COVER STORY | JOE FAMULARO

Italian American Chef Celebrates Family Food Tradition in Award-Winning Cookbook Italian American chef and award-winning author Joe Famularo has penned a cookbook that is equal parts autobiography and Italian recipe book. Combining his culinary expertise and tales of boisterous family gatherings over hearty meals, his Xlibris-published book Crazy for Italian Food earned him another literary acclaim as it won the top award in the Cooking/Baking fiction category of a prestigious book award-giving body.

“...this story underscores the importance of strong family ties.” This new recognition ups the ante of his already impressive literary portfolio. His two other cook books titled The Joy of Grilling (Barrons) and The Joy of Pasta (Barrons) became bestsellers, with sales reaching over half a million copies. This prolific author was also a senior vice-president for McGraw Hill Publishers.

Joe’s magic in the kitchen interweaves with the story of an immigrant Italian family in New York City set against the backdrop of the Great Depression era as narrated in Crazy for Italian Food. From homemade pastas and dough recipes to women’s pregnancy fears and rearing of children in the early 20th century, the human element paints an honest writing that makes the readers almost feel like a visitor in the Famularo household. He also noted that this story underscores the importance of strong family ties, and reflects his gratefulness for being in a functional family despite many societal challenges. Even before self-publishing through Xlibris, Joe has already had multiple literary recognitions under his belt. Hailed as a “natural born and inspired cook” by The New York Times, Joe has written 10 books to date and received a couple of James Beard culinary writing awards, another one from the International Association of Culinary Professional, and the Maria Luigia-Duchessa de Parma in Italy. He has also written in magazines, including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Bon Appetit, House and Garden, Gourmet, Coastal Living, Grilling, and Tastes of Italia. Joe has likewise self-published through Trafford Publishing his children’s books, CHIARA’s Bite of THE BIG APPLE and TACO/FATSO.

Former Escort Bares Her Dark Past with Ten Thousand Men Having battled with and conquered her personal demons, Xlibris author Gwyneth Montenegro mustered up her courage to bare her life as a former escort.

She then wrote and self-published through Xlibris her memoir titled 10,000 Men and Counting. Contrary to what the title may imply, her story underlines not only her sexual encounters with more than ten thousand men during her fifteen years of escorting but also her redemption from such an adversity and her transformation to becoming a respected businesswoman and an Xlibris author.

“The thought of being a first-time author was challenging enough, but the unknown ramifications of revealing a rather secret past terrified me.”

I remember the trepidation I felt when I decided to pen my title, 10,000 Men and Counting. The thought of being a first-time author was challenging enough, but the unknown ramifications of revealing a rather secret past terrified me. It had, up until the release of the book, been a secret that I had kept for many years. My closest family and friends knew of my past, but to share my life story with the whole world was on a new level of nervousness altogether.

Self-Publishing through Xlibris

One of the difficulties with traditional publishing is that you often need to sign away the rights to the story. I certainly wasn’t going to let that happen. It’s my life, it’s my story, and I sure as hell wasn’t

It is no surprise that in just a span of two weeks after its release, her story has drawn wide media attention, with over two hundred thousand views of her book video on YouTube and hundreds of features from celebrated newspapers, including the Daily Mail and the Australian. Out of the Shadows Stories and books tend to inspire readers into becoming writers, no matter how old they are or what nations they come from.

While I wrote my book Secret Intelligence, Dark Rim, I always had high hopes my book would be something great. That was a naïve thought, and I often laugh at myself for that, but this doesn’t mean it isn’t true. My book has been great to everyone I know who hears about it, but more importantly, writing this book has been a great success for myself because I gained the invaluable status of an author. Secret Intelligence, Dark Rim was born through my inspiration and determination. I remember I always urged myself to finish the book no matter what happened, no matter if anyone outside there would appreciate my book. So let me tell you a little about what I wrote before continuing.

Authors should be always writing no matter what, scrollable text

Dark Rim tells a story about fourteen-year-old Nathan Doyle, who is pursued by the world’s most dangerous criminal organisation, the Ventures. I am lucky I’m not Nathan.

Thus, it made me a self-published author today, with Partridge Singapore. I officially joined Partridge Singapore in March 2014. With hopes of reaching more readers around the world, I’ve put in all the efforts I can.

“Writing this book has been a great success for myself because I gained the invaluable status of an author.”

Whenever I was too thrilled by the story, I could shut my computer down and take a rest from the harsh, secret world I had created. This is one of the greatest abilities of an author. We create worlds, lives, and people who don’t really exist in the reality, and convince readers to believe everything is true as they read. And by doing that, it’s my pleasure. Sometimes, while revising my story, I try to forget what I’ve written and enjoy my story as a reader, although in the back of my mind, I know what will be happening.

Love at First Scent I’ve been writing poetry since fourteen, and I aspire to be a film novelist. For my book, Of Roses and Gerberas, a novel titled The Language of Flowers (2011), written by Vanessa Diffenbaugh, and the film titled Love Happens (2009), directed by Brandon Camp, were among my inspirations. I love romance, and I ensure that it is portrayed in my book as contemporary and humorous as possible, yet heartwarming at the same time. Of Roses and Gerberas enchants and enlightens us with a story of a male celebrity actor (Trent Emanuel) who falls in love with a blind commoner (Beverly Abner) when he visits her flower shop for the first time. Welcome to their bittersweet love story, worth remembering for a lifetime.

“Love is universal, and without its presence, human beings would not exist at all.” Knowing the fact that every flower carries a meaning of its own, I realised that my characteristic is defined by my favorite flower, gerbera. Not all girls would prefer roses. I asked my contacts around, and surprisingly, I could see such resemblance. It took me four years to complete it. Love is universal, and without its presence, human beings would not exist at all. Moreover, it is also not meant to be practiced and/or utilised for name, fame, and game. I am working on a prequel actually, and I’m currently at chapter 3.

I’m hoping for Of Roses and Gerberas to be filmed in Hollywood, and at the moment, the Hollywood marketing is still in progress. It was very fast-moving since I had completed my manuscript and all of my questions were wellexplained by Partridge Singapore staff. Self-discovery is extremely important. Know what you want, and don’t give up on your big dreams. It could be exceptionally nerve-racking at first, but the result would be mind-blowing. My novel consists of poetry and the sensation of watching a film through reading it. Hence, it is not just a cliché sentence-to-sentence book. I am a fan of writing stories in the form of poetry too. I’m doing something worth investing with my hard-earned money, and I wish not to live with regrets in my life. Never underestimate your own abilities, and if you knew that you could express your wild imaginations in words, you should be writing at least a phrase by now.

The inspiration for writing Transcending Sorrow and Suffering is the reflection of my passion to read, learn, and experience the spiritual way of living, which I relentlessly followed throughout my life. It is mainly to share my thoughts for common good of all through self-improvement leading to total transformation so that people go beyond sorrow and suffering. The book is the outcome of almost twenty-five years of research in the spiritual field, but specifically to shape the book it took me almost two years to complete my mission of writing it.

A Soldier’s Spirit My book is the outcome of almost twenty-five years of research in the spiritual field. This is my inner quest and interest to read, learn, and experience the charm of spiritual living, which has made life festive and joyful.

It has always been my passion to read spiritual literature, which I have promoted in my life, uninterrupted. Ultimately, having gained enormous spiritual knowledge, I finally decided to shape my experience into a book form. The extensive reading of books and learning developed spontaneously and automatically the refined style of expression in a normal and natural way.

The core essence of life is to actualize our real nature of divinity (ultimate truth) so that we are empowered with will, wisdom, courage, confidence, purity, peace, love, joy, and compassion to dissolve conflict and chaos and to bring discipline and order in the world for harmonious living. To achieve this goal we have to make our minds cool, still, steady, and unwavering through techniques given in chapter 13. The entire focus in the book is to purify and refine the mind, and through that we can transcend sorrow and suffering. The theme of the book is to focus on self-improvement through inner evolvement so that eternal divine and spiritual virtues emerge, which transforms you by shifting your attention from being mind-conscious to soul-conscious. The real transformation happens when human behavior is refined to develop wisdom, insight, and understanding through purifying the mind.

Rediscovering the Soul of Poetry The best definition of a person is the philosophy of life that he or she subscribes to. Several years ago I read something in a Chinese classic that said: “Be the valley of the universe so all things will come to you.” This is the idea about openness, transparency, acceptance, and trust. These things are not easy to practice because others can take advantage of you, but I have found this to be the path of least resistance, of least struggle, and also of least disappointment. You accept what life gives you, and then you make best use of it.

“My definition of good poetry is that it should arise from the soul of the poet and should directly touch the soul of the reader.”

I am working on a collection of poems inspired by themes and stories from the Indian mythology. I am also doing research for a novel, with the story set in America of the sixties. I am aggressively promoting my book through interviews, structured presentations, and talking points for the social media. My book was also launched in the US, at a ceremony celebrating South Asian poetry, in Washington, DC, in late August.

I love poetry in the four languages that I know— English, Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi. In English language, poetry is going through a grave crisis. My definition of good poetry is that it should arise from the soul of the poet and should directly touch the soul of the reader. This kind of poetry is hard to find these days. Modern poetry has no soul. By bringing Ghalib, India’s greatest poet, to the attention of the American and Western readers, I am offering them a choice—something which is as passionate and as soul-stirring as Rumi. I believe whether you write a short story, a novel, or a poem, it must make the reader pause and think about his or her life and its purpose. Walt Whitman was a poet who did that. In Urdu my favorites are Ghalib, Faiz, and Firaq. In prose I have great liking for writers like Leo Tolstoy, Nikos Kazantzakis, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and I find their works highly transformative. So whatever I ever wrote I always thought about the impact I was making.

In the words of Ralph Russell, a British scholar, Ghalib was the greatest poet South Asia ever produced. He wrote both in Persian and Urdu. My book The Treasure is a free verse rendition of his Urdu Divan. Why free verse? Because that is the only way the spirit of the poetic work in one language can be passed on to the readers in another language.

The message for my readers is that your story needs to be written down, because above anything else, it reveals “you” to yourself. The sequel to the first novel is almost done. There are no events planned as such, but I keep putting my book up on Internet sites every now and then for its marketing and promotion. My most favourite part of my publishing experience was the speed at which the Partridge India team finished the publication of the novel, the chief role having been played by my publishing consultant, who rightfully reassured me that I was not making a mistake in selecting an Author Solutions imprint to publish my novel.

From Eyewitness to Writer I am a schoolteacher. I teach English to high school students. Death of a Robin is the first novel of a three-part series. I have been writing for the last thirty years but never found a publisher; hence, I did not publish anything before. Thanks to Partridge India, my novel has finally seen the light of day. I also write short stories and poems. I have read some of the greatest writers in the English language who have shaped my thinking and writing style and have been greatly influenced by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Salman Rushdie, and Arundhati Roy. My novel is a true story about real people and real places. It tells the story of Boniah Deut and his sons, whose lives are impacted adversely in the city of Constantia. Since I was the main witness to the events in the novel, I felt the story needed to be told to the world. It has taken me thirty years to understand what really happened.

“... your story needs to be written down, because above anything else, it reveals ‘you’ to yourself.” My advice to aspiring authors is: 1. Writing is all about rewriting. Do not be satisfied by your work for at least the first ten drafts. 2. The best time for writing is from 4.00 a.m. to 7.00 a.m.

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

Write What You Don’t Know Writing what you don’t know can break your literary career even before you make a fairly decent one. But that very risk would force you out of your comfort zone and strengthen your resolve to be a better writer.

If that eagerness to seize every fiber of human emotion to reduce you readers to laughter, panic, tears, or awe has brought you to the brink of madness, hang in there. It’s the madness that makes a great writer. More so if you plunge into an ambitious, foreign trail because you believe this to the very core: you might end up scathed but victorious. Eudora Welty gave a different spin to it: “Write what you don’t know about what you know.” We dare you to face your writing fears and put your sanity on the line by braving the unknown. Doing so may be the only way to face your writing monsters and keep you and your story, well, “sane.”

Treading the unknown enriches you. Learning a new language, engaging in a new hobby, or trying something outrageous is proven to be beneficial to your mental well-being. Writing what you don’t know? Now that’s two strokes of luck! Research a scene. This may require you to go through your character’s dilemma first-hand, so you live and breathe him/her and finally weave your tapestry of written words to depict that situation. You pull this off through research, research, research. You might need to go to extremes. The movie “Stranger than Fiction” stars Emma Thompson who plays a writer famous for killing her main characters. A scene shows her standing on the edge of a tall building, deliberately throwing herself slightly off balance, because this is what she feels the closest she can get to experiencing death. If you’re writing historical fiction, never has the digital-era adage “Google before you post” been more useful. With Google’s massive information spelled in an endless string of Os in a split second, the web is your leverage over writers from the past. This information overload, however, can be your bane if you’re not wary of your sources. Use your writer’s meticulous eye. You develop a better understanding of the world and yourself. And sometimes it’s the cold, hard truth that our everyday existence is so lame compared to that of imaginary creatures. On the other hand, this makes you (and most readers) develop empathy in a largely indifferent world. You discover that you can channel your wicked inclinations into something creative. >>

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

Writing Self-help Books Research shows that self-help and inspiration books are currently the third most popular genre by sales revenues.

For various reasons, life seems to have become harder in the past few decades, and as people are becoming more educated, they are also coming to expect more from life. The self-help genre aims to fulfil these needs and give people direction and peace of mind. So let’s jump in and see some key features of a successful self-help book.

Be extremely structured. When writing a book of this nature, there is a temptation to ramble and to assume that readers will find everything as relevant as you do. However, one thing to bear in mind is that people looking to improve themselves are looking for clarity in their lives, for structure, and need things to be presented to them in a clear and structured format. A glance at some of the best-selling self-help books will serve as an example. Check out Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Successful People, and Tal BenShahar’s works, such as Being Happy. Use personal anecdotes -- but don’t make it an autobiography. Further to the above, personal stories are indeed highly effective. Many readers want to feel a kinship with the author and to know that you understand their pain. At the same time, resist the urge to tell your life story, and instead use examples from the lives of other people. Ben-Shahar uses an excellent example of an Oxford academic to show how perfectionism ultimately causes depression and self-destruction, and Tolle gives illustrative quotes from Marcus Aurelius, one of the few true philosopher-kings in history. Anticipate readers’ questions. The prime example of this is Tolle’s The Power of Now which is actually written in a question-and-answer format. Again, readers want clarity and peace of mind, and the best way to accomplish this is to anticipate their questions and directly answer them. For help on this, give your manuscript to a friend and ask for feedback. Unlike a novel, you do not need to create a storyline or a character, so this takes less time. Give suggestions for both short-term and long-term. In Tal Ben-Shahar’s books and lectures, he criticises the self-help genre for generally offering simplistic, short-term solutions to serious problems. And he is right: we see titles like “Get Happy Today”, “Change Your Life TODAY”, etc. The road to self-improvement and peace of mind is not short, and requires

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

Your Guide to Dystopian Fiction Let your dystopia come to life in print, and invite readers to inhabit your beautifully dark parallel universe.

An imaginary story with your oddly beautiful yet twisted setting and characters makes for a perfect dystopian recipe. A dystopian tale is fiction writing twice the fun, as you further fictionalize something already imaginary. If readers turn to books for refuge, perhaps writers create dystopia to evade and satirize a generally accepted worldview the best way they know how. Nothing stirs a dystopian novelist’s imagination quite like the writing prompt “what if?” foreboding a bleak future in a concocted alter-world. Such a dreaded possibility is the gifted storyteller’s playground. Learn from some iconic authors and their dystopian reveries. Here are some dystopian novels that may help you build your own alter-universe.

Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Haruki Murakami Murakami is considered an influential postmodern literary writer, hailed as “among the world’s greatest living novelists.” Told in split narrative, each chapter of Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World alternately recounts the respective journey of two unnamed narrators in hard-boiled wonderland in Tokyo, Japan and the end of the world in a strange town. The narrator in hard-boiled wonderland is a human data encryptor called a Calcutec whose subconscious is programmed to process confidential information under a government-supported organization referred to as the System. An old and eccentric scientist formerly working for the System hires the Calcutec to assist in a research holed up in a Tokyo sewer. Unbeknownst to the narrator, he is the sole survivor of the old man’s botched experiment, which forces the former to exist in his own subconscious-created story called “The End of the World.” The story hints at a co-dependent relationship between the System and its rival company the Factory. The System protects the Calcutec-encrypted data from the Factory, which illegally traffics the information for huge black market profits. While both organizations appear rivals, they are interdependent in that the System creates the data and the Factory steals them. This also implies that both are run by just one entity. Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell The cultural impact that a novel leaves long after it was published speaks for an author’s rad storytelling skills. Nineteen Eighty-Four has gifted the English language with terms such as Big Brother, Room 101, the Thought Police, thoughtcrime, unperson, memory hole, doublethink, newspeak, Orwellian, and “speak” suffixes (e.g., netspeak – Internet slang language). Orwell’s infamous novel published in 1949 takes place in what is seen as a futuristic British society called Airstrip One, one of the world’s three superstates in the year 1984. The protagonist, Winston Smith, rebels against the despotic government, the Party, led by Big Brother, resulting in the former’s imprisonment, torture, and “rehabilitation” in the Ministry of Love. Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury A world where books are forbidden is perhaps a writer’s worst nightmare. Maybe Ray Bradbury’s deepest fears are depicted in Fahrenheit 451, a futuristic US where books are banned and burned, hence the title, which the legendary author believed to be the temperature that auto ignites paper. This parallel universe projects the possible consequences of a bookless world and a culture that is partial to sources of entertainment, namely television and radio. Setting fire to her curiosity, the 17-year-old protagonist named Clarisse refuses to be swayed by the status quo. Her pressing questions lead Guy Montag, a “fireman” (whose job is to burn books) to question the world around him as well. It is no surprise that the novel remains relevant today, what with the influence of electronic media on reading and the dangers of cutting corners in obtaining information from the Internet. A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange follows the sociopathic tendencies of teenage Alex and his “droogs,” (Alexspeak for friends) his arrest, and “treatment” in a nearfuture England. He undergoes a government-approved conditioning therapy called the Ludovico Technique aimed at sickening him at the mere thought of violence but also rendering him without free will. The therapy results in an aversion to his favorite classical music, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, played during the so-called treatment. He also attempts suicide, thereby prompting the government to mask the bad publicity of the failed experiment. The story was adapted into a play and a controversial film by Stanley Kubrick, further catapulting the novel to its status as a modern classic.

Xlibris Author Sejla Grahovic Aids in Flood Relief Efforts for Bosnia A low-pressure area, recorded to be the strongest ever in Southeastern and Central Europe in 120 years, inundated and caused deaths and billions of euros’ worth of damage in BosniaHerzegovina and neighboring countries in May this year. Bosnian native and Xlibris author Sejla Grahovic helped in the relief operations led by the Bosnian American community in St. Louis, Missouri and talked about her humanitarian deed in an interview on US TV news channel Fox News. She also promoted her self-published memoir While You Played, I Ran, released through Xlibris in March 2014. While You Played, I Ran narrates how at a young age she witnessed the horrors of the Bosnian war in the early 90s. Sejla, along with her parents, moved to the US after the war, in hopes of living a better life. Her story comes out almost two decades after the post-World War II conflict. She recalls her biggest challenge in moving to the US was learning English and starting their lives from scratch.

Surinder Deol’s Book on Ghalib Released at Kavi Sammelan in Washington Partridge India author Surinder Deol recently launched his book, The Treasure: A Modern Rendition of Ghalib’s Love Poetry, at a ceremony in Washington DC celebrating poets from South Asia. Ghalib (1797-1869) was an Indian-Persian poet who gained pre-eminence during the late Mughal Empire. His fame, like that of fellow South Asia poet Rumi, continues strong to this day. The event, titled the 7th Annual Independence Day Mushaira-Kavi Sammelan (“mushaira” is Urdu for “poetic symposium”) was held on August 30 and organized by the Aligarh Alumni Association and the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin. “The beauty of Ghalib’s poetry is that your appreciation of his poetry grows more as you listen to it”, said N. K. Mishra, Minister, Cultural Affairs, Embassy of India, at the meet, who also released a book, The Treasure: A Modern Rendition of Ghalib’s Love Poetry by Surinder Deol. “Surinder Deol’s rendition of Ghalib’s poetry into English is a reflection of his in-depth understanding and sincere love for Ghalib’s multifaceted poetic compositions”, said Dr. A. Abdullah, commenting on the book. In his talk, Deol said Ghalib became popular because one can find expressions of innovative thoughts full of metaphors and similes, and also a wide range of topics and subjects in his poetry.

Also in attendance were fellow poets Aziz Qureshi, Baqar Zaidi, Daler Deol Aashna, Gulshan Madhur, Kiran Nath, Mohammad Hussain Imam, Rakesh Khandelwal, Razi Raziuddin, Satyapal Anand, Vandana Singh, and Vishakha Thaker. “This book is a welcome addition to the slim corpus of Ghalib in English translation, not only because it has a sure method, but also because it does not sacrifice the essential Ghalib,” said Prof. Satyapal Anand, presiding over the book release ceremony.
