401(k) Confusion:
M
Roth or Pre-Tax? Casey Keller, CFA – Investment Advisor, Covenant
More employer 401(k) plans are now offering the choice to save with pre-tax dollars or an after-tax option, known as the Roth 401(k). If you are confused about which to choose, you are not alone. This is one of the most common questions we get asked. To be fair, there is no perfect answer. That is, unless you know what tax bracket you will be in for the rest of your life, what future tax laws will be, the future growth rate of your savings, how much you will spend the rest of your life, and when you will die! While the Roth 401(k) may not make sense for everyone, below are many considerations and why it may make sense for you and your circumstances. As always, consult a financial advisor to get the optimal strategy before making a decision. First, let’s start with the basics. Pre-tax 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income, and therefore reduce your tax liability during the tax year you make the contributions. Roth contributions, on the other hand, are not subtracted from your income and therefore, you must increase your tax withholding or you'll likely be surprised with a higher tax bill (or lower refund) come tax time. For example, if your salary is $100,000 and you contribute $10,000 to a traditional 401(k), you'll only be taxed on $90,000 of income. If you contribute to the Roth 401(k), your taxable income will remain at $100,000. If you are really needing a tax break, the Pre-tax/traditional 401(k) is obviously attractive, but that is not the whole story. Here are some reasons to opt for the Roth 401(k): • Future tax-free withdrawals - Roth 401(k) withdrawals will eventually be tax and penalty free at age 59 ½, assuming you’ve had the account open for 5 years. • Effectively creates additional "forced" savings - As mentioned above, when contributing to a 401(k) with pretax dollars, you obviously save money on
8
B oerne B usiness M onthly | January 2020
your current year’s taxes. BUT, unless you are very intentional, this tax savings will get spent throughout the year on stuff and not saved. If you change to Roth 401(k) contributions, you’ll likely need to increase your tax withholding on your paycheck (Form W-4). Think of this “cost” as an investment towards a more tax-free future. Most people don’t even notice the difference and you probably won’t either. • You own ALL of the Roth - This is similar to the first bullet point, but from a different perspective. A traditional 401(k) with a $100,000 balance is not the same as a Roth 401(k) with a balance of $100,000. Even though they both look the same when adding up total net worth or total savings, the government will always "own" a percentage of a traditional 401(k) balance because you cannot withdraw from it without paying a "toll" (a.k.a. taxes). This is not the case with a Roth 401(k). • Roth 401(k)s and Roth IRAs are inherited income tax-free, whereas traditional 401(k)/IRAs continue to get taxed on withdrawals beyond your lifetime. This can magnify tax savings when you consider multiple generations. A Roth savings may be used in your lifetime, but if not, your family can inherit these assets income tax-free. Keep in mind that the IRS requires heirs to take distributions from
Roths, but they are not taxable. It is possible Roth IRA assets saved today could survive for quite some time, maybe even benefit a couple of generations, tax-free. • Any employer match always goes to Pre-Tax/traditional 401(k), not Roth 401(k) - When contributing to a 401(k), regardless of whether it’s pre-tax or Roth, it’s best not to leave “free money” on the table. In other words, make sure to contribute at least as much as the employer will match. Having said that, ALL EMPLOYER contributions are always pre-tax and will never go into the Roth 401(k) “bucket”. This may sound like a negative, but it’s generally good to have different account types and sources of potential income in retirement. Some argue that a Roth 401(k) could be worse than a pre-tax/traditional 401(k) if future tax rates are lower when you retire or your income in retirement is significantly lower than during your working years. Instead of speculating on where future tax rates will be and how much your retirement income will be, having both a Roth nest egg and a pretax/traditional 401(k) nest egg creates some balance and reduces risk, no matter what happens. If you’re in a low tax bracket during retirement, you could choose to live off and deplete the pre-tax/ traditional 401(k) assets first, while allowing the Roth 401(k) assets to continue growing. If that is the case, you will pay low (or maybe even zero) taxes later in life and your family will inherit more tax-free assets. If the opposite is true and you are facing a higher tax bracket during retirement, you could choose to spend more of the Roth 401(k) assets to manage the taxes first. Another potential benefit of the Roth 401(k) is that it may be a great vehicle for saving for educational purposes for a child or grandchild. If your overall savings are limited each year, using a Roth 401(k) can give you the option of saving for retirement or education. Of course, there are several factors to consider, but most individuals don’t think of a Roth 401(k) as a savings vehicle for college, just retirement. While using a Roth 401(k) may be more beneficial for a younger individual, if you are closer to retirement age, the Roth 401(k) is still compelling if your entire nest egg is lacking Roth dollars. Having some Roth money will allow you flexibility for expenses during retirement to help manage your overall taxes. Also, since the Roth 401(k) balance may be a smaller part of your overall net worth, a more growth-oriented investment strategy with the Roth dollars could make sense to aim for longer term growth and allow this tax-free bucket to grow while other assets are used in earlier years of retirement. Some would say that saving taxes today by contributing pre-tax dollars in your 401(k) would be “a bird in the hand”. One could argue the opposite is true, and state it as being “pennywise and pound foolish”. Both could be true and our recommendation is to seek the guidance of an advisor because “two heads are better than one”!BBM Casey Keller is an investment advisor at Covenant. PERSONALIZED SKINCARE AND INNOVATIVE TREATMENTS FOR YOUR BEST SKIN YET! by Lauren Stumberg | photos by Ron Pritchett
Let’s face it…skincare can be intimidating! Do you want to start an anti-aging skincare routine, but not sure where to start? Do you find yourself being overwhelmed by the vast selection of products and services? With all the options out there, it’s hard to know what actually works and what is a waste of money. Having a knowledgeable aesthetician you can trust is the key to achieving the results you are looking for.
16
B oerne B usiness M onthly | January 2020
Claudia Heyne, owner of The Cottage Door, knows that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to skincare. “I enjoy educating my clients and working with them to choose products and services that are going to get them real, noticeable results,” said Heyne. According to Claudia, “I became and aesthetician because I noticed myself beginning to age. How I was looking on the outside didn’t match the age I felt on the inside. I wanted
to know about skincare and have access to these anti-aging products and services not only for myself, but to help others as well.” In the spring of 2016, Heyne opened The Cottage Door, a charming boutique spa located in downtown Boerne. “I had worked for larger spas, but many of them wanted me to push certain products and the skincare was very impersonal. That’s not why I got into this business, I wanted to be able to truly help others with their skin concerns.” At The Cottage Door, Claudia offers everything from facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and waxing to more cutting edge treatments like Cryoskin, Fibroblasting and coming in January the Hyaluron Pen. “I cannot stress enough the importance of regular facials, chemical peels and quality products when it comes to overall skin health and minimizing those fine lines and wrinkles. Those are the basic building blocks to any good skincare routine.” Heyne also has been expanding her service offerings to include more results-oriented options for her clients. “These services allow me to achieve some really amazing results without surgery or fillers and very little to no downtime,” she added. According to Claudia, “I began offering Cryoskin last spring and have seen some very dramatic changes among my clients.”
Cryoskin works by using sub-zero temperatures to destroy body fat. This science is used to provide slimming, cellulite and facial treatments with incredible results. It is completely non-invasive and works with your body’s natural systems, cooling the skin just enough to reduce fat whilst improving the appearance of your skin. It can be used in three modes, slimming, toning and face. The Slim feature can slim pretty much any area on your body and most people lose at least an inch in their first session. The Cryoskin Tone setting is effective for drastically reducing the appearance of cellulite and shaping those tough areas that diet and exercise just can’t reach. The Face mode can help to improve your complexion, reducing pore size and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It can even visibly reduce a double chin! “I like to tell my clients that there are no magic solutions, however Cryoskin offers a really great jumping off point for weight loss and is excellent for fine tuning some of those stubborn areas that seem to be resistant to diet and exercise. In order for the results to last though, you need to be committed to following the guidelines of the Cryoskin process, or else it will negate what you just did,” added Heyne. Another cutting-edge treatment that is now offered at The Cottage Door is Fibroblasting. This treat-

During the process, a plasma flash (small electrical charge) creates controlled, light damage to the epidermis or upper layer of the skin. This stimulates fibroblast cells to produce more collagen to repair the skin. Collagen then continues to generate for four to six weeks after the treatment resulting in lifted, younger, smoother skin. During the treatment, many plasma arc dots are placed close together. These dots form crusts, which take approximately seven days to fall off. Unlike fillers that need to be redone periodically, the results of Fibroblasting are permanent and only need to be redone as the natural aging process takes place. “Fibroblasting is truly amazing. There is a small amount of downtime, but when you compare a few days to the time it takes to recover from plastic surgery there really is no comparison. I have been seeing superb results after just one treatment on my clients, but multiple treatments spaced about eight weeks apart can be done to achieve the desired result,” said Claudia. “This is a wonderful alternative to surgery and fillers. To see this loose skin literally shrink before my eyes has been very rewarding. With Fibroblasting, you don’t have to worry about the scars that come with surgery, or risk the overcontinued on page 18

done look and the looser the skin, the better the results!” Fibroblasting can be used to treat a number of skin concerns such as wrinkles, crow’s feet, forehead and smile lines, under eye bags and loose and saggy eyelids. Apart from the facial skin, it reduces the appearance of stretch marks, can tighten the dreaded mommy tummy and really tighten any area of the body where loose, saggy skin is a problem. Coming this January, Heyne will also be adding Hyaluron Pen treatments to her list of services. This innovation deposits hyaluronic acid filler into the epidermal and upper dermal layers of the skin without traditional needles or injections. Ideal for clients that are frightened or uncomfortable with needles, this pain free treatment is less invasive and fast, and allows clients to plump and fill their lips, fine lines and wrinkles. Through the pressure technology the pen uses pressure, which causes the hyaluronic acid to turn into nano scale molecules and inserts the hyaluronic acid filler through the skin. According to Heyne, “The Hyaluron Pen can be used to create volume, shape and lift. It is perfect for lip augmentations and reducing wrinkles, filling forehead lines, the 11 lines, smile lines, and can even be used to contour the nose for a nonsurgical ‘nose job’.” With this treatment, the hyaluronic acid only reaches the papillary layer of the dermis making it a safe treatment with no risk of occlusion and no sharp tips to puncture blood vessels. The results may be slightly less dramatic than fillers, but it is completely safe a free of many of the side effects and risks that come with fillers. Another benefit is that hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar found in the human body and the main structural element of connective tissue. Its function is to attract water and keep skin hydrated, plump and youthful. Claudia added, “As we age, the body decreases the amount of hyaluronic acid and collagen fibers. They dry up and become thinner, resulting in loss of hydration and elasticity, resulting in sagging skin and wrinkles. By adding hyaluronic acid into the skin we revive the collagen and promote a fresher, plumper effect.” Heyne also uses and sells the Glo Therapeutics line of products at The Cottage Door. She added, “It is a really

consistent brand that offers very effective results for a reasonable price. I try to keep my products very clean and I like that the Glo products are almost 100% natural. It is a very straight forward brand that is not complicated to use.” Every product or service offered at The Cottage Door, Heyne has used or tried on herself. “How can I tell my clients that these treatments or these products work if I haven’t tried them out first hand? I am not into fad skincare, I have to know that what I am recommending is going to provide results.” Claudia builds a relationship with each of her clients. She offers free consultations and blocks off an hour and a half for her services. “I want to take the time to really examine the specific needs of my customers. No two people are the same, so it’s important to get to know each client, find out what their goals are and then work together with them to get results.” Heyne tries to educate her clients and encourage them to be realistic about their results. She ends by saying, “Good skincare is a progressive thing, you must be consistent. Much of the results happen outside of the spa as well, you need to live a healthy lifestyle to achieve the best results.” According to Claudia, January is always a good time to start a new skincare program. “Not only are people in the frame of mind and motivated this time of the year, but procedures such as chemical peels and Fibroblasting are best done before summer gets here and the south Texas heat and sun exposure are less.” Whether you are looking to jump start your weight loss and firm up your skin with Cryoskin, start a preventative or anti-aging program or just learn more about how best to take care of your skin, the time is now! Easy Tips for a Healthier You in 2020 from Ideal Health Boerne
A
As we enter into the New Year, many people make resolutions to lose weight or to live a healthier lifestyle. The folks at Ideal Health Boerne share a few helpful tips to get you started on your journey: DRINK UP! Drink water, we recommend a minimum of 64oz a day. However, if you are highly active or trying to lose weight we recommend 100-120oz a day. GET A GOOD NIGHT’S REST. Shoot for 6-8 hours a day when possible. Using an eye pillow or weighted blanket to help with restlessness is a biggie! It will help you relax and keep you rested. STAY ACTIVE. We’re not talking hours at the gym, but go for a brisk walk or try to squeeze in activity when you can. Ideal Protein recommends 120 minutes a week in whatever combination works for you – ten minutes here or there or break it up in to larger chunks. PLAN AHEAD. Whether it be meal prep for the week or just having your dinners planned out ahead of time, if you have a plan you are more likely to stick to it! Ideal Protein suggests that even when not dieting to use at least one meal replacement a day. Everyone typically eats at least one meal a day “on the go” and that can mean upwards of 1,000 calories at a drive through! Replacing that “on the go” meal with a high quality shake like the ones from Ideal Protein can bring that down to 120 calories with 20g of protein! If your goals for the New Year include losing weight, why not get a little extra help along the way. Ideal Health Boerne helps you lose the weight and then keep it off with their threephase protocol: 1. Weight Loss 2. Stabilization to help the body accept it’s new weight and 3. A year maintaining your weight loss. Their medically developed protocol is a short-term plan with a beginning, middle and end. Call today for your initial weight loss assessment and see if their weight loss protocol is right for you. BBM

He credits the “crazy talented” people that are singing his arrangements for this success and while he claims the blend and mix of the voices are stunning, “the sopranos are other worldly!” Soprano Tiffany Coburn describes her 20-year singing career with Disney, “I love what we do! As a performer at Disney with the Voices of Liberty, we represent patriotism and the love of a great country. We get to do this in a beautiful way that tugs at people’s emotions! I love music and I love live performance and I love the energy we produce as Team Voctave!” Your feet will be flying while watching The Tap Pack on Tuesday, March 17th, 2020. The sizzling show of mind-blowing tap dance, smooth vocals, a live swingin’ jazz band, and witty on-stage banter is inspired by the infamous “Rat Pack” (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Junior), The Tap Pack hails from Australia with a high-energy performance featuring five of Australia’s finest tap dancing performers. This ensemble will storm the stage bringing a new, invigorating energy to a timeless style. They are Old School Cool from the new Kings of Swing! They sing. They dance. They joke. Created by a three-person Australian team consisting of Jesse Rasmussen, Jordan Pollard, and Thomas Egan, and directed by Nigel Turner-Carroll, The Tap Pack has recently been featured on London’s West End, at the illustrious Peacock Theatre, after touring Berlin, Beijing and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This ensemble from “down under” also performed in their homeland at the iconic Sydney Opera House. The group “lit up the harbour” with their highly anticipated show that was sold out…and ended in standing ovations. “The Tap Pack are proudly Australian and to entertain in our home town was something we’ll never forget!” exclaims Rasmussen. 1031 EXCHANGES:
Y
Keep Equity Out of Uncle Sam’s Pocket by Eric McGraw, CPA – ADKF
Your business is changing, and so are your real estate needs. Maybe the office building you own is too small with the growth in employees? Or maybe you own multifamily housing units and want to change your investment strategy to commercial real estate? So how do you make these investments and keep the equity out of Uncle Sam’s Pocket? Maybe a 1031 exchange can help. WHAT IS A 1031 EXCHANGE? A 1031 exchange is a tax deferment strategy that can be used by investors in commercial and residential real estate. In brief, it allows investors to defer federal income taxes on the sale of a property, if the sale proceeds are used to purchase another property. WHY SHOULD I CARE? You will keep more of your money! By deferring federal income taxes generated from the sale of your property, you will be able to roll all your equity into a replacement property. If you sell property outside of an exchange, it is highly probable that Uncle Sam will want a share of the proceeds. Bottom line, if you own investment or commercial use property, you need to know about 1031 exchanges. WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW? As with any tax saving strategy, there are many rules that come into play. The basics are summarized below. Please note that there are many considerations not included in this article. • Both the property you sell and the property you buy as a replacement must be qualified property. In the past, taxpayers could use 1031 exchanges for vehicles and equipment, but that changed with the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Currently, only “real property” (IRS term) qualifies. Real property includes real estate of all kinds: land, houses, apartments, commercial buildings, etc. Mineral interests may also qualify in some circumstances.
26
B oerne B usiness M onthly | January 2020
• The property you sell and the replacement property you buy DO NOT have to be identical. For example, you can exchange land for a commercial building, or a commercial building for a rental house. • Both the property you sell and the property you buy must be held for investment or commercial use. Your personal home will not qualify under most circumstances (multi-family housing or homes on acreage are possible exceptions). Property that is being flipped or built for sale will not qualify under most circumstances. • It is possible to go through a 1031 exchange and defer only a portion of the taxes. In order to completely defer taxes, the following conditions must be met: Cash: All proceeds from the sale must be transferred to a 1031 intermediary (discussed below) and subsequently used to purchase a qualifying replacement property. Replacement property: The value of the replacement property must be greater than the fair market value of the property sold. Debt: If debt was associated with the sale property, debt of the same amount or greater must be associated with the replacement property. To summarize: trade up, not down, don’t pay down debt, and don’t take cash out at closing. • If non-qualifying property is included in the transaction, some of the tax may not be deferred. For example, if you exchange a ranch for an apartment complex, there may be vehicles or equipment included in the sale of the ranch that are not qualifying property. As a result, tax may be incurred on the portion of the sale proceeds attributable to the vehicles and equipment. • The property you sell and the property you buy must be held by the same taxable entity. For example, you can own both properties in your personal name, or in a company you own. You
cannot sell a property owed by Company A and then purchase the replacement property in Company B, unless Company B is a disregarded entity owned by Company A. • There are time limits that must be followed: 45-Day Identification Window: After you close on the sale of your property, you have 45 days to identify the replacement property. 180-Day Purchase Window: After you close on the sale of your property, you have 180 days to close on the replacement property. Important Note: Filing your tax return can cut this window short. Make sure that your tax professional is aware that you are working on a 1031 exchange and that your return may need to be extended. WHO CAN HELP ME WITH THIS? In order to complete a 1031 exchange, you must work with a qualified intermediary to hold the proceeds of the initial sale until you close on a replacement property. There are quite a few companies that offer this service; just do an internet search for “1031 broker.” Many of these companies can also assist you with finding replacement properties or offer other value-added services. It would also be prudent to communicate early and often with your tax professional in order to make sure that you complete a transaction that qualifies as a 1031 exchange, and that the exchange is reported properly to the IRS. Please feel free to call ADKF at 210-829-1300. We are here to help! BBM

Texas to see less but solid economic growth in 2020, says REC
T
The U.S. and Texas economies are expected to slow in 2020 but still register solid positive growth, according to the Real Estate Center's 2020 Texas Housing & Economic Outlook. In an environment of slow economic growth and well-anchored inflation expectations, the Center expects interest rates to remain low with possibly another rate cut by the Federal Reserve of around 25 basis points. The rate cut will depend on whether weaker than anticipated economic growth occurs and/or if the trade disputes continue or escalate. Last year, the Center predicted a slowdown in the U.S. and Texas employment that will continue through 2020. The labor market should tighten with upward pressure on wage growth. The border metros will suffer from the U.S. and world manufacturing slowdown and low economic growth in Mexico. Headwinds related to trade relations and slowing global economic growth will create uncertainty for business investment and hamper economic growth in the process. Optimal Thyroid Levels Maintain Energy and Metabolism
C
by Dr. Leigh Ann Greenberg, RPh
Can’t seem to lose that extra weight? Feeling tired or sad? Do you have thin, brittle hair or nails or even cold intolerance? These are a few signs and symptoms of suboptimal thyroid production or hypothyroidism. According to the American Thyroid Association, over 12% of the US population will develop a thyroid condition in their lifetime. Women are 5 times more likely to have thyroid problems than men. Some research indicates that stress and inflammation can prevent your thyroid hormone, T4, from activating into the useable form, T3. Your healthcare provider can determine if there is a problem with your thyroid gland by using a blood test usually checked during your annual exam or when you have symptoms. Always ask for a copy of the blood work results. If you are having symptoms, but your doctor says your labs are normal, this doesn’t mean that it’s all in your head. Comparing your lab values over time may show a trend up or down, which may explain why you are having symptoms. Just because a lab value falls in the “normal” range doesn’t mean that it’s normal for you. Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) is commonly the only thyroid level drawn, but it has a wide reference range and optimal levels will fall closer to the center of the range. Other thyroid levels that should be ordered if TSH levels are not optimal (less than 2mIU/L) or you continue to have symptoms are Free T4, Free T3, and Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPO). These additional labs will allow you to see the whole picture. If you fall in the normal range, but still have symptoms you may benefit from over-the-counter supplements to help boost your thyroid to the right level for you. XymoDine™ is an iodine supplement which may enhance thyroid production. Iodine is used as a building block to help your body make T4 and T3 to keep your metabolism functioning in a balanced state. Another thyroid supplement, T-150, has natural thyroid hormone along with a small amount of iodine and selenium to help relieve your symptoms.

There are prescription medications that replace thyroid hormones also. You may have heard of or even tried Synthroid®, Levoxyl®, or Cytomel®. These synthetic medications only have one of the inactive form of thyoid, T4; therefore, it may be more difficult to achieve a balance if your body is not activating it to T3 efficiently. Armour® Thyroid is a prescription medication that has a mix of T4 and T3 from a porcine thyroid gland. The combination may help mimic the body’s natural way of producing these hormones. However, the strengths available may not work for everyone and porcine thyroid can be in short supply since it is a natural product. An accredited compounding pharmacy can make any T4/T3 combination prescribed by your healthcare provider. Lastly, addressing the stress and inflammation in your body can increase your thyroid activation efficiency and may improve autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s and Grave’s Disease which involve the thyroid gland. A functional approach is taken at Annie’s Apothecary by utilizing the Food Inflammation Test (FIT) to assess the foods that cause an inflammatory response in your body. Eliminating these foods and healing gut inflammation may also positively impact your thyroid hormone balance. See our ad this month for discounts on the FIT 132 & 22. Make sure to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about these options if you think you may be experiencing symptoms related to your thyroid. BBM
