COVER STORY | PAUL CARTER

Doc Carter’s Pastoral Pastimes Certain professions garner substantially more insight into the varying characteristics of humans and the subsequent accounts that can prevail. A general practitioner would arguably be at the top of this list, with patient after patient filtering in and out of the clinic, each with a unique account to prompt the rest of their anecdotal personalities. Inevitably, this makes for an interesting collection of tales.

Xlibris author and country general practitioner Dr. Paul Carter moved to the foothills of the mountains in Victoria, Australia, twentyeight years ago to set up a practice. He was fascinated by the richness of the characters and their tolerance for one another. Carter was also inspired by the fact that country societies are jumbled up. They are too small to allow for groups of people from particular backgrounds or professions to form, which confine people to meeting those who think the same as they do—e.g. groups of dentists or taxidermists.

>>

Eight years ago, Carter had a treasure trove of tales, so he decided to put pen to paper. At the beginning of the year, Tales of a Country Doctor was published, which received an outstanding review on Kirkus. The publishing process was prolonged by the need to get permission from everyone identifiable in the stories, to use material about them and to accommodate requested changes. Carter has since released The Further Tales of a Country Doctor, as his head is still full of stories and as he says, “There is far more material on the cutting-room floor than has so far appeared in my two books.”

“There is far more material on the cutting-room floor than has so far appeared in my two books.”

The message that Carter would like convey to his readers through his writing is that human beings have an innate goodness within them and are happy to express that goodness if they are given even half a chance. Carter’s practice is a very busy one. He worked on his own for many years, but these days, he has several younger doctors helping him, making his workload substantially less onerous. The practice focuses on community needs and recently won the Victorian Rural Practice of the Year Award. Apart from his interest in writing, Carter also loves to paint. His passion is portrait painting, and every year, he disciplines himself enough

THE A LIST | TITUS ANDREW M. BONIFACIO

Ten-Year-Old Author Aids in the Literacy of Underprivileged Children

Titus showed signs of precociousness, revealed his mom, Jean M. Pioso. At eight months, he tinkered with colored pencils using both hands, while another pencil was hooked over his ear. He has always been all ears to all kinds of stories; he would even grab books, newspapers, even junk mail and receipts because he wanted to hear what they contain. He is grateful for his mom, who made sure he grew up in an environment conducive to developing his interests. The juvenile author, with the help of his supportive mother, published his book through Xlibris in December 2013. “My mom is my inspiration. She is always busy, but she is always on top of what she does, especially when it comes to me.”

Engaging Readers to Pitch In Creative Ideas for His Xlibris Book

Encouraging his readers to be more creative, Titus illustrated his book in black and white, so that they can color the drawings. He added:

Titus and his mom have been traveling on the weekends to promote his Xlibris book when he’s off from school. “I’ve been to a lot of book tours, book talks, and book signings. My first book tour was in Tucson, Arizona, for their Annual Tucson Festival of Books, and then followed by the L.A Times Festival of Books in Los Angeles, California. I had a very successful signing. It was a great experience because I was the only ten-year-old kid doing signing in my booth. Kids, parents, and even grandparents were lining up to see me and wanted to have a selfie with me, and of course to get a copy of my book. For me, that was the best part. I had a book tour in Boston, Massachusetts, for the AARP Spring Conference and Fall Conference in San Diego as well. I did book talks and signings in schools and libraries in California. The most I was excited about was my participation in the International Book Fair in Miami, Florida, last November 21 to 23, 2014.”

THE A LIST | RANJANA KAMO

Prolific and Profound Ranjana Kamo talks about her second book in the past twelve months, Out of Their Shadows. Her first title, God Walks My Dreams, is an inspiring story of struggles and romance. Congratulations to Ranjana on being a prolific writer who tackles deep themes of life and love. “I have often seen people give up easily and many times just at the brink of success. There are social pressures to take up jobs and careers suited to your socioeconomic or family status, which could be just in contrast to your aptitude and interest. This leads to frustration, which keeps building within the individual and is bound to be destructive over time. I have also observed often that some individuals are unaware of the great talents hidden in their personalities, which seem to take a backseat in the daily humdrum of life’s tensions and worries. Life can definitely be at its best when we get an opportunity to build on our talents and find success, and this does not happen too often.

“Life can definitely be at its best when we get an opportunity to build on our talents...”

“Out of Their Shadows touches upon these subjects and builds around the life of two individuals trying to discover the purpose and aim of their existence. It is the story of Nita and Aman. Nita’s life is led by an invisible force, and Aman is struggling to get visibility in the visible world. The story takes them through the undulating path of their life together through failures, successes, love, and much more, to redesign their destiny. Readers should be able to relate to the characters of this book with ease, as their issues and struggles are genuine. “Being a banker with a hectic schedule, it gets difficult to find time for writing, but as it is my passion, I try to squeeze in every extra minute that I get for my books. I hope the book can inspire the readers and help them look at life with a new perspective.”

THE A LIST | YENPRI LAYPIL

A True Fan of Fantasy Encouraged by his parents to read widely, Partridge Africa author Yenpri Laypil joined the local community library at a very young age, where he first fell in love with reading.

“I then came to a stage where I felt that with my own passion for writing and the creative process, the time had come to create something significantly fresh and new. That is when the story of Outcast of the Dark Knight was conceived, which was about nine years ago. I carefully molded the story to what it is now, and, being a PhD scholar of biotechnology with a passion for writing thought-provoking stories, I revel in unleashing the field of all possibilities through my writing with inspirational and illimitable imagination. My fervent wish to my readers is for them to join me on this indelibly exciting journey and enjoy reading my work as much as I enjoy writing it.

“From the Hardy Boys to The Lord of the Rings, I was an avid reader of fiction. This love for reading permeated through to my writing, and it was in primary school where I first expressed my imagination through writing short essays, and I won many essay competitions at school. I was always a fan of fantasy, and I also loved watching cartoons and fantasy movies from a very young age. I took childhood stories like ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and completely altered them, injecting a humorous slant into the original stories. In high school, I then graduated to writing more imaginative short stories with more original characters, which further developed my technique as a creative writer.

“Outcast of the Dark Knight concerns a young man named Valkin Kendor. He is abducted and finds himself caught in a deadly feud between the barbarians and the other races within his world. Unwise to the true nature of the real world beyond his humble home, Valkin is quickly educated by his captors, who gradually transform into his companions, purging him of his former ignorance by showing him the world as it is and as it should be. Valkin is propelled into a life of intense training, engaging with extremely powerful and influential warriors from diverse walks of life in his own search for meaning and identity. Not knowing who to trust and who to obey, Valkin resolves to endure the rollercoaster of adventure and discovery in the hope of desperately finding answers to the burning questions within. Who is he really, and what is his purpose? “My overall experience through Partridge Africa has been fantastic! After an unsuccessful attempt to publish with another publisher, my father heard of Partridge Publishing, and he encouraged me to get in contact with Partridge and explore the endeavor further with them. After learning more about Partridge and their value-added services and interacting with their friendly and efficient consultants, I was convinced that Partridge Africa Publishing was a good home for my first book, Outcast of the Dark Knight: Volume 1—Establishment. “I believe that self-publishing with a company such as Partridge Africa provides

THE A LIST | REX ROY

Tackling a Tough Topic

Rex Roy, author of Save Him, tells us about his book and inspirations. For reasons of his own, the author does not want to reveal his identity, and so he has written his book under a pen name.

“Punishments are not at all a treatment for addiction. Enlightenment is the key.” “My book is an imaginary fiction supposed to be happening in a dental college. A professor of the dental college catches a student smoking ganja in the rooftop of the dental college. As per the rules, he has to be reported and punished. But the professor himself is an ex-addict and very well knows that punishments are not a treatment for addiction. So he narrates his story to the student in hope of reverting him. “The news about spreading addiction in school campus alarmed me. My kids are also growing up. What should I do? What can I do? This is my first step towards a sacred goal—a clean campus.

>>

During my student life, I witnessed several people spoiling their lives in addiction. Recently, the media is blasting with news about drug addiction in primary schools. So they are starting young. It is an alarming situation. When I was a student, only a minority got to professional colleges, and among them, only a small minority experienced addiction. But if they start young, it will spread like wildfire.

“I am a dental surgeon, working as a tutor in a dental college in India. Some of the incidents in my professional life, i.e., as a dental student and later as the tutor, inspired me to write this book.

“The message I wish to convey is simple: Punishments are not at all a treatment for addiction. Enlightenment is the key. “Give this book to someone whom you know is an addict. After a few days or weeks, ask him or her an opinion about the book. Start a conversation with him about the book— your opinion about the book, some incidence described in the book, some quotes, etc., regardless whether the other person had read it or not. This book can act as a starter. Develop a rapport with him or her. Never discuss their addiction before developing the rapport. All of them need someone who understands, someone who listens to them and not an adviser. So talk with them and listen to them. Gradually, carefully, and step-by-step approach the problem. You can see how they collapse and discuss about their problems. Correct it or take measures to correct it. We can save them. “Self-publishing is the future of the publishing industry. Book publishing is a business and so profit-oriented. All books may not bring the necessary profits. But it may contain a wealth of knowledge. So what will we do? Self-publish. We need books for the cultural and spiritual growth and development. “The wonderful experiences I had with Partridge India have inspired me to write

SOPA DE LETRAS | ANA LILIA ORTIZ

Ana Lilia Ortiz:

Palibrio, acompañamiento paso a paso

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

How to Make Your Manuscript Lean— but Not Mean!

So you’ve finished your manuscript—congratulations! Now it is time to move on to the editing phase. For many writers, this is the part of writing that they dread. With this in mind, we’ve tried to make it more palatable by applying an apt food metaphor. This will help you remember it better as well.

Chopping. Hopefully you will not have to do much of this, as it is a painful part of the editing process. Nonetheless, there may be parts of your manuscript, especially at the beginning, that end up being totally unrelated to the plot. These may even consist of an entire chapter or two! If so, it will be best to remove them. A side story that does not develop would also be a good example of something that is “chop-worthy”! This stage is concerned with the coherence of the book, and a lack of coherence will be the first thing noticed by readers—and reviewers! Slicing. The slicing phase requires a bit more finesse and can also be painful. Often, this part is the most personal—it may involve taking a character or a speech that you are very fond of and excising it from your text. The slicing stage requires you to read each chapter and closely assess the relevance of each conversation, narration, and character. P.G. Wodehouse, the creator of the classic “Jeeves” stories, used to put each page separately on a type of clothesline and examine them. This phase is the most concerned with maintaining flow. Trimming. This stage involves taking out a sentence or paragraph, or even just phrases or words that do not move the story forward. Remember that casual, everyday conversation does not have much relevance

in a story. You will also need to pay attention to run-on sentences, which are especially common when writing a novel. Adverbs can also be undesirable, and authors such as Stephen King and Mark Twain have been very vocal about their dislike for even a moderate use of that part of speech. Seasoning. We have now arrived at the most enjoyable stage. Here, you get to reward yourself for all of your hard editing work by conservatively adding a few small things that you feel your manuscript may lack. To begin, you may want to have a look at your verbs: if you’ve used some of the same verbs over and over, you can make some variations. Likewise, try to use some descriptive verbs; rather than saying that mice “run,” you can say that they “scurry.” In a similar vein, you can use some variations on adjectives, if you notice that you have used the same ones too often. Finally, in case you were too consumed with writing the plot and action and forgot to describe your characters, perhaps a few lines of how they look will be helpful to the reader. Just make sure not to go overboard on any of these, or you will need to do some more trimming!

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

Write Your Novel in Three Hundred Words or Less A sunset always comes out splendid, in life or in still life, whether taken by an amateur or a pro, even devoid of photo touchups. Real beauty needs no embellishments. The same goes for writing—a superb story sometimes comes in a small package.

“Words could betray you if you chose the wrong ones, or mean less if you used too many,” said American young-adult fiction author Robyn Schneider. The legendary Ernest Hemingway put his literary knack to the test and wrote what is believed to be the shortest story of all time, the outcome of a bet between him and writer friends. His six-word story reads: For sale: baby shoes, never worn. These six words paint a sullen back story and may evoke a glum reaction from readers. The innocent advert is perhaps just among the many paid ads in a newspaper, but it contains the most agonizing six words to a no-longer-expectant mother. This succinct storytelling is called a short-short story, now more commonly known as flash fiction or micro fiction. Dare yourself to write down the barest of bare bones, and create a pellucid prose of three hundred words or less. Because sometimes, readers need not consume a chunk of words to feel sated. All they need are small, easy bites. Here are some pointers on shaping your short-but-sweet micro novel. >>

1. Read more short story writers. Learn from the terse literary style of old and contemporary short story writers who can say so much in a few words. While the word count for this kind of story typically ranges from 2,500 to 7,500 words, reading this genre is a good start, to wean yourself from the more descriptive style of novelists (if you are accustomed to reading them) and weed out words to reduce your story to the bare essentials. You must know by now that reading and writing go hand in hand and that reading more writers in your chosen genre is essential to honing your craft. 2. Employ the elements of news writing. Because you don’t have the luxury of words, apply the 5Ws and 1H questions to plot-hole-proof your story. • Who is it about? • What happened? • When did it take place?

• Where did it take place? • Why did it happen? • How did it happen?

3. Add a human element to the 5Ws and 1H. You’re not a news reporter but a creative/fiction writer, so turn these questions into fictional but almost real human characters and emotions. Imagination and reality, though seldom combining in real life, produce a striking beauty in fiction. See how the late American journalist Meyer Berger, hailed as “one of the finest newspaper

Future of the Middle East - United Pan-Arab States by Sam A. Cohen Sam A. Cohen takes an exhaustive study of the politics, recent and current events in the Middle East to come this conclusion: The region’s multiple crises are teaching both the Arabs and Jews that they must strive to live together. For the Arabs, their common language, religion, history, and culture are forcing them towards democracy, more unity, less conflict and greater cohesion. For Israel, it is proving impossible to survive as an Island in a turbulent sea of Arabs and Moslems. The time has come for all to start looking in the same direction and coalesce under the same banner.

Tolerance of Uncertainty by John Bancroft Uncertainty is a universal constant. We live with it every day. Tolerance of Uncertainty is John Bancroft’s synthesis of his quest to understand and deal with uncertainty. He explores how scientists have tolerated uncertainty and proceeds to consider uncertainty in relation to our morals. By the end of the book, he makes the clear distinction between the unknowable and the uncertain. He then proposes models of reality that we could use, assessing the extent that they have been helpful and modifying them as necessary. This book is of fundamental importance to us all. Certainty is often problematic. Caution is advised.

The annual Miami Book Fair in Florida attracted thousands of bibliophiles and readers.

Author Solutions Joins Miami Book Fair International 2014 Author Solutions LLC graced the Miami Book Fair International last November 21-23, 2014 with its presence at the campus of Miami Dade College in Miami, Florida. Considered to be one of the largest and most awaited book festivals in the United States, hundreds of thousands of bibliophiles and potential readers of all ages flocked the venue in pursuit of their next literary purchase. With Author Solutions’ present at the event, it gives self-published authors that much needed support as well as an excellent opportunity to showcase their works. During the festival, our authors had a chance to get up close and personal with attendees during the book signing in their respective booths. To make the moment even more memorable, lucky participants were able to receive free signed copies from the author. Aside from the book signings, titles with a vast range of genres from Author Solutions’ imprints and partner imprints were displayed in a gallery for all to see.

Book lovers at the Miami Book Fair received free signed copies from authors.
