I

publisher's note It appears that the sun may finally be shining and summer can begin!! Who’s ready for backyard BBQ’s, lazy floats down the Guadalupe River, trips to the Texas coast and all the other fun things that summer brings? Summer is my favorite time of the year so I am going to try to soak it all in! This is the time of year that many kiddos head off to summer camps. Whether they are day camps or overnight camps, there are tons of options in this area to keep the kids entertained all summer long. This month we feature Still Water Camps. For 20 years this organization has been showing kids the love of Christ through the avenue of sports camps. Over the years, Still Water has grown and expanded its reach to include a variety of different camp experiences as well as community outreaches.Turn to page 16 to learn more! There is a lot going on this month in and around Boerne. Many of our favorite local events have returned! We have Abenkonzerte, the Berges Fest Parade, the KCFA Bull Riding Blowout and Dance, Movie Nights in the Park, Boerne Concert Band Performances and even a Kendall County

Liars Contest at the Boerne Library. Be sure to check out the Calendar of Events for all the details! Want to spend some time in the great outdoors? Well there are plenty of great spots to take in all the beauty of the hill country without even leaving Kendall County. Read about some of our favorite spots on page 8. I hope you enjoy this June issue of BBM!

Summer often brings to mind fun childhood memories – long, hot days and warm lazy nights filled with backyard barbecues, family road trips, campouts with friends and of course, summer camp! While most camps are filled with horseback riding and arts and crafts, Still Water Camps has been doing things a bit differently for 20 years now! Founded in 2001 by Matt Moehrig, aka Coach Mo, the original vision of Still Water Camps was to show kids from all walks of life the love of Christ through the avenue of a sports camp. Throughout the years, that vision has evolved to also include adventure camps, family camps and ministries for children and teens within the local community. “Our desire is to serve each camper and love them as Christ does. Sport and adventure are great things and we want to enjoy them together, but above all, we want to challenge each student not only as an athlete, but as a person,” said Matt. Moehrig, who spent time teaching in the public school system, was given the vision for Still Water along the still waters of the bay near Corpus Christi, Texas. During his teaching and coaching years, he was confronted with the reality of how hard life can be in middle school. The idea that the Lord leads us beside still waters (Psalm 23:3) to a place of peace and away from the chaos of everyday life is the desire for the camp experience. In October of 2001, Still Water was formed as a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit and in July of 2002 the first camp, a boys football camp in Medina, Texas, was held! Once Still Water was formed, it didn’t take long for Moehrig to move his business to Boerne. According to Matt, “I felt God’s call for the camp to be more centrally located. While playing high school baseball I would often travel to Boerne and had always been drawn to this town.” Life in Boerne was a bit rough for Coach Mo in the early years however. “I lived in my truck for about a year. Then Dr. Larry Karrh, and his wife Patricia, offered me their barn to live in. I officed out of what was then The Daily Grind coffee shop on Main Street while I worked to build the vision that God had instilled in me.”

Soon after moving to Boerne, Matt’s wife Becca became a volunteer for Still Water. The two fell in love and were married. Now the couple has six adorable kiddos – Mikayla, Brea, Aubrey, Lauralyn, Dane and Cambrie. Through the years Still Water has expanded and grown as Matt, Becca and their team of employees and volunteers continue to find new ways to minister to both kids and their families. The summer staff for the camps is made up of high school and college athletes and students who love kids! “They can be a wild and crazy bunch who love to put on costumes and dance, but also have their eyes open to make sure everyone is included. They are our greatest asset, and above all they love God and want to allow our campers to experience His love,” said Matt. “What started out as a boys football camp has grown to Overnight Camps, Family Camps, Champ Camps, and local discipleship opportunities,” said Becca. The Overnight Camps are designed for youth ages 8-18 interested in sports, leadership and adventure! According to Matt, “The aim of these camps is to present the Gospel in a clear way by exemplifying excellence in all we do in hopes that the kids will truly understand their potential and take ownership of their faith.” The Overnight Camps take place in Harper, Texas at Still Water’s 145-acre retreat facility, Knott Creek Falls. There is also an overnight Family Camp at Snow Wolf Lodge in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. Becca added, “One of the things that we love about Still Water is that families have found that they can get involved and serve together.” The Champ Camps are Christ-centered youth sports day camps. These camps are geared towards elementary aged kids and include Chalk Talk (lesson, music, skit), SWISS (Still Water Intense Sports Session), SWAT (Still Water Activity Time), Snacks, Games and Competitions. For the 2021 Summer Session, there are two Champ Camp sessions in Boerne and one in Calallen. “Champ Camps are a great introduction for kids and their families to the Still Water experience,” said Matt. “These familiarize the families with Still Water and build those foundational relationships and trust, so that when the kids are ready for the Overnight Camps, the parents can feel good about entrusting their children to us.” Still Water has also developed Church Connect Camps where they partner with local churches to put on a week long day camp for the children of their congregation. There are currently three of those in the San Antonio area.

In addition to the camps, Still Water has year-round programs for youth of all ages. NUEYO (Never Under Estimate Your Opponent) is a collection of small group discipleships within the Boerne community for elementary and middle school children that are led by high school students. In addition, there is CampUs, Chalk Talks and War Room, all of which reach a different age group of kids in various settings. For example, War Room is an ongoing discipleship for college students. Chalk Talks are more of a youth group environment for high school students. “The growth of Still Water has been fostered by this incredible community that we live in,” said Matt. “The Boerne community, both the individuals as well as the local churches and businesses, are so generous in giving of their time and finances. Just this summer we have over 100 teenagers from the Boerne area who have volunteered to serve at Champ Camp. It doesn’t stop there either! We have moms and dads, entire families that come along side us to help make these camps happen so we can share the love of God in a fun environment with these campers.” Still Water never wants finances to be a hindrance to any

child’s desire to attend camp. As a response to that, nearly 50 percent of their campers are sponsored. Matt added, “A unique aspect of Still Water is the bringing together of kids from every walk of life in a setting where they can all have the experience together.” Scholarships are made possible through the generous donations of individuals and businesses, as well as Still Water’s two annual fund raisers, a Fall Golf Tournament and the Spring Dinner. The Moehrigs credit much of the success of Still Water to their partnerships that have been created with like-minded organizations. These partner organizations not only allow them to grow their campers and staffers throughout the year, but they help to identify kids in their sphere of influence that may need help with scholarship assistance to get to camp. “It has been amazing to see the Still Water vision grow and come to life. It has largely been community driven and one of the most rewarding things has been finding out the gifts and passions of our team of volunteers and then empowering them to use those gifts within the ministry.” BBM

Retirement and Succession Planning:

C

Is a Family Limited Partnership Right for You? by Ashley Brand, CPA, Senior Tax Manager – ADKF

Currently, according to Pew Research Center, about 40% of baby boomers have retired with the annual retirement rate up this past year due to Covid-19. Succession planning has been, and will remain, a major concern for this retiring population for many years to come. Tax-wise, the sooner you start planning to transition your assets or closely held business, the better. However, many people delay transitioning because they don’t want to give up control of their assets and they’re concerned their beneficiary children aren’t ready to take over fully. In these situations, a family limited partnership (FLP) can be beneficial because it provides a means by which control over your assets can be retained as well as tax-advantageously transferred over time. How It Works An FLP is created by transferring your assets or ownership interest of a closely held business to the newly formed FLP in exchange for general partner (GP) and limited partner (LP) interests. The LP interest can then be gifted to your children or other desired beneficiaries. The GP interest would be retained by you, which can be as little as 1% of the FLP. As general partner of the FLP, you still have control over the assets in that you can make the business decisions and run the day-to-day operations. Over time, you can gradually transition control and responsibility to your beneficiaries as they learn the business. Tax Advantages The LP interest that you gift removes value from your estate. The annual gift exclusion is $15,000 per person for 2021, which means you and your spouse can gradually gift annually up to $30,000 of LP value to each beneficiary without using any of your lifetime exemption. Additionally, future earnings and appreciation of the assets in the FLP would now be moved to the next generation. Currently the lifetime gift tax exemption is $11.7MM, but under current law is set to move down to $5MM in 2026. Additionally, President Biden has stated he would like to move the lifetime exemption amount down to $3.5MM. If your estate is worth more than $3.5MM, or $7MM if married, now is the time to begin making these transfers. As holders of LP interest in the FLP, your beneficiaries would have no control over the FLP. They also cannot sell the FLPs assets or their interest in the FLP without your consent. This lack of control, and therefore lack of outside market for interest in the FLP generally means the interest in the FLP can be valued at a discount. For example, if you transfer $10MM worth of real estate into a FLP, and then gift 90% of the FLP to your children with a valuation discount of 35%, you will only use up $5.85MM (($10MM * .9) * (1 - .35)) of your lifetime exemption. Another potential tax advantage is that the gifted portion FLP income will now be allocated to your beneficiaries who may be in a lower tax bracket than yourself. This would result in lower income tax paid overall by the family. Disadvantages In the past, the IRS has scrutinized the use FLP discounts and has even gone as far as issuing proposed regulations related to these discounts. Those proposed

regulations were tabled under the Trump administration but have the potential to resurface under the Biden administration. It is also important that the FLP is administered like a true business. If it appears it has no business purpose and was formed for the sole purpose of avoiding taxes, then additional taxes, penalties and interest could be assessed. The cost associated with setting up a FLP should also be considered. Valuations of the FLP will need to be made each time interest is transferred, which can be expensive. There is also the cost of annual filing requirements to consider. Finally, not all assets can be transferred to a FLP. An FLP cannot be the owner of S Corp stock, IRAs, and other qualified retirement plans. How ADKF Can Help ADKF has been helping our clients for 30 years with their tax and estate planning needs. Amazing Results, Little to No Downtime

L

Local boutique skincare spa, The Cottage Door, is committed to staying on top of cuttingedge skincare treatments. Owner and esthetician, Claudia Heyne, is proud to announce the addition of Procell MicroChanneling to the list of services available at The Cottage Door. According to Heyne, “Microchanneling is a noninvasive procedure designed to stimulate your body’s own natural ability to generate collagen, elastin, and other building blocks of healthy skin.” By stimulating the outermost layers of the skin, microchanneling can help your body start this process without penetrating into living tissue. This therapy is used to provide dramatic improvement to many common skin concerns such as acne scars, pigmentation, stretch marks, fine lines and wrinkles, acne breakouts, poor tone and texture and even thinning hair! “Microchanneling is less aggressive than lasers, with the added benefit of virtually nonexistent downtimes! Numbing cream will be provided for the area to be treated, however the treatment is not generally considered to be painful,” added Heyne. So what is the difference between Procell MicroChanneling and Microneedling?

Procell also combines the use of highly antiinflammatory Stem Cell Growth Factor serums to help heal the signs of aging, crepe skin, acne scars, pore size and other skin issues.
