Jean on Her Search for Meaning

“I learned how important it is for us to use our collective skills, talents, and knowledge to make a better world.”

I am a transformational author with a desire to join the community of writers to inspire conscious living. I served twentyeight years in higher education as professor and department chair in the field of rehabilitation counseling. Even though I was an avid reader and studied literature on many topics related to my field, I have always been a critical thinker with an ongoing search for deeper meaning… Even though I published in academic journals, I had a burning desire to contribute my creative skills on a more profound level. A series of existential questions led me on my own spiritual path in search of my true purpose. I studied a variety of philosophies and spiritual principles and practices in search of a more meaningful and fulfilling life. I followed society’s linear path for success, but I always felt that something was missing. Disillusioned with society’s expectations, personal life challenges, and a desire to express my gifts and talents to the world, I accepted an invitation for an assignment abroad. My primary assignment was to serve as a main writer capturing universitycommunity-industry engagement activities to improve, sustain, and transform the community. I traveled extensively with the faculty and staff to remote villages and indigenous communities,

Writing Through Tragedy “ I was enraged, devastated, and moved with every turn of the page. ” “ Quite simply, Hannah has changed my life. Thank you. ”

I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist and addiction expert. I’ve been a featured mental-health expert on television, and I continue to contribute regularly on local and national radio. These are just a small sample of reader reactions to Hannah Was Here: D.R.E.S.S. An Alarm that Must Be Heard by author Nancy Szakacsy, MS, LMFT. The book recounts the untimely death of Nancy’s daughter due to DRESS (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms).

Nancy, please tell us about your book.

Hannah Was Here is a true, horrific family love story. On April 19, 2011, my daughter Hannah’s heart failed while she was sitting in a doctor’s office [after an extreme adverse reaction to a widely prescribed antibiotic acne drug called Minocycline.] She was flown by medi-copter to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. When she arrived at Cedars, she had no heartbeat or pulse—it had ceased upon entering the helicopter. Hannah eventually had fasciotomies, two open-heart surgeries, and the loss of all her major organs. She had a BiVAD artificial heart implanted and later removed due to her own heart’s striving for life. She endured hundreds of X-rays, scans, severe starvation, and lost her colon and part of her pancreas. Hannah was in and out of consciousness until she died 102 days later, two weeks after her seventeenth birthday. I hope Hannah Was Here makes you feel everything and wonder if you could have lived it. You certainly could be asked to. These haunting events didn’t have to happen. That is what makes it so hard.

Wildlife Advocate Becomes an Angel to Endangered Orangutans

Xlibris author Sheena James aids in biodiversity preservation through her sci-fi tale Angels that Came about saving the orangutans. Promoting Animal Conservation through Her Xlibris Book

My name is Sheena James, and I’m a proud author of the science-fiction book called Angels that Came that takes place in the Kinabatangan, a protected rainforest inhabited by many species of animals. The story follows the life of Jessie Jane, a researcher who happens to work on animal conservation and other fields of science. It also narrates the tale of an Indonesian boy by the name of Agung who owns a banana plantation back home, as he relates his job to the conservation of orangutans.

>>

James earned her conservation biology degree with second upper-class honors in Cardiff, Wales, UK, and later pursued a master’s degree in the same study. She was also a full scholar of the Darwin Initiative, a UK government grant fund assisting developing countries in their biodiversity preservation projects. Her education landed her a career in Habitat for Humanity in 2010, allowed her to research about the endangered orangutans, and led her to conduct more studies about wildlife conservation.

Combining her professional studies with humanitarian intentions, Xlibris author Sheena James pens a sci-fi tale that supports wildlife conservation in her book Angels that Came. Sheena has chosen Xlibris’s supported selfpublishing services to share her story and advance her cause.

Jessie Jane manages to produce some mathematical formulae, which is novel in all pursuit and is new in the science world. The story is infused with romance, which she finds with the help of friends. The highlights of this story are telemetry, some spicy romance, and her friends. Angels that Came confronts everyday socioeconomic issues. Jessie Jane lobbies the use of palm oil in orangutan conservation. Not only does this book tell a story of people whom she worked with as a scientist, but it also emulates the importance of research. One of the findings includes a formula that may lead to the use of science and mathematics in animal conservation. Readers will also get to imagine living in the tropics and in the rich forest of Borneo, as well as gain insights about many basic mathematical formulae. These include Bayesian Method, Tangent Theorem, Binomial, Polynomial, Fisher, Rounding Up (the Table Maker Problem), Black Hole, Quatronics, and the Vacuum Tube (Fleming), Doppler Effect, String Theory, Azimuth, Matrix Parsimony, and the Mantel Test. Reading this will make readers feel like a scientist.. Get my book through MPH, Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com, Xlibris, etc. As an author, I have written a lot of notes and blogs to better reach my audience. Keep in touch by following me on Twitter:

THE A LIST | RACHNA GUPTA

The Colors of Life Writing is something that has always interested me. While teaching English, I always encouraged the children to be creative and express their feelings through different mediums like writing, art, and drama. There is nothing more magical than using words to create something new! I love reading and have read books by various authors, with Paulo Coelho and Robin Cook being my favorites. Growing up, I loved reading poems by William Wordsworth and Robert Frost. While doing so, I imagined myself walking through the woods, sitting by the brook, and looking at the daffodils. So real and well-written are the poems!

“ There is nothing more magical than using words to create something new! “ Myriad Hues, as the name suggests, is about the colors of life. The book is made up of twenty-eight poems that talk about poverty, regret, nature, innocence, introspection, rape, and God. While I was teaching grade-four students last year, I realized that reading and writing revealed a whole new world to them and helped them express themselves better. I came home one day and decided to cultivate that hobby again. Yes, writing helped me relax. After that, I spent an hour each day penning down a few lines. When I had completed about fifteen poems, I realized that I was now ready to accept praise and criticism well, and that is when I decided to go ahead and publish the book. It took me about six months to finish the twenty-eight poems.

None of us think alike, and that is why each one of us is unique! My poems express what I feel; some poems might touch a chord in your heart, while a few would just not make sense. (It’s okay to feel like that!) Poetry, I feel, needs to be felt—it needs to be imagined, and it needs to be savored. I am working on my second book of poems and prose. Unlike the first, this one is based on love and separation and the euphoria, anguish, and pain connected with it. Unlike fiction, poetry is still something people need to get used to. One problem with selfpublishing is that you are left to market the book yourself. This is tough if you are a first-time writer with no experience of the publishing world. Well, you learn the ropes as you go along! The team at Partridge India has been supportive and tried their best to see that my book reached the right audience. Good work! The only way to improve your style is to read extensively and either adopt a style that suits you or create your own. Do not worry too much of what the end result will be; what matters is whether you put your heart into your work and enjoy the experience!

The Coming-of-Age Experience I have only two people who at first influenced my writing style, which later developed into something of my own. The two authors were Mr. Amish Tripathi, author of the Shiva Trilogy, and the late Mr. “Kalki” R. Krishnamurthy, author of the legendary Tamil novel, Ponniyin Selvan. The genre was influenced by my own life.

“My own adventurous teenage life inspired me in writing the book.“ Fool’s Paradise: It’s Teenage is a young-adult fiction tale that revolves around the fresh teenage life of a boy named Surya, who experiences life’s adventurous episodes as he enters adulthood. The story travels in Surya’s experiences in love, sports, studies, and family relationships in learning life and achieving success. My own adventurous teenage life inspired me in writing the book. Though my life inspired the work, it is fiction and is not based on my true story. It took fourteen months in total, but to count only the days which I spent on writing, it took seven to eight months in finishing the book.

I’m working on a motion picture trailer for the book for marketing it. After submitting the manuscript, the quick response at all parts of the process is the most impressive part in publishing with Partridge India. Personally, the website design was really my favorite. You guys at Partridge India are simply amazing. I’m really happy that I found you people.

If we acquire failure in life at all areas in which we approach it, this just means that those areas are not meant for us, and not that we’re a complete failure in life.

I advise aspiring authors to think about the following: If reading a book gives an experience of a whole new world, writing it would give the experience of creating that whole new world. If you’re an author, all you have to do is start your story, and the story itself would ride you to it. Enjoy the experience!

A Question of Religion On Its Own is a work of fiction about the impact of religions on humanity. It questions whether the religions of the world have been a boon or a bane to our society. It deals with a disgruntled group that engages in terrorist activities to trigger a world war—a religious war—in which mercy and compromise would be sins.

The Tamil poet Bharathiar (Mahakavi Subrahmanya Bharathiar, 1889–1936) made such an impact on me that I decided to pursue a career in writing—which was not to be the case. Besides the stalwarts of past millennia, other Tamil writers of the twentieth century (Pudumaip Pithan, Kalki, Jeyakaandhan, Sujaatha, etc) and English—(Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, R L Stevenson, Richard Bach, and English translations of many other authors) influenced me. Biographies of great leaders have had their impacts on me too.

While I am working on a sequel to my book, book launches at four different locations/ dates between October and December this year are being planned—two in Africa and two in India. Besides the advertisements done through the publisher’s facilities, I utilize the services of my friends and relatives to spread the news through word-of-mouth and other communication channels. The favorite part of my publishing experience was when I received the final manuscript together with the cover pages from the publisher for my final acceptance/approval. A much-favored part was the process of writing itself. Converting thoughts and ideas into a written (soft or hard) document was the most exhilarating experience. When someone admires those texts, the joy knows no bounds. My experience with Partridge India has so far been quite pleasant. I enjoyed the thorough professionalism displayed throughout the entire process. Regarding advice for aspiring authors, I can only suggest what I did: Let your mind roam free, question everything; document every thought that comes to your mind. It took me almost three years to complete the book. Of that, at least a year was spent in correcting my poor English!

Personal experiences and reading about past and present real-life events around the world helped me to realize that the indifference and intolerance toward “other” religions have been the primary cause for unrest in the minds of human beings. In religious conflicts, mercy and compromise have always been considered as sins. I felt that the particular notion considering one’s religion as “the best” needed to be rooted out from the minds of human beings altogether, for humanity to go forward.

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

How to Write an Excellent Short Tale While the short story is very important as a concise way of showcasing a writer’s craft, in this digital age it also serves as an efficient marketing tool. A great short story can be shared over the Internet and attract new readers.

>>

>>

scrollable text

Length. A short story should be 4,000 words or less. In number of pages, that equates to approximately ten pages, single-spaced. This number is more of a guide than a requisite, though magazines and journals will prefer this length or shorter. Characters: • The number of characters in a short story should be kept to a minimum. Any nonessential characters should not be included. Characters who mainly serve a brief and inconsequential function should not be named. At most, there can be three main characters. • Descriptions: keep character descriptions short – one sentence will do. Saying that Bob was “six-foot-four and had strong Slavic features” will be enough. Give the audience a maximum of two characteristics, and even less for minor characters. We don’t need Dickensian descriptions of how people look and what they wear – save those for your novel! • Character development: the short story genre does not allow much room for this, and bear in mind that any development of a character will be quick. Development should only be shown in one character, while others can simply act differently. Setting. A short story should try its best to stick to one setting. This may be difficult to do, so the general rule is to stay within the same city. (An exception is science-fiction, which often treats entire planets in the way that other genres, e.g. mystery, treat a city.) Some writers have even managed to make their story take place within the same house, or even the same room! Time frame. A short story is similar to a play, in that the action should take place over a short period of time. A period of two to three weeks would be the maximum. Have a look at Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, and you will see that from start to finish, they are wrapped up in about a fortnight. Writing style. WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

How to Write Children’s Books Writing children’s books can be challenging, as we are writing for an audience much younger than ourselves and also from a different generation. At the same time, there are certain timeless qualities involved in children’s literature.

Length. Sizes of children’s books can vary, especially as the preferred font sizes for this genre are relatively large. For younger children, i.e. children under six, the word length should be kept to a maximum of 400 words. Children like to feel a sense of completion and also tend to have short attention spans. Word choice and sentences. Polysyllabic words – like the word “polysyllabic” – are difficult for children to pronounce and will ultimately weaken their confidence. Keep the general vocabulary simple and relatively common. Regarding sentences, it is advised to keep them short but not repetitious. Try not to start every sentence with your character’s

name. Additionally, bear in mind that many children’s books will not initially be read by the child, but rather read aloud by the child’s parent. Hence, there has to be a nice flow to the sentences while also keeping them basic. Decide on a level. There is a range of about ten years separating young children from young adults. Books for individuals of 13 or older are classified as Young Adult, and allow for more complexity in writing style. Positivity. The children’s book genre is not the proper arena for Nietzschean cynicism or even hard realism. Children’s literature should be uplifting. Heroes should win, the good guys should be unilaterally good, and each book should end on a positive note. Even in a series, make sure each volume ends in a cheerful way.

As today’s smart communications technology looms over face-to-face interaction, more people have been missing out on genuine conversations. A state-of-the-art communication device has yet to beat the real-time connection an in-the-flesh dialogue provides. Seemingly overlooked in this ever-expanding digital world is the importance of face-to-face marketing. While connecting with readers online is easier, book signings can leave a more memorable impact. A book-signing event is your tete-a-tete with your existing and possibly future readers as you build your brand (you and your book in this case) in a more personal fashion. It is also an opportune venue to personally express your gratitude to those who purchased your book. Here are ten pointers (not necessarily in order of importance) to make the most of your event. 1. Speak with the event coordinator or customer-relations manager of the bookstore of your choice well in advance. Communicate your plans and choices for invites and other prerequisites to make sure everything is in place before the actual event. 2. Give out tokens to your readers. They need not be expensive and can be just a simple bookmark, pen, or keychain with your author or book insignia. An attitude of gratitude to your current and future readers will not only pay dividends in sales but also in good relations. 3. This is another opportune venue to blow your own horn and think big. Display your literary portfolio, especially significant awards. Make sure to include your contact details for possible media invitations. 4. Vary your personal messages to make readers feel special when you are asked to sign a copy of your book. Make sure you correctly spell the reader’s name. A unique signature can also leave a good impression. 5. Step up your book promotions by tying up your book signing with historical and current events, holiday celebrations, pop culture, and whatever inspires your creative mind. Prepare some catchy icebreakers or engage in small talk to make your audience comfortable. 6. A friend or a relative in tow would come in handy. He or she can help you in entertaining reader questions, collecting a mailing list—the works. Just make sure he or she knows your book and your author self inside out. <<

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

Research Matters: Finding an Expert Opinion Most of the time, the Internet or local library is sufficient to answer all of our research questions. Whether it’s the capital of a country, the year a car model first rolled off the assembly line, how many bullets a particular gun holds, or who the president was in 1910, the answers are usually just a few seconds (and clicks) away. But what can you do when Wikipedia isn’t enough? Or when you have a question that isn’t answered by the available body of research? Well, it might be time for you to ask an expert. But how do you find an expert? How do you contact that person? How do you ask your question? Today, we present five tips for getting expert advice: 1. Find an expert. This one’s kind of obvious, but still deserves a quick mention. Try to find the most accessible person to you who can answer your question. Do you have a gun question? Sure, you could attempt to ask the head of the FBI’s armory, but why? An officer at your local police department could probably answer it too. Don’t forget local university professors, museum curators, business owners, etc. These people probably aren’t accustomed to being asked questions as “experts” and are more likely to start a dialogue with you. 2. Pick the appropriate time. Your state senator might be glad to answer a question for your political thriller—but does she want to answer it in a restaurant while she’s celebrating her wedding anniversary? Probably not. In situations like this, it’s better to introduce yourself, ask if you can contact her later, and be on your way. 3. Keep your questions focused and narrow. So you’ve decided that a certain bestselling author is the only person who can provide the information you need, and you send that person an e-mail (either to his website, publisher, or agent.) Keep it brief! Introduce yourself, explain the reason you’re contacting him, and ask questions that are as specific as possible. Don’t expect him to write your book for you! 4. Be grateful if you receive a reply but not upset if you don’t. Experts tend to be busy people and might not reply to your inquiry—even with the best of intentions. Messages are accidentally deleted, not passed on, or get lost under a pile of correspondence. If you receive a reply, make sure to send a quick “thank you”; if not, move on and find another person to ask. 5. Return the favor. At some point, you might be considered an expert to other upand-coming writers. If so, do your best to show the same professional courtesy to their questions as others showed to yours (or should have shown to yours.)

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS

No Limits: Brainstorming Sci-Fi Ideas Slipstream. Dying Earth. Steampunk. Space Opera. What do these have in common? As any fan of the genre can tell you, these are all types of science fiction.

But what exactly is science fiction? It’s a genre that defies easy explanation, but in very general terms, science fiction explores advances in technology and the sciences—and how these advances influence mankind. But even a definition as broad as that has exceptions. This month, we’ll look at what is the stumbling block for many aspiring sci-fi writers: coming up with ideas. After all, “Where do you get your ideas?” is probably the question most commonly asked of successful writers. Well, today we’ll tell you where a lot of those writers get their ideas—and you can too! We begin with…

Don’t just focus on hyperdrives and transporters. Science-fiction writers tend to focus on advances in technology; don’t be afraid to look at other disciplines too! What will philosophy look like in the future? Archaeology? Sociology? Music? Think about the side effects of a scientific breakthrough. Okay, so medical advancements allow people to live for centuries; how does that affect overpopulation, resource depletion, the job market, etc. Imagining the less-than-obvious consequences and side effects of progress can give you an entirely new angle to write about. Don’t shy away from the big subjects. The movie Prometheus was about no less than the creation of life on Earth. If you have an idea, don’t be scared of tackling large, “macro” topics like this. The good news is, it’s unlikely that real-world scientific advances will disprove your theory anytime soon. Find a popular sci-fi writer whose vision you don’t agree with. Hopefully, as someone who wants to write science fiction, you’re also an avid sci-fi reader! Were you intrigued by another writer’s setting or concept but disagree with the direction she took? Now’s your chance to “correct” the mistake! We’re not suggesting plagiarism; rather, we’re saying that you can use other stories to provide the seeds for your own unique take on things. What if disproved theories had turned out to be true? What if the Earth really was flat? Research beliefs and theories, some of which might be thousands of years old, and then imagine what would happen if they were true? Granted, this kind of writing can quickly cross the line from science fiction into fantasy, but who cares if it’s a story you want to tell? Now it’s your turn to show us the future through your stories!

60 in 6: Everything Your Mother Told You To Do by Dale Bondanza Hey you! Fatty! Yes, you. Your obesity is disgusting to me, to your family and friends, and most of all to yourself. I know what you’re thinking. I’ve been there, been fat (beyond fat? I was morbidly obese) and I know all the excuses. I have news for you. All your excuses are bullshit! You have the power to change your life and your lifestyle. If this fat bastard can do it, anyone can. Let me help you. Read about my journey and how you too can live a healthy lifestyle. I know you can.

About the Author My journey from obesity to a healthy lifestyle only took 9.5 months but the results will last me my lifetime. I lost 85 pounds in 9.5 months (the first 60 in 6 months) using 2 simple formulas 1) More out than in and 2) 50/50 diet/exercise. My journey is contained in these pages. Living in Naples, Florida makes my healthy lifestyle amazingly fun and enjoyable. I know more people can conquer their obsession with food and a sedentary lifestyle. You will be able to relate to some aspect of my life. You will admit, if this fatso can do it, anyone can. Now quit whining, stop eating, and start reading.

Gifted Raconteur with Autism Publishes Book, Holds Book Signing Event Tyler Davis may be different from most of us, but he possesses a special gift. Having selfpublished his debut book, The Egyptian Jackal Princess, through Xlibris, this twenty-year-old storyteller with autism may have achieved much more than most his age have. His fondness for storytelling began the moment he uttered his first word, says his father, Mike Davis. “Every night, all night long, as he walks by us over and over again for at least the last fifteen years,” Mike noted. At age two, however, Tyler was diagnosed with autism. “He started out like any normal child… it was Mama, Dada, popcorn, and then it was almost like a light switch went off,” Mike added. The now Xlibris author is blessed to have supportive parents who have provided a nurturing household and a therapist who pushed him to develop his gift. When Tyler was asked about his book, he expressed his wish for his story to be adapted into a movie and hoped that “people will enjoy it.” Tyler held his book signing on October 18, 2014 at IBEW Local 804, 1401 State Route 5 & 20, Geneva, New York City, US.

Unknown to his parents, Tyler had been writing down his stories and sending them out to publishers. “We knew he had written the book, but we didn’t know he had taken the next step,” Mike said, stressing that he and his wife always encourage their children to pursue their interests.
