A Catalyst for Change: Award-Winning Author Alex Sangha Alex Sangha is a Vancouver-based, award-winning social worker and human-rights activist who has advocated for marginalized people, including those with mental illness, South Asian immigrants, gays, and lesbians.
His book, Catalyst, was a finalist at the 2014 Next Generation Independent Book Awards (the largest not-for-profit awards program for independent publishers). Sangha tells us that he is “always interested in meeting new people, developing new friendships and relationships, and learning new things. Anyone can help bring about social change and make a difference in someone’s life; all it takes is effort.” I was born in England, raised in Canada, and am of Indian descent. It is therefore no surprise that I feel like a product of the British Empire. I completed a bachelor of social work at the University of British Columbia, a master’s in public administration and public policy from the London School of Economics, as well as a master of social work from Dalhousie University. I’m the driving force behind the Dignity House project, which aims to provide affordable housing for vulnerable seniors in Vancouver.

Prolific Writer Tells Why Artistic Expression Is Important Artists have a special form of self-expression that transcends spoken words. Whether it’s a pleasant or tragic experience, artists can transform it into their own handiwork that may be outright beautiful or quaint. They can recreate seemingly ordinary things into something worth a second look.
The modern media revolution has been a strange and distant echo to me. When I became a Goodreads author, they suggested I might want to write an author blog; so far I have not done it.
“ My purpose in writing is to use selfexpression freely to unburden my soul, to allow the flow of artistic impulses that all of humanity is born with to flourish. ” Years ago, before my father passed away, he was invited by a national association for senior citizens to speak at their national convention, to be held where he lived in San Francisco. His answer to them was “no.” They wanted him to talk about how his painting and poetry writing filled his life in his late eighties. His answer to them was, “I just paint and write, but I don’t talk about it.” He wrote hundreds of amazing poems in his eighties and painted many, many pictures. It was his art that sustained him. My father was a humble man with a great and gentle soul.

In the year 2012, I had been writing for years and had accumulated many manuscripts. Mostly, I wrote for children, having published children’s books in 1968 and 1970: The Tuesday Elephant, illustrated by Tom Feelings and published by T. Y. Crowell & Sons, and The Dancing Monkey, illustrated by Rocco Negri and published by G. P. Putnam & Sons. The books were well received and sold to schools and libraries across the United States. Tom Feelings went on to win the Newbery Award for his next book with Julius Lester, To Be a Slave. He published many successful picture books, and so did Rocco Negri.
Literary Journey
At this time, my publisher recommended me for a scholarship to the Bread Loaf Writers Conference. I could not leave my children for several weeks, and so I had to decline the offer. It would have been a remarkable experience, but it was not to be. After these picture books were published, I got a full-time job directing the Girl Scout Handbooks called “Worlds to Explore” and then the Girl Scouts’ career-education program called “From Dreams to Reality,” funded by the U.S. Department of Education. THE A LIST | ADITYA SHAKALYA
Raw Realism Partridge India author Aditya Shakalya gives a forthright account of his book, Wicked Pursuits, and its penetrating insights into current social phenomena. The book was launched in December at a ceremony in Indore, India. The book Wicked Pursuits is a work of noir crime fiction, bereft of a hero. The protagonists introduced and developed throughout the book have their weaknesses and problems, just like in real life; all of them are unlikeable at times, and there is no clear, absolute hero who saves the day in the end. The story is woven around two boys who are pretty mediocre (but not outright basket cases), with no exceptional skill set or talent to speak of. In a country like India, which is growing at two extremes—with one end comprising the nouveau riche and the other the poorest of the poor, who find it very hard to keep up with the inflation and modern demands in the job market—it is the middle class that is stuck between the taste and expenses of the elite, and with income only slightly better than that of the underprivileged. Dreaming the dream shared by the rich, the boys decide to walk the path of easy money and fame by siding with all that is gray and morally dubious.
“ Don’t follow stereotypes. Travel, read, write, work, and enjoy what you do. ” For a while, I was looking for a theme that could be used to create an engaging novel that people could relate to. Frequent mentions of crime in the newspapers—murders, kidnappings, and rapes committed by young men—made me think of their back stories. What is it that compels these kids from normal, hard-working, middle-class backgrounds to take this route? With this thought in mind, the plot of the book was laid.

It took me a year to complete the book; I wanted the story to be fast, with ambiguous characters and complex timeframes, without confusing the reader too much (but keeping it moderately challenging). The book is not for those who enjoy breezy, feelgood, happily-ever-after kind of literature or movies. It questions the current prioritization of money over minds and involvement of politics and greed in misguiding the modern workforce toward the path of self-destruction. Constant interaction with readers and pulling off a very successful book launch (never done at such a scale in the city)—where over one hundred copies were sold—made the entire publishing experience memorable. Feedback from those who completed the book and their willingness to recommend it to friends and family was encouraging and heartening. Dealing with Partridge India was smooth, and the response was professional and timely. The process, from signing up to final delivery of the books, was completed without any glitches or problems. Your worth as a writer begins building up from your first public work, so think it through before submitting the final manuscript. Whatever you write, produce a high-quality piece, something that you aren’t ashamed of later (even if the book doesn’t do well). Don’t follow stereotypes. Travel, read, write, work, and enjoy what you do.

THE A LIST | SUNNY MAKAR
Vision Quest Sunny Makar has recently published his first book, Chasing My Vision—Bollywood Dreams, through Partridge India. The book is based on his exciting experience with trying to becoming an actor in Bollywood, the Indian movie industry. Chasing My Vision—Bollywood Dreams is a novel inspired by a true story, but it is not only based on Bollywood. The main theme of the book is about chasing your dreams, chasing your vision, and chasing it till the time you achieve those visions. It is about passion, hard work, struggle, and perseverance. I am an Australia-based Indian writer and also an actor. I travelled to Australia for higher studies, where I faced financial hardship from a very young age. My love for acting took me to Mumbai to become an actor in Bollywood, and my life struggles and experiences led to writing this book.
I’d never ever thought that I could actually write. The thought of writing a novel had never crossed my mind, but when I was in Mumbai, I’d observed a lot of things that people in general would go through when they were trying their luck in Bollywood. Also, I’d tried to understand what a human mind goes through when it is continuously running after something, in order to get that internal satisfaction. I wanted to do something about it, and somehow everything came out in the form of writing for me. The whole process took me roughly close to a year from start to finish. “My book is about dreams and converting those dreams into reality.” After reading Chasing My Vision, every reader should feel that no matter what happens, they will keep on chasing their vision till the time they achieve it. My book is about dreams and converting those dreams into reality. So, if somehow my readers can feel that after reading this novel, then I’d feel content from inside. I loved the whole process of writing and publishing. To my own surprise, I love writing now. I love being creative. Whilst writing, I’d realised that my imagination would go beyond my own imagination level. It’s not like a nine-tofive job where you’re bound to do only certain things and stick within those boundaries. I’d never thought that my book could actually get this much of an audience this early and there has been a lot of support from Partridge Publishing itself. I’m enjoying my experience with them as well.

THE A LIST | SMITA KALE
Overseas Ventures Smita Kale’s What a Paradise! examines the lives of six fictional characters who have left India to pursue a better life abroad. The book tackles the different perceptions of “paradise” and also social themes such as the class divide that is prevalent in India and elsewhere. What a Paradise! is a narrative with multiple characters and no leading protagonist. It portrays the dilemma of Indians overseas struggling to adapt to an unfamiliar lifestyle in the “paradise” they have toiled to attain, while severing old bonds with their motherland. The book also touches upon a diverse range of issues that ail Indian society, from economic and moral corruption to the class divide and meaningless symbols of opulence that people flaunt like badges of distinction.
“ I believe that there is a great story in each of us. It is only a question of whether or not we wish to share. ” The challenges of adapting to new lands and subsequent triumphs of nonresident Indians in various parts of the world emerge through each character’s individual experience. The immigrant quest for the elusive “paradise” is paralleled by the day-to-day fight for survival that Indians in India face each day. There is no clear answer to the question, “Which is the true paradise?” Set against the vibrant backdrop of an elaborate Delhi wedding, their stories unravel alongside incidents of illicit gun-running, bomb blasts, and a hit-and-run. Two college friends meet by chance after many years on a long-haul flight as they head to India for the wedding of a mutual friend. The narrative moves briskly as they catch each other up. Each has a chilling story of escape and new beginnings to share. WHAT A PA R A DI SE ! The characters grapple with issues of identity in reinventing themselves in foreign lands, but the influence from their roots in India prevails, and the lines of demarcation seem to blur after a point. The readers witness an evolution of the characters as they tackle life’s challenges. While it is set mainly in New Delhi, India, with each character’s story, it correspondingly relocates to Sydney, London, California, and other parts of the United States. The stories evolved from my personal experiences while living in different parts of the world. I traveled across the world extensively for over fifteen years as the wife of a captain in the merchant marine. What a Paradise! came to fruition over a decade, after it was conceived by me as a fresh immigrant. I experienced firsthand the frustration, disconnection, apprehension, and hurting from separation and also the euphoria upon tasting success. It is my belief that the distance across oceans and continents offered a didactic perspective, leading me to subconsciously draw parallels between India and the countries I lived in. I believe that there is a great story in each of us. It is only a question of whether or not we wish to share. The book is meant to entertain with a purpose. Through each dramatic story, I wish to send a message that adaptability determines one’s success or failure, whether we choose to relocate or remain in our own country. Self-publishing affords a great deal of freedom, and publishing with Partridge India was a dream, given the guidance and support I received.

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS
As a self-published author, a lot of the editing responsibility falls on you too. Of course, having a second set of eyes review your work is almost always the best option, but there’s a lot you can do to fine-tune your manuscript before anyone else sees it.
Today we present ten of the most common editing errors—things to look out for when you’re reviewing that first draft. >>
>>
scrollable text
1. Misspellings Everyone has committed this one, and the solution is simple enough. Use your word processor’s spell-checker (as an aid, not necessarily as the only method) and check your dictionary when in doubt. 2. Incorrect pronoun case Is your pronoun being used as a subject, object, or possessive in your sentence? Make sure you choose the pronoun—I, me, or mine, for example—to match. 3. Unnecessary commas Commas are typically used to separate clauses in sentences, as well as items in lists. Don’t insert one just because the sentence is becoming a little long. 4. Missing commas The opposite problem is not using commas when they’re necessary (e.g., when listing items, separating sentence clauses, or when signaling nonrestrictive or nonessential material). For example: My older brother, a sophomore, still hasn’t decided on a major yet. In this sentence, the commas separate the nonessential “a sophomore” because, while providing information, it isn’t necessary to make the sentence complete or grammatically correct. 5. Comma splices The third part of our “Comma Trilogy,” a comma splice occurs when you use commas to join independent clauses. Separate them with a period or semicolon

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS
Understand Readers and Write Better You may have already read countless tips on flexing your writing muscles. This time, we add a cognitive and linguistic touch. We worm our way into the human brain to uncover what writing approach hits the nail right on the head for most readers.
Crawl inside the mind of your reader, so you can explore its entirety, every nook and cranny, and find the sweet spot to hit with your words. Steven Pinker, a leading and bestselling psychologist and linguist hailed as one of the “top 100 most eminent psychologists of the modern era,” wrote The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person’s Guide to Writing in the 21st Century. His latest book is considered the modern-day Elements of Style, far from pedantic, with illustrations and comic strips that find constructive humor in common writing boo-boos. A recent review of Pinker’s book enumerates what today’s writers should learn in order to become better at their craft. >>

1. Show your readers what you want to say Why should you show and not simply tell? Pinker says that humans are visual beings. As primates, a third of our brain responds to visuals and a large fraction to tactile and hearing signals, as well as movement and space. He further explains: For us to go from “I think I understand” to “I understand,” we need to see the sights and feel the motions. Many experiments have shown that readers understand and remember material far better when it is expressed in concrete language that allows them to form visual images … 2. Stop trying to sound smart A know-it-all ends up being a laughing stock. The same goes in writing—a writer who tries to impress ends up looking stupid. You’re not writing to impress but to be understood, so write in a language that most people will understand. Steven says: Classic writing with this assumption of equality between a writer and reader makes the reader feel like a genius. Bad writing makes the reader feel like a dunce. … imagine that you are in a conversation with a reader who is as competent as you are, but happens not to know some things that you know. And you orient the reader so that they can see something in the world with their own eyes that you have noticed, but they have not yet noticed … A symmetry between reader and writer. A conversational, informal style. A determination to be visual and concrete. An excitement about showing the reader something in the world that the reader can see for themselves, rather than concentrating on the activity of the people who have studied that thing.

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS
How to Create a Good “Hook” Creating a good hook is not easy, but it is so essential that it is worth almost any amount of time and energy. The hook is third, after the front cover and the back cover blurb, in the sequence of what makes readers want to buy your book. When a reader looks at your first paragraph, it is a pivotal opportunity to generate a sale.
While not every first line can be totally engaging, the first paragraph has to have something in it that elevates interest. The first page needs to make one want to turn to the second. While there is no perfect formula, there are certainly some patterns that have emerged as to what constitutes an effective beginning of a book. Start off simple and strong. A long opening sentence feels unwelcome to most modern readers. Keep in mind that most of these individuals are browsing in a bookstore or online and want something that feels direct and unique.
Avoid an overabundance of details. Similar to point one, don’t overload the reader with descriptive information such as names, times, dates, and locations. Two of these in the first sentence will be enough. Then introduce the rest gradually.
Introduce a character. Too many lines about a setting or time period will not engage the reader as strongly as a flesh-and-blood person. Novels live through characters, not through settings.
Live on the edge. Further to the above, novels are about taking conflict and encapsulating it into short situations. Each chapter provides an opportunity for cliffhangers and “edgy” scenes, making your readers eager for more.
Establish conflict as early as you can. Conflict gives an adrenaline rush to a reader’s curiosity. Any sudden incident or unusual situation can help hook a reader.

“Born in August of 1950, a talking and reasoning toy elephant made from a leatherette baby mattress writes a novel over forty-five years later about the discovery of life. Nathan Emmanuel né Christ remembers belonging to a beautiful young child named Emma Louise, but that’s foggy in comparison to the thirty years he spent in a dusty attic with books as his only companion. Nathan ends up in a New York City flea market in August of 1995 with only one button eye. Luckily for them both, Nathan is discovered by theater instructor and director Morgan Johansson. It takes just one moment’s touch for the two to connect, and Nathan is reborn. He then goes on to prompt and cajole Morgan into truly living life, weaseling them into different adventures that eventually lead to Morgan helping a fledgling theater company with its upcoming production.”

This is the stated intent, but I think, more than that, it shows the maturation of a writer.”

Massive Liftoff for Aditya Shakalya’s Wicked Pursuits On December 15, Aditya Shakalya’s Wicked Pursuits was formally launched in the Indian city of Indore, at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Presiding over the launch was Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia, member of parliament and former minister of state for power.
Wicked Pursuits was described by its author as “noir crime fiction,” and as a novel decidedly “bereft of a hero.” It examines the pursuit of wealth amidst the current climate of inadequate education and unscrupulous politics, fused with the timeless theme of the human desire for gain. “By just flipping through a few pages, I could make out that the book indeed will stand out in its genre. Also the creativity in the plot is visible as it continues to push its readers on the very edge of it,” said Scindia. Shakalya himself stated, “The newspapers and the media around me inspired me to write this piece. It explores the human psyche and tries to answer the individual’s take on things.” Also in attendance were academician and veteran researcher Mr. Shankarlal Garg, Congress leader Mr. Tulsi Silawat, visionary and educationist Mr. Swapnil Gothari, and active MPCA member Mr. Raju Chauhan. At the event, copies of Wicked Pursuits were sold and signed by Shakalya, and a portion of the sales was given away to Aware, a charity organization that focuses on stray animals. An auction was held for a painting inspired by the book cover, with the proceeds also given to Aware.
