La Perle de Tahiti The Tahitian Pearl Les « Perles de Culture de Tahiti », plus connues sous le nom de « Perles Noires » sont originaires des lagons de Polynésie Française.

Selon la Légende polynésienne, l’arc-en-ciel est une passerelle éphémère reliant les Dieux à la Terre. Oro, Dieu de la paix et de la fertilité, para l’huître perlière de toutes les nuances de l’arcen-ciel. De ce don naquit une perle magnifique, expression du divin sur Terre, qu’il offrit aux femmes humaines qu’il convoitait.

La Pinctada Margaritifera, variété cumingi, fut très recherchée au 19e siècle par l’industrie européenne du bouton. A cette époque, il fallait ouvrir plus de 15 000 huîtres perlières pour avoir la chance de trouver une perle Sab Pearls fine. Ces joyaux rares n’étaient alors l’apanage que des Pachas ou des Rois, elles furent ainsi qualifiées de « Perle des Reines » et de « Reine des Perles » Les premiers essais de culture de Perles de Tahiti débutèrent en 1961 dans le lagon de Bora Bora, lorsque la technique de greffe, importée du Japon, fut appliquée à l’espèce Eva Perles Pinctada Maragaritifera.

En 1963, la récolte des premières perles ayant été concluante, plusieurs fermes perlières sont installées dans les îles de Manihi, Marutea et Mangareva dans l’archipel des Tuamotu-Gambier. Le processus d’élevage de l’huître perlière est long et nécessite beaucoup de soins et d’attention, car c’est une espèce délicate.

La reconnaissance officielle de l’authenticité de la couleur naturelle de la « Perle de Culture de Tahiti » en 1976 par le Gemological Institute of America et l’adoption de l’appellation commerciale « Perle de Culture de Tahiti » par la Confédération Internationale de la Bijouterie Joaillerie et Orfèvrerie (CIBJO), ont permis à ce joyau d’asseoir véritablement sa réputation internationale. La « Perle de Culture de Tahiti » se distingue Coco Blanc

par une grande diversité de formes, tailles, qualités de surface et d’une palette infinie de nuances de couleurs naturelles, allant des couleurs pastel au noir anthracite.

P.Originals Les Perles de Culture de Tahiti sont constituées de milliers de couches de nacre, composée de substances organiques et de carbonate de calcium sous forme d’aragonite.

L’appellation «Perle de Culture de Tahiti» est exclusivement réservée aux perles provenant d’une greffe de l’huître perlière Pinctada Margaritifera (variété cumingi), cultivée en Polynésie Française. La perle doit présenter une couche perlière suffisante et continue sur au moins 80% de la surface, et ne doit pas laisser apparaître le nucleus, même par transparence. Tout produit ne répondant pas à ces critères est considéré comme un rebut et est interdit à la vente. Lors de la récolte, le perliculteur effectue un premier tri, en éliminant tous les rebuts, puis procède à une sélection de sa production, en fonction du diamètre, de la forme et de la qualité de surface des perles.

Polynesian Legend has it that Oro, the God of peace and fertility, would use his Have a Nice Pearl rainbows to visit the earth.

He offered to the oysters’ mother of pearl its iridescence and thus, gave Tahitian pearls their amazing spectrum of colours.

The Pinctada Margaritifera cumingi is commonly known as the black lipped oyster. In the 19th century, its shell was in great demand by the European button industry. In these days of shell harvesting, one would have to open more than 15,000 oysters before finding a natural pearl.

These rare gems would then be seen only in the realms of Pashas and Royalties. Soon the Pearl of 19

Tahiti became known as “Pearl of Queens” and “Queen of Pearls”.

The first trials of Tahitian Pearls culturing began in 1961 in the lagoon of Bora Bora, when the Japanese grafting techniques Pearl Romance were applied to the Pinctada Maragaritifera oyster. The first successful harvest of 1963 proved that a pearl culturing industry was possible in the region. Consequently several pearl farms were set up on the remote islands of Manihi, Marutea and Mangareva in the TuamotuGambier archipelago. The process of raising a Pinctada Maragaritifera oyster is long and requires considerable care and attention, due its frailty.

In 1976 the Gemological Institute of America issued the official recognition of the “Pearl of Tahiti” natural colour authenticity. Furthermore the adoption of the commercial designation “Tahiti Cultured Pearl”, by the International Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), allowed this jewel to definitely establish its international reputation.

The Tahiti Cultured Pearls are best known for their diversity of size, shape, surface quality and endless shades of natural colours, ranging from pale grey

to anthracite black.

The Tahiti Cultured Pearls are made of thousands thin layers of nacre containing organic substances and calcium carbonate (aragonite). The trade designation “Tahiti Cultured Pearl” is exclusively used for cultured pearls Nancy’s Creation produced by the Pinctada Margaritifera oyster, found in French Polynesia.

According to the government regulation, the pearls must display a continuous pearly layer covering at least 80 % of the surface and cannot reveal the underlying nucleus. Pearls not meeting these criteria will be considered as rejects and cannot be sold. When harvesting pearls, the pearl farmer performs an initial sort of his crop, discarding all the rejects. He will then proceed to a more detailed separation, sorting out pearls by size, shape and surface quality.

La Perle de Tahiti The Tahitian Pearl Afin de mieux évaluer la valeur de votre perle, basés sur une classification officielle, nous vous indiquons les quatre critères principaux.

LA TAILLE Elle est mesurée selon le diamètre. Habituellement comprise entre 8 et 12 mm, seules quelques perles atteignent la taille exceptionnelle de 18mm, voire 20 mm.

LA FORME

Ronde: rare et recherchée, c’est une sphère parfaite à l’oeil nu.

Semi-ronde: sphère légèrement déformée.

Semi-baroque: comprend les boutons, les ovales et les poires.

Baroque: forme irrégulière (hors catégorie) Cerclée: cercles distincts sur plus d’un tiers de la surface.

LA QUALITÉ

Elle dépend de la régularité de sa surface et de son lustre, capacité à réfléchir la lumière (effet de miroir) Catégorie A: très beau lustre avec moins de 10 % d’imperfections sur la surface.

LA COULEUR

La perle de Tahiti possède de multiples variantes de couleur : verte, bleue, dorée, argentée, violette... Les plus recherchées sont aubergines, arc-en-ciel ou encore vertes “aile de mouche”.

Mabe de Tahiti L’huître Pinctada Margaritifera permet aussi d’obtenir des perles blister «perle ampoule» de Tahiti, communément appelées mabe (prononcer mabé). La production se fait par sécrétion nacrière d’un demi-noyau collé sur la face interne de la coquille. Plus simple que la greffe de perle qui consiste à insérer, dans la «poche perlière», un nucléus (petite perle) et un greffon (morceau de tissu provenant du manteau d’une huître donneuse), cette technique a permis l’obtention des premières productions dans les fermes perlières pionnières. Après la récolte, contrairement à la perle qui sera juste nettoyée, le mabe sera obtenu après découpage et mise en forme.

Tahitian Mabe The oyster Pinctada Margaritifera also allows to obtain blister pearls of Tahiti collectively called mabe. The production is made by secretion of mother-of-pearl on a half core stuck on the internal face of the shell. Artisanat - Shopping Local Art and Craft Le Pareo / The Pareu Autrefois, le pareo était fait de tapa, écorce martelée, orné de motifs décoratifs locaux.

Aujourd’hui, le pareo est le vêtement de base de tous les Polynésiens autant pour les hommes qui le portent en jupe ou en short que pour les femmes qui peuvent les nouer de mille et une façons .

Les pareos faits localement sont soit peints à la main à la gutta, soit teintés (avec application de pochoir) puis séchés au soleil, soit en sérigraphie... Dans tous les cas, les couleurs restent vives et les motifs originaux.

Nowadays, this large rectangle of cotton fabric printed or hand-painted, colorful and decorative, is the basic cloth for all Polynesians, ideal to go to the beach without useless excess luggage; as much for men who wear it as a skirt or as shorts, as for women who can tie it in a thousand and one ways.The pareo locally made are either hand-painted with gutta or dyed and dried in the sun or screenprinted...

In each case, colors remain lively and the pattern original.

Tatouage Tattoo Le tatouage est un art traditionnel polynésien, en complet renouveau. Autrefois, le tatouage avait pour origine une reconnaissance culturelle et sociale, répondant à des rites de passages à l’âge adulte. Aujourd’hui c’est l’esthétisme qui prime puis sa symbolique.

Certains pratiquent encore le tatouage traditionnel à base de peigne fin sculptés, en os ou dent de cochon, fixé à un manche en bois.

This traditional form of expression in our islands, is experiencing a strong revival as an art represented nowadays by talented young artists whose designs are greatly appreciated by both residents and visitors.

Formerly, the tattoo had for origin a cultural and social recognition, answering rites of passage in

the adulthood. Today it is the estheticism which dominates then its symbolism.

Some of the «oldest» tattoists are still practising the traditional tattoo which is based on a fine carved comb, made of bone or tooth, and fixed on a wooden stick.

Le point de vue de Toatea à Temae, au-dessus du Sofitel, permet d’admirer les couleurs du lagon et la vue magnifique sur Tahiti.

La plage Toatea de Temae, accessible par le chemin du Motu Temae, offre une aire de baignade et de snorkeling exceptionnelle.

Baie de Cook, entourée de montagnes très découpées où viennent mouiller de grands paquebots de croisière et les yachts.

Baie d’Opunohu, encore plus belle, plus sauvage. C’est ici que le capitaine Cook a mouillé ses amarres lors de son premier séjour en 1777.

Le Belvédère, situé à 240 m d’altitude, vous offrira un des plus beaux panoramas de Polynésie: les 2 baies avec, au centre, le Mont Rotui, montagne sacrée. L’accès y est facile de la baie d’Opunohu, via le domaine du Lycée Agricole et vous longerez également les sites archéologiques (marae) à visiter. Vous pouvez également traverser les plantataions d’ananas et la forêt primaire en empruntant la route des ananas à Paopao.

De nombreux sentiers de randonnées, de difficultés variables, permettent de sillonner les montagnes de Moorea au départ de la vallée d’Opunohu, Paopao, Vaiare, Vaiane, Haapiti. Il est conseillé de s’attacher les services d’un guide.

La plage Ta’ahiamanu à Opunohu offre une baignade ombragée, peu profonde et un snorkeling intéressant. Les couchers de soleil y sont spectaculaires.

La plage de Tiahura avec son parc de détente, aires de jeux et son sable blanc face aux 2 motus, accessibles par transfert bateau ou en kayak... qui sont réputés pour la beauté des coraux dans le chenal et leur plages. Attention toutefois aux courants forts, il n’est pas recommandé de nager jusqu’aux motus.

La côte ouest, plus sauvage, vous enchantera par la beauté du lagon à perte de vue et par la puissance de ses montagnes où la végétation abonde généreusement.

Les Cascades d’Afareaitu: Deux cascades accessibles: l’un 100 mètres avant l’hôpital et l’autre par la route de l’école primaire d’Afareaitu.

Ce qu’il faut voir Sights to see The Toatea View Point in Temae, right above Hotel Sofitel, where you can admire the lagoon colors and a breathtaking view of Tahiti island.

Temae ‘s public beach, accessible by the motu Temae’s road, near by the airport, offering an exceptional swimming area and a large playground in a coconut field.

World famous Cook’s Bay, framed by jagged mountains, where large cruise ships often anchor.

Opunohu Bay, less famous but even more beautiful bay, where Captain Cook actually first anchored in 1777.

The Belvedere View Point (790 ft) offers a spectacular panoramic view point over the 2 bays, with Mt Rotui, the sacred Mountain of Ancient Polynesians, in the center. Easy to access from Opunohu Bay, then through the Agriculture vocational School and passes near restaurated archeological sites (marae). You can drive through pineapple fields and primary forest from Paopao road.

Many hiking paths have been opened in the last few years, from Opunohu’s valley, Paopao, Vaiare, Vaiane, Haapiti...For the well-trained hikers, the perced Mountain Mou’a Puta is an unforgettable excursion. It is advices to go with a professionnal guide.

Opunohu’s Ta’ahiamanu beach is a perfect place for picnic, bathing shadowed by the coconut trees and snorkeling. Ideal to admire amazing sunsets.

The 2 motus (sand islet), in Hauru. Beautiful snorkeling in the chenal and white sand beaches, reachable with boat transfer or with a kayak, paddle...very often, there is strong current so don’t swim to cross the channel.

The lagoon

Les eaux de Moorea sont idéales pour découvrir une faune marine extraordinaire, sans risque. De nombreuses variétés de poissons se partagent le lagon: chirurgiens, demoiselles, balistes, perroquets, mérous, carangues et raies pastenague et léopard... et au large, on peut croiser les dauphins (toute l’année), les baleines à bosse (entre août et novembre), les requins à pointe noire, les requins gris et les requins citron (les 3 espèces de requins les plus fréquentes), les tortues à écailles et les tortues

vertes (protégées par la convention de Washington)...

Le seul danger des lagons est le poisson pierre («nohu», rascasse tropicale), dont la piqûre est très douloureuse. Il faut donc éviter de marcher pieds nus sur le corail ou dans les lagons sauvages. Prenez garde aux courants marins, parfois très fort, surtout aux abords des passes.

Activités Nautiques Nautical Activities Les baleines à bosse Les baleines à bosse séjournent en Polynésie de août à novembre. Parcourant environ 7 000 kms depuis l’Antarctique où elles se sont abondamment nourries de crevettes et de petits poissons durant l’été, elles viennent se reproduire l’hiver dans les eaux chaudes du Pacifique Sud. La baleine à bosse a une taille d’environ 15 m et un poids moyen de 25 tonnes. Elle peut vivre plus de 40 ans. Leur gestation dure 11 mois pour donner naissance à un baleineau d’environ 4 mètres et 800 kg.

L’observation des baleines est une expérience unique dans les eaux chaudes et claires de Moorea.

Les prestataires assermentés proposent des sorties d’observation («whale watching») en bateau pour admirer les sauts spectaculaires des baleines (parades amoureuses) et écouter le chant des mâles.

Devenue incontournable, l’observation des raies et des requins pointes noires, pour le plus grand plaisir des touristes qui peuvent nager et même les toucher lors du nourrissage, est une attraction unique à Moorea.

Humpback Whales Humpback whales stay in Polynesian warm waters from August to the end of November. Traveling approximately 7 000 km from Antarctica where they abundantly fed on shrimps and on small fishes during summer, they come to reproduce here the winter.

The humpback whale mesure about 15 m and a 25 ton middleweight. She can live more than 40 years.

Their gestation lasts 11 months to give birth to a whale calf about 4 meters and 800 kg. The observation of whales is a unique experience within the warm and clear waters of Moorea. The professional guides of Moorea propose the «whale watching» activity by boat to admire the spectacular jumps of whales ( loving parades) and listen to the singing males. It is sometimes possible to swim, with mask and snorkel, just few meters of a whale and its baby whale. Since 2002, the activity of whale watching is regulated and submitted to authorization by the authorities of the Country for the biggest respect for cetaceans. La Plongée à Moorea Moorea, entourée de sa barrière récifale ouverte sur 12 passes, est réputée pour l’observation de requins.

Sur le site du « Tiki », vous rencontrerez 4 différentes espèces de requins en une plongée : requins gris, pointe noire, pointe blanche et requin citron…unqiue à Moorea.

Sur le tombant extérieur du récif, outre les requins, vous admirerez anémones, poissons clown, balistes, carangues arc-en-ciel, napoléons, murènes, barracudas, tortues, bécunes, perches jaunes, empereurs, champ de roses coralliennes...

A Opunohu, vous plongerez à travers une succession de canyons et tombants de corail à la rencontre du requin citron (Negaprion Acutidens) à la robe brunâtre et ventre blanchâtre. Ses deux nageoires dorsales sont de taille sensiblement identique et il peut atteindre 3m. La robe jaunâtre des juvéniles est à l’origine de son nom.

Rarement agressif mais cependant imprévisible, le requin citron se caractérise par son nez court, ses petits yeux jaunes et sa mâchoire ouverte, exposant fièrement 13 à 16 rangées de dents de chaque côté des deux mâchoires.

Géographie Geography

Moorea is an island of volcanic origin, situated 12 nautical miles to the Northwest of Tahiti.

Longitude : 149° 49’ 48’’ West Latitude : 17° 32’ 9’’ South Total area = 3,2618 acres and 37.3 miles around.

Mt Tohiea, 3,959ft is the highest mountain.

Among the other peaks are the Moua Puta (the mountain with a hole) 2,722ft, the Rotui (between Opunohu and Cook’s Bay) 2,624 ft, and the Moua Roa 2,499 ft (called Bali Hai after the American film South Pacific).

Moorea’s lagoon is, together with Bora Bora’s, one of the most beautiful in the Society Islands. It harbors 3 “motus”(sand islets) and all kinds of water sports can be practiced. Viewed from the sea by boat, Moorea is even more beautiful.

La Flore / Flora

You will love them all : Tahitian gardenias, many varieties of hibiscus, bougainvillea, red ginger, antherium, golden trumpets, heliconias, wild orchids and plumerias...

Inland are pinapples, grapefruit, vanilla plants, taro and tiare flowers plantations. Visiting the pineapple fields is a pleasant excursion.

Nono or Noni is the yellowish fruit of a small tree.

It looks like a swollen potato. Once processed however, its juice has medicinal and revitalizing properties.

Le Nono ou Noni. Le fruit de cet arbre, de couleur jaunâtre, possède de nombreuses vertus médicinales et fortifiantes, exploitées par l’industrie pharmaceutique et cosmétique.

Histoire / History Moorea, comme les autres îles Polynésiennes, fut peuplée il y a plus de 1000 ans par des navigateurs venus sur de grandes pirogues doubles du SudEst de l’Asie. Moorea s’appelait au XVIIIe siècle « AIMEHO ». Un grand prêtre est à l’origine du changement de nom par la vision d’un beau lézard jaune (se dit MO’O-REA), sur un “Marae” (lieu de culte des anciens Polynésiens). Ces constructions anciennes, en pierre ou en corail, avec plusieurs niveaux étaient autrefois utilisées pour les sacrifices humains. Le plus ancien de Moorea, celui de Afareaitu, daterait de l’an 900.

Deux vestiges en excellent état de conservation peuvent être visités sur la route du Belvédère entre les deux baies.

Les premiers Européens arrivèrent au XVIIIe siècle : l’Anglais Samuel WALLIS, le Français Antoine de BOUGAINVILLE et le célèbre capitaine James COOK en 1777. Les missionnaires protestants et catholiques évangélisèrent les habitants, devenus très pratiquants aujourd’hui. Le protectorat français fut établi en 1842 et réorganisé en 1848 et 1851.Les années 60 sont marquées par un élan économique sans précédent sous l’impulsion du CEP (Centre d’Expérimentation du Pacifique), qui procède à une série d’essais nucléaires jusqu’en 1996. Durant cette époque, le soutien financier de l’Etat français entraîne la mise en place d’une économie moderne basée sur le tourisme et la perle notamment.

Depuis 1984, la Polynésie Française a un statut d’autonomie interne, avec son Assemblée Territoriale et son gouvernement local élu pour 5 ans et dispose même du label de Pays d’Outremer (POM).

Après 20 années d’une politique autonomiste menée par Gaston Flosse, la Polynésie entre en 2004 dans une phase de «Taui» (changement) avec un gouver nement pluriel mené par l’indépendantiste Oscar Temaru. Les nouveaux leaders du Pays peinent néanmoins à trouver des solutions face au marasme économique qui perdure. Malgré une baisse de la fréquentation touristique, le pays continue à croire en son destin et se prépare pour les années à venir à encore mieux accueillir ses visiteurs. Aux dernières élections en mai 2013, le parti autonomiste a repris le pouvoir et c’est maintenant Edouard Fritch qui préside...

Marae Opunohu Moorea, like the other Polynesian islands, was populated by navigators who arrived in large double outrigger canoes from Southeast Asia approximately 1000 years ago. In the 18th Century, Moorea was known as AIMEHO. At the origin of the name change, was the vision a Great Priest had on a “marae” of a beautiful yellow lizzard (i.e.

MO’OREA in Tahitian).

Marae are ancient stone or coral pyramid-shaped constructions with several layers, on which sacrifices sometimes took place. The oldest Marae in Moorea is the Afareaitu Marae, it dates back to year 900. You can easily visit the Marae on the road to the mountain viewpoint. The first Europeans arrived during the 18th century, the Englishman Samuel WALLIS, the Frenchman Antoine de BOUGAINVILLE, and the famous Captain James COOK in 1777. The Protestant and Catholic missionaries converted the inhabitants who are still regular churchgoers. The French Protectorate was established in 1842 and re-organized in 1848 and 1851. The Sixties were marked by spectacular economic growth fostered by the CEP (Experimentation Center of the Pacific) created in French Polynesia for French nuclear testing.

Since 1984, French Polynesia has a statute of internal self-government, with a Territorial House of Commons, a Government.

After 20 years of autonomist government led by Gaston Flosse, since 2004, Tahiti enters in a phase of «Taui» (change) with a plural government led by Oscar Temaru. The new leaders have difficulty in finding solutions in front of economic slump which continues. In spite of a tourism decline, the country continues to believe in its fate and gets ready to welcome even better their visitors. In May 2013, the autonomist party is back and it’s now Edouard Fritch who is president and work to get the country out of the crisis.

Useful informations Point Kilométrique Il faut savoir que l’indication kilométrique démarre de l’aéroport, que le 1er km en allant vers l’ouest (vers les Baies) est au Village de TEMAE. Si vous allez vers l’est, un autre 1er km se trouve face à l’entrée de l’hôtel SOFITEL IA ORA MOOREA. Ne soyez donc pas surpris, entre HAAPITI et VARARI, passé le PK35, de voir le kilométrage décroître.

Culte / Church Services Protestant : Dans les îles de la Société, 80 % de la population est protestante. Le premier temple, celui de Papetoai, fut reconstruit en 1867, sur les ruines de l’ancien.

Horaires des messes : Maharepa, Teavaro, Afareaitu, Haapiti, Papetoai, dimanche à 10 h.

Catholique : Horaires des messes : Pao Pao le dimanche à 9h30. Papetoai le dimanche à 8h.

Haapiti à 7h30 le dimanche. Afareaitu le samedi à 18h.

Kilometric point It must be pointed out that kilometer markers start from the airport, with km1 starting to the West (towards the Bays) in the village of Temae. If you head eastwards, another km1 is found at the entrance of the Ia Ora Moorea Sofitel Hotel. Don’t be surprised then as past km 35, the kilometer indication decreases, between Haapiti and Varari.

Protestant: 80 % of the Society islands population is protestant. The fist temple, in Papetoai was rebuild in 1867 on the remnants of the old one.

Maharepa, Teavaro, Afareaitu, Haapiti and Papetoai, mass on Sundays at 10:00 am. Catholic: On Sundays, mass at 9:30 am at Pao Pao, 8:00 at Papetoai, 7:30 at Haapiti and saturday at 6:00pm at Afareaitu.

Climat / Climate Les îles du Vent jouissent d’un climat tropical chaud et humide, caractérisé par un ensoleillement important (2 500 h/an). La prépondérance des alizés, ces vents d’est qui balaient les îles polynésiennes, leur assure une fraîcheur agréable.

La saison chaude et humide de novembre à avril avec des températures moyenne de 28°. La saison fraîche et sêche de mai à octobre offre des soirées fraîches (T° moyenne: 26°). C’est le fameux hiver austral. Aux inter-saisons, le temps est radieux.
