hey y'all

B

Boerne is booming. Our town is growing by leaps and bounds these days and that means lots of new people and lots of new businesses. Each month as I look at the Ribbon Cuttings from the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce I am amazed at all of the growth. And while new can be exciting, take it from this lifelong Boerne-ite, some of the best local businesses are the ones that have stood the test of time! The businesses that this great community was built on should not be overlooked. There’s a reason that locals have been eating Mague’s tacos and Bumdoodler’s sandwiches and soups (to name a couple of my favorites) for a couple of generations now – cause they are darn good! The same can be said for this month’s cover feature, Rudkin Productions. This year marks 30 years that they have been providing quality advertising solutions to businesses both locally and internationally. Read all about Kathy Rudkin and her team and the services they provide starting on page 16. Are you an owner of one of these longtime Boerne businesses? Maybe you are getting to the point where you want to think about retirement but aren’t sure how to transition your business to that

Meet Lisa! She celebrates her 7-year Anniesversary in June. As a pharmacist, Lisa visits local prescribers educating them on how compounded medications can help solve their patients’ problems. Whether it’s a solution for hair loss, a numbing cream for laser treatments, a transdermal cream for pain, or a libido-enhancing troche, she has the answers to their patients’ woes. You may see Lisa in the pharmacy some days of the week also. Lisa is an avid tennis player and loves listening to her husband play guitar in a local band.

Financial Planning: Business Life Cycle

A

by Richard Barkley, Financial Advisor, Certified Valuation Analyst – Prime Capital Investment Advisors

A business plan should have multiple stages in the business’ life cycle that are directly correlated to the owner's personal financial plan. In most cases, the goal is to successfully start, build and either monetize or sell the investment / business at the maximum value and the right time. But does this maximum value solve the owner's retirement needs financially and give the owner their desired lifestyle? This is where a detailed financial plan should incorporate a business plan and outline the business life cycle. It is important to have an orderly, sequential action plan to incorporate all of the intangible and tangible value drivers and take your company from a year-to-year business to a significant business that is at the top of its game and very attractive and ready to sell. This business plan should then align the sale proceeds with your personal financial plan and the owner's goals and vision. A few old adages come to mind: "You can't manage what you don't measure." Know the value of your business and get a professional Business Valuation. Then "Begin with the end in mind." Work with a Financial Planner to know what you want / need later in life to accomplish your goals with a comprehensive financial plan. First assess the potential risks and steps needed to mitigate these risks. These end goals speak directly to the team’s action items: duties, responsibilities, systems and processes to accomplish the objectives. In the beginning, the owner should identify and assess the risks by measuring and analyzing all of these value drivers and prioritize the action items and time frames. One of the next steps is to protect the business by reducing

8

B oerne B usiness M onthly | June 2022

the identified risks. To do this, one should assess the following company's benchmarks, range of value, profit gap, value gap, Key performance indicators, Industry Peer comparisons, tangible and intangible value drivers, and etc. All of these measurements will also add clarity, confidence and direction that the business and team should take. We always prepare a full Business Insights Report for all our clients – a comprehensive review and evaluation – which includes a valuation number and more importantly the value potential – what the business should / could be worth. This business value gap can be utilized in daily operations to make significant improvements to people, revenue, efficiencies, cost reductions and even company culture. By understanding these risks, we can prioritize action items to mitigate the risk and improve business value. Again, these risks will also be associated and tied to the business owners' personal risks and goals. Hence, Financial Planning tied to Business Planning and the stages of the life cycle and the importance of improving the business value. The next stage will be to grow and improve the value of the business. You can accomplish this by either increasing cash flow (EBITDA) or increasing the sales / EBITDA multiple. There is a strategic approach to improve financials and value drivers. Improving the value drivers will reduce risks which will improve multiple. We can always run comparable sales to attain average industry multiples but why be average? We will define and defend the steps in place that reduces these risks. Strengthening the intangible value drivers like employ-

ee culture, communities' perception of the business, improving the systems and processes and lastly, how your customer's see the business. At some point, the potential to monetize the business / investment should be considered. In this decision one will be executing and/or assessing the exit options, deal terms and deal structure. This has many angles to consider. A few examples would be an asset sale v. stock sale, part cash part equity, debt financing, earnout, third party sale, employment contracts, etc. Discuss who will be best buyer – strategic investor, financial investor, Private Equity partner, internal sale to management or employees, etc. Which exit fits the owner's goals and vision and what does success look like for the owners. The final phase involves managing value / invest net proceeds and figuring out how to then manage money / invest money. An early, holistic financial plan is critical to manage the value and accomplish the goals. Even if a business owner is selling now, improving, solidifying and understanding the value is critical. Consider when you sell: how do you replace that income? How do you have the lifestyle you want? How do you replace your time? How do you replace your identity? These are the personal questions we address with our clients. After the current and projected valuation is established, we will continue to grow and protect your business / investment. A successful exit (success) plan should be directly correlated to a successful business plan that should be directly correlated to the Financial Plan. BBM

Rudkin Productions Marks 30 Years as Advertising Leader

A

Boerne-based marketing and web agency continues print legacy while forging digital future and expansion of a satellite San Antonio location by Kevin Thompson & Kathy Rudkin

Advertising executive Kathy Rudkin announced recently that 2022 is a year-long celebration of her company’s founding. Rudkin Productions turned the lights on thirty years ago this past February. “We are celebrating three decades of advertising success and the many valuable clients we have served,” Rudkin stated. “Since 1992, Rudkin Productions has promoted highly respected brands in both nonprofit and for-profit circles.” Rudkin Productions launched in Oklahoma City before relocating to

the San Antonio area in 1995. Rudkin is an advertising graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma and began her journey to entrepreneurship in the early 1990s in Oklahoma City. She started as a receptionist in a local advertising firm and worked her way up to broadcast production manager after a relatively short period of time. Being young, eager and ambitious, she was motivated to go out on her own at the age of 24 and start her own agency, Rudkin Productions. What started in her spare bedroom has now turned into one of the

largest Texas Hill Country advertising agencies with a prime location on I-10 in Boerne. “I moved out of my spare bedroom and into an actual office around 1997. During that time, we kept outgrowing location after location until I was finally able to purchase an empty lot on I-10. Our permanent home for well over a decade now is the iconic twostory building with the big light bulb on the side that you see heading into Boerne. This 4,800 square foot building was custom built for our needs with a full-service graphic and web department, photography studio, digital department and a print shop.” Upon moving from Oklahoma, Rudkin initially served clients in both the Sooner and Lone Star States. “I travelled back and forth to Oklahoma until 2001 until I could build up a strong clientele in Texas.” Today, her agency’s reach extends nationally – and even internationally with clients in Canada, United Kingdom and Israel. “Our team led one international organizaKathy Rudkin, Owner tion, Christians United for Israel (CUFI), from initial logo designed sixteen years ago to over ten million members today,” Rudkin recalls. “Since 2006, Rudkin has worked with the national office to help organize each year a 5,000-member convention in Washington, DC. The growth has been fun to watch – and rewarding to be a part of.” “Rudkin Productions has played an integral part in how we have communicated with our members for over 16 years,” said Jordan Hunter, CUFI Project Manager, “they provide us with solutions and insight on the best ways to carry out our message and mission whether it’s through direct mail, books, collateral and event materials, or website development and ongoing maintenance. Kathy and her team are on the cutting edge of marketing communications, and they do everything with integrity and excellence.” Rudkin understands the power of digital marketing and her clients have been experiencing great outcomes. “Digital marketing has become an exceedingly larger part of the company’s overall marketing strategies. I think many companies realized the importance of a strong digital presence during Covid-19 when they were scrambling to get information out, as well as just reinvent their business model during this time. It was an eye-opening experience for most businesses because it exposed just how vulnerable their current practices truly were. Due to this, our digital department has continued to explode.” This explosion has led her to launch an entire Digital Department called Digital Domino Marketing. Through lead generating software, Rudkin offers clients one place to book, track and communicate with leads generated automatically through social media or google inquiries by following up with email and texting thus converting the lead into an actual client. Although web development has been a large part of her services for years, the new digital department has expanded their expertise in search engine optimization, geo-fencing, location and point of interest marketing, targeted social media with emphasizes on Call to Action driving more leads, along with Google My Business, Google Ads, non-profit advertising grants and Google Analytics management. At the same time, Rudkin Productions maintains a focus on traditional advertising. A team of tenured, in-house graphic designers produce billboards, logos, brochures, magazines, books and direct mail daily. Other services are specialty items, trade booths, large mediums, radio and TV commercials, media placement and company videos. “Traditional advertising is not going continued on page 18

Our goal is to make it easy for small business owners to generate, follow up with, and convert leads into paying customers who leave 5-star reviews. We do this through our proven process that makes you, the business owner, the absolute authority in your community. We understand that social media is a beast to feed and most business owners do not have the time or energy to dedicate to it, thus where we come in. We handle all areas of social and digital media - from organic posting, to lead generating software integrated within your social media platforms (schedule tours, book appointments, even take pre-payments right from your social media ad), tracking, social pixels within your website to allow retargeting through social media, Google My Business with chat and updating management, Google Analytics and Google ads, geofencing (serving ads through apps and websites within in a geotargeted location), location listening (fencing locations and pulling mobile IP addresses to re-target through social media), eblasts and many other services. We would love to set up an appointment with you and get a better understanding of your needs. Our reps at Digital Domino Marketing understand that every business is unique. We work with small business owners and their staff personally to customize a system that works for them and their business.

continued from page 17 anywhere; we are just as busy today as we were pre-Covid, we just now incorporate the digital component into our advertising plans,” explains Rudkin. Direct mail is still such a huge part of their services. Twelve years ago, Rudkin started a sister company, Rudkin Printing, that prints large run envelopes in the millions each year. With the recent closings of two Boerne-area printing companies, Rudkin has purchased additional equipment and expanded her in-house printing operation and has the only sizeable printing company along the Interstate 10 West corridor. Even small runs are competitively priced. Rudkin is set to open a second satellite San Antonio location for a portion of her print shop in June 2022 at 8126 Broadway to house the ever-growing envelope portion of their business. “People are always so shocked when I say, we print millions in envelopes,” Rudkin said amused, “it sounds so random, but if you think about it, envelopes are a part of our lives every single day. The next time you go to the mailbox and you are holding stacks of envelopes from various companies, someone had to convert and print that envelope. In fact, you might even be holding one of ours.” In addition to her advertising work, Ms. Rudkin also works closely with Aid the Silent, an organization her daughter, former Miss San Antonio, Emma Faye Rudkin, founded to advocate for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. This relationship helped expand her agency into the production of throwing large events including 5ks, galas and large music festivals with all being fully deaf accessible. It’s very unique to have creative design, full-scale printing and non-profit management all under one roof,” Rudkin observed. “The collaboration and efficiencies benefit our clients.” A faith-based agency, Rudkin Productions’ clients include Christian ministries, churches, lobbying groups and other non-profits. The company also serves banks, medical practices, retailers, tourism groups and construction firms. The company has garnered many awards over its thirty year history including Best of Show “Addys” from the San Antonio Advertising Federation and Summit Awards from the Greater San Antonio Builders Association. “The awards are a reminder of the hard work,” Rudkin reflected. “You never know what will come from taking care of someone. Adding a swirl to a logo of a walk-in once turned into 14 separate advertising accounts. People want good customer service… they want people who genuinely care about their business and their success.”

“Rudkin Productions makes the marketing process seamless for us,” said Maggie Bennette, owner of Creative Industries, an international manufacturer of solar lighting for large scale markets in the US and Canada. “They offer solutions, not just suggestions. Their knowledge in the digital arena has helped produce results and given us a valuable presence in our industry globally.” As Rudkin Productions continues to grow and expand, so do Rudkin’s dreams and she welcomes change, “One of my favorite quotes is from Mark Batterson in The Circle Maker, ‘bold prayers honor God, God honors bold prayers.’ I have realized as I have become older, most of the time we just have to say YES. We don’t necessarily have to have it all figured out; we just need to be willing to go on the adventure. Being fully engaged in this life and trying to make a difference, even a small one, is what makes this all worthwhile.” BBM

Which Retirement Plan is Best for You?

S

Solo 401(k) Plans vs SEP Plans by Christian Santos – ADKF

Self-employed individuals often have an array of issues to worry about when running a business by themselves. There is often a solo focus on only worrying about profitability. Of course, this is important because one is unable to run a successful business without profitability. However, these individuals should not and cannot forget about their future both for themselves and, potentially, future employees. As such, every employer should be looking at adopting a retirement plan as a way to look out for their financial well-being in the future. Now, you may be thinking that it does not make sense to adopt a benefit plan as you’re a single employer company or even a company with a small number of employees. I’m here to tell you that line of thinking is incorrect and there are significant benefits for a self-employed individual to adopt one. Now, with a different array of choice to select from, what is the best plan to choose. For briefness, we will focus on two of the most popular choices for self-employed persons, Solo 401(k) Plans and SEP Plans. One retirement plan that may be attractive to adopt is the Solo 401(k) plan. The Solo 401(k) plan states that the only participant that can enter into the plan is the business owner along with their spouse IF they work for the company. However, no other employees are allowed to enter. This plan is similar to regular 401(k)s and must abide by IRS regulations. In 2022, the self-employed employee can contribute elective contribution up to $20,500, or $27,000 if they are eligible for catch up contributions. Unlike some traditional plans that have limitations on the percentage of salary that can be elected to be deducted, the self-employed employee – owner can contribute 100% of their salary into the plan. Self-employed - owners also have the added benefit of an employer contribution (not to be mistaken for the elective deferral) and the owner acting as the com-

20

B oerne B usiness M onthly | June 2022

pany can contribute up to 25% of the employee-owner’s compensation as long as the self-employed employee-owner has not surpassed the total contributions limit of $61,000 for 2022 with both the elective and employer contribution. The plan also needs to be established by the end of the tax year to count towards the return. The other retirement plan up for discussion is the Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) Plan. SEP Individual Retirement Account (IRAs) is another self-employed retirement plan that allows the selfemployed owner to have a retirement plan. This plan is different from a Solo 401(k) plan in a few ways: there is no elective deferral, the plan only allows for pre-tax contributions, and no loans are available with this plan. The biggest difference is that the company can make contributions to their employees along with the business owner. As such, the plan is essentially a profit-sharing plan where the employer contribution can be up to 25% of the employee’s pay, or $61,000 in 2022, whichever is less. Nonetheless, there are some rules to this. Employer contributions must be the same percentage across all employees, but the business owner has discretion over what that percentage will be. In this plan, contributions are immediately vested, and investment decisions are made by the employees. Which is better for you? It depends on your individual situation. If you’re a self-employed owner with no other employees beside your spouse, it may be beneficial to adopt a Solo 401(k) plan. The reason is that even if the company struggles to make a profit, you will still be able to contribute elective deferrals into the plan. This, at the very least, allows you to grow your retirement fund instead of completely missing years where the company simply cannot contribute. This is especially important if you’re over the age of 50 and you can contribute an additional amount

related to catch up. The other benefit is that unlike an SEP plan, you are not limited to pre-tax contributions, but have the option for post-tax contributions. In contrast, a SEP plan may be more beneficial for you if you want to establish benefits to attract employees while the company is still small in size. The company’s ability to decide the percentage of the employer contribution give you flexibility year to year, but still allow you (the self-employed owner) to contribute to your own retirement. There is also less maintenance and fees to deal with when it comes to such a SEP plan. Overall, no matter the plan that is chosen, self-employed individuals should seek to adopt some kind of retirement plan as it is important for their future financial well-being. If you have any further questions about any of these retirement plan and want more detail about some of the tax benefits that comes with adopting such plans, please contact us at ADKF. Have Chapel, Will Travel

Every couple, especially the bride, has their version of a dream wedding in their heads. For a lot of couples it’s a small, intimate wedding. If you fall in this category look no further than Weddings A Go-Go! Weddings A Go-Go is a small and beautiful chapel and wedding venue in the Texas Hill Country. Established in 2019 by the Mistress of Matrimony, Tracy Lindsay. If you are looking for a charming chapel to get married in, you have come to the right place. Weddings A Go-Go acquired the chapel in the heart of the Hill Country to serve couples dreaming of having an outdoor wedding ceremony at whatever location they choose. Whether it’s a fancy catering hall or even in their backyard, couples can have their perfect ceremony with this small, mobile chapel. Tracy created the chapel herself, and with the “I can do this!” attitude and entrepreneurial spirit, Weddings A Go-Go was born! “We are a small team obsessed with bringing the very best information to couples planning their wedding,” said Tracy. “We are here to help you start your happily ever after by creating a special day for you and your significant other! Our packages take the guess work out of planning a small wedding and you can customize each one to your liking. We have the chapel, you choose the location!” TRACY LINDSAY, As many couples are choosing to wed in smaller, more intimate microweddings and minimonys, the MISTRESS OF MATRIMONY wedding venue is changing to accommodate. They offer a wide range of fully featured wedding packages that suit any budget and accommodate any idea. Just want the chapel for an hour? Need chairs? Want help with the appetizers? Weddings a Go-Go is here for you. For the simplest wedding ceremony, opt for the “I Do” package which features chapel delivery and set up, music and a champagne toast. Want something a bit more elaborate? How about a Microwedding or a Miniwedding? A Miniwedding is considered a commitment ceremony between you and your partner and it can include up to 10 people. A Microwedding however, like its name suggests, will typically include a guest list of up to 40 people — often immediate family and super-close friends only. Though tiny in guest count, a Microwedding differs from a Miniwedding. Think of a Microwedding as a cross between an elopement and a big, traditional wedding—and it might just be the perfect compromise to suit your style. “More is not always necessarily more,” says renowned event planner Stefanie Cove. “A Microwedding is for the couple who wants to really focus and spend the majority of their budget on the smaller details, whereas it might be difficult to replicate the same experience for, say, 200 guests. Couples can certainly save money by going the route of Microweddings, though many decide to spend their full budget. Only on less people.” If a smaller, more intimate ceremony in the setting of your choice sounds like a dream, Weddings A Go-Go may be just the right choice for you. Visit their website to learn more and see all of the available packages. BBM
