THE A LIST | RAJ PANDYA
A Cross-Cultural Journey Partridge India author Raj Pandya talks about his life story in Chronicles of a Reluctant Immigrant, a “creative nonfiction” tale where he goes from India to Canada to Australia and various parts of the world in pursuit of professional and personal gratification.
“ It is a commentary about the history and culture of the people and places that the protagonist encounters over the journey and the times he lives through. ” This autobiographical journey is a multidimensioned narrative encompassing a number of distinct though interwoven themes. It is a coming-of-age story of a boy (Raj) from an obscure small town in India, born and raised in an orthodox Hindu family. It is a love story that spans distant continents and different cultures. It is a story of a mixed-race and cross-cultural marriage played out in the East and the West. It is a commentary about the history and culture of the people and places that the protagonist encounters over the journey and the times he lives through. Finally, it is the story of a well-educated man who is frustrated and disheartened because he is unable to find professional fulfillment in his country of birth and reluctantly looks to the West for better opportunities, where he finally immigrates and succeeds in salvaging his moribund professional career and earns the recognition he deserves.

The narrative opens when the author arrives in Canada at the age of twenty-nine to pursue graduate studies at the University of Toronto. During this visit, he falls in love with a Canadian girl, Margaret, who grew up on a family farm in Ontario. This event turns out to be an inflection point in his life, which challenges his past and alters his future in unexpected and unprecedented ways. The rest of the narrative is the story of his journey, leading up to this critical event and what follows after it in a cross-cultural context. After their marriage in India, they lived for extended periods in the city of Jabalpur in India, and their two children had full immersion in the Indian culture and way of life. However, when they permanently moved to Canada in 1974, the children were only nine and four years old. In the absence of any meaningful and sustained contact with India or the Indian community in Canada, they grew up within the Canadian culture. Any memories they have of their childhood in India are at best vague and only sporadic. Their spouses are Caucasian and their children, of course, have little idea of their mixed ancestry. The book therefore evolved from the author’s desire to leave a written record of his life’s journey prior to and after meeting Margaret, so that their progeny could <<

THE A LIST | AJIT CHAK
Kicking Up a Storm Ajit Chak’s Kashmir Storm has already generated controversy and several newspaper articles. The book tackles topics such as the commercial sex trade and organized crime, all against the backdrop of the exotic region of Kashmir.
Kashmir Storm is a work of pure fiction. It is based on the premise that since prostitution is legal in Kashmir, it will encourage the sex trade in the state, as its economy has been devastated. The book, based in the future in 2016, talks about the Mafia dons establishing a racket in running girls and human organs trade, which extends from Kashmir to Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh.
“ Every book should have three elements: a drama, a message and a solution. ” Into this scene comes a muscle bender from Delhi with the name of a hero from the Mahabharata. He meets a girl from the Hunza Valley in Pakistan who has escaped from there and now lives in Srinagar, and with her cracks a major organsmuggling racket. A high-profile doctor from Bahraich is arrested by a team of the Punjab Police specially recruited for this purpose, led by a hardcore anti-terrorist expert called Sudhir Singh Saini. Aiding them in their plans is a Muslim leader from Lucknow called Nehaluddin Khan, who is
close to several politicians in the state. The book has Nehaluddin commenting that it was a leader from the south who drove a wedge between Rajiv Gandhi and his relatives and compromised his security, leading to his eventual murder in southern India. It talks of the drugs and flesh trade racket in Uttar Pradesh and the cross-border smuggling with Nepal; also, of how the state of Uttar Pradesh has seen the collapse of law and order and policing and has become the badlands of India. In a scenario rampant with gun runners, flesh trade, and drug smugglers comes a Kashmir Storm which runs into 325 pages of nonstop action. It’s an excellent script for a Salman Khan or Hrithik Roshan type of movie for Hindi Movie Cinema. The lead role could be played by Sunny Leone or Mandy Thakkar. The choice would be of the film producer. I believe that every book should have three elements: A drama, a message, and a solution. I was inspired to write Kashmir Storm by the devastation in Kashmir. It took me one month to write the book, and I wrote around four thousand words a day. The total word count is around 80,000 words. The book, however, is a flight of imagination and a work of pure fiction.

Escriben solas y dan a luz unidas.

One of the most daunting aspects of writing a novel is the sheer amount of words required. For most people, the most they’ve ever written has been their final research paper at university, and they realize after around twenty thousand words that writing a novel is more challenging than they expected. On the flip side, there are those who have such a ready flow of words that they go well beyond a normal novel length and later have to cut it down. Here, we give you some useful facts about word counts of famous novels and guidance as to what word count may suit you best. Some background information on word counts: Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time ranks as the longest novel, with 1.2 million words. (It is seven volumes long.) For single-volume novels, the longest—no surprise here—is Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, with a word count of 587,000. Novels from the nineteenth century, in which the reading public increased in percentage, were generally high in word counts, with George Eliot’s Middlemarch containing 316,000 and Dickens consistently breaking 150,000 and 200,000 words with his novels.
Doing the Numbers In our time, most novels are around 80,000 to 110,000 words. Traditional publishers tend to balk at books that are shorter than 80,000, though this is not a problem for self-publishers! Novels from the sci-fi and fantasy genres tend to have higher word counts than other types of fiction. Novels under seventy thousand words are generally called “novellas,” especially those between forty and sixty thousand. A fair number of the classics in British and American literature belong to this category. Some famous titles include Animal Farm (just under thirty thousand), Dr. Jekyll <<

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

A book-signing event needs careful planning to be a success. While you can simply arrive and sit at a table, we suggest some steps that will help you sell more books and find new readers. Find out what the location will do or supply for you. Don’t assume that the location of your signing will take care of marketing, promotions, etc., especially if the venue is not a bookstore. You might be responsible for producing advertising posters, for example. Make sure you ask the right questions; aside from providing a table and chair, your location might expect you to handle everything. Help with getting the word out. Even if your signing location is going to manage most aspects of the marketing, give them a hand. Make sure you get the word out via your social media accounts, your workplace bulletin board, and any other appropriate places for an advertisement. Consider local newspaper space, if you can do it economically and within your marketing budget. And don’t be afraid to ask if the paper might be willing to do a feature on you.
Bring the right supplies. Make sure you pack a couple of permanent pens as well as a notebook in which customers can spell out their names before you sign their book. It also helps to have a sign-up sheet for your mailing list (if you have one). Stay in touch with the venue. Especially if you’re coming into town from another location, stay in frequent contact with the signing location. Don’t just show up five minutes before the signing is scheduled to start. As the date approaches, contact them a week before, a day before, and even the day of the event to make sure everything is proceeding smoothly. This reassures the people at the location too, as they don’t have to wonder if you are going to show up.
WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS
If you’re one of those lucky individuals skilled with both a keyboard and a chef’s knife, you’ve probably considered writing a cookbook at one time or another. Well, “consider” it no longer… it’s time to get started! Self-publishing is a great way to share your culinary ideas with kitchens around the world. We offer five suggestions for actually writing the book—some nuts-and-bolts tips to help make it enjoyable and usable for readers. 1. Give credit where it’s due. If your recipes were inspired by someone else’s, just make sure to quote the source. Use these types of recipes sparingly, though; if your entire cookbook is nothing but slight variants of other people’s ideas, readers will wonder why you wrote it in the first place. Make sure you’re bringing something new to the table (literally and figuratively). 2. Show me! Photographs (preferably color) are a must in cookbooks. Not only do the pictures help sell the book, they also provide a visual reference for the reader. (“So that’s how it should look!”) Professional food photography can be very expensive, though; if you’re self-publishing, try to find someone who can take quality pictures at a price you can afford. 3. Be consistent with servings and portions. Generally, it’s best to list ingredients to serve from 4 to 6 people (unless the subject of your book is single-serving meals, for example). If the serving size varies from recipe to recipe, the reader might become confused. 4. Likewise, use consistent preparation terms. If you use “minced” in one recipe, don’t switch to “finely minced” in the next. Don’t call it a “baking sheet” in one place and then a “cookie sheet” a few pages later. Even if you say it only slightly differently, the reader might assume there’s a preparation difference too. 5. Put your draft through a test run. Have a friend who isn’t familiar with your recipes try them, using your instructions. Is he or she able to prepare the meals successfully? Take note of places where your test cook becomes confused or needs additional information. Remember, you won’t be around to answer questions for the majority of readers! Also, choose a person whose skill level matches that of your book’s target audience. If it’s aimed at kitchen amateurs, don’t ask a professional chef to prepare the meals.

Ten Marketing Mistakes You’re Making
Authors can be an introverted bunch at times. While this won’t necessarily hurt your writing, it can be a hindrance when it comes time to market your book. Today, we present ten things you might not be doing—but should! >>
>>
scrollable text
1. Not updating your website We’re not talking about adding new content (although you should certainly be doing that!). You should consider occasionally changing your site’s design, theme, and/or color scheme, so that readers know instantly that your site is active. 2. Not giving away free copies of your book Don’t just give away copies to a select group of readers. Keep local libraries, hospitals, hotels—any place where people might find themselves waiting—in mind too. It allows you to give to your community while finding new readers. 3. Not contacting your local radio station Check local radio stations, especially ones that have programs that feature authors. Even if you only get a few minutes of airtime, those minutes could potentially introduce you to thousands of people in your town. 4. Not guest blogging If you’re a regular reader of a blog, find out if you might be able to contribute a post (and, if you have your own blog, invite other writers to contribute to yours). Make sure your material is useful, though, not just a plug for your book. 5. Not attending conventions Whatever genre you write in, there are probably associated groups and conventions for writers and fans. If costs permit, make sure you attend at least some of them. It provides you with an opportunity to meet readers outside your local area.

Double Penetration: The Life And Times Of Roland Granderson by Gregory Johnson “Double Penetration” is the first in a series of books detailing “G” as a person as well as an arms dealer. Entwined with G’s peril is a glimpse of stylish living that will engage the have-nots and relate to the well-offs, as opposed to his dismal childhood and upbringing that will do just the opposite. Also, G’s appreciation for the pleasuring of beautiful women is 1st class, making this novel just as raunchy as it is thought provoking. “Double Penetration” will captivate any audience whose intrigue can be found in sexual arousal, suspense, and that brand of closure that only revenge can purchase.

Launched in Pune, Hummings of the Heart by Reshma Wable Partridge India author Reshma Wable launched her book of 75 poems, Hummings of the Heart, in Pune on 25 January. Presiding over the launch were Randhir Khare, a famous poet, teacher, artist, and folkorist, as well as Brigadier Pitre (AVSM), a 93-year-old retired Indian Army officer. Reshma’s book and launch have also attracted press attention, with various periodicals such as the Sakal Times being on the scene for the presentation. Hummings of the Heart has been acclaimed as a work of great pensiveness and reflection, and is the first book of English poetry by the 28-year-old Wable. Published by Partridge India, Hummings of the Heart has 75 poems divided into different sections, namely childhood, me, nature, life, relations, and society, with the last called “You and Me”. Wable stated that “Experimenting with words is something I love to do. I always keep jotting down my thoughts and feelings that come to my mind, even while I am pursuing some kind of activity or travelling or trekking. My book is a compilation of those thoughts.” A software engineer by profession, Wable is an avid cyclist, having ridden on the terrains of the mighty Himalayas and the lovely Kanyakumari.
She treks, travels, plays violin and expresses different aspects of life in her own poetic way. When asked, “What is the best thing about being a poet?” Wable replied, “The best thing is that you are free. You can play with words, engage the readers and always be curious. And let’s not forget the soothing touch of rhymes!”
Reshma Wable with acclaimed writer and intellectual Randhir Khare, during the launch of her book, Hummings of the Heart
That said, consolidating the collection of poems into book form was no easy task. “To make every page appealing was tough. Also, I would like to add that it would not have been possible to bring out the book without the help of my family and friends. They have been extremely supportive,” said Wable, adding a word of advice for budding poets: “Don’t write to be judged; feel free to put your mind on paper.” Wable’s lucid words will open different optimistic ways to look at Life -- simple yet thought-provoking – while her poems will take you to places you have never been but to which you’ve always wanted to go.
