very beginning of the year, in Border Heritage, we try to make a balance of our set resolutions. And we concluded that we are a privileged cutting-edge media, focused on keeping our leadership. Our goal to maintain our values couldn’t be possible without the acceptance of our generous and loyal readers. We have arrived in 2020, aiming to celebrate our Fifth Anniversary, renewed with energy, ready for new challenges, and to fulfill our dreams. At Border Heritage, we are very proud of being the spearhead in many aspects. Those who know us know that our central values are professionalism and responsibility, that’s why we put all of our hearts in every single edition. Talking about hearts, we bring you our first issue of this year in the season where you can express and demonstrate the most beautiful feeling: love. omo cada inicio de año, en Border Heritage hacemos un balance de los propósitos fijados, y afortunadamente llegamos a la conclusión que somos un medio de comunicación privilegiado. hen in sixth grade, Pilo Galindo wrote a short stor y; the teacher rather than congratulated, grounded him because he considered it wasn’t the boy´s stor y. Pilo´s father told him to be proud of himself because the short stor y was so good that it seemed that no kid had written it.
uando Pilo Galindo estaba en sexto año de primaria escribió un cuento para una de sus clases, su profesor, en vez de felicitarlo por el escrito, lo regañó porque pensó que no era de él; su padre le dijo que debería estar orgulloso porque el cuento era tan bueno que no parecía escrito por un niño.
Since then, Pilo Galindo never stopped writing. Through the years, he exchanged stories and poetr y for dramaturgy. His curiosity about discovering new ways to describe things and the fact that he didn’t consider himself a good poet, led him to write dramaturgy.
Desde entonces, Pilo Galindo no ha dejado de escribir. A lo largo de los años cambió el cuento y la poesía por la dramaturgia, su curiosidad por descubrir nuevas maneras de describir las cosas y por no sentirse suficientemente buen poeta, lo llevaron por el camino de la dramaturgia.
His first play, “ El indolente” (The Nonchalant), describes the post-electoral conflict of 86 in the state of Chihuahua. With it, he started his unique literar y work that addresses in most of them, political and sociocultural issues that affect the border. “ I write about Juarez because it is what is close to me, what touches me; you can’t write about what you don’t know. Juarez is full of stories; in the city´s labyrinths, you can find fascinating, painful, and love stories… 20

Su primera obra, “ El indolente”, narra el conflicto postelectoral del 86 en el estado de Chihuahua, con ella Galindo empezó su obra literaria que se caracteriza por tocar temas, en su mayoría políticos y socioculturales de esta frontera. “ Escribo de Juárez porque es lo que esta cerca, es lo que me toca, no puedes escribir de algo que desconoces, que no sabes; Juárez esta lleno de historias, en los laberintos de esta ciudad hay historias fascinantes, dolorosas, amorosas …”

The writer´s life hasn´t been easy. Still, with the support of his family and his wife Silvia Rodriguez, and of course his talent, Pilo has evolved into one of the most prolific drama writers in Northern Mexico, with almost 100 plays. He has been the worthy winner of several national and international prizes such as the Victor Hugo Rascon Banda, the prize Juan Ruiz de Alarcon given by the Guerrero State Government, and the National Institute of Bellas Artes. He also received the Medal for Cultural Merit by the State of Chihuahua, and in 2012 he received the Artistic Trajector y Prize by the Cd. Juarez Government.
La vida para el escritor no fue fácil, pero con el apoyo de su familia y de su esposa Silvia Rodríguez, y por supuesto, por su talento, Pilo se convirtió en uno de los dramaturgos más prolíficos del Norte de México. Cuenta ya con casi cien obras de teatro. Ha sido merecedor de varios premios importantes de dramaturgia nacionales e internacionales como el Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda; El Premio Bellas Artes de Dramaturgia Juan Ruiz de Alarcón, otorgado por el Gobierno del Estado de Guerrero y el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes. Recibió también la Medalla al Mérito Cultural del Estado de Chihuahua y en diciembre de 2012 el Gobierno Municipal de Juárez le otorgo el Premio a la Trayectoria Artística.
At the present time, he is working on his first novel and a stor y on a slain journalist, based upon Mirolsalva Breach´s case. With his work, the playwright doesn’t pretend to give hindsight or a specific message; he has always evaded it. In the end, his main goal is to tell stories to wring consciousness. Galindo, always distinguishes his foul enemies, knowing that gives him clarity in what to write and how to write it. His enemy is stupidity. “ There is stupidity ever ywhere, in politics, in art, in sports, and in society, I know I´ll never win over it, and no, I know I can´t beat it, nobody can.” But at least Theatre can expose it.
Actualmente Galindo está trabajando en su primera novela y en un texto inspirado en el asesinato de la periodista Miroslava Breach. Con sus obras, el dramaturgo no pretende dar un mensaje ni una moraleja, al contrario, siempre lo ha evitado. Finalmente, su propósito es contar historias para estrujar la conciencia. Pilo Galindo distingue muy bien a su enemigo, eso le da claridad en lo que quiere escribir y cómo lo quiere escribir. Su enemigo es la estupidez, “ hay estupidez en todos lados, en la política, en el arte, en el deporte y en la sociedad. Yo sé que no le voy a ganar nunca ” y no, no se le puede ganar, pero a través del teatro se le puede exhibir.
Henr y Miller claimed that Theatre can´t disappear because it ’s the only art where humanity can deal with itself. When a play of Galindo is per formed on stage, the audience put themselves in front of a mirror that reflects the reality of what is life itself. 22

T
his past Januray 4th, in the City of Jimenez Chihuahua, they celebrated their 267th anniversar y of the Foundation of their City. After a centur y of many disputes of the territor y between the colonial forces, which they sought to establish their authority and the resistance that originating groups would present like the Tobasos, in 1973 it was decided that they would establish the Presidio of Santa María de Las Caldas de Huejoquilla. This presidio played the role of the militar y defense between the regional rebel groups and the french troops which threatened to amplify their reign towards the “ Septentrión nuevo hispánico”, (Northern region of New Spain) without passing by the labor of territor y colonizer through the families of presidial soldiers. Its geografical location in Nueva Vizcaya, gave it a strategic labor in the second half of the 18th. Centur y, which was a focal point of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. It helped the mining population of the Region of Parral, Santa Bárbara, and San Francisco del Oro, and agricultural haciendas near Florido, Conchos and San Pedro rivers. 24

l pasado 4 de enero Ciudad Jiménez celebró 267 años de su fundación. Luego de mas de un siglo de disputas por el territorio entre las fuer zas coloniales que buscaban establecer su dominio y la capacidad de resistencia que presentaron los grupos originarios como los tobosos, en 1753 se decidió establecer el presidio de Santa María de Las Caldas de Huejoquilla. Este presidio jugó el papel de defensa militar ante los grupos rebeldes regionales y la potencial intención francesa que amenazaba con ampliar sus dominios hacia territorios del Septentrión nuevo hispánico, sin soslayar su labor de colonizador de territorios a través de las familias de los soldados presidiales. Su ubicación geográfica en la Nueva Vizcaya le otorgó una labor estratégica en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII, siendo un punto toral del Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. Auxiliaba militarmente a las poblaciones mineras de la región de Parral, Santa Bárbara y San Francisco del Oro, y a las haciendas agrícolas cercanas a los ríos Florido, Conchos y San Pedro.

In those years the City of Jiménez was known for its production of cattle, cereals, and fruit trees. It was a forced stop for many merchants of goods, people with traditions, knowledge, and hopes for the ancient route which linked hundreds of communities from Mexico City to Santa Fe in New México. Nowadays, Jimenez has a generous historic, cultural, and natural heritage. The former Hacienda of Dolores keeps its regional histor y alive. The building is known as the most emblematic building of the City. The old Haciendas Tierra Blanca and Los Remedios, and the former Headquarters of División del Norte’s army, are the town’s historical monuments which they contribute to strengthen their identity. It is worthy to mention that the old downtown of the City still holds yesterday ’s taste. Its urban trace and architectonic style are one of the most important of the state after Parral and Chihuahua.
The town also has rock paintings of great format and among its natural attractions stand out the hot springs of Dolores, Los Remedios, and from the Silent Zone.

En aquellos años Jiménez se significó por su producción de ganado, cereales y frutales. Fue paso obligado para muchos en su ir y venir con numerosas mercancías, saberes, tradiciones y esperanzas por la antigua ruta que enlazaba a cientos de comunidades desde la ciudad de México hasta las tierras de Santa Fe, Nuevo México. Hoy en día, Jiménez cuenta con un rico patrimonio histórico, cultural y natural. La ex hacienda de Dolores mantiene viva la historia regional al ser el edificio mas emblemático de la ciudad. Las ex haciendas de Tierra Blanca y Los Remedios, así como el ex cuartel de la División del Norte son otros monumentos históricos representativos del municipio que contribuyen al fortalecimiento de su identidad. Cabe mencionar que el centro antiguo de la ciudad aun guarda su sabor de antaño. La traza urbana y estilo arquitectónico lo hacen ser uno de los mas importantes del estado después de Parral y Chihuahua. El municipio también cuenta con pinturas rupestres de gran formato y entre sus atractivos naturales destacan las aguas termales de Dolores y Los Remedios, además de la Zona del Silencio.
Without a doubt the candy such the milk candy or the ‘ jamoncillos ’ is the best of the gastronomical traditions. The candy is elaborated by the Camacho family since 1905, these are examples of the diversified gastronomy like cheese and asadero cheese, carne asada, and ‘asado de puerco’ (roast pork).

Fortunately over one docen of photographers captured what happened to the city and its sourroundings from the beginning of the 20th centur y. Thanks to their talent and their camera lenses we can imagine the culture which makes people ver y proud of this region of Chihuahua.

n the midst of the impeachment trial of Donald Trump, the Senate approved the USMCA, which will overhaul NAFTA. Many Border Heritage readers, especially those from Canada or Mexico who work in the United States, are deeply concerned about how USMCA could modify their ability to live and work in the U.S. If so, we have great news for you. Whether you hold a TN visa, or are pursuing a degree that will eventually qualify you for one of the 60 TN occupations, you have nothing to worry about from USMCA, because the new treaty leaves all of the old NAFTA visa provisions in place. Even better news is that a key (but often forgotten) regulation, remains unchanged by USMCA, and knowing about it may save you a lot of time and money. A provision called Automatic Visa Revalidation is tucked away in a rarely-read section of the law (Title 22, rather than Title 8, of the Code of Federal Regulations), and gives most TN visa holders the right to travel for two years past the expiration date of their visa. Each case is unique, and you should consult with us before you try to travel on an expired visa; but, if you are renewing your visa every year, you probably shouldn’t be. nmedio del juicio político del Presidente Donald Trump, el Senado aprobó un nuevo Acuerdo Estados Unidos-México-Canadá (ahora USMCA, por sus siglas en inglés) que reformará el vigente Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte (lo que es ahora NAFTA, por sus siglas en inglés). Muchos lectores de Border Heritage, especialmente aquellos de Canadá o México que trabajan en los Estados Unidos, están profundamente preocupados por cómo el USMCA podría modificar su capacidad de vivir y trabajar en los Estados Unidos. Si es así, tenemos buenas noticias para usted. Ya sea que tenga una visa TN o esté buscando un título profesional que eventualmente lo califique para una de las 60 ocupaciones bajo el marco de la visa TN, no tiene nada de qué preocuparse del USMCA porque el nuevo acuerdo deja en vigencia todas las disposiciones previas de visa establecidas en el NAFTA. ver y region has its landmarks, whether natural or man-made, these places give identity to whom it holds them. Right here in El Paso, you can find places like this, the Franklin Mountains and the Remembrance Star on top of the Scenic Drive are a couple of welcoming symbols. When a traveler comes from the roads surrounding El Paso, they know for sure they are close to their destination by watching dozens of billboards inviting them to El Paso Saddleblanket Company. Another iconic landmark of our beloved city created by Dusty and Bonnie Henson. The stor y behind The El Paso Saddleblanket Company is about trial and error, success and stumbles. Merchant blood runs through Henson´s veins. He followed his father and uncles ’ steps; his love for commerce, started early in his life. He learned how to do business by selling ´sno-cones,´ donkey rides, and pencils to his schoolmates. His teen years were no different; with his family ’s help, he established businesses in Arizona and Colorado. During this life stage, he learned that economic independence is made with hard work and that its easier to lose money than making it. 34

La historia detrás de El Paso Saddleblanket Company es una llena de esfuer zos, de prueba y error, de éxitos y tropiezos. En las venas de Henson corre sangre de negociante. Siguiendo el ejemplo de su padre y su tío, Dusty Henson inició desde niño su amor por el comercio. El Paso Saddleblanket Company is recognized of artisan jewelry, rugs, ceramics, While based in Fort Bliss, looking for some fun, he used to cross to Juarez and started to do business with local artisan salesmen. He bought merchandise to send the family-run store in Colorado. He and his life partner, Bonnie, decided to establish their residency in this borderland and sold their Mexican handcraft on the back of a pick-up truck. Later, both opened the first store on Alameda Street. Cuando estuvo establecido en Fort Bliss recibiendo adiestramiento, cruzaba a Juárez en busca de diversión y fue entonces cuando empezó a hacer negocio con vendedores de artesanías, las cuales enviaba al negocio familiar en Colorado. Él y su compañera de vida, Bonnie decidieron establecer su residencia en esta frontera. Vendían las piezas mexicanas en la caja de una camioneta pick-up. cting is a natural-born drive, but some people discover it through time; said Mexican actor and teacher Luis Felipe Tovar in an intensive acting workshop called “El Set Viaja” (The Set travels) in Ciudad Juarez last December. The invitation was from lawyer Silvia Delgado to all who are into performing arts. More than 30 participants became the first generation of actors who fulfilled their dream to participate in a short film.

elchior, Caspar, and Balthazar pay a surprise visit to El Paso Children´s Hospital bearing gifts for the impatient kids that are recovering from chronical illnesses. It was very satisfactory for the Magi to bring joy to the little ones that are struggling with illness. They promote the tradition that celebrates the Epiphany when they followed the Star to find and worship Baby Jesus. For a couple of hours, the visitors, who are part of the Cultural Society of Spain in El Paso, toured the rooms to deliver presents for the children. They recreated the magic morning of January sixth, when the Three Wise Men visit the homes of millions of children around the world.

Durante un par de horas los caminantes, que forman parte de la Sociedad Cultural de España en El Paso, recorrieron las diferentes habitaciones para entregar presentes a los pequeños acompañados de sus padres. Recrearon la mágica madrugada del 6 de enero, cuando los Tres Reyes Magos visitan los hogares de millones de niños alrededor del mundo.

rom the North of Texas in Dallas, I was watching the news with my family when I saw the news about the massive shooting, the massacre that occurred in a supermarket, in El Paso August 3th., and I started thinking about what we can do for this community because this is not normal; it is sad, this not acceptable”. That is how the Associate Professor of the University of Texas at Dallas and the director of the Credo Community Choir Jonathan Palant, start the inter view with Border Heritage about the “ Reconnecting Through Art Festival.” “ Un festival Donde la Musica y el Arte nos reune a todos ” was the motto of the festival. The main purpose of the festival was to create music by unifying the Esperanza Azteca Orchestra and the University of Texas at Dallas choirs. Mezzosoprano Frederica von Stade and the bass-baritone Ricardo Herrera, (who was born and raised in Ciudad Juarez) per formed together for the first time at El Punto. “ The idea was to create something that is in our hands which is music, and I reached out to Mrs. Cecilia Levine and talking to her I proposed doing something together which was a concert, and that ’s when she brought me to El Punto in Ciudad Juarez and to the El Paso County Coliseum and decided to do a concert incorporating art and music.” A sense of togetherness flew in the festival. Musicians, young and adult singers from two countries worked as one to make music to share love and peace with the audience. Ciudad Juarez ’, El Paso’s, and the Dallas ’ communities rose their voice to stop violence, stop discrimination towards color, age, and gender. Hundreds of enthusiast people from Juarez and El Paso attended the festival that brought together the three communities. We must remember that the alleged perpetrator of the fatal shooting lived in North Dallas. For Professor Palant, musician, and festival coordinators, it ’s essential to look for different alternatives for the well-being of the community. “ We wish for these communities to be known for their unity, which is beneficial for both of them, instead of them being recognized negatively.”

n el norte de Texas, en Dallas, estaba viendo las noticias con mi familia cuando vi la nota sobre el tiroteo de la masacre ocurrida en un supermercado de El Paso el pasado 3 de agosto; y frente a los sucesos ocurridos, nos dimos a la tarea de pensar qué podíamos hacer por esta comunidad, ya que esto no es normal, es triste e inaceptable.” Así comenzó la charla que el Profesor asociado de la Universidad de Dallas y director de Credo Community Choir, Jonathan Palant tuvo con Border Heritage, tras el concierto “ Reconnecting Through Art ”. “ Un festival donde la Música y Arte nos reúne a todos ” es el lema del evento cuyo objetivo principal fue el conjuntar los talentos del coro de niños de la Orquesta Esperanza Azteca y el de la Universidad de Dallas. También se contó con la participación de la mezzosoprano Frederica von Stade, y el bajo-barítono, originario de Ciudad Juárez, Ricardo Herrera; que por primera ocasión se presentaron juntos en El Punto. “ La idea era crear algo que estuviera en nuestras manos, como es la música, y así convoqué a la Sra. Cecilia Levine; platicando con ella le propuse hacer un concierto juntos, y fue así que nos trajo al Punto en Ciudad Juárez. También nos presentamos en el Coliseo de El Paso, con un concierto de Arte y música ”. En el evento solo existió la unión. Los músicos, cantantes jóvenes y adultos de dos diferentes países trabajaron en conjunto para hacer música y poder compartir el amor y la paz con el publico; alzando la voz en las comunidades de Juárez, El Paso y Dallas para vivir sin violencia, sin distinción de raza, color edad y origen. Cientos de asistentes de ambas comunidades asistieron a este evento que unió a las tres comunidades que en cierta forma están vinculadas con el lamentable hecho. Habrá que recordar que el presunto perpetrador de la masacre residía en el norte de Dallas. Tanto para Palant como para los participantes y coordinadores es importante buscar alternativas enfocadas al bien de la comunidad.

hat begun with a strategy to have a better figure after her third pregnancy, took Silvia Rosalva Vega Ponce to achieve the maximum recognition that a fitness amateur contender aspires: the PRO card. The card endorses Vega as a professional of the IFBB (International Federation of Body Builders). Born in Chihuahua City in 1974, Rosalva has a Bachelor ’s Degree in Marketing and Preschool Education. She started to compete in the Bikini Fitness contest in 2010 and in 2014 she became a personal trainer. “ It is hard to be a working mother and have time for yourself, but still, I achieved the goal to train and made positive changes in my self-esteem and attitude.”

o que inició como una estrategia para lograr una mejor figura después de su tercer embarazo, llevó a Silvia Rosalba Vega Ponce a conseguir en octubre de 2019 el máximo reconocimiento para un competidor Fitness Amateur: El Carnet PRO, que la avala como una profesional de la liga IFBB (Federación Internacional de Fisicoculturismo) Elite Mundial. La originaria de Chihuahua, Chihuahua nació el 22 de mar zo de 1974 y se graduó como licenciada en Administración en Mercadotecnia y en Educación Preescolar. Desde el 2010 empezó a participar en competencias de “ Bikini Fitness ” y a partir de 2014 se convirtió en entrenadora personal.
“ Es difícil ser madre, trabajadora y buscar un tiempo para tu persona, aun así, cumplí mi objetivo de entrenar y lograr cambios positivos en mi autoestima y actitud ”.
With the help of her coach Oscar Dominguez, she became the first champion in her categor y under 41 years. Nevertheless, since 2017, she trains with her husband, the bodybuilder Rafael Campuzano and the IFBB Elite Pro Martha Sanchez. Since then, she had achieved seven international and nationals prizes. Silvia has six days a week training routine and a well-balanced diet. Her biggest motivation is to give a better version of herself. “ My philosophy is to live fully, with righteousness and strength. Be persistent, patient, and passionate in ever y aspect of my life.” 58

Bajo la dirección del coach Oscar Domínguez, se colocó como la primera campeona nacional en su categoría a los 41 años. No obstante, desde el 2017 es entrenada por su esposo, el también físicoconstructivista Rafael Campuzano y la IFBB Elite Pro Martha Sánchez. Desde ese entonces ha conseguido siete premios nacionales e internacionales. Con una rutina de entrenamiento de seis días a la semana y una alimentación balanceada, Silvia Vega confiesa que su mayor motivación es ser una mejor versión de sí misma: “ Mi filosofía es vivir en plenitud, rectitud y fortaleza. Ser perseverante, paciente y apasionada en todos los aspectos de mi vida ”.

uarez´ Mayor Armando Cabada Alvídrez, along with his wife, friends, businessmen, and guest, opened the Paseo Juan Gabriel, Siempre en mi mente. (Juan Gabriel´s Walk, always in my mind) Located at Colombia Street and 16 de Septiembre Avenue. With a countdown, the Mayor revealed a plaque and a sculpture of the songwriter. Juan Gabriel started his artistic career in this border. The statue was created by Pedro Francisco Rodríguez. This new space was driven by the Chambers of Commerce (CANACO), Tejada Group, State and Local Governments, and ¡Ah Chihuahua! Trust. And, it is right next to the iconic house that belonged to the late singer. Photos, song phrases, benches, a gazebo and, sets of lights bring life to the place. The opening of Paseo Juan Gabriel was full of media personalities, Government, and Consulate Officials, plus distinguished guests that came from El Paso to this touching event. l alcalde Armando Cabada Alvídrez acompañado de su esposa, familiares, empresarios y ciudadanos, inauguró el Paseo Juan Gabriel denominado “ Siempre en mi mente”, ubicado en la calle Colombia y Avenida 16 de Septiembre en Ciudad Juárez. Con una cuenta regresiva, se develaron una placa conmemorativa y una escultura en honor al cantautor, quien inició su carrera artística en la frontera. La escultura es creación del artista juarense Pedro Francisco Rodríguez. El nuevo espacio impulsado por miembros de la Cámara Nacional de Comercio (Canaco), Grupo Tejada, el Gobierno Independiente y el Fideicomiso ¡Ah Chihuahua!, se localiza a un costado de la residencia del fallecido intérprete, y cuenta con imágenes así como frases de las canciones del ídolo juarense; bancas, un kiosko y alumbrado armonizan el lugar. El evento contó con la presencia de importantes personalidades de los medios de comunicación, del gobierno municipal y estatal, del Consulado de México en El Paso y funcionarios de la vecina ciudad de El Paso. No pudieron faltar los seguidores del Divo de Juárez, quienes al ritmo del mariachi “ Canto a mi tierra ”, disfrutaron de una magnifica velada. 72

he 2019 Nutcracker Runway became an all-out gala, bringing everything to one place; fashion, goodwill, and enjoyment. The DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton in El Paso, Texas, turned in to a bazaar sponsored by different brands of woman-oriented products. Fashion stores like On Next Sunday, Dillard’s, and Black Tie, showed their exclusive designs in an elegant catwalk. This exclusive event for the border community was hosted by Border Heritage Magazine. On this occasion, the Boys & Girls Club`s Association received a donation on behalf of the magazine to help low-income youth to achieve their highest potential as productive, responsible, and supportive citizens. l evento Nutcraker Runway 2019 resultó todo un acontecimiento, al reunir en un solo lugar moda, convivencia y buena voluntad por parte de organizadores y asistentes. El hotel DoubleTree by Hilton, en El Paso, Texas, se convirtió en un bazzar patrocinado por distintas marcas de artículos dirigidos al publico femenino. Las tiendas On next Sunday, Dillard´s y Black Tie, exhibieron modelos exclusivos en una elegante pasarela. La revista Border Heritage fue la anfitriona de este exclusivo evento para la comunidad fronteriza. En esta ocasión, la asociación “Boys & Girls Clubs” recibió un donativo por parte de la Revista con el propósito de apoyar a jóvenes de bajos recursos para que alcancen su máximo potencial como ciudadanos productivos, solidarios y responsables. En el desayuno, destacó la presencia de la primera dama de El Paso, Adair Margo, el Cónsul Mauricio Ibarra Ponce de León y el Juez del Condado, Ricardo Samaniego quienes ofrecieron su agradecimeinto y buenos deseos a los asistentes.
