BOERNE ISD SUPERINTENDENT DR. THOMAS PRICE TO RETIRE IN JUNE 2024

Boerne Independent School District Superintendent, Dr. Thomas Price, announced that he will retire at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. Dr. Price will retire in June 2024 after seven years of service to the BISD community and 37 years in public education, including 17 years as a Superintendent of Schools.

The Boerne ISD Board of Trustees will begin the search for the next Superintendent this fall. The Board will discuss and share details of the process as it becomes available prior to the start of the search.

Dr. Price will remain Superintendent until the next Superintendent is named and transitions into the district. At that point, Dr. Price will remain an employee of the school district until June 2024 to assist with the transition of leadership.

Dr. Price said, “I love serving the students, staff, and parents of Boerne ISD. It has been the highest honor of my career working with everyone in this wonderful community, but now I am looking forward to focusing on my family. I enjoy supporting our BISD families, but many times I have missed milestones in my own family. Now, I want to be able to enjoy spending time with my wife, Donna, my children, and future grandchildren.”

“I believe seven years is the right amount of time to stay at the helm of an organization like ours. I am very proud of the work we have accomplished over the past several years. I am especially proud of how our students, staff, and parents pulled together during the COVID pandemic to make sure everyone was not only safe, but that together we were able to close the learning gap caused by the pandemic’’, said Superintendent Price.

Dr. Price says that school success has been all about working together as a team.

“I have been blessed to work with wonderful people at Boerne ISD. Our teachers, leadership team, parents, and school board deserve all the credit for working together as a team for the success of our students. BISD continues to be a destination district and is in excellent shape going forward and I am confident BISD will continue to accomplish great things in the future. I believe new leadership and a new perspective will build on our legacy of success, and bring new ideas to the table.”

Speaking on behalf of the BISD Board of Trustees, Board President Carlin Friar praised the superintendent for his ability to build a strong culture of collaboration both within the district and between the district and the community.

“On behalf of the Board, we highly value the progress made in our school system under Superintendent Price’s leadership. Dr. Price has been a tireless visionary for Boerne ISD for the past seven years. Along with the Board, Dr. Price has focused BISD and its stakeholders on identifying and developing the strengths and gifts of every child. This vision culminated in the single focused goal for all of our students to achieve success beyond high school graduation.”

During Dr. Price’s tenure as Boerne ISD Superintendent, the district has grown by nearly 3,000 students to almost 11,000. He oversaw the opening of three new campuses, as well as the passage of the 2022 Bond that will result in Elementary School #8 opening in 2024, along with additions at both high schools, renovations at other campuses, and other facility updates needed for a fast growth district.

About Dr. Price

Dr. Price has been the Superintendent of Schools in Boerne ISD since June 2017 and currently has the longest tenure of any Superintendent in the San Antonio Metro area. Prior to this appointment in BISD, Dr. Price served as Deputy Superintendent/Chief Academic Officer of Humble ISD. His vast experience includes periods as a superintendent, central office administrator, school principal and assistant principal, as well as a classroom teacher.

Dr. Price’s other accolades include:

• Twice named Regional Superintendent of the Year

• State Finalist Superintendent of the Year

• 3-time recipient of HEB Excellence in Education Best School District in Texas.

A Texas native, Dr. Price grew up in Houston. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Houston and completed a Master of Education and his Doctorate at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

BOERNE ISD LOWERS TAX RATE FOR 5TH STRAIGHT YEAR

The Boerne ISD Board of Trustees voted to adopt a budget that will lower the district’s property tax rate for the fifth straight year. The 202324 tax rate is estimated to decrease by eight cents per $100 valuation from $1.1786 to $1.0986. The district’s tax rate has decreased by a total of 25 cents since 2019, and is among one of the lowest school tax rates in the area. The district will pay an estimated $9.4 million dollars in recapture payments to the state, which is an increase of approximately $600,000 from the 2022-23 school year. Additional relief to BISD’s tax rate and estimated recapture payment could be lowered significantly pending results of a possible Texas Legislature Special Session. The TEA will determine Boerne ISD’s tax rate in August 2023.

RRitchie Sorrells, the visionary President and CEO of GVTC Communications, has announced his decision to retire at the end of June 2024. Sorrells has dedicated the last 20 years to serving the needs of our community. Since he was appointed CEO in 2003, Sorrells has evolved the company from a monopolistic telephone-centric cooperative to a highly competitive, full-service communications provider.

Under Sorrells’ dynamic leadership, GVTC experienced unprecedented growth and successfully navigated key transitional phases. His strategic foresight positioned GVTC as the premier FTTH (Fiber-to-thehome) provider for residential and business customers in far North San Antonio, the Texas Hill Country, and South-Central Texas. With his direction, GVTC has now reached over 84% of the 90,000 rooftops in their service area with access to state-of-the-art fiber optic services.

In 2016, Sorrells spearheaded the launch of GVTC’s wholesale services, tapping into the rapidly burgeoning data transport market. Under his guidance, a robust fiber ring was established, connecting San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Lubbock, and smaller markets. Through strategic partnerships with regional telecom companies, GVTC now offers data transport services extending throughout Texas and even crossing international borders into Mexico.

“What attracted me to become a lawyer was the idea of being useful. It is a profession where you can provide assistance, information and really help people,” said Bob Ogle. “My father had a small-town medical practice and I always admired his profession and how he was valuable to his community.” Having now been practicing law for over thirty years here in Boerne, it is safe to say that Mr. Ogle has done just that.

Before becoming a lawyer, Ogle worked as a landman in the oil and gas industry for five years after graduating from college. It was there that he met his wife Patricia who was working in gas contracts at the time. The 1980’s weren’t the best of times for the oil and gas industry and both Bob and Patricia got laid off. While Bob found work elsewhere at a different oil company in Laredo, he knew the future of landmen at the time was not particularly bright. According to Ogle, “What working in the oil and gas industry taught me, however, was that I enjoyed the legal aspects of the business. Deep down I had always wanted to be an attorney and Patricia convinced me to go to law school.”

Soon after, Patricia became the breadwinner working as a legal secretary in San Antonio. Bob enrolled in St. Mary’s University Law School and worked at a law firm during summers. In 1988 he graduated, continuing to work for the same law firm. However, Bob’s desire to have a general practice in a small community led him to Boerne when he was still just barely out of law school. “I heard of this small town just northwest of San Antonio and had to come check it out. As I drove into town and crossed the bridge over the

Cibolo Creek that was it, I was sold. I knew this was the place I wanted to live, work and raise my family,” said Ogle. In April 1989, Bob Ogle opened his legal practice right here on Main Street in Boerne, where the Chamber is now.

Bob and Patricia quickly got involved in the local community. The couple became active in their church, Bob joined the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary. He even served as the president of the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce, was instrumental in establishing the Kendall County Bar Association and a is former Boerne Independent School District Board President. “Boerne is a culture. Patti and I warmed to it immediately and were excited to meet people and be a part of it all,” added Bob. Now, over three decades later, the Ogle Legal Team is still going strong and continues to be a valuable asset to our local community. Bob and his team have recently moved to a new location on the second floor of the Jefferson Bank building, right in the center of Boerne. Patricia has returned to the business after taking some time off to raise their children as well. Her current role involves managing schedules, training Ogle Legal Team members, office work, drafting and reviewing documents and conducting research on legal processes. The Ogles are also joined by legal assistant and long-time Boerne resident, Lisa Dolch. Lisa provides excellent care and diligence to her role as a legal assistant at Ogle Legal Team. She assists in customer service with clientele and opposing counsels, proofreading litigation documentation, working with attorneys and other admin staff on the

litigation processes, as well as forecasting case movement, and performing administrative duties. Together, the team works hard to provide their clients with assistance on legal issues ranging from wills and estate planning, probate, litigation, family law, real estate and mediation. According to Bob, “I have learned so much while practicing law for all of these years. For example, having created and dealt with thousands of wills and probates I have gained a lot of knowledge on this subject. I know things to avoid and can recommend other things to clients that will avoid problems in the future.”

The Ogle Legal Team also practices family law and strives to provide compassionate assistance in those most trying times. “In all our family law cases, my main goal is to try to make it peaceful. That is not possible in every case, sometimes you must fight, and we do so when necessary. However, we work hard to make the situation less contentious,” added Ogle.

In fact, the Ogle Legal Team has launched an online divorce service, Happily Apart, as a simple and cost-effective way to provide a quality service to spouses who feel they can come to an agreement regarding the terms of their divorce. Happily Apart provides the proper tools and information, plus the assurance that wisdom and experience is right next door if needed.

Mr. Ogle’s natural knack for being a peacemaker also serves him well as a mediator.

“I know that mediation works and is an effective process for resolving disputes outside of the courtroom,” he added. As a licensed and experienced mediator, Ogle has many years of experience in many types of legal matters and will bring his wisdom and experience to help you resolve your dispute.

“One of the things I have enjoyed most about this profession is the people. Clients have become friends and we have built a lot of great connections. Hearing people’s stories is honestly one of the best parts of lawyering. It really is true that you can’t judge a book by its cover. People will surprise you every time,” chuckled Bob. “But being able to help them out when they need answers and guidance has been incredibly rewarding.”

The Ogle Legal Team wants their clients and future clients to know they are always available when help is needed. “Many times when it comes to legal matters, whether it be starting a new business, planning your estate or something different, people just need a place to start. We are accessible and available to answer those questions and either provide help or point them in the right direction,” Ogle added. He finished by saying, “Boerne has been good to us. A lot has changed from when we started back in 1989, but it continues to be such a wonderful environment. We love this town so much.”

Texas has 'roared back' from COVID job lossesA jobs

A couple of years ago, it was hard to imagine Texas recovering from substantial COVIDrelated job losses. However, a Texas Real Estate Research Center (TRERC) research economist says data show the state's job numbers have "roared back."

TRERC's Dr. Adam Perdue said Texas employment has more than recovered relative to the 2016-19 trend line for the last few months, even outperforming the U.S. (Figure 1).

He said Austin and DFW have contributed significantly to this outsized performance, while San Antonio and, especially, Houston have lagged.

"This complete return to the former trend line is unusual," Perdue said. "We've surpassed levels we would have forecast even if COVID had never happened."

DAS GREENHAUS ANNOUNCES GRAND OPENING

DDas GreenHaus, Kendall County’s first business incubator, officially opened its doors with the location of its first business tenant, Locoal. Das GreenHaus’ Founding Partners celebrated with an event that featured Locoal’s leadership team and gave a first look at the innovative space.

Das GreenHaus is a 501(c)(3) public-private non-profit located in Boerne, Texas whose mission is to foster the community of innovators to grow Kendall County’s entrepreneurial vision. Das GreenHaus offers the space, services, and programming for entrepreneurs and startup companies to succeed. The 4,800 squarefoot facility has private offices, flexible workspaces, conference/ training rooms, and provides access to a maker space. Located at 7 Upper Balcones in Boerne with convenient access to I-10, Das GreenHaus offers business mentorship, educational workshops, and networking events. The goal of Das GreenHaus is to help startup companies grow, create jobs, and have a positive economic and cultural impact on Kendall County.

The Founding Partners event held at Das GreenHaus recognized the many local businesses and individuals who contributed to the launch of the incubator as well as the City of Boerne. Founding Partners also had the opportunity to meet Das GreenHaus’ first

tenant, Locoal, a sustainable tech company that combines hardware and software to create innovative solutions for the environmental challenges of our time and whose team consists of veterans who have served in various branches of the military and have a passion for technology and sustainability. Locoal’s mission is to make a positive impact on the planet and the people who live on it.

Locoal CEO, Miles Murray stated “The culture of innovation starts at the local community. Das GreenHaus brings together much of the needed support structures that early-stage technology companies need to succeed.”

Das GreenHaus launched through a collaboration between the Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation and the Boerne Kendall County Angel Network.

BBut one day in 2006, Niewolny looked out of his office window from a skyscraper with a view of Lake Michigan and said to himself, “There has to be more to life than this.” Despite his success, he felt empty inside. The thought occurred to him: “If I died today, so what?” He realized he wouldn’t leave a legacy that mattered.

During that period, which he calls the season of “smoldering discontent,” Niewolny reevaluated his life, searching for new passions and ways to give back. He used ideas outlined by Bob Buford in his book Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance. Buford founded the Halftime Institute, a nonprofit organization that helps successful men and women create new lives defined by joy, impact, and balance.

As part of his journey to creating a lasting legacy, Niewolny went on a church mission trip to Africa, where he saw people who had very little but were far happier than he was. When he came back, he and his wife decided to sell their boat, plane, several houses, and other luxuries that he thought would bring him joy and happiness but gave him more headaches than anything else.

The couple used some of the proceeds to start an orphanage in South Africa. “So much joy came out of that,” he says. “That was the first time I realized when I took the focus off myself and put the focus on others, I had incredible joy and balance in my life.”

Niewolny says the purpose and passion for the second half of his life is giving back to those in need and making a difference in other people’s lives. At 54, he’s chief executive officer of the Halftime Institute and author of the new book, Trade Up: How to Move from Just Making Money to Making a Difference.

Finding Purpose

Psychologists say many people hit the pause button at some point during their lives to search for a deeper meaning and purpose. Despite the stereotypes about midlife crises, this pause-and-reset can happen at any age, from a person’s early 20s to retirement, and beyond. And it can be a challenging phase to move through.

The good news is that reevaluation often leads to a better life. In fact, studies show that meaningful activities—things that demonstrate and develop your abilities while also making a positive difference to others—can contribute significantly to your overall sense of happiness.

But what role does money play in happiness? Additional research suggests that money correlates with satisfaction only up to a point. Beyond that threshold, the correlation falls apart, and additional income no longer means additional happiness, says Frank Farley, a psychologist with Temple University in Philadelphia and a former president of the American Psychological Association.

“If you’ve been doing the same gig for decades, and you are highly successful, you may want to ask yourself: ‘How many more money mountains are there to climb? How many successes do I need to chalk up?’ It may be time to look for new venues in your life,” Farley says. That’s where generosity comes in.

The G Factor

When reevaluating their life’s purpose, many folks decide they want to give back. “I have been studying human motivation for decades, and I’m often asked what is on the top of the list of great human motives,” says Farley. “I answer generosity, which I call the ‘G factor.’ Generosity—the giving instinct—is so profound.”

Janet Karzmark, a life coach in San Jose, California, echoes Farley’s point. Giving goes hand in hand with compassion, she says, and most people feel a strong sense of compassion for those in need.

Successful people who have been busy striving and accomplishing things for most of their lives may not have had time to explore the compassionate part of their personalities. But if they volunteer for a humanitarian crisis or get involved in other important causes, their lives feel more complete and more purposeful, she says.

“You don’t want to face your death and think, ‘Oh, I missed

Giving back or serving others doesn’t mean you have to quit your job though. There are plenty of ways to make a difference with only an hour or two a week. For instance, Niewolny says he knew an executive colleague who volunteered to rock newborn babies of drug-addicted parents and found great meaning and joy in that simple act.

Organizations like VolunteerMatch and Charity Navigator make it easier than ever to find volunteer opportunities in your local community.

For many people, using their time and talents in their own sphere of influence is key to finding personal significance. That was the case for Alan Smith, president and chief executive officer of Rockcliff Energy, an oil and gas company in Houston, Texas. For years, Smith says, “I was so busy that I felt like I was drowning.”

To change his trajectory, Smith carved out more time in his life by stepping off several charity and industry boards. He also decided to narrow his focus to helping only a few organizations and a few other people in his network reach their full potential.

Now, Smith is a mentor and serves on the board of directors for the Texas Hearing Institute, a nonprofit pediatric hearing loss organization that provides therapy, education, and support services to children and families affected by hearing loss.

This cause has a special place in his heart because one of his daughters was born deaf. However, after receiving cochlear implants and help from the center, she is now able to hear. “The center had a huge impact on her life,” Smith says. Working on their board is one of the ways he gives back.

For Smith, reevaluating his lifetime legacy meant reprioritizing and staying focused. “You have a finite amount of time on earth, and you’ve been given many gifts and talents,” he says. “It’s a matter of being more intentional and figuring out how you are going to use them.”

How to Restart

There are several ways to begin the journey toward finding your purpose and creating a legacy you are proud of, says Niewolny. First, he says, start with the end in mind.

To do that, Niewolny describes an exercise he calls “the 80th birthday party.” Here’s how it works. Imagine you’re having a big birthday party with all your friends and family in attendance. Using a microphone in the room, the guests will recap your role in their lives. Write down what you hope they’ll say.

Also, write down the answer to these questions:

• What is your pursuit of success costing you?

• What in your life has the greatest value, and what are you doing to protect it?

• If you were to reorder your priorities in life to finish well, what evidence would confirm that you were on the right track?

Another approach is to ask yourself: If you were living a perfect life two years from now, what would that look like? Not what would you be doing, but what would it look like? Describe the scene in vivid detail.

For Niewolny, he wants his wife to flourish and for their marriage to be a priority. He wants his children to have high selfesteem. And he’d like everyone in his family to be in good health.

While it’s common for people to desire change, it’s difficult to shift the course of your legacy all on your own, says Niewolny. Some people benefit from an accountability partner, whether that means a certified life coach, spouse, mentor, friend, neighbor, or colleague. You might also consider multiple coaches.

Tell these people what you want from your life and let them hold you accountable for progress. “There is a reason why the best athletes in the world have coaches even though they may be at the top of their game,” says Niewolny. Coaches provide motivation and support when you need it most.

On a Mission

Figuring out your personal mission in life and acting on it can be life-changing, says Fielding Miller, CAPTRUST co-founder and chief executive officer. He speaks from experience.

During the first half of his life, Miller says he set a hectic pace, trying to raise a family, build a business, stay involved in the community, and maintain an active social life. “My time was overly weighted toward work. I was a complete workaholic,” he says.

Like Niewolny, at age 40, Miller discovered Halftime, which prompted him to reassess his values, aspirations, talents, and relationships. He started thinking about what he wanted for his family—and what he wanted from his own life. One idea from the book especially resonated with him: “What will I do about what I believe?”

The result of that period of introspection was “a total heart change, an epiphany moment,” Miller says. He reevaluated why he was working and reprioritized the things that matter most to him, focusing on his personal endgame—what would matter when his career was over.

It didn’t take long for this new mentality to bear fruit. Gradually, Miller says, he began to look at everything through a new lens. He made decisions and approached relationships differently.

“My personal mission is to live a life that is pleasing to God by being significant in the lives I touch,” Miller says. “I would like to be remembered for fulfilling my mission.”

And it’s never too late, or too early, to decide what that mission will be.
