publisher's note This issue marks the beginning of Boerne Business Monthly’s 14th year! They say that time flies when you’re having fun, so I must be having a blast because it is very hard for me to believe that I have been publishing BBM for that long! As I embark on this 14th year, it makes me smile to know that this is the 157th issue ‑ WOW! Just think of all of the local businesses we’ve featured since that first issue hit the streets in July of 2007. This issue we feature a brand new business that is making the Hill Country Mile experience just a bit more fun, the Boerne Trading Company! Also in this issue we help another local business, ADKF, celebrate their 30th Anniversary! Be sure to read the fun article on how Texas Hill Country Realty came up with a creative way to support a local 4-H group while giving them valuable life experience. On page 22, Ron Warden of Edward Jones shares advice on how to not let your investments take a summer “vacation, ” we have lots of great local news and info and a full Calendar of Events! I love Boerne, I love supporting our local small businesses and I love what I do! Thank you all for a great 14 years! Here’s to many more!!

congratulations

ADKF Celebrates 30th Anniversary with a Branding Refresh Summer 2021 marks the 30th year anniversary of San Antonio’s largest, locally owned public accounting firm.

A

ADKF’s founding partners, still active with the firm, Tom Akin, David Doherty, and Howard Klein, established the framework for success when they founded ADKF back in 1991. Since then, the firm has grown organically to a staff of 86 strong and a partner group of ten, totaling nearly 100 employees! Remaining dedicated to furthering the founders’ legacy through extraordinary personal service, has led the

charge with the recent rebrand and new mantra “With You All the Way.” With Scott Kopecky, CPA as Managing Partner and Joe Hernandez, CPA as Chief Operating Officer, ADKF underwent a complete rebranding over the course of 2020, changing its name to simply ADKF (in place of the founders’ names) and refocused on their values and mission to be an eternal part of their community. With a “let’s come together” attitude, ADKF was able to streamline work processes to deal with the workplace challenges that the pandemic had caused. This has afforded ADKF the opportunity to come out on top, being even better than before, and even opening more job opportunities. ADKF is the largest, locally owned public accounting firm in San Antonio, Texas, with branch offices in Boerne and New Braunfels. ADKF is a full-service CPA firm that provides a broad range of tax, audit, bookkeeping, tax controversy, and consulting services. BBM

FRESH FINDS, FUN VENDORS & FLAVORFUL TREATS

article by Lauren Stumberg | photos by Ron Pritchett Boerne’s Hill Country Mile constantly tops the lists of “must-dos” in the Texas hill country. Locals and visitors alike love to stroll, shop, eat and drink along this charming stretch of Main Street. The recent addition of the Boerne Trading Company has made this local attraction even more fun! Owners, Brad Dickey and Jennifer Blankenship, a local couple with an entrepreneurial spirit, (they also own The Bubble Tea Factory) sought to create a space full of unique finds from a hand-picked selection of vendors. Once they had secured the perfect spot, a historical building from the 1890’s located right in the center of Boerne’s busy Main Street, Brad and Jennifer quickly got to work! “We began reaching out to the businesses we had envisioned for the space. The store currently has about 20 vendors and we are proud of the eclectic mix of creativity that we have within the Boerne Trading pictured above: Some of the many vendors behind the fun goods and sweet treats you will find inside of the Boerne Trading Company!

Company,” said Brad. “Many of the businesses that we have here at BTC were on the verge of needing to do something bigger. They had grown beyond just having a weekend booth at a trade show or market days or had been doing online sales but were ready for a storefront. They were ready to take the next step, but maybe didn’t need an entire building. When we approached them with the idea of being able to be a part of something bigger it really appealed to them,” added Jennifer. According to vendor Erin Johnson of Sweet E’s Treats, “I have really enjoyed the friendships that have been made within BTC, as well as the business collaborations and feedback since being in the building.” Within the walls of the BTC are everything from Sunshine Woodworks’

BTC has hand-crafted soy blend candles and flameless wax melts from White Oak Co., stunning macramé wall hangings from Little Hazel-Knots, luxurious leather goods and pillows from Hill Country Designs, antiques by Trish and one-of-a-kind tables, furniture, cutting boards and coasters from Black-Ty Creations! One of the most special things about the Boerne Trading Company is that they have an entire room dedicated to kid vendors! “Our daughter, Bristol, started her own soap company this past September. We have been incredibly impressed with her drive and her work initiative. Along the way, it really opened our eyes to these other incredibly talented kids who are doing some really impressive things,” said Jennifer. The child vendors are treated exactly the same as the adult vendors as well, with the goal being to help them learn and grow. BTC requires them to have a business name and DBA, go get a Sales and Use permit and to get a Facebook and Instagram account. According to Jennifer, “I love that if you give a kid a chance they can really impress you with what they are capable of. I also feel like these kiddos will really have an advantage and can go far having already had this type of experience under their belt at such a young age! I have also been impressed with how much these kids are here, working their businesses and talking to customers. It’s definitely rewarding being able to watch them grow their businesses.” The kid vendors include Blankenship Soap Company offering handmade soaps, continued on page 18

bath bombs and bath salts, Angels from the Sea with beautiful seashell and epoxy keepsakes and jewelry, Last Resort Designs is a group of siblings that creates custom quilts, hot pads, tea towels and so much more, Mallory’s Boutique has a collection of fun earrings and jewelry, Wildrye sells grass-fed beef from his family ranch and Blue Oak Iron Works makes impressive chess boards, sling shots and other fun creations from wood and iron! And to put the icing on the cake, or should we say sprinkles on the ice cream, if it’s a tasty treat you are looking for then you are definitely in the right place! Not only does the Boerne Trading Company offer individual to-go charcuterie goodness from Bountiful Grazing and the most delightful hand-spun cotton candy from Sweet E’s Treats, there is an entire ice cream shop, Dip, located in the front room of the building! True to its name, Dip offers tasty soft serve ice cream that you can then dip in a selection of flavored dips and toppings. Currently they offer three dip flavors, Cotton Candy, Orange and Chocolate, but will soon offer six additional dip flavors that include Birthday Cake, Caramel, Butterscotch, Toasted Coconut, Blue Raspberry and Peanut Butter. For the toppings, choose from Cookie Monster, Grasshopper, Funfetti, Orange Cream, Brownie Lover and Cotton Candy – which includes some of Sweet E’s actual cotton candy on top! They offer a selection of ice cream floats too! Brad and Jennifer say that it has been fun watching the Boerne Trading Company come to be. “We love offering this amazing group of vendors a space where they can truly showcase their amazing talents and creations, offering up fun and unique treats on Main and giving Boerne another awesome spot to add to our hill country charm!” BBM

DON’T LET

Investments GO ON Vacation! courtesy of Edward Jones

N

Now that we’ve gained at least some space from the COVID-19 pandemic, summer travel is heating up. But while you might be eager to hit the road, you won’t want your investments to take a vacation – you need them to work hard for you consistently. But how can you make this happen?

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS:

Know your destination.“If you don't know where you want to go, then it doesn't matter which path you take.” This bit of wisdom, paraphrased from the classic children’s book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, may be appropriate for, say, hikers exploring a new landscape. But as an investor, it matters a great deal which path you take. If you only dabble in investing, occasionally putting some money into one investment or another, it will be difficult to build a portfolio that’s consistently working in your best interest. It’s important to create a long-term investment strategy based on where you want to go in life – that is, how long you plan to work, what sort of retirement lifestyle you envision, and so on. Match goals with investments. Some investments are designed to achieve certain goals. To illustrate: When you contribute to an IRA and a 401(k) or similar employersponsored plan, you’re investing for one specific, longterm goal: a comfortable retirement. While you can tap into these accounts for other purposes – though doing so might

22

incur immediate taxes and penalties – they are designed to provide you with income during your retirement years. Similarly, you may have other investments for other purposes, such as a 529 education savings plan. Here’s the key point: Goals-based investing, by its nature, can help ensure your portfolio is always working on your behalf, in the way you intended. Invest for growth. Ideally, hard work produces results, and one of the main results you want from your investments is growth – that is, you want your investments to appreciate in value so they can eventually help you meet your goals. But if you are overconcentrated in vehicles such as certificates of deposit (CDs) and government securities, you may end up lowering your growth potential. That’s not to say that CDs and Treasury bills are in some sense “lazy.” They can provide you with income and help you reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. But to achieve most of your goals, you’ll need a reasonable number of growth-oriented investments working for you, with the exact percentage based on your needs and life stages. Check your progress. How else can you ensure your investments aren’t just taking it easy? By checking up on them. If you follow a buy-and-hold strategy, your portfolio shouldn’t require many changes if it already reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Too much buying and selling could jeopardize your ability to follow a consistent, long-term strategy. However, “buy and hold” doesn’t mean “buy and forget.” By reviewing your portfolio at least once a year, you can determine if your investments are performing as they should. If they’re not working for you as you’d like, you may need to make some changes. If you’re traveling this summer, relax and enjoy yourself – but keep those investments working hard. BBM

HIRE A 4-H‘ER, THEY HAVE “GRIT”

T

Local Real Estate Firm Issues New Challenge for Kendall County 4-H Hippology Team

The Kendall County Hippology team recently placed 2nd at the Texas 4-H State Roundup! Anna Beth Muck was high point individual, Elizabeth McFarland was 5th and Lily Valentine was 9th. The team is looking for ways to raise funds to go to the National Finals in Ohio. “Lily and Corrie had sent me a picture of their win and I had the idea to issue them another challenge that would help them to raise money for their trip and give them another valuable life experience,” said Kathy Moore-Cloud, co-broker at Texas Hill Country Realty Co. According to Kathy, “We have an old farmhouse in Sisterdale that we are renovating. There is an old, huge detached cinder block laundry room that needed to be re-imagined! I knew I couldn’t ask for a better crew to work with, but the lingering question was ‘could they do it on their own’?” The 4-H’ers were given a 5-day challenge, before with the reward of earning $500 each for their upcoming trip to the National Finals! Moore-Cloud instructed the girls to go with an old farmhouse, black and white style and this got their minds churning with ideas! The first three days were spent clearing the room out, cleaning the walls and doors, power washing everything and putting a fresh coat of white paint on everything before the decorating could even begin. The room also has an old tin roof that needed the holes plugged and the eaves sealed. “The entire process was definitely a learning experience for this team,” said Kathy. “Have you ever tried to paint cinder block? It’s a thirsty piece of construction for sure, sucking up paint like there’s no tomorrow! Then, oops! Somehow paint droplets got on the cement floor and the girls were down on their hands and knees scraping it all off. With all this work they were a little behind schedule when it was time to go shopping for the decorative items on Thursday, but they caught up quickly and even made the finishing touches by framing the old roller-style windows in black. They

finished the project with time to spare!” The entire project was a learning experience for this team and really put them to the test. “They experienced trial and error, endurance, patience and leadership. All of these are skills that they learn in 4-H as well. They are “full on” with their animal projects, and in their Hippology team, winning ribbons left and right. But painting, refurbishing, design and decorating? This was a new set of challenges for them, but they powered through and got the job done beautifully,” added Kathy. The grand finale’ of this project was revealed to the girls and met with a bit of hesitation. According to Kathy, “We told them we wanted an artist rendering on a canvas from each of them as a memento. Their eyes really got bit as they proclaimed ‘We’re not artists!’” Texas Hill Country Realty Co. loves the finished result of their renovated laundry room. “We never had a doubt that this group of girls would do an amazing job. The kids involved in 4-H have definitely got it going on! 4-H builds life skills in its youth. They have tenacity and that “can do” American spirit. Some call it ‘grit,’ and few have it these days!”BBM

Virtual Real Estate Sets Records

D

Decentraland Foundation, a leader in the blockchain-based real estate industry, has sold more than $900,000 in virtual land, a record for the platform. According to Realtor Magazine, blockchain-based real estate has seen a surge in 2021, with U.S. investors purchasing 259 units of land in the Decentraland digital world. Transactions are based on the Ethereum blockchain, a form of cryptocurrency. Users purchase land to show off their non-fungible token (NFT) art collections, attend events, visit buildings, and walk around with friends. Earlier this month a virtual tract in a digital space called The Sandbox sold for $650,000. For more on blockchain, read "Blockchain and Real Estate," a technical report from the Texas Real Estate Research Center.BBM Information courtesy of Real Estate Center Online News and Realtor Magazine.
