the annual contribu-

tion is calculated. The maximum contribution is still $51,000 with catch-up contributions allowed, however with Solo-401(k)’s you can get to the limit more easily or with a smaller amount of income by making both employee elective deferrals and employer non-elective contributions. For example, a self-employed individual with earnings of $100,000 under a SEP account can contribute $25,000 (25% of 100,000). Under a Solo-401(k) plan, the same person can contribute an employee contribution of $17,500 and employer contributions of $25,000(25% of 100,000). In this example, the maximum allowed is $17,500 more. For someone in the right situation, this employer match can be a huge advantage and even greater advantage for married individuals. An additional advantage is that loans are allowed out of Solo-401(k)’s, whereas they are not allowed out of SEP’s. Unfortunately, with the pro’s come the con’s. These plans do come with much greater administrative responsibilities such as the annual filings. For new employees joining the workforce time is on your side, but you must take advantage now. Most retirement contributions are due by April 15th with some extension exceptions. Right now is the perfect time to consider which retirement account is best for you and the CPAs at ADKF would be glad to assist you in the process. CLIENT OF ADKF, TITAN TRANSPORTATION, WON A HUGE VICTORY IN THEIR TEXAS FRANCHISE TAX APPEAL Working in conjunction with Attorney Jimmy Martens of Martens, Todd & Leonard, Titan Transportation won a substantial victory in the Texas Court of Appeals on a franchise tax issue that has plagued many companies, thanks in part to expert testimony given by Howard Klein of Akin, Doherty, Klein & Feuge, P.C. (ADKF). In Titan’s case, the Texas Court of Appeals ruled that a provider of “aggregate” at real property construction sites can exclude from total revenue sub-contractor payments. Titan Transportation is in the business of hauling, delivering, and depositing aggregate at real-property construction sites, primarily through the use of sub-contractors. In Titan’s case the

difference when determining the Texas Franchise-Tax burden was significant. In this case, the exclusion applies because the taxpayer paid sub-contractors to provide services that were connected with the construction of improvements on real property and were directly related to the construction of such improvements. The service of picking up and transporting the aggregate to the construction sites was necessary and integral to the construction of improvements on real property. The aggregate hauled to the construction sites had to be placed in a particular location on the site to be useful, and the sub-contractors deposited the material in a manner that saved the construction companies (i.e., the taxpayer's customers) time, labor, and money. As a result, the Court of Appeals ruled that Titan has the right to exclude, from total revenue, flow-through funds that Titan is contracted to pay its sub-contractors. (Titan Transportation, LP v. Combs, et al., No. 03-13-00034-CV, slip op. (Tex. Ct. App.—Austin, 03/14/2014)). The Texas Court of Appeals decision is likely to be substantial for many companies and industries and we believe this ruling could have farther reaching impacts for Texas businesses. The professionals at ADKF (www.adkf.com) look forward to the opportunity to bring our expertise to you and see how this ruling might benefit your business just as it has for Titan Transportation. When choosing to evaluate the impact of this ruling for your business be sure to come to the firm who participated in bringing this opportunity to Texas business.

WILD BILL HICKOK TAKES A SEAT AT MAIN PLAZA Wild Bill Hickok was not a native Texan, but he got here as quickly as he could, and like many of us, he has decided to spend the rest of his days right here in Boerne. Hickok’s actual body is buried in Deadwood, South Dakota, but a life-size bronze of Wild Bill is now sitting on a bench on Boerne’s Hill Country Mile at the east end of Main Plaza. This is the second bronze sculpture the city of Boerne has installed as part of the city’s public art initiative. “Father Gander”, which was sculpted by Larry Stevens and donated to the city in 2012, is installed along the trail in River Road Park. The city’s Public Art Review Committee reviewed the life size sculpture of “Wild Bill Hickok with Bench”, by artist Erik Christianson, and determined that installation adjacent to Main Plaza was the most appropriate. The Boerne City Council authorized the expenditure of $18,000 to purchase the bronze, which had an original price tag of $48,000. The Hill Country Council for the Arts contributed $18,000 from their fundraising efforts while the artist and Johny Rosa from Texas Treasures Fine Arts funded the remaining $12,000. Brenda Shaddox, of Boerne, has gifted a bronze sculpture titled “From the Land of the Cheyenne,”

HILL COUNTRY DAILY BREAD MINISTRIES BREAKS GROUND FOR CONSTRUCTION OF NEW FACILITY

A

by Denise R. Marcos

A momentous groundbreaking ceremony took place Tuesday, Feb. 4, to begin the construction for the Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries’ Regional Resource and Training Center located at the corner of Cascade Caverns and Ranch Road. The new facility will allow the ministry to broaden its services that currently help thousands of families across eight Hill Country counties who are in need, which allows the HCDBM to expand their programs and services while continue to be a volunteer destination for all the counties it assists. The entire facility, totaling 42,000-square-feet, will become the new home to the main facets that make up the Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries. The center is funded by numerous foundations, individuals and gifts in-kind. In July of 2013, the J.E. and L.E Mabee Foundation presented a challenge grant to HCDBM to receive $1,000,000 if the ministry completed the campaign by July 2014. Currently there is still $600,000 left to raise. The space will include a 27,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution center, which will store hundreds of boxes of non-perishable food items, fresh produce, personal hygiene products and new or gently used clothing donated by partner organizations, churches, non-profit agencies and community members of surrounding areas. A significantly large portion of the space will be dedicated to the offices that will be used to assist in the expansion of the ministry’s programs. The 4,000-square-foot training facility will allow HCDBM to provide an on-site HCDBM Board at ground breaking ceremony (left to right): David Hubbard, location to educate Agnes Hubbard, Les Huffman, Meg Grier, Dwaine Rivers and Duke Jonietz.

and support church leadership and family mentors, host faith-based organization leadership trainings, train volunteers and assist in the development of new relationships with participating churches. The event facility will be open to the public for various community functions. The garden and outdoor amphitheater will be used for outdoor concerts to encourage cross-cultural engagement and increase involvement of the community into the HCDBM’s work and mission. The project is expected to be complete in December 2014. HCDBM is a Christian, non-profit agency dedicated to helping individuals and families in poverty. The organization was founded in the fall of 2000 by David and Agnes Hubbard who worked out of a garage and served 30 families at that time. Today, HCDBM operates out of its 17,500-squarefoot warehouse with more than 5,000 volunteers. Currently, the ministry serves 18,000 adults, children and families in eight Hill Country counties. Home Remodeling Projects that Pay Off!

W

Whether you are looking to put your home on the market soon, or simply want to spruce the place up a bit, it’s important to put your time and effort into projects that will add value to your home. So which home improvement projects offer the most bang for your buck? Check out the list below to see a few projects where your dollars are well spent: NEW FRONT DOOR That’s right, replacing your old front door is the top-ranking home improvement project. On average a new front door adds 96.6 percent of the amount you spent to the value of your home. However, you must keep in mind that it can’t be just any front door. The door needs to be of good quality and be the right choice for your home. In addition to replacing your front door, sometimes just a simple new coat of paint on the existing front door can add a similar payoff to replacing it. A FRESH COAT OF PAINT Painting the interior or exterior of your home can offer a big payback. Just remember to choose tasteful, neutral colors and make sure the work is done well and looks professional. A fresh coat of paint will brighten up even a very old home. REMODEL THE KITCHEN When it comes to selling your home, updated kitchens are important. There is something very appealing about a beautifully remodeled kitchen. If you have an outdated kitchen, most buyers overestimate the amount it would cost them to update it. A savvy homeowner can do a nice kitchen update for much less than the potential buyers assume it will cost. However, just like the front door, it is important to do the right kitchen remodel for your home. As a rule of thumb, look to spend no more than 25 percent of the home’s value for a new kitchen. Don’t have enough money for a full kitchen remodel? Not to worry, something as simple as replacing the countertops or refacing the cabinets can offer a great return on your investment. A minor kitchen remodel offers an average of 78 percent return on renovation spending.

UPDATE THE BATHROOMS Bathroom remodels are often projects that are long overdue. Whether your bathroom is in need of expansion or simply needs an updated look, a quality bathroom remodel can add significant value to your home. Be careful to choose neutral colors and materials that will be beautiful for years to come. Look to spend no more than about 12 percent of the value of your home on a master bathroom remodel and of course much less for any other bathrooms in your home. Replacing old fixtures, floors, sinks, toilets and bathing areas could put about 62.2 percent of those costs back into your pocket when you decide to put your house back on the market. FINISHING UNFINISHED SPACES Does your home have an attic or a basement that could be finished out? Finishing theses spaces is a great way to add square footage to your home without having to add on. In general, working within the existing walls of your home yields a better payoff than bigger projects such as additions. ADD A DECK Does the thought of adding value to your home while extending your outdoor living space sound like a win-win situation to you? Installing a deck is a great way to add value to your home. A wooden deck tends to repay about 70.1 percent of the project cost, while a composite material deck has about a 62.8 percent payback. Something to consider though is the cost of maintenance of the material you choose. Wood decks are less expensive upfront, but the annual maintenance of a wood deck will add up over time, while composite decks are stain and fade-resistant. At the end of the day, a recently remodeled home will always be worth more than one that is 10 years out of date. Even if you can't get every dollar spent back, you will at least go a long way toward maintaining your home’s long-term value. Just keep in mind that it is important to keep any improvements within the same style as the rest of the home and that any investment doesn’t price your home way above the average home value for your neighborhood.BBM

Office Space vs. Work from Home

D

WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOUR SMALL BUSINESS? by Taylor Davis

Do you operate your small business from your home? If so, you are definitely not alone. A recent survey of U.S. businesses showed that a whopping 69 percent of American entrepreneurs started their business at home and 59 percent of established small businesses were run from a home office. But how do you know if working from home is the right decision for your small business? Here are a few things to consider when deciding where to set up shop: THINK ABOUT YOUR ENVIRONMENT: Do you have a space in your home that can be dedicated strictly to your business? Does your home offer a peaceful environment where you will be able to actually get work done? If the answer is yes, then great! However, if you have kids running around or noisy neighbors you might be better off getting an office. EVALUATE YOUR PERSONALITY TYPE: Some people thrive when left alone; others wither away. If you are a more extroverted person, working from home is probably not for you. Even if you are the only employee at your small business, a small office outside of the home will make it more probable that you will get a few visitors every now and then and be able to find a sense of community. On the other hand, some people find that a home office makes it hard to separate their work life from their home life. It is important to be able to turn off the switch and take a break. INCREASE YOUR EFFICIENCY AND EARNINGS: Sure, renting an office space is going to cost extra money, not to mention you will be giving up the home office tax deduction, but many people find that renting an office space makes them more productive, thus increasing

their earnings by far more than if they worked from home. Highly organized self-starters are more likely to do well with a home-based business, but if you find yourself lounging around the house in your pajamas watching television it’s probably time to go get yourself an office space! APPEARANCE MATTERS: Some businesses can be 100 percent internet-based and no one will ever need to know where you are working from. You might work from home, the local coffee shop or even the beach and nobody would know the difference. Other businesses however need to present a more professional appearance. Are you opening a new law firm? Maybe you are a financial planner? If so, your prospective clients will expect to meet with you in a more professional setting. Consider your customer base and plan accordingly. GROWTH: Even if you absolutely love everything about working from home, there may come a time when it just doesn’t make sense for your business. A growing business means employees, more office equipment and storage space. There may come a time when your business just doesn’t fit inside of your home. Depending on where you live, zoning laws may even restrict you from running a home-based business with more than one employee. In the end, it is important to weigh all the pros and cons of working from home to decide what will be the best decision for your business. An office outside of the home may mean a longer commute and added overhead, but will it pay for itself with increased productivity? Only you know the answer to that – good luck with your decision!
