Water, Water EVERYWHERE

That seems to be the position of the City of Boerne and the City Council.

There is an alternative to a City Water Meter or a well drilled in the County. It is Rainwater Harvesting. We have designed, built and installed over 130 systems that use Rainwater for all domestic water needs. The homes range in size from 1400 sq. ft to 14,000 sq. ft. Each system is designed for the needs of the individual home based on roof area and number of occupants.

Rainwater Harvesting offers Natures Purest Source™ of water, it is the only water that never touches the ground.

A Rainwater Harvesting System can offer you the security of your own water and control over the purity of that water. No reliance on government official’s to treat your water and no government official to tell you what to do with your water and when you can use it.

No more water softener or the slimy feeling when you get out of the shower. So if water quality, security of your water source or just the Purest Source of water interests you, email, sustainablehomesoftexas@gmail.com

Supplements: Know What You’re Getting

DDo you use dietary supplements to help fill in the gaps that your food intake lacks? The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the leading trade association for the dietary supplement and functional food industry, stated that in 2023 nearly three quarters of adults in the U.S. used supplements with 55% of adults taking advantage of them regularly. But how many of the supplements that you take contain and provide the desired ingredients in a form that your body can most readily use and receive the most benefit from? Supplements are not regulated in the same way that prescription medications are, so it can be tricky to know that you are getting what you are paying for. You CAN have confidence in the quality of your supplements.

Many years ago, a sales representative from a nutraceutical supplement company approached me. Their product looked great on the label, but it was a little more expensive than a more common brand. I wanted to see if their products could truly perform better or if I would just be paying for their marketing. I decided to compare their multivitamin (MVI) product to a popular national brand of MVI, so I took them into the lab to experiment. I wanted to know if both products would break down at the same rate to determine how bioavailable, or able to be absorbed, the products would be. I prepared two beakers by adding vinegar to mimic the acid in our stomachs, setting the beakers on a hot plate set to 98oF to mimic normal body temperature, and placing a stir bar in each beaker to mimic the agitation in our stomachs that helps break down our food. Lastly, I added the MVI from each brand to its respective beaker, turned on the hot plate and stir bar, and let the experiment run.

After only 30 minutes, the nutraceutical company’s MVI product was completely dissolved. The other MVI was only half dissolved after about eight hours. This means that after eight hours, the ingredients in the popular national brand’s MVI were not yet available to be absorbed. The ingredients were still in the original form of the tablet, so the benefit that a customer thought they were getting would not likely be fully available to them even after eight hours from starting my experiment. This very rudimentary test is one reason that Annie’s Apothecary very carefully and intentionally selects our supplement brands and products that we carry over the counter. Our goal is to only carry products and supplements that we believe can most fully support our patients' well-being.

One way we work to ensure that we carry the very best supplements is by thoroughly researching the companies we stock. Most, if not all, of our vendors can provide certificates of analysis on their products to prove that what they claim is in

each capsule has been tested and verified to be in each capsule. We also only choose vendors who uphold the highest standards for product sourcing, processing, bioavailability, and reputation.

Providing the best options for high quality supplements is only half of the magic at Annie’s Apothecary. The rest of our secret is highly educated, skilled, and experienced professionals who listen to your goals and offer recommendations that will support you and your body as you work to reach those goals. We have a nutrition advisor and clinical pharmacists with additional training in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, naturopathy, and more who are ready and able to point you in the right direction today.

Many Americans understand that a traditional American diet is not likely to provide all the necessary building blocks for optimal health and wellness. Supplementation is a great tool to help you achieve your wellness goals. At Annie’s Apothecary, we want to help you ensure that you are getting what you pay for with the highest quality, bioavailable supplements on the market. We strive to not only provide high quality products but also education on how to support your road to health. Come visit us today and talk with our team about how to support your health! We look forward to seeing you soon! BBM

PPets bring joy to our lives. The wag of a tail, the soft purr once they snuggle in, or the enthusiastic greeting after a long day at work are all ways that our pets show their unconditional love for us. Sylvia Stadler, owner of Skylar Blue, wanted to create a way for pet parents to show their love in return. “After retiring from my career as an educator and librarian, I started Skylar Blue. Being a pet owner is such a special thing, and I absolutely love my second career of putting gifts together for fellow animal lovers.”

Sylvia has three dogs, Biscuit, Ivy, and the businesses’ namesake, Skylar Blue. “I got Sky as a puppy during Covid and she brought a new vibrance into my life. I recently had to say goodbye to my two sweet senior girls, Chelsea and Lexi,

after almost 17 years of wonderful companionship, love and countless memories. That experience made me even more sensitive to the heartache of losing a furry friend,” said Sylvia. “My pets have been such a wonderful and fulfilling part of my life. I love that I now get to help others to celebrate and memorialize the animals that mean so much to them.”

When Sky was turning a year old, Sylvia wanted to do something to celebrate her birthday and ordered her a gift basket online. According to Stadler, “When the basket came I was very disappointed. Despite being very expensive, the contents were underwhelming and cheap. This basket got me thinking that I could do better!”

Sylvia had been trying to figure out what to do after retirement, so continued on page 22

I received my first basket from Skylar Blue when my cat passed away. I was so touched by the personalized touches in the basket that I could keep forever. It was truly the most thoughtful gesture that has brought so much comfort during a difficult time. I now send sympathy baskets to my dearest friends when they lose a pet because it just lets them know we acknowledge the love they had for that pet. They are always so touched and I love how it blesses them.

It’s true when people say “it’s the little things that make the difference.” I never knew how I could try to make my friends who lost a pet feel seen and loved. When I saw Skylar Blue’s memorial baskets, I just knew this was perfect! Sylvia’s attention to detail and personal touch to these sweet baskets makes all the difference.

The puppy welcome home basket is the most precious basket and I just adore it so much! This was given to me when I brought our Goldendoodle, Bella, home. I absolutely love the soft toy with her name embroidered on it. The healthy treats are well liked by Bella and the toys are great quality and very durable. This is a great gift idea for families bringing a new fur baby into the home!

The spa basket I purchased for Marlowe for her birthday was beyond what I expected. I never imagined that Marlowe would enjoy an at home bath. From the wonderful smelling soap bar to the bath brush, to the monogrammed nubby towel, Marlowe loved it all! Thanks for making bath time so fun. Marlowe enjoyed the cute spa cookie too!

– Myriam

continued from page 21

she decided to give creating pet baskets a try! She began gathering toys and treats to make special birthday baskets for dogs, working on the presentation and getting them just right. “Once I started with the birthday baskets, I immediately began to think about what else I could create,” said Sylvia. Skylar Blue now offers a wide array of specialty baskets for both dogs and cats that include Welcome Home for new additions to the family, Get Well, Just for Wags and Just for Purrs, At Home Spa Day, Seasonal/Holiday, Pet Parent and Sympathy baskets. “When it comes to

breaking, and sometimes we don’t know how to express our sympathy. The pet sympathy gift is a touching way to show someone you care. Having been through this myself, I feel truly grateful that I can provide comfort to other pet parents through the sympathy gifts I offer,” added Sylvia.

The Sympathy baskets come personalized and there are Wooden Heart, Garden or Cozy Blanket options to choose from with available add-ons to truly customize your gift.

“Most of our other baskets include a carefully

our baskets, we know that quality matters, especially when it comes to the ones you love. We don’t put anything in our baskets we wouldn’t give to our own pets, or pet parents.”

The Sympathy baskets have become Skylar Blue’s most popular seller and they offer several options for comforting those who have recently lost a dog, cat or even a horse. “The loss of a pet can be heart-

curated combination of a healthy, but tasty treat, a toy, a bandana and a ball, because Sky loves balls!”

Skylar Blue also offers custom orders as long as they are pet-focused. Sylvia’s baskets also make wonderful client appreciation gifts and realtor closing presents if you know your customers are pet lovers.

Skylar Blue baskets can be shipped anywhere in the United States, but for local customers, Sylvia hand-delivers to over 30 local zip codes! They offer fast delivery because sometimes the perfect gift just can’t wait. “Fast delivery is a priority for us, because we know it is important to you,” said Sylvia.

“Owning a pet is a gift in itself, and no one is more aware of that than us! We love our pets and know you love yours too. That’s the heart behind every gift we create. Gift giving should be joyful, not stressful, and that is what Skylar Blue is all about.”

T The Influence of Employee Engagement on Business Valuation

The intricate connection between employee engagement and business valuation is a subject of increasing interest in the corporate world. As companies strive for better performance and higher valuation, understanding the role of employee engagement becomes pivotal. This article delves into the ways employee engagement can influence organizational performance and, by extension, affect the overall valuation of a business. Drawing from various research studies, we explore the predictive power of engagement on performance metrics, the mediating factors that enhance this relationship, and the strategic importance of fostering employee engagement for competitive advantage and business growth.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

• Employee engagement is a significant predictor of organizational performance, enhancing employee well-being and driving success through increased productivity and commitment.

• Factors such as job autonomy, psychological well-being, and personal attributes like PsyCap and job fit mediate the positive impact of employee engagement on job performance.

• Strategic employee engagement, when aligned with organizational attributes and personal characteristics, serves as a catalyst for competitive advantage and improved business valuation.

UNVEILING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE

The Predictive Power of Employee Engagement on Performance Metrics

The nexus between employee engagement and performance metrics is not just anecdotal; it is a phenomenon well-documented by research. Employee engagement has a significant impact on organizational performance, shaping everything from individual productivity to the broader success of the company. Studies have consistently shown that when employees are engaged, they exhibit higher levels of commitment and productivity, which in turn, positively influences the organization's performance.

While some may argue that subjective reports of job performance rarely align with financial performance, the preponderance of evidence suggests otherwise. Engaged employees are not just happier; they are

pivotal in driving the organization forward. The table below succinctly captures the relationship between employee engagement and performance metrics:

Understanding this relationship is crucial for businesses aiming to leverage employee engagement as a strategic tool for enhancing their valuation.

Mediating Factors: How Job Autonomy and Well-Being Influence Performance

The interplay between job autonomy and psychological well-being is a critical component in the realm of employee engagement. Job autonomy, the degree to which employees feel in control of their work, has been shown to significantly enhance their motivation and, by extension, their performance. This empowerment leads to a more proactive and committed workforce.

Employee well-being, encompassing both mental and physical health, is equally influential. When employees are well, they are more likely to be engaged, and this engagement acts as a bridge, connecting personal satisfaction with professional efficacy. The following points illustrate how these factors mediate performance:

• Autonomy support from managers and autonomy crafting practices both contribute to autonomy satisfaction.

• Psychological well-being fosters a positive work environment, encouraging creativity and innovation.

• The synergy between autonomy and well-being leads to improved job performance and prosocial behavior.

The Role of Employee Engagement in Fostering Organizational Success

The symbiotic relationship between employee engagement and organizational success is undeniable. Engaged employees are the lifeblood of a thriving organization, bringing energy, creativity, and commitment to their roles. This engagement translates into a myriad of benefits that bolster organizational performance.

• Enhanced motivation and productivity

• Greater job satisfaction

• Increased employee well-being

These elements not only contribute to a positive work environment but also drive the financial and strategic outcomes that are critical for business valuation. Engaged employees are more likely to go the extra mile, leading to improved customer satisfaction and loyalty, which in turn can have a profound impact on the bottom line.

Despite the clear advantages, many organizations still face challenges in achieving high levels of engagement. It is essential for leaders to recognize the power of engagement and to implement practices that foster this vital aspect of organizational culture.

STRATEGIC EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT: A CATALYST FOR ENHANCED BUSINESS VALUATION

The Impact of Engaged Employees on Productivity and Competitive Advantage

Engaged employees are not just more likely to be productive; they are also pivotal in securing a competitive edge for their organizations. Research consistently shows that higher levels of employee engagement correlate with increased productivity and success. This is because engaged employees are more committed, emotionally invested in their company's mission, and willing to go the extra mile.

While the advantages are clear, many companies still struggle with low engagement levels. Addressing this issue is essential, as it can lead to a transformative impact on business valuation. The following table illustrates the positive outcomes associated with high employee engagement:

Fostering a culture of engagement requires a strategic approach, integrating factors such as psychological capital (PsyCap), job fit, and intrinsic motivation. By prioritizing these elements, businesses can unlock the full potential of their workforce and experience a significant uplift in their valuation.

Investigating the Parameters: PsyCap, Job Fit, and Motivation

Understanding the intricate dynamics of employee engagement requires a deep dive into the parameters that shape it. Psychological Capital (PsyCap), job fit, and motivation stand out as pivotal elements in this complex equation. These factors are not just buzzwords; they are the gears that drive the machinery of organizational performance.

• PsyCap is a composite of an individual's self-efficacy, optimism, hope, and resilience. It's a resource that employees draw upon to navigate challenges and achieve success.

• Job fit refers to the alignment between an employee's abilities, desires, and the actual demands and rewards of the job.

• Motivation is the fuel that powers an employee's actions, encompassing intrinsic desires and extrinsic rewards.

Personal and Organizational Attributes: Keys to Unlocking Employee Potential

Understanding the intricate tapestry of personal characteristics and organizational attributes is crucial in unlocking the potential of employees and, by extension, enhancing the valuation of a business. Personal traits such as personality, emotional intelligence, and personal happiness interweave with organizational factors like work climate and the presence of a supportive leadership to create a fertile ground for work engagement.

Key elements that foster this environment include:

• Leadership: Skills and capabilities that inspire and engage.

• Purpose: A mission that resonates and aligns with employees' values.

• Growth: Opportunities for career development and feedback.

•Fairness: A safe, equitable workplace with work-life integration. These components are not just isolated factors; they are the gears that drive the engine of organizational success. When these elements are nurtured, they lead to a workforce that is not only engaged but also instrumental in propelling the company towards its strategic goals.

Unlock the full potential of your business with strategic employee engagement. At XCEL Business Brokerage, we understand that the

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the nexus between employee engagement and business valuation is undeniable and profound. The synthesis of research underscores the pivotal role of engagement in bolstering employee performance, well-being, and, by extension, organizational success. Engaged employees are not only more productive but also more committed and emotionally invested in their work, acting as catalysts for enhanced performance amidst competition and challenges. As organizations strive for growth and sustainability, fostering an environment that promotes engagement emerges as a strategic imperative. It is clear that employee engagement transcends mere job satisfaction, serving as a barometer for organizational health and a predictor of long-term value creation. Therefore, businesses that prioritize and cultivate employee engagement are poised to reap the benefits of a more dynamic, resilient, and valuable enterprise.

Sponsored by the Genealogical Society of Kendall County (GSKC), The First Families of Kendall County project began in 1999. The purpose of this project is to recognize the living descendants of persons instrumental in founding and settling of the area encompassed by present day Kendall County, Texas and to preserve the history of their families and the county.

To date, 586 applications have been approved for 318 different individuals. One hundred seventy (170) Founders and one hundred four (104) Early Settlers have been documented and recognized. They represent one hundred thirty-five (135) different families in Kendall County. There are two hundred sixty-two (262) volumes of First Families notebooks on the shelves at the Family History Place.

Here we will share with you some of the stories of those First Families who settled this beautiful area of the Texas hill country. We hope you enjoy!

First Families of Kendall County

Conrad Adam 1828 – 1894

Adalbertha Bergman 1836 – 1914

IIn 1854, Conrad Adam and his brother Carl left Tiefenbach in Hesse, Prussia, to go to Texas. They sailed on the ship Franziska and arrived in Galveston in November. Their uncle, Wilhelm Friedrich, encouraged them to come to the new town of Boerne. Friedrich sailed on the St. Pauli with twenty-one other educated men in 1847 to establish an intellectual community in Bettina. After several attempts, Friedrich and a handful of these men came to the Boerne area and later helped establish the town, which John James platted in 1852. Friedrich surveyed many early land patents in Kendall County recorded in the Texas General Land Office.

Conrad and Carl had no reason to stay in Tiefenbach. Their mother, Wilhelmina Klotz Adam, died of consumption in November 1833 when Conrad was four and Carl was seven months old. His father, Wilhelm Adam, married Anna Elizabeth Mueller five months later. Several children were born to Wilhelm and Anna Elizabeth. According to Conrad’s daughter, Bertha Froebel Haby, Conrad had difficulty with his stepmother who sent him to work for other relatives. In 1848, Conrad’s father died of smallpox. Neither he nor his brother Carl had any land or immediate family left in Tiefenbach, so they decided to take their uncle’s advice and emigrate to Texas. Uncle Wilhelm Friedrich was a good friend of Dr. Ferdinand Herff and probably helped Conrad find employment there. He worked for Dr. Herff and cared for his horses and other property. He also leased land from Dr. Herff, where he raised his own horses and cattle.

Kathryn Adam Hurst, author of this article, is a direct descendant of Conrad. She still owns and lives on some of the original Adam farm. The Conrad Adam house on Scenic Loop is being used as a business today, but the widow's walk, and two-story porch are no longer there. Conrad's son, Julius, is in the picture of the house. In the picture you can see the widow's walk the stage drivers would use to scout the road beyond the house.

In 1856, Conrad married Adalbertha Bergmann, daughter of Joseph and Theresia Ohnesorge Bergmann. The Bergmann family arrived in 1853 and purchased land along Menger Creek. They were from Reichenberg, Boehem, now part of the Czech Republic. The couple had seven children, six of whom grew to adulthood. Kathinka married Paul J. F. Toepperwein, Theresa married Frederick Voges, Emilie married Wilhelm Schoenert, Julius married Ida Haufler, Bertha married H.G. Froebel and later Charles Haby, and Emma married Christian Herms. The youngest child, Amalie, died in 1869.

Conrad embraced his new community. In 1855 he signed the petition to create Blanco County with his brother and father-in-law. Later, he signed the 1859 and 1861 petitions to form Kendall County. During the Civil War, Conrad was a member of the Third Frontier District of the Texas State Troops, serving under Captain W. E. Jones. He was 37 years old and owned a pistol. On the 1867 Voters Registration, he said he was a “good Union man.” He purchased cemetery plots in the newly formed Boerne Cemetery, was a member of the fraternal insurance organization of the Knights of Honor and supported the Boerne Gesangverein. He farmed and sold freshly butchered meat

from a wagon with his brother Carl and later with Friedrich Voges, his son-in-law.

In 1874, he purchased land along the road to San Antonio, Boerne Stage Road, now called Scenic Loop. He built a two-story rock house where he farmed for the next twenty years. The home was a frequent stage stop, and the drivers would use the Widow’s Walk on top of the house to scout the area before continuing their journey. Conrad appears in the Commissioner’s Court minutes as the road maintenance foreman for that section of the road. In 1894, he was severely injured in a wagon accident while fording the Guadalupe River. He died several weeks later due to those injuries, almost forty years to the day of his arrival in Texas. His funeral was held in the home of his brotherin-law, Wilhelm Dietert. He is buried in the Boerne Cemetery beside his wife Adalbertha, who died in 1914.

OOne of the most common questions adult children have when a parent needs senior care is what to do with their parent’s house. Selling or keeping the house are the two main options, but there isn’t a onesize-fits-all answer. To make the best decision, you’ll first need to assess your parent’s financial situation and whether they can afford senior living. If they don’t need to sell their house, you and your siblings should understand the responsibilities of eventually inheriting a house. On top of all that, there are emotional factors to consider, so it’s important to plan and prepare for many different scenarios.

DETERMINE IF KEEPING OR SELLING THE HOUSE IS YOUR DECISION TO MAKE

Remember that seniors retain all legal authority when it comes to deciding what to do with their property. If you’re the adult child of a parent who plans to move into a senior living community, the decision to sell or keep their house could be yours in a couple scenarios: with a power of attorney that grants you the legal right to decide what to do with your parent’s real estate, or if your parent dies and leaves the house to you as an inheritance.

However, many seniors rely on their adult children to help them navigate complicated financial decisions, such as the sale of a home and a move into senior care. You can provide valuable insight even if the ultimate decision is your parent’s.

Here are some questions to ask your aging parent when they’re deciding whether to keep their house:

• Can they afford the expenses of owning a house (mortgage, upkeep, taxes) while also paying for senior care?

• Do they intend to leave the house to a family member as an inheritance?

• Do they have any plans for renting out the house or using it as a vacation home?

• Are they emotionally prepared to sell the house?

REVIEW YOUR PARENT'S FINANCES TO SEE IF THEY CAN AFFORD SENIOR CARE WITHOUT SELLING THEIR HOME

What To Do With Mom or Dad’s House When They Can’t Live On Their Own Anymore

have the financial resources to fully fund their senior living expenses. Selling the home may be the best option to pay senior living. You’ll want to contact a REALTOR to help determine the market value of the home and the time it will take for the home to sell.

In general, if all the following statements are true for your aging parent, keeping their house when moving into a senior living facility may be a reasonable option:

• Your parent is able to pay for the senior care they need with funds outside of the equity in their house (retirement accounts, insurance accounts or veterans benefits).

• Your parent can fully cover the cost of senior care without financial help from you and your siblings.

• Your parent owns their house outright, meaning they won’t have the added financial burden of a mortgage payment.

CONSIDER THE FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF INHERITING THE HOUSE

An aging parent’s move to senior care may prompt questions about inheritance. This is a good time to review your and your siblings’ financial situations to determine whether you could — or should — keep an inherited house when the time comes.

Often, the biggest factor when deciding whether to keep a house is the aging parent’s ability to pay for senior care. The average cost of assisted living is $4,807 a month, according to A Place for Mom’s 2023 report on the cost of long-term care and senior living. Due to inflation and the increased cost of senior care, many seniors don’t

Keeping an inherited house is often a more complicated financial decision than selling a house to pay for senior care. If the following statements are true for you or your siblings, then keeping an inherited house after the death of a parent may be a good option:

• You’re aware of any inheritance or estate taxes, and you’re able to pay them. Some states don’t have an estate tax, which can make the transfer of property to children considerably less expensive. Be sure to check if the state the house is in levies estate taxes.

• You’re aware of the cost of upkeep, and you can afford it. Many inherited properties are older and have more long-term update costs. If it’s a large house, can you afford the general upkeep of the property? According to the insurance firm Hippo, the average annual cost of general home upkeep, including maintenance and repairs, was $6,000 in 2023. You could pay more if you plan on living in the house and remodeling it in a more contemporary style.

• You’re aware of the insurance costs, and you can afford them. In

many areas the cost of insuring homes has risen considerably in the last few decades. In general, insuring homes in areas prone to natural disasters such as flooding, hurricanes, tornados, or fires is more expensive than insuring homes elsewhere.

• The property could become a real estate investment. Depending on where you live, selling could mean losing more money than you would gain by keeping the home for a while longer. If you know the real estate market where your parent lived is on an upward trajectory, keeping the house may be a smart financial decision.

• You have plans for the property. If the house is suitable as a rental property and would cost less in upkeep than you could make in rent, keeping it may be an excellent option. Before choosing this route, just be sure you’re aware of all upfront costs, long-term costs, and the necessary time investment related to managing a rental property.

NAVIGATE EMOTIONAL QUESTIONS WHEN DECIDING TO KEEP A FAMILY HOME

Your emotions and relationships shouldn’t be ignored when deciding whether to keep a parent’s home. For many adult children, selling a family home — often the home they grew up in — can feel like a true loss. Homes are, after all, more than a financial investment. They’re deeply tied to identity and memories, which have a value all their own.

If the following statements are true for your parent, your siblings, or yourself, consider keeping your parent’s home:

• You hope to live in the house or use it as a vacation home.

• You live near the house or have plans to visit regularly.

• You intend for the house to stay in the family generationally.

• You aren’t emotionally ready to sell the home and can afford to keep it, at least for a while longer.

UNDERSTAND

EMOTIONS WHEN DECIDING TO KEEP OR SELL A HOUSE

For many seniors moving into senior care, the thought of selling their house can feel like the last tie to their independence. It can be a highly distressing idea, and their emotions shouldn’t be dismissed. Instead, consider whether the house needs to be sold, and if the answer is yes, decide when it needs to be sold. Selling the home a while after your parents are settled into their new living situation may allow your parents to process the decision more fully.

REMEMBER THAT DECIDING TO KEEP OR SELL A FAMILY HOME IS A SERIOUS DECISION

Whether you and your parent decide to keep a family home after moving into senior care is one of the most important financial decisions you can make, and it’s not one to take lightly. Taking your parent’s financial situation into account is the most important aspect of this decision, but don’t forget to account for your and any siblings’ finances as well. Finally, remember that choosing to keep or sell a home is an emotional choice for everyone involved, and it should be treated with sensitivity. BBM
