Whether of fond memories or otherwise, Sylva’s words have shown how rich her imagination is. They have come out beautifully through her Xlibris self-published books, The Dolphin Princess and God Spelled Backwards: The Journey of an Actress into the World of Dog Rescue. Watch Sylva’s video
Her middle-grades book The Dolphin Princess recently won the best children’s fiction category in the 2015 Beverly Hills Book Awards. Her book God Spelled Backwards also expresses her advocacy against animal cruelty.
Good reader reviews for The Dolphin Princess This story is for young and old alike! It touched me on so many levels; a young girl experiencing the loss of her mother, her aching need for the love of her distant father, true love, and the desire to love! It stirred up so many of the joys of my childhood, part Shirley Temple, part Romeo and Juliet, with a bit of “It’s a Small World” for good measure … It’s told with such imagination and so much wisdom…I was mesmerized and enthralled. The Dolphin Princess is a fantastic journey, brilliantly written. I LOVED IT! I sure hope that these characters have a chance to come to life in an animated film. Everyone will get to meet the Animates on Animia Island. “Spoons,” a spoon who wants to spoon anyone needing comfort. “Elyphant,” the stuffed elephant, “The Domino Family,” and “Sorrowful Sad Sally,” a sad, sweet doll. And so many more.
About the author and her book The Dolphin Princess I’m an actress, a dog rescuer, and now a writer. My book The Dolphin Princess just won The Beverly Hills Book Award for best children’s fiction of 2015, which was a thrill since it’s a very personal book I created eighteen years ago and finally finished last year.
The idea came to me after my husband, actor Jude Ciccolella, called me “the dolphin princess” on our honeymoon because of my swimming abilities. Though I was not a writer at the time, I told myself that one day I would have to write a book with that title. Soon after, I began making notes and creating my characters. I have always wanted to live on Fifth Avenue in New York, so I had Saroya, (a name I had heard and loved while I was in Saudi Arabia as a teen) my lead little girl, start her journey there and

THE A LIST | EDWARD JUREWICZ
Ponderings for the Human Soul Partridge Singapore author Edward Jurewicz talks a bout his book, Zen-Zen Stories. He invites readers to e njoy a collection of Buddhist stories and tales meant t o make the reader think, reflect, and question. I first came to Japan in the year 2006; that’s almost ten years ago. I am now fifty years old, so I have lived in Japan for a fifth of my life. That’s a long time. I feel like I am almost Japanese, though unfortunately I still don’t speak the Japanese language very much. I can only say a few basic sentences. As an English-language teacher, I traveled to many places and lived in many countries. But none of these places (except for Canada) were as exciting to me as Japan. That is why I have stayed in Japan for so long, and I will continue to live here for some time in the future.
“ …the Enlightened-mind means working for the good of all sentient beings. ” Now let me tell you about the book that I wrote and published with Partridge last year. The book is called Zen-Zen Stories, and the main character in the book is a teacher of Zen Buddhism—Master Hakuin. The creation of this fictional character was inspired by a real person, Master Hakuin Ekaku, who was born in 1686 in the village of Hara at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Hakuin became a Zen monk at the age of fifteen, and at the age of thirty-one, he became the head priest at Shoin-ji Temple. At that time, he adopted his Buddhist name, Hakuin, which means “hidden in white,” possibly referring to the clouds and the snow of Mt. Fuji.
Master Hakuin had many satori experiences, but the most important one came to him at the age of forty-one, when he realized that Bodhi-mind or the Enlightened Mind means working for the good of all sentient beings. I had read some stories about Master Hakuin when I was young, and those stories made me interested in Zen Buddhism. Because I am a vegetarian and I love animals, I felt very close to Master Hakuin and to the Buddhist teachings of helping all sentient beings. Zen stories are usually short and hard to understand. They are usually supposed to make readers think and ponder. My Buddhist stories are also hard to understand. In order to make them easier to understand, I decided to add a brief explanation to each of them. These explanations are called “interpretations,” and they are attached to all the stories in the book. Every story in my book has a set of questions readers should try to answer. These questions are supposed to further engage the readers in the stories. As a result, they may become interested in Zen Buddhism and perhaps may even want to practice it. In any case, I hope the readers of my book will find it entertaining and challenging.

THE A LIST | ERICA CRUZ
Pack Your Bags and Put Your Walking Boots On Erica Cruz t akes readers on a journey born from and inspired by her own life and experiences. My debut novel, aptly titled Up Down Roads, is a snapshot of Australia’s landscape with its undulating roads, while paradoxically portraying life’s ups and downs. A Field of Suitcases is a migrant’s story where one packs seemingly everything into a number of suitcases—including the kitchen sink. I migrated from India some twenty years ago and have never looked back. Together, my husband and I built ourselves a house and home, and today we have two beautiful children and a future to look forward to.
“ Because life is for living, and that’s what makes life so interesting and so unique for each of us. ” Australia is a land of opportunity for anyone who wants to seek out that challenge. It has been a roller-coaster ride, and despite many upheavals, I have come out on top. It was not always easy, because in the early years of migration, I pined for my hometown of Cochin, my aging parents whom I had left behind, my happy childhood memories, and my youngadult life in general in Kerala and South India— God’s own country.
This sense of loss endured for many years before I got to love the great southern land that is Australia, coincidentally also called God’s own country! So the migration and transition story for me was and still is a very personal story. It is the story of any young girl or boy growing up in an Anglo-Indian home. It has always intrigued me that while we conform to a standard in public, when we step into the confines of the four walls of our own homes, the true identity of our persona comes to the fore, and we behave in a way that is unique to our culture, upbringing, and family inclinations. My book is a feel-good novel. It talks about life and the strange and surprising turns decisions cause in shaping our futures. A decision here, a lack of decision there could potentially take one on a different course in life. Does that mean we agonize about the decisions we make? Definitely not! Because life is for living, and that’s what makes life so interesting and unique for each of us. And then there is the sense of commitment and friendship that transcends everything. Human nature and the human capacity to love and to be loved in return is, above all, the most important treasure.

Dr. John Ca rvalho talks with us about his book, The Crisis of Our Time, which was submitted for the Pulitzer Prize in 2014. In ad dition, John was nominated “Best Literary Writer” by the Artists in Music Awards (AIMA) last year.
The Crisis of Our Time is my memoir and discourse regarding my life’s career and philosophy concerning the planet’s most pressing problems. I challenge my readers to discover that the disastrous external crises of our lives emanate from the unity of our conscious and subconscious experiences. Indeed, the great troubles afflicting humanity— war, infectious disease, economic recession, terrorism, family discord, psychological trauma, human-rights violations—dilemmas that appear unsolvable, actually originate when, without truthful self-reflection, we glorify mediocrity rather than strive to excel. Ultimately, I hope that anyone who genuinely seeks excellence over mediocrity, truth over falsity, meaning over purposelessness, and resolution over despair will read the book. My favorite part of self-publishing was having the freedom to write what I wanted. I totally enjoyed incorporating my own content and style without the fear of censorship by editors or the publisher. I’ve been traveling all over California, doing a book tour with Barnes & Noble. I also intend to hit Barnes & Noble stores in Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, the New England states, and New York. Boston and New York City will be especially exciting. THE A LIST | MONICA HATLEY-CARR
Listen to and Follow Your Heart Self-publishing has become the catalyst for many writers to express their creative freedom. One such free soul is Xlibris author Monica Hatley-Carr, who published her book, I Love the Color Pink, last year. Commercial success may lure you to suppress your poetic license at the expense of your heart’s desires—a life lesson Monica has learned. Monica shares one of her blog entries and encourages other writers stifled by the masses to follow their hearts.
Monica Hatley has heeded her heart’s desires in writing her book. Rhyme vs. Prose … Do you go with the agents or your heart? I went to a meeting with fellow children’s writers and illustrators. While I was there, I had the opportunity to have my book reviewed by an agent who had a different approach to my writing. For anyone who has read my book, you know that my book is a rhyme book, but the one thing she told me was if my book was written in prose instead of rhyme, I would get more agents to review my story. From my understanding, there is a trick to rhyming, and if you are off by one word, you will be snubbed. For example: I love to play with the other girls, It’s the best thing to do in the whole wide world!
The words girls and world have similar vowel sounds, but they don’t exactly rhyme, which means, in the thoughts of the agent, you are reaching for rhyming words. The good news from the agent was that my story idea is awesome. The bad news: I have to write it in prose, which means a REWRITE! This brings me to a predicament that I didn’t think I would run into. Should I take the opinion of one agent, or should I write the way I want to? I had so much joy writing this story, and for me the change would really make me sad because of the effort that went into writing the story. To change something that came from heart would be hard for me to do, but if I want to appeal to the masses (agents and publishers) who want it their way or the highway means I must write the way I am told. I am sort of a rebel, which means I am not easily controlled and I’m not the type to keep up with the Joneses, but I am the type who follows her heart. If something doesn’t feel right, then I walk away. So my final thoughts: If you have a vision that is your own, follow your heart. E.B. Lewis, a very prominent illustrator, told me if you are able to express yourself in song, drawing, or writing, that makes you an artist, so with that thought, KEEP writing, KEEP drawing, and as long as it comes from your heart, that’s all that matters. Please feel free to share your thoughts!

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS
An author photo is one of the simplest, most effective forms of marketing available to you as a self-published writer. Your photo communicates your book’s genre and tone, helps you look professional, and increases your credibility.
As a self-published author, your photo is part of your brand, your identity. It’s one of the ways readers can connect with you as a real person, not just a name on a book cover. Here are ten tips for a great author photo—one you’ll be proud to put on your book! >>

1. Yes, you need one! Have a picture taken of yourself that’s used specifically for publicity purposes, not just a decent picture from your last vacation. Something highresolution is best, as you may want to use it in different formats (online, print, etc.) You should be alone in the picture; avoid including pets unless your book’s genre makes them appropriate (as with nature books, for example). 2. Look like … well … you. You want to look your best, but don’t go so overboard with makeup and grooming that you look like you’re visiting one of those glamour headshot studios at the mall. When you show up at a signing, people should be able to recognize you from your photo. 3. Use a professional photographer or someone with professional-level ability. Usually a nice picture comes from the skill of the user, not the price of the camera. You want a photographer who knows what he or she is doing and can also do the necessary post-processing (adjusting exposure, color temperature, and retouching, for example). 4. Practice makes perfect. Practice your facial expression, pose, and posture in a mirror before having your picture taken. The photographer will probably have ideas too, but there’s nothing wrong with making suggestions of your own. Make sure your expression is consistent with the tone of your books. Stephen King doesn’t snarl in his author photos, but he doesn’t exactly smile either. 5. Speaking of poses, keep yours natural. Look relaxed, and keep your arms uncrossed (unless you’re deliberately going for a confrontational appearance). If your <<

A Burning, Intriguing Question Refrain from questions that sound like they came from a home-shopping network ad. They should be mind-boggling or controversial. And if they do sound like a TV commercial, you’d better come up with a good punch line. What if this young woman, who writes such bad poems, in competition with her husband, whose poems are equally bad, should stretch her remarkably long and wellmade legs out before you, so that her skirt slips up to the tops of her stockings? —Gilbert Sorrentino, Imaginative Qualities of Actual Things
Isn’t It Ironic? Irony isn’t just any contradiction. It’s a contradiction that goes against the very purpose of what a person, thing, or situation is, e.g., an ambulance accidentally running over a pedestrian and killing him. Irony can also be a statement that has an element of witty mockery. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. —Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Every time an author puts pen to paper or starts a story, he or she is building a world. How often has cracking open a book been described as entering a whole other world? It does not matter whether the world is somewhere fantastical like Tolkien’s Middle Earth or someplace much closer to home, like any real-life city in which a story takes place. In all cases, the author crafts a world wherein conflicts play out and characters live their stories. World-building happens, even when the author is not paying attention to it. Great authors are aware they are building worlds and are paying attention to the worlds they are building. Why is world-building important? Why should authors be aware of it? An undeveloped world in a story is a shallow world—inconsistent, without atmosphere, and ultimately without any little bits of reality (even a fantasy reality) for a reader to hold on to. This is especially the case for science fiction and fantasy, where it is too easy for plots and conflicts to be trivialized by a certain technology or spell. Why don’t Frodo and the Fellowship ride the eagles all the way to Mordor? Because Sauron is a world power—he would see the eagles from miles away and probably bring a storm down upon them. A well-defined world both supports the actions of the characters and restricts them to acting within limitations. How does one go about good world-building? There are a thousand answers, all correct in their way, and too many to list in this article, but here are some tips and suggestions for authors to keep in mind: • Have a History. It is important that authors keep in mind that their worlds did not just pop into being as soon as the story started (unless that is the story). Authors’ worlds should have a past. That past should affect the present, as actions in the now will affect the future. • Have Rules. Authors should know and consistently apply the rules their world follows. How does magic in their world work? What are the limitations of technology? What do the local mobsters consider to be “neutral ground”? Done right, the world’s rules are not bindings to restrict the story. Instead they are the skeleton to support the story. • Involve the World in the Conflict and Plot. One of the current best at world-building, Brandon Sanderson, incorporates the mechanics, realities, and problems of his worlds into the plots and character development of his stories. Used properly, a story’s world is not just <<

WINNING TIPS FOR ASPIRING AUTHORS
So you have an author website, a couple of social-media sites for your book, and you’ve even done a signing or two at your local bookstore. What’s next? Why not give a book video a try?
We present nine tips for making a video for your self-published book. We won’t teach you everything you need to know, but we’ll give you some ideas to keep in mind when you’re ready to start filming. Read on! >>
>>
scrollable text
Keep it short. A minute or less is fine for a book video. While a film preview is typically 2:00 to 2:30, you should aim for TV-commercial length (thirty seconds) or a little more. You don’t want to scare potential viewers away with a five-minute video. Look for role models. Videos are becoming common parts of book-marketing strategies, and you should have no trouble finding examples online. What do you like (or dislike) about the videos you watched? Keep budget in mind, though; the book video for a bestselling author probably had a much higher production budget than you’ll have. Use storyboards. These comic-panel-like descriptions of each scene are a great (and inexpensive) way of planning your video. Don’t worry about your artistic ability; the storyboards are just a reference for you and your camera operator. A storyboard mistake costs one index card, but a mistake once you start filming can cost you some serious time and money! Make a script. Don’t just narrate your back cover blurb (although that’s an okay place to start for script ideas). The video element means you should need less narration. Write a script that fits what the viewer will be seeing on the screen. Avoid filming actual book scenes. Unless you have top-notch actors, it will just make your video look cheesy. Plus, for genres like sci-fi, adventure, or period stories, a five-second scene from your book could cost more than the rest of the video

What Spirits Are Entertaining or Babysitting Your Children by Dolores Knight A wake-up call to parents and children – the reason for this book. It’s so important I don’t want to miss God. All through my life, I’ve been obedient to God’s voice. But this one thing I disobeyed twenty-three years ago. The Holy Spirit spoke to me. He said, “Daughter, I want you to write a book.” I responded, “Lord, I don’t want to and don’t know nothing about writing a book.” But as the days started, I found myself beginning to write. I had one 125 pages but just stopped. Now twenty-four years have passed. Everything that the Holy Spirit spoke has come to pass.
About the Author Dolores Knight met Jesus and got saved and received the Holy Spirit forty-seven years ago. Now seventy-two years old, she is still strong with the Lord. She is a love walker and a love talker. Her desire is to be a blessing unto God and others around her every day. Dolores has had Bible study at her house for fourteen years. People were saved, people were healed from cancer and all kinds of diseases; they were delivered and set free. She also has been going to the nursing home for about thirteen years now. The Zeiglar Rules by Willow Love When Lilly and Leo are caught in a current moving downstream into the rapids, will God help them escape? Will they find a way out of the current before they are pulled completely under? Will Rhianna and her children ever see Leo again? Will any of the creatures that believe in God find their promised home? Will the rest of the groups of animals inside the other totes make it to safety? Will the concept of the Zeiglar house rules survive? What will happen to the group’s dreams? Will everything be lost here inside the rough waters of the river?
About the Author Willow Love’s The Zeiglar Rules is based on a real event that had taken place one night on September 2010. At the end of a three-day downpour, Love found her home flooded. Love would not go into more details because the horror of the memory and what they lived through still affects her daughter today. If God had not cared for Love’s family, her daughter might not be here today. The Zeiglar Rules is an offshoot of that fateful night, but as seen through the eyes of Christian animals. Love hopes the story will inspire and give hope to others.

‘Much has been made in the last centuries about so-called “natural rights” of men, often used interchangeably as “human rights”. Gabriel Moran explores those rights that are universal human rights separate from rights that people have claimed for themselves. Starting with early Christian theory, and moving through the 19th Century Enlightenment, Moran gives a detailed overview of the history of the concept of human rights and brings it to modern times. This overview and history provides a solid foundation for the second half of the book where he outlines what issues should be considered universal human rights based on cross-cultural and moral basis. Uniquely Human isn’t a casual book, but it’s not difficult to read. The subject is timely, especially considering the current debate in America about how we treated prisoners in the post-9/11 environment. One of Moran’s human rights is a right not to be tortured, yet a majority of Americans approve those extreme interrogation techniques when used against perceived enemies. Defining these rights and coming to a universal acceptance of them should be a priority for modern culture and societies, and still support them in developing countries. The recognition of what rights are universal has evolved over the centuries. Just over 100 years ago, women’s suffrage was controversial in the United States. The rights of homosexuals to marry and be protected in a work environment is now developing, and while still challenged in some states, becoming the rule rather than the exception. Uniquely Human explores those issues and more, providing a framework for readers to understand and protect those rights that should be truly universal to all people.’
