Don’t Put Your Retirement in “Jeopardy”

D

Do you know what the following days have in common? • July 16, 1990 • July 19, 1998 • September 4, 2000 • October 9, 2007 • September 20, 2018 • February 19, 2020 It's not an easy question, but if this was the Jeopardy gameshow, the correct response would be, "What are the dates when the S&P 500 peaked before a selloff of -15% or more?” OK, let’s try another round of Jeopardy: The answer is “0%.” The appropriate Jeopardy question would be, “What is the percentage of investors that correctly anticipate when market selloffs will start and how far markets will fall?” I know you’re probably saying to yourself that you’ve read, watched, or listened to professional investors who say they sidestepped the big market selloffs or even made a lot of money when the market crashed. My first observation is that individuals tend to have a selective memory of their historical investing track record. It's only natural for people to remember the good decisions and forget the bad decisions. So, I'm skeptical of the number of talking heads claiming victory during these very difficult market environments. My second observation is that while some investors profited during these nerve-shattering market declines, they often lost a lot of money (and time) waiting for the selloff to start. And, while they may have profited in the actual selloff, not one of them knew where the market would bottom out. Therefore, an investor fortunate enough to be positioned correctly at the beginning of a selloff had to make two correct decisions to keep their profits: when to sell and when to buy again. The odds of getting those calls right are

by Justin Pawl, CFA, CAIA, CFP® astronomically low. Let’s try one more question: What emotions do you feel during market selloffs and rallies, and do those emotions influence your investment decisions? The answer should be an emphatic "No," but we're human. Feelings of joy and despair are unavoidable, but successful investors avoid making emotional decisions. I can think of no better example than that of Peter Lynch’s Fidelity Magellan Fund. During the 13 years of Peter Lynch’s management, the Fidelity Magellan Fund generated annual returns averaging 29%. However, according to Fidelity Investments, the average investor lost money in the fund because of their reaction to the strategy's volatility – i.e., they sold after the fund experienced large losses and bought after large gains. It's very easy to get caught up in shortterm market movements and lose perspective on the potential long-term benefits of staying invested. But, as the Magellan Fund exemplifies, doing so can be hazardous to your wealth. It’s also worth remembering that there are no guaranteed returns in investing and that nobody has a crystal ball to accurately predict market movements. Market volatility is unavoidable, and, as a result, so are emotional responses. But making investment decisions based on those emotions is avoidable. The first step in avoiding the peril of emotional decisions is creating a portfolio that combines your financial goals with your ability and willingness to take risk. The second step, which many find more challenging than the first step, is to have the discipline to stick to your portfolio plan through the inevitable ups and downs of the market. This is a simple formula to reach your financial goals, but one that is incredibly difficult for most investors to follow. In this regard, a financial advisor can be an important ally. As with many things in

life, we can often achieve our goals faster with a coach or a mentor. Elite athletes hire specialist training coaches and sports psychologists to help them reach their maximum potential. However, their potential can only be reached when they are calm and “in the zone” during periods of extreme stress. Many successful professionals hire a “career coach” to help them navigate obstacles and opportunities in their business lives. Even the “best of the best” recognize they can benefit from an expert’s wisdom and objective advice. They rely on professionals to provide perspective and discipline during the tough times that keep them on the path to their goals. Just as with successful relationships between coaches and athletes, there must be a good fit between the investor and the financial advisor. As in any relationship, trust is vital. And that trust is built over time. The best financial advisors provide six core values: 1. Organization: Help bring order to your financial life. 2. Accountability: Help you follow through on financial commitments. 3. Objectivity: Bring insights from the outside to help you avoid emotionally driven decisions in important money matters. 4. Proactivity: Work with you to anticipate your life transitions and be financially prepared for them. 5. Education: Explore what specific knowledge will be needed to succeed in your situation. 6. Partnership: Help you achieve the best life possible by working with you to make this possible. You may be surprised that investment returns that “beat the market” are not a core valueadd from a trusted financial advisor. There's a fundamental reason for that. A trusted advisor will work with you to develop a portfolio that is unique to your specific goals and objec-

tives, not bragging rights at the next cocktail party. Moreover, the advisor will ensure you remain focused on your long-term goals and minimize emotional swings as markets ebb and flow. By minimizing mistakes, your capital has the potential to compound growth at a higher rate than if in some years you beat the market, and in other years you dramatically underperform because you try to time the market and sell or buy at the wrong time. Indeed, a survey conducted by Dimensional Fund Advisors highlights the emotional value of a trusted financial advisory relationship.

Source: Dimensional Fund Advisors

I’ll conclude this article with one final round of Jeopardy: Answer: “Everyone” Question: “Who can benefit from speaking with a financial advisor?” An introductory meeting with a financial advisor shouldn’t cost you any more than your time. And that time may end up being one of the best investments you ever make. BBM

Insurance, Done Differently. by Lauren Stumberg

“Sonora Insurance is able to offer the same solutions as some of the much larger insurance agencies in the market, but what sets us apart is that we do it in a hometown atmosphere,” said David Soldano, President of Sonora Insurance Group. “It is truly our culture and our way of doing business that separates us from the competition.” Sonora Insurance Group was founded in 2008 by a group of friends, who just so happened to be insurance industry veterans, right here in Boerne, Texas. The group believed they could make an impact in the equine insurance industry by delivering unmatched service. Throughout the years, the agency has grown from its niche focus on equine and agriculture to become a full-service, independent agency while staying true to its roots of providing personalized and customized insurance solutions. In 2019, Sonora Insurance announced its partnership with Sonora Bank, an organization whose roots trace back to 1900 in Sonora, Texas. “Since partnering with Sonora Insurance Group we have

seen tremendous synergy between our two organizations,” said Bob Malone, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sonora Bank. “The partnership has flourished and allowed both organizations to be able to offer commercial and personal lines of solutions to meet our customers’ needs.” Sonora Bank’s footprint in Boerne goes back to its first branch on West Bandera Road where it opened its doors as the Boerne Banking Center in early 2009. By late 2018, Sonora Bank had opened its second Boerne location on River Road. According to Malone, “It was at the time of opening our second Boerne location that the Bank started thinking about ways to strengthen customer relationships. Offering customers the opportunity to partner with an insurance agency that has shared values as the bank was a natural next step.” It’s fairly typical for banks and insurance agencies to partner for mutual benefit. Insurance is a natural extension of services banking customers need and want. This was true for Sonora Bank and Sonora continued on page 18

Insurance Group as well—especially as neither entity had to change their name! Soldano was recently named President of Sonora Insurance Group in August 2021. He brings with him more than 20 years of banking and business experience to this new role. He joined Sonora Bank in 2005 as a teller and has steadily risen through the ranks to most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Central Loan Processing where he revitalized the bank’s loan processing operations and increased efficiencies to better serve customers. Soldano holds a degree in business administration from the University of Texas—Pan America and is a graduate of the Texas bankers Association Management Development Program. Soldano was named on the 20 Under 40 Brightest Leaders of Tomorrow list by the City of San Angelo. “With David’s strong knowledge of business and his deep experience in sales and marketing, I am confident he will provide the right catalyst for Sonora Insurance Group’s continued growth and success,” Malone added. “When asked to take on the new opportunity with the team at Sonora Insurance Group, I was thrilled at the chance to bring my business background and experience with sales and marketing to tackle this role. The team has been fantastic and welcoming, and we are working hard to meet the needs of the Boerne community and beyond,” said Soldano. Soldano has spent the past several months getting to know the employees and customers and learning more about the agency. He added, “It’s been a lot of listening and hearing the thoughts and priorities of our customers and the team members who support them. While I’m sure you often hear from companies that they have one of the best teams in the business, we really do! Our team genuinely cares about making a difference for our customers and our local community. Based off what I am seeing and hearing, we are working on a long-term

growth strategy that will continue to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.” Under this new leadership, Sonora Insurance Group will continue to have a deep presence in Boerne, but is also looking forward to building the brand and presence in other hill country and west Texas communities, as well as truly aligning with Sonora Bank. Soldano and his family have absolutely loved their move to Boerne. His wife Kassie has planted roots here launching a new business, ClearView Bookkeeping. The couple’s oldest daughter Andi recently graduated from Champion High School and is now in her freshman year at Angelo State University. Their three other kids, Sierra, Hayden and Beckett are all thriving at Boerne ISD. In addition to Soldano, Sonora Insurance currently has three additional producers and five additional support staff. Morgen Bernhard joined the Sonora Insurance Group team four years ago. With over 10 years of insurance agency experience, her focus is on commercial lines. Morgen is a retired rodeo mom to two girls. “If you know Morgen, you know how deeply she cares about our customers and our community. She currently volunteers with the Kendall County 4H Horse Club, serving as Vice President of the Alamo Kountry Kickers Trail Ride Group and is a lifetime member of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, currently serving on the Ambassador Committee,” said Soldano. Brad Akin has been with Sonora Insurance group for five years and his focus is on equine, farm & ranch. He is a graduate of Baylor University and St. Mary’s University School of Law. He and his wife Leslie have been together since they were 14 years old and have two kids, Matt and Marie Claire. Brad embodies the rodeo life – riding, roping and hunting when he’s not out quoting and selling sound insurance solutions. David Immel is another one of our producers focusing on personal lines, farm & ranch. He’s been an agent with Sonora Insurance Group for the past four years and has over 20 years of industry experience. He is a graduate of Boerne High School, as is his wife, Bonnie. They have three kids Henley, Mia and Grady. Immel graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a degree in marketing, and since then has been focused on helping customers find the right insurance solutions to meet their needs. While Sonora Insurance Group has grown to be a multifaceted agency, providing coverage for home, auto, commercial, equine, livestock, farm and ranch and everything in between, their mission remains the same today as it was when they first began – to provide quality service while building relationships with their customers. According to Soldano, “We like to think of ourselves as more than just an insurance agency, we’re your neighbors too!” BBM

35 Years of Rod Run

T

OCTOBER 8-10, 2021 photos by Ron Pritchett

This year marks the 35th Annual Key to the Hills Rod Run! On the weekend of October 8-10th Boerne’s Hill Country Mile will be filled with street rods in a rainbow of beautiful colors, checkered flags and crowds of people flocking to see Texas’ largest pre ’49 Rod Run. The Pride of Texas Street Rod Club was started in August of 1985. The first 15 members adopted the constitution and bylaws of the club and were ready to cruise together in their street rods. Soon after, the group held the first Rod Run on May 2-3rd of 1987 at the Kendall County Fairgrounds with 53 registered participants. The following year, the club decided to move the run to Boerne’s Main Plaza and have the event in October instead of May. Everyone enjoyed having the Rod Run downtown and plans were made to keep the event at the Main Plaza on the second weekend in October each year.

Club member Lanne Brehmer decided that if the event was going to grow it needed some advertising. A beautiful color brochure was designed, printed and mailed to street rodders throughout Texas and neighboring states. Over the years, the event continued to grow due to the club’s hard work, advertisement and street rodders spreading the word. The brochures have become a trademark for the Key to the Hills Rod Run and have become a collector’s item. Local merchants love the Rod Run and the foot traffic it brings to downtown Boerne. They

22

B oerne B usiness M onthly | October 2021

support the event by hanging checkered pennant banners down Main Street and even donate door prizes to the event participants. This year, the event kicks off on October 8th with a meet and greet and dinner for the event participants who come from all over the country to display their pre ’49 street rods. Saturday morning, the street rods will line up down Main Street and around the Main Plaza as people come from near and far to check out these really cool cars. The day’s events include vendors, a Silent Auction, a Door Prize drawing, 50/50 Jar, food booths and shopping. On Saturday evening the participants meet up once again for a cruise through the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Sunday morning, there will be a worship service at 9:30 am around the Main Plaza gazebo, followed

by an awards ceremony. Club meetings, cruises and get-togethers are held monthly and some of the club members even attend rod runs nearly every weekend from March until November. To become a member of The Pride of Texas Street Rod Club one must actively be working on or have a running street rod (pre ’49), pay club dues and attend club meetings and activities. Because of the success of the Key to the Hills Rod Run, several articles have been written about the event in national publications including Street Scene, American Rodder and Street Rodder. Throughout the years, the club has been very active in charity activities in the community, being able to give assistance to both organizations and individuals in need. Participants come from as far away as California, Florida and even Alaska. In fact, this event brings more participants from other states than any other event hosted in Boerne. Be sure not to miss the colors, the chrome and the nostalgia of this fun event that has become a Boerne tradition! BBM

We’ve all done it, you check your email one last time before bed and see an email from a client or co-worker. Before you know it, you are a couple hours in on a project that should have waiting until the morning! Or maybe you’re out to dinner with friends and get a work-related phone call. You know you shouldn’t, but you go ahead and take the call. Next thing you know you’ve spent way too long on the phone and missed out on that coveted down time. Technology is great, but a world where we are always connected makes it all too easy for 9 to 5 to morph into 24/7. Check out the next page for a few tips to help you figure out how to strike that work/life balance.

Quick quiz:

How’s Your Work/Life Balance?

My family and friends often complain about the amount of time I spend at work: I work during my lunch break: I am always tired: I never have time to exercise or for self care: I do not have any hobbies: Time off/vacations are hard to find time for: Work is always on my mind: I answer work texts & emails at night and on the weekends:

You’re getting there. You’re life is probably fairly balanced, but could just use some minor adjustments here and there. A little work and you’ll be on your way to the perfect balance.

Truly Clock Out

Between email notifications, text messages and social media alerts, we find ourselves constantly on the clock. While technology does make many tasks much easier, now it is more difficult than ever to stop working at the end of the day. All of this constant connectivity can wear us down. It is important to set boundaries between our work and personal lives so we don’t end up exhausted and burned out. Setting defined boundaries is one way to alleviate this problem. Maybe you make a rule that you don’t check emails on the weekend? Maybe you don’t reply to non-personal texts after 7:00pm? Whatever you decide, make sure that you clearly communicate this to your employer, coworkers or clients and then stick to those rules. This will allow you to get the break you need so that you can give it your all when you clock back in.

Focus on Being More Productive

For most people, the bulk of their workday is not actually spent working. Much time is spent surfing the web, scrolling through your phone and talking to co-workers. All those little things add up. Want to get a better idea of how much time you are actually being productive during the day? Why not keep a log and track your time? If you find that much or your time that should be spent working is actually being wasted, try to make a conscious effort to cut back or block off a certain period of time to do them. Having a better sense of how you spend your day may just help you to get more done when on the clock – resulting in a more rewarding down time.

Realize It’s a Work in Progress

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Old habits are hard to break and achieving that work/life balance might be harder than you think. It is important to do your best to change these behaviors, but to also realize that things happen that sometimes will require your off-hours attention. Just remember, even the small steps are getting you closer to a happier, healthier you. In the end, working longer and harder is not always better. More work can mean more stress and that can affect the quality of your work and your performance. Knowing when it is time to step away and take a break can be one of the best things you can do for not only yourself, but also your career.BBM
