publisher's note March is one of my very favorite months! This is the month that brings us spring and Daylight Savings Time, two of the very best things that happen all year long in my opinion. After what seems like a very long and cold winter, warm weather, sunshine and spring flowers can’t come soon enough for me. This issue of BBM we feature Boerne Brewery, a great local business that is really dedicated to being a Boerne business. Owners Fred and Jennifer Hernandez want to make beer in Boerne, for the people of Boerne (and the surrounding areas of course). Everything from the names of their ales to the ar twork on their labels have local ties and we at BBM think that is just about awesome! They have a really fun story too, check it out on page 14. Also in the March issue we have features on two fun events that are taking place at the beginning of April, Boerne Wild West Days and the Boerne Handmade Market. Both events are sure to be a great time so make sure to check them out. For all of you business owners out there, have you ever wondered what The True Cost of a Bad Hire is? Well, on page 18 Jason Carlettini of ADKF shares how improving your hiring process can not only save money, but reduce stress and enhance the culture of your organization. In addition to this, Mayor Mike Schultz keeps us up-to-date with what is happening in and around the City of Boerne, plans for an Amphitheater at the Patrick Heath Public Library are announced, J.R. Mooney Galleries of Fine Ar t fill us in on what we can look forward to during Boerne’s 18th Annual Parade of Ar tists and so much more! I hope you enjoy this month’s BBM,

Tired of seeing the same ol’ things in every store you go in? Want to buy something creative, original, and best of all handmade? Well, mark your calendars for Saturday, April 5th for the Boerne Handmade Market. This fun, local shopping experience only happens twice a year, so make sure not to miss it. According to Boerne Handmade Market co-founders, Alyssa Mantooth and Rachel Russo, “Our first BHM was in October of 2012. We have tons of really creative and crafty friends and we thought it would be fun to start something that would give them an outlet to share and sell their creations. We never imagined it would be as successful as it has been.” Russo and Mantooth excitedly refer to BHM as “a small, huge success!”
Mantooth. “We’ve even been named one of the Best Handmade Markets in Texas by Pop Shop Houston!” The success of BHM may also have something to do with the fact the Russo and Mantooth want the market to be a good experience for both the shoppers and the vendors. The duo feels that it is essential to offer a good product mix. That being said, they aim to not have more than twenty percent of the market occupied by a specific type of vendor. “We have vendors offering woodworking, jewelry, clothing, knives, soaps and lotions, children and baby items, home goods, hand-painted signs, and the list goes on. But you won’t find that the market is overwhelmed by any one type of product,” said Russo. “We have also
In fact, with each BHM the number of vendors continues to grow. “We have over thirty vendors already signed up for the upcoming April BHM with more expected to attend as well,” said Mantooth. “The vendor spaces underneath the covered pavilion, at the Pavilion Food Park & Events where the market is held, have all been reserved since October. Now we are expanding our event space and selling vendor spots outside of the covered pavilion.” Most of the vendors who participate in BHM come from the Hill Country, San Antonio and Austin, however they even have a few who come from as far as Houston. “The word is definitely spreading about our market, it’s exciting to see the growth,” stated
found that items in the $25-$30 range are what sell the most, so we encourage our vendors to keep their products under $50 for the most part,” added Mantooth. So if you’re in the market for some one-of-a-kind, crafty creations you can’t miss this spring’s Boene Handmade Market. BBM

GREAT PEOPLE MAKE BOERNE A GREAT PLACE
C
Congratulations to all of the Boerne Chamber of Commerce business award winners! We have quite a diverse business community with business leaders, volunteers, and supporters doing many great things for the Boerne community. It was such a thrill to see our Boerne city staff once again recognized for the terrific work they do. Government workers typically get a bad rap, but not in Boerne. We are so blessed to have public servants that are professional, committed to, and enthusiastic about their work. City manager Ron Bowman received the prestigious Chairman’s award; Jeff Thompson, deputy city manager and economic development director was honored for his years of service on the Chamber Board of Directors; the 2013 Wild Game Dinner Committee Member of the Year award went to Gayle Stakes, the director of the Boerne Civic Center; and the 2013 Best of BoerneFest Committee Member of the Year award was presented to Danny Zincke, the director of the city’s Parks and Recreation department. Last month, I also had the distinct pleasure of attending an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony. Congratulations to Joshua Boerner, John D’Spain, Jacob Schroder, Adam Taliaferro, and Michael Urh for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. If you know them, let them know you value their contributions in our community. As many of you have noticed, the long anticipated Herff Road construction project has begun. While the Main Street bridge project has been an extraordinary exercise in patience, the thousands of us that travel Herff Road and adjacent roadways should now prepare for several months of more construction pain. But, oh boy, it’s going to be worth it! I strongly urge you to start planning a different path of travel, allow extra time to get where you’re going, and be especially cautious and patient in the various work zones. There are several phases of this roadway project - reconstruction of the Herff and Esser intersection, reconstruction of Herff Road, construction of a new intersection at Herff and Old San Antonio Road, and construction of the Herff Road extension to Main Street. Once the overall project is complete in a couple of years, this new roadway is expected to significantly reduce traffic on Main Street and at the River Road intersection. Traffic from Highway 46 East traveling to San Antonio and beyond will have a much quicker and safer route to Interstate 10. Now, a quick update on the Main Street bridge

project - the TXDOT contractor is removing rubble and cleaning up their worksite along the creek. The remaining bridge painting and repaving is weather sensitive, so that work will be completed as soon as we have some consistently good weather. Staff has noticed that the Cibolo Creek Trail in this area has been severely damaged, and we fully expect the TXDOT contractor to make the necessary repairs. I wish I could give you a final completion date, but it keeps changing; so, I am asking for your continued patience, because, in reality, that is the only thing we can control in this situation. We received some great news at city hall last month! The Boerne Public Library Foundation is set to receive a very generous contribution from the Majestic Arts Foundation to fund an amphitheater at the Patrick Heath Public Library. An amphitheater on the library grounds has always been part of the library master plan; however, there has not been enough funding, until now, for its construction. It will be built along the sloped area behind the library campus. The grant funding also includes sound and lighting equipment so we can provide an even greater variety of performing arts. Ariel Brooks-Stevens, the Foundation’s executive director, deserves tremendous praise for her efforts to secure this financial support. I know all of the Foundation members and the library staff are extremely excited about this new education and entertainment venue at the city’s premier community gathering spot. As I have mentioned here many times, economic development in Boerne is a key focus at city hall. It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Kendall County Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors recently approved their business name change to “Boerne-Kendall County Economic Development Corporation.” Changing the title is a simple, yet profound, demonstration of how much this working partnership is committed to moving Boerne forward together when it comes to responsible growth in our commercial sector. And we sure know how to have fun in Boerne too. Boerne Performing Arts presented the incomparable “Ten Tenors” a couple of weeks ago – what a show! I am told there are still tickets available for “Time for Three“ on March 25. The “VocaPeople” performance has been rescheduled to October 23, and there are still lots of tickets available for that show as well. Carol and I look forward to seeing you at these amazing performances.

Looking for a rootin’ tootin’ good time the whole family can enjoy? Well, join the Rotary Club of Boerne on April 5th, 2014 for their 9th Annual Boerne Wild West Day at Enchanted Springs Ranch! This one-of-a-kind event is organized to provide high entertainment and educational value while benefiting a number of local charitable and service causes including the Early Act First Knight Program, San Antonio based Wounded Warriors Project and lower income area boys and girls. According to J. Christopher Byrd, Esq., Founder of Boerne Wild West Days and Co-Founder of Early Act First Knight Program, “Boerne Wild West Days are set on the frontier of Enchanted Springs Ranch to give those that come a chance to experience a romantic period of our heritage where nobility and honor were challenged by American life and issues that formed our country, which still are sources of anxieties. This was a time when life was both simple and yet complicated, when all people had to work hard just to survive. Our citizenry wasn't frightened by anything or anybody, even when men and women had nothing but their faith and desire to defend them-

selves, their loved ones and their liberty. The wild west was a time of new beginnings, settling of new lands that were raw, pure and lawless, and that gave us the tales of color, courage and reckless bravado found in the cowboys and native Americans, miners, mountain men, cattlemen, pony express riders, lawgivers and law-takers. The theme provides a family day of enriching entertainment and history full of stagecoach rides, gunfights and numerous exhibitions of valor, skill and bravery displayed by professional performers including live music. BWWD now is the venue for the annual Early Act First Knight convention where thousands of children ages 5-13 are invited to come from their schools and showcase character building and service above self sponsored by numerous Rotary Clubs across Texas, Oklahoma and South Carolina." This year, BWWD will kick off with music by Two Tons of Steel on Friday evening, April 4th, 2014. Enjoy the evening under the stars at Boerne’s Main Plaza beginning at 7:00pm. Ticket prices are $10 and include admission to the BWWD at Enchanted Springs Ranch, located at 242 Hwy. 46 West, just a few miles from downtown Boerne the next day. On Saturday, bring the kids out again and climb aboard the stagecoach, saddle up for pony rides, “hold on” with mutton busting, stick horse races and mechanical bull riding. You can even sit on Woodrow the longhorn steer! Even more fun is to be had with performances by world renowned Pistol Packin Paula, the Knights of the Guild show, trick roper Kevin Fitzpatrick, the jousting knights and cowboy magician Tim St. John. There will be live music all day by Wolf Sisters. Of course, the BWWD would not be possible without the support of their
sponsors, which include: Platinum Sponsor, Texas Rebel Radio KFAN 107.9; Gold Sponsors, Enchanted Springs Ranch and Frost Bank; Silver Sponsors, Kendall County Abstract Company, Kendall County Air, McCoy’s Building Supply, Preferred Landscape & Lighting & RBFCU; Bronze Sponsors, Billy’s Western Wear, GVTC, Home Instead Senior Care, Jennings Anderson Ford, Karen Daly, Realtor – Coldwell Banker, Texas Heritage Bank, The GVTC Foundation, Total Team Roping and Wheelers Feed & Outfitters. BEER BREWED IN BOERNE, FOR BOERNE!

The couple that previously owned the property where Boerne Brewery is located is credited with naming one of Boerne’s biggest annual parties: Boerne Berges Fest! 14

For a town rich in German history, Boerne has been missing one essential element – a beer to call its own! However, with labels such as Denim-Hosen, Willy’s ESB, Old Courthouse Ale and Hopstrasse, Boerne Brewery has emerged to fill this gap. “Our goal is to make beer in Boerne for the people of Boerne and the surrounding areas,” said Fred Hernandez, co-owner of Boerne Brewery. Fred, along with his wife, Jennifer Hernandez began this project three years ago and after much demolition, construction and lots of waiting were able to begin distribution of their ales this past January. According to Fred, “We focus on making beer that the residents of Boerne and the surrounding area can enjoy and be proud of. We don't aspire to be the next huge nationwide brewery. Instead, we will purposely stay small enough that we can have a personal active role in producing the beers that we and our friends and neighbors enjoy.” So how exactly does one become a craft brewer you might ask? “Through a lot of trial and error. These recipes are the result of years of home-brewing, tasting and sharing with friends and family,” said Fred. In fact, Fred’s very first batch of beer was the result of Jennifer giving him a Mr. Beer Kit. “It was BAD, very bad! But, I was hooked,” laughed Fred. He began working to tweak his recipe. “He made so much beer that I had to eventually kick him out of the kitchen and the garage,” said Jennifer with a smile. “There was this beer that I really liked, Old Peculier, and I must have come up

The perfect The Boerne Brewery facility consists of a 6,000 square foot warehouse and tasting combination of hop flowers is the secret to this room located at 9 Hill View Lane in Boerne. According to Fred, “Jennifer actually enlistAmerican IPA named after Boerne’s historic Main ed the help of a realtor friend of ours to hunt down a brewery-worthy property without Street, Hauptstrasse. me knowing. When they found this property, Jennifer then called me out to look at the In addition to the beer all being named after property. It was then that I realized that Jennifer was serious when she had kicked me out local influences, local artists created the artwork of the garage!” There was an old homestead on the property that was not in any shape for Boerne Brewery’s labels as well. Gus Guerra is to serve as the brewery, but Fred and Jennifer did use many of the old building matericredited with the label for Denim-Hosen, Pamela als in different aspects around the brewery. Jennifer added, “we did find several buried Gardner created the label for Willy’s ESB, Old treasures on the property. Their recipes deviate slightly from traditional standards to compensate for the warmer Texas climate. They do not filter or pasteurize any of their beers. Denim-Hosen, a Wheat Ale, is a German Kolsch-styled brew whose recipe has been modified for a drier, smooth and refreshing finish. Think lederhosen made from denim. This is a traditional German brew done with a Texas twist. Willy’s ESB, was inspired by premium ales from England and splits the difference between a pale ale and an ESB. This ale’s namesake was an English transplant to Boerne. Old Courthouse Ale is an English Old Ale named after Boerne’s landmark original courthouse, the second oldest in Texas. list of locations where you can find their products. Roger Castillo, the marketing/sales manager for Boerne Brewery has secured their ales a spot at 17 local businesses and the list is quickly growing. Roger added, “So far, you can find our beer at Little Gretel, Mague’s Café, Riverside Supermarket, Qwik Pantry, Captain Turquand’s Saloon, Bergheim Cellars, Random, Dog and Pony Grill, Twin Liquors, Brand Liquors, Hill Country Wine and Spirits, Hungry Horse Restaurant, Ye Kendall Inn, D&B Liquor, Bergheim General Store, Flagstop and the brand new Old No. 9 Depot and Longhorn Café. We also just got into Gabriel’s Wine & Spirits at 1604 and Blanco, so the San Antonio invasion has begun. We’re off to a really good start and there are many more locations to come!” While the ales produced by Boerne Brewery are proving to be a hit among both locals and tourists, a whole new appreciation for beer is developed with just a quick tour of the brewing facility. After seeing how and where this beer is made, it becomes very clear that brewing a good beer is both an art and a science. “There is a lot more that goes into the brewing process than you might think,” said Fred. “It’s a long running joke that farmers make wine, but engineers make beer,” he laughed. Fred and Jennifer both happen to be engineers, he is a mechanical engineer and she is a chemical engineer. According to Fred, “It takes the better part of a day to brew a batch of beer. Six hours on a good day and we even had a nightmare day that lasted 19 hours, but the good news is that no beer was harmed in the process!” Once the beer has been brewed, you wait for it to ferment for two weeks, “At that point you are at the mercy of chemistry and biology,” added Fred. Each batch of beer made at the Boerne Brewery requires 1900 pounds of high-quality grain and will result in 30 barrels of beer or 930 gallons, which is then bottled or put into a keg onsite. The Boerne Brewery team of Fred, Jennifer and Roger work tirelessly to brew quality ales made from the finest ingredients. Fred added, “We have been blessed with plenty of enthusiastic taste testers from the very beginning and have used their input to tweak the recipes. Now we are taking these recipes and scaling them up to share with lots of new friends.” BBM

THE REAL COST OF A BAD HIRE
T
and How to Avoid It!
Through all of the ebbs and flows of a business, the economy, and government, one thing that remains a constant for business owners and leaders is the reality that it is crucial to find good employees. Many might attempt to play the challenge to find good staff as generational, but throughout every generation searching for and finding good quality employees, it has always been important and challenging. As a result, iinn recent years many have spent time focusing on how to improve the hhiring iring process, which in turn can improve your organizations culture, ssave ave money, and significantly reduce your stress. While your personal stress is important, the two most significant motivations for improving your hiring process should be financial savings and improved culture within your organization. How often have you taken time to calculate the true financial cost of a bad hire? The truth is, few investigate this in great detail, but according to a survey by careerbuilder.com almost one-third of companies report a single bad hire costing more than $50,000. In that same study, they found that 41% of companies report a bad hire costing them in excess of $25,000. When you consider the time spent investing in the hiring process, on-boarding and training a new hire, plus a potential severance package and numerous hours of stress for supervisors and managers, it is easy to see how those numbers can add up quickly. These numbers reiterate why each company should regularly review their hiring process and make improvements as necessary. The other primary reason has to do with your organization’s culture. Leadership guru, Dave Ramsey, speaks about this in great detail. A bad hire can have a tremendous impact through potential office gossip, unresolved disagreements in the office, lack of team purpose, and a sense of leadership sanctioning incompetence or laziness. While all of these will likely occur over time, it is important for leadership within every organization to attempt to limit the harmful impact it can have on your organizations culture. For leaders, it will be especially important to make strong hires and reduce the amount of sanctioned incompetence and laziness. Everyone can remember an experience of someone in the office, on the team, etc., who was not pulling their own weight due to lack of effort or inability to perform. When this occurs over time, it can drain the will and spirit of a group, which in turn will keep your team from

experiencing their potential. Again, Dave Ramsey gives some valuable advice to consider when evaluating your hiring process. Dave says, “Be the tortoise, not the hare; slow and steady wins in business.” Within Dave’s organization, they sometimes have up to 14 interviews with a candidate before making a hire. Wait, I know what you are thinking, 14 is probably too many for most organizations. However, one way you can look at interviewing is like dating. On a first date, everyone puts their best self forward; it tends to be numerous dates down the line before you begin to see a more honest representation of your date. While 14 is likely more interviews than you have time for, being sure to have multiple interviews is important. Likewise, if you are able to have multiple people on your team participate in the interview process it can be extremely helpful in gathering different perspectives on a potential hire. Be sure to have an open forum in which those who participate are able to give honest feedback of the candidate. Additionally, take advantage of the tools at your disposal such as conducting a personality and strength analysis. These can provide valuable feedback that is helpful to know about a candidate on the front end. For example, if you are looking for a sales person, a candidate might be able to present well in a one-time interview, but if they are a cautious beaver personality, you might end up with a problem. It does not matter what industry you are in, searching for and hiring new staff is challenging for us all. Our hope at Akin, Doherty, Klein & Feuge, P.C., is that you would take some time to evaluate your hiring process as a way to benefit your business financially and culturally. Two and a half years after the completion of the Patrick Heath Public Library, the Boerne Public Library Foundation has received a generous donation from the Majestic Ranch Arts Foundation to begin Phase II of the library’s master plan. The funding will be used to build a 250 seat amphitheater will be added to the library’s campus to further the library’s goals of providing cultural enrichment, access to arts education and a greater sense of community. “We were disappointed when the amphitheater didn’t fit in the library’s initial construction budget, but never stopped imagining the impact that it could have on the community. We are so happy that the Boerne Public Library Foundation was able to secure the funds needed for the amphitheater”, said Kelly Skovbjerg, director of the Patrick Heath Pulic Library. “Our Boerne public library, and all it has to offer, is a major asset in this community,” said Mayor Mike Schultz. “People of all ages come to the library for fellowship, learning, entertainment, and contemplation. With funding for the construction of additional outdoor amenities like this, we are adding the icing to the cake.” “This is just one more example of our determination to support the library and our shared vision for the library campus. We anticipated that it would be several more years before we would have the funds needed for construction of the amphitheater. Through the generosity of the Majestic Ranch Arts Foundation, we are ready to go today!” said Rusty Meador, Boerne Public Library Foundation President. “The foundation understands the important role the library plays in our community. It isn’t every day that small towns get to benefit from a library like ours,” Meador added. “We are committed to supporting the programs and services that the library provides and to partnering with other organizations to provide more exposure to the arts. It’s a win-win for everyone.” “The Majestic Ranch property sold several months ago and this project offered our foundation a way to continue the legacy of the Ranch’s mission to ‘promote and support arts in Boerne, the Hill Country and surrounding areas by providing exposure to the arts’, said Peter Cowger, President of the Board of Directors of the Majestic Ranch Arts Foundation. “The Patrick Heath Public Library is a community hub and supported by so many people in the community because of the amazing programs and services it provides. The focus on arts through programs like Live at the Library, a free monthly concert series, and many other programs made it easy for us to make the decision to support the Patrick Heath Public Library’s efforts to construct an amphitheater on the grounds of the library.” The amphitheater is planned to be situated behind the Bookshop Under the Windmill. Unlike any other outdoor amphitheaters in our area, this amphitheater will be equipped with state of the art sound and lighting that can welcome a variety of performing arts. “Over the last year, our events have been attracting larger crowds from outside of Kendall County”, said Rusty Meador. “We imagine the addition of this unique venue will help keep that trend going.” BBM

CITY OF BOERNE WEBSITE HAS NEW LOOK The City of Boerne website just got a make-over and goes live this week. Using CivicPlus, a professional website design service that works specifically with city governments, Boerne is hoping the new website look and functionality will attract more users. Several new features have been added to make the site more interactive, but the basic city information is still available. People that are web savvy and use a certain website frequently will usually spend less time navigating the changes than those visitors that visit the website less often. Many of us get accustomed to looking for information in the same location, or under the same heading each time, so when the look is different, or the titles are changed, we get lost and frustrated. Preventing this frustration was a major objective. Because a government services website is loaded with such a large variety of content, categorizing information in a way that is logical, or makes sense, to website visitors is always a challenge. This new design is intended to make searching for city information easier. The site is more colorful and includes more pictures featuring local buildings, parks, events, and people. City staff is encouraging website visitors to explore the new website to see all of the information that is available. If, at first, you don’t find what you are looking for, enter some key words in the “search” box at the top of the home page, and in most cases you will be directed to just what you need. Staff will continue to make changes and upgrades based on feedback from users. Please contact us by email or call 249-9511 and ask for the IT Department.

Landscaping that Works! FUNCTIONAL LANDSCAPING T HAT CUT S ENERGY BILLS,
W
ADDS PRIVACY AND REDUCES WAT ER WAST E by Taylor Davis
Well thought out landscaping can do so much more than simply beautify the exterior of your home. By incorporating smarter, more efficient landscape design strategies you can help to conserve natural resources as well as save money. Here are some tips on how to put your landscaping to work for you! CREATE A NATURAL WINDBREAK: Planting trees and shrubs the correct distance from your home will create an efficient windbreak and can help lower your heating costs. Evergreen trees and shrubs are ideal for use as windbreaks as their foliage tends to slow down and redirect the wind. To know the correct distance to plant a windbreak from your home, figure out the mature height of the plants you will be using and then plant them at least twice that distance away from you home’s exterior. PLANT SHADE TREES: Cut your air conditioning costs during the summer with a properly planted shade tree. Consider planting deciduous trees along the south and west-facing sides of your home for shade, this will assist in keeping it cool and help to save money on air conditioning. Deciduous trees shed their leaves seasonally so in the warmer months the leaves will provide shade for your home, and in the winter when the leaves fall off the sun’s rays will still be able to reach your home to warm it up. Shading an air conditioning unit with plantings is another great way to save money. According to the US Department of Energy, this can increase its efficiency by as much as 10 percent. UTILIZE RAINWATER HARVESTING: Lower your water bill and redirect rainwater runoff into your landscape by collecting and using rainwater to water your landscaping and gardens. Harvesting rainwater helps to restore the natural process by putting the water back to where it would have gone pre-construction. Installing a rain barrel directly under a downspout is one of the more efficient methods to harvest rainwater. Rain barrels come in many different sizes and a vast array of materials to suit your specific needs. INCORPORATE NATURAL FENCING: Increase the privacy of your home while beautifying its exterior by using plants to create a privacy barrier. For year-round privacy evergreens work well. If your privacy needs tend to be more seasonal you have a larger selection of plant options such as tall, ornamental grasses. The greater the mix of plants the more visually interesting your natural fencing will be. INCORPORATE WATER SAVING DESIGN: Xeriscaping is landscaping that is specifically designed to conserve water, improve soil and preserve as much existing vegetation as possible. This type of design will utilize plants that naturally thrive in our region.

Native plants have evolved to thrive in local conditions, by putting them to use in your landscape design they should require less ongoing maintenance than non-native plants. PUT DOWN SOME MULCH: Mulch is great for your landscaping because it not only promotes plant health, but conserves water too. It reduces weeds and soil erosion, suppresses some plant disease and also can moderate the temperature of the soil. Organic mulch will also feed the soil as it breaks down, adding nutrients and organic matter which should result in healthier plants.BBM
