Merry Christmas

B

Boerne is going all out this Christmas season and I wanted to dedicate this December issue to all that our town has to offer to make your season bright! There are numerous light displays, holiday concerts, of course the three fun-filled weekends of Dickens on Main, and so much more! Don’t forget to shop our local businesses for your holiday gifts as well! These businesses are the heart and soul of our community so let’s show our support the best we can this holiday season. We have put together a fun local gift guide with some great ideas for everyone on your list! Check it out starting on page 8. We are quickly approaching the end of 2021 as well. That means taxes and resolutions, and we have two great articles on both topics! Ron Warden of Edward Jones helps us figure out what some good financial resolutions to set for 2022 would be on page 11. On Page 26, Leslie Harris of ADKF keeps us informed of changes to be aware of as we work on those 2021 taxes. Also in this issue we have lots of local news and info, some fun Christmas Facts and a full Calendar of Events. May you all have a Merry Christmas and a blessed 2022,

WHAT ARE YOUR FINANCIAL RESOLUTIONS FOR 2022?

A

As you know, 2021 was full of challenges. We were still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic when supply chains shut down and inflation heated up. So, if you’re like many people, you might not be sorry to see the year come to a close. But now it’s time to look ahead to a brighter 2022. And on a personal level, you may want to set some New Year’s resolutions. You might resolve to improve your health and diet, and possibly learn some new skills, but why not make some financial resolutions, too? Here are a few ideas to consider: Prepare for the unexpected. If you haven’t already created an emergency fund, now may be a good time to start. Ideally, you’d like to have three to six months’ worth of living expenses in this fund, with the money kept in a low-risk, liquid account. (If you’re retired, you may want your emergency fund to contain up to a year’s worth of living expenses.) Once you’ve got this fund established, you may be able to avoid dipping into long-term investments to pay for short-term needs, such as costly home or auto repairs or large medical bills. Boost your retirement savings. The pandemic caused many us to reevaluate our ability to eventually enjoy the retirement lifestyles we’ve envisioned. In fact, 33% of those planning to retire soon said they started to contribute even more to their retirement savings during the pandemic, according to a study from Age Wave and Edward Jones. This year, if you can afford it, increase your contributions to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan. Reduce your debt load. The less debt you carry, the more money you’ll have available to support your lifestyle today and save and invest for tomorrow. So, this year, resolve to cut down on

your existing debts and avoid taking on new ones whenever possible. You can motivate yourself by measuring your progress – at the beginning of 2022, record your total debts and then compare this figure to your debt load at the start of 2023. If the numbers have dropped, you’ll know you were making the right moves. Don’t overreact to the headlines. A lot can happen during a year. Consider inflation – it shot up in 2021, but it may well subside in 2022. If you changed your investment strategy last year to accommodate the rise in inflation, would you then have to modify it again when prices fall? And inflation is just one event. What about changes in interest rates? How about new legislation coming out of Washington? And don’t forget extreme weather events, such as wildfires and floods. Any or all of these occurrences can affect the financial markets in the short term, but it just doesn’t make sense for you to keep changing the way you invest in response to the news of the day. Instead, stick with a strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. You may need to adjust this strategy over time, in response to changes in your own life, but don’t let your decisions be dictated by external events. These aren’t the only financial resolutions you can make – but following them may help you develop positive habits that can help you face the future with confidence. health

S

by Dr. Leigh Ann Greenberg, RPh – Annie’s Apothecary

Stress and depression can ruin your holidays and hurt your health. Planning, being realistic, and seeking support can help ward off stress and depression. Maintaining nutritional support is also a must during this time. Depression can occur during the winter which is typically termed SADD or Seasonal-Affective Depressive Disorder. Symptoms usually start in the fall and continue during the winter. These symptoms may include hopelessness, increased appetite with subsequent weight gain, increased sleep, less energy, and ability to concentrate, social withdrawal, unhappiness or irritability. Although most physicians will prescribe an anti-depressant for just a few months, we would rather recommend vitamin D3 supplementation. You can have your vitamin D levels tested at your physician’s office. The goal level of 25 (OH) vitamin D is 50-60 ng/ml. It may take doses of 2000-10,000 IU/day to get an optimal level. Your doctor may prescribe a weekly dose of 50,000 IU or you can take a pharmaceutical grade vitamin D3 daily to keep your blood level more stable. Getting repeat lab tests will determine how much vitamin D3 supplementation is necessary for you. Vitamin D will help keep the winter blues at bay, but it will also boost your immune system and help you cope with stress. Stress can be managed during the holidays by creating realistic goals for parties, gifts, decorations, and budgets. Procrastination will inevitably lead to higher stress levels, so try to plan ahead of time. Don’t forgo the healthy habits you have spent all year establishing. Overindulgence will only add to your guilt and stress. By eating a healthy snack before parties and staying well-hydrated, you can cut down on the amount of sweets and drinks you consume. Don’t forget to continue getting plenty of sleep and exercise too. When our bodies are stressed, vitamin and

hormone deficiencies become more apparent. Our bodies’ resources are used up much quicker. Maintaining hormonal balance, such as thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and cortisol, will keep you even-keeled. The B vitamins are essential during stressful periods. A pharmaceutical grade B-complex along with a B12 (preferably by injection or under the tongue) may keep your energy levels up so you can tackle the long holiday to-do lists. Adaptogenic herbs can be useful to calm anxiety that is often associated with stress. Rhodiola rosea, Panax gensing, and Ashwaganda may support the body’s adaptogenic response to stress. Elevated levels of our stress hormone, cortisol, can also contribute to extra pounds; therefore, make sure you allow yourself relaxation time to bring those stress levels down. Cortisolv is a supplement we carry that may help your body resist and recover from the effects of everyday stress. Components of Cortisolv have been shown to support healthy cortisol levels, help alleviate occasional fatigue, promote mental clarity, and support relaxation and restful sleep. The holiday season can be a very enjoyable and memorable time to spend with family if you do not forget to take care of your body’s needs too. Keep up your healthy habits all year long. Keep your nutrient levels up and you are sure to have fun this holiday season! BBM

taxes

2021 Tax Changes

T

by Leslie Harris – ADKF

The 2021 tax season is just a few weeks away; are you missing out on any deductions? There have been numerous changes to tax law over the past two years, and it can be difficult to keep up. Below is a brief summary of some of the changes that may affect your 2021 tax return. Do you have children under the age of 17? Then you may receive the child tax credit. Prior to 2021, the child tax credit was a refundable credit received on your tax return if you met certain requirements. Early in 2021, congress passed a bill that paid eligible taxpayers half of the credit amount over the last six months of the year (the advanced child tax credit). Eligible taxpayers received monthly payments of $300 per child under the age of 6, and $250 per child between the ages of 6 and 17 beginning July 2021. Though these payments are not taxable, they will have an impact on your 2021 tax return. The advanced child tax credit payments were issued automatically based on the information the IRS received from your prior year tax return. If in 2021, the number of eligible children being claimed on your return changes, your credit will be adjusted accordingly. The credit may also be affected if your household income increases above the threshold amounts. The credit starts to phase out for single taxpayers whose adjusted gross income over $75,000 and married taxpayers over $150,000. If the amount you received in advance payments is more than the eligible credit amount, the

26

B oerne B usiness M onthly | December 2021

excess amount will be reported on your 2021 tax return as additional income tax, reducing your refund amount, or increasing the amount you owe. If you received any advanced payments, the IRS will issue a letter or form detailing the amount received that you will need to provide to your tax preparer. Another change for eligible parents that has not been mentioned as often as the advanced child tax payments is the changes to the child and dependent care credit. Historically, the child and dependent care credit was a non-refundable credit which resulted in a maximum credit of $1,050 (35% of $3,000 eligible childcare expenses) for once child or $2,100 (35% of $6,000 eligible childcare expenses) if you had more than one child. Beginning in 2021, the credit is now refundable, and the percentage and amount of eligible expenses has been increased significantly, resulting in a maximum credit of $4,000 for one child (50% of $8,000 eligible childcare expenses), or $8,000 (50% of $16,000 eligible childcare expenses) for two or more. The 50% child and dependent care credit begins to phase out if your adjusted gross income is more than $125,000, and completely phases out if your adjusted gross income is more than $438,000. If you think you may qualify for this credit, check out the child and dependent care credit FAQs for information on qualifying expenses and what you will need to provide to your tax preparer. For those of you that are past the child rearing stage of your life, don’t worry, the IRS did not leave you out. Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) are back! For 2021, the IRS decided to remove the option to suspend Required Minimum Distributions from tax-qualified defined contribution retirement plans and accounts. If you are older than 72, and delayed your RMDs due to the CARES Act, you are required to take your first RMD by the end of 2021. If you turned 72 in 2021, you are required to take your first RMD by April 1, 2022; each subsequent RMD must be taken by December 31. If you delay your first RMD until April 2022, you will receive two distributions in 2022, which could affect your tax liability. If your 2022 income is projected to be lower, you may want to delay your first RMD, otherwise it may be advantageous to take it before year end 2021. If you are unsure if, and when, you are required to take distributions, contact your financial advisor, as the penalties for failing to take your required minimum distribution is equal to 50% of the missed RMD amount. So that last one wasn’t great news, but if you are required to take those distributions, and you are feeling charitable, you can always make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD is a direct transfer from your retirement account to a qualified charity. This transaction satisfies your required minimum distribution for the year and excludes the RMD from taxable income. QCDs can be beneficial even if you don’t itemize. It’s a win-win for everyone. QCDs must be made by 12/31 and can be facilitated through your financial advisor. Among the changes previously mentioned, there are three topics being discussed at this time in Washington: capital gains, retirement planning, and estate and gift taxation. The proposed changes will affect higher income taxpayers, so if

your income is less than $500,000 ($1,000,000 if married filing jointly) and your estate is worth less than $3,500,000, you don’t have anything to worry about at this time. If you fall into the higher income category, unfortunately there is not much planning that can be done at this time as there are changes being made every day. It is simply impossible to say at this time what the final decision will look like. However, it is important to mention that if the tax reform goes through, it may take affect the day it is signed, affecting your 2021 tax liability. If you have any questions about any of the changes mentioned in this article, check out the frequently asked questions at www. irs.gov, or visit our website for updates and tax saving tips. Though our process has changed with social distancing, and contactless deliveries, we were so excited to give back to our community again, especially with the hard times the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to so many families.
