arch, the third month of the year, when spring is just around the corner. It is incredible to write about this season that seems warm and sunny when our weather is determined to remind us that we are in winter, surrounding our mountains and streets with white snow. Once again, we will see the trees and flowers blooming, popping their smell and colors as if they give thanks to the sun that is about to awaken the earth.

In March, the flowers are reborn, and the first new buds appear, and like so, we are happy to share new faces, new stories, and new places to enjoy. We want to give special thanks to Fernando Valdés for sharing with us his photograph, which we show off on this month's cover. In the picture, we can appreciate from a very particular angle the harmony of contemporary architecture and industrial infrastructure.

éxico commemorates the 200th anniversar y of its Independence’s consummation in 2021, a complicated year of pain, fear, and hope. The `Grito de Dolores’ given by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla on September 15, 1810 -calling for the insurgency against the Spanish Crown- was followed by 11 long and bloody years of armed struggle. After Hidalgo’s death, followed by José María Morelos’, the independence movement entered a resistance and guerrilla warfare period, mainly in the south of New Spain, led by Vicente Guerrero. He was a mestizo and Afro-American descendant who later became president of the republic. Guerrero, and Agustín de Iturbide, raised the Plan de Iguala. In this political document, the consummation of Independence was “agreed” and made possible the Army of the Three Guarantees’ arrival to Mexico City and the Vice-regal power fall in 1821. After all these years, we still have evidence of those years of confrontations, utopias, and insurgent epics. Documents, paintings, legends, weapons, and sites contribute to keeping the historical memor y alive. A unique building located in the city of Chihuahua is an example of these memories that fill us with pride and identity as Mexicans: The Hidalgo’s Dungeon, the last resting place of the Father of our Nation. This distinguished space, which vindicates national Independence and evokes Mexico’s women and men’s freedom, is located in Casa Chihuahua. In this place, visitors easily understand the conditions of loneliness and hardship of Miguel Hidalgo’s last days. Not even the wide walls of that dungeon were enough to silence the libertarian voice. Nor were the bullets used in his execution enough lead to annihilate the sovereign aspiration of a mestizo society that sought to write its own histor y. www.borderheritagemagazine.com

Improving you water quality, in order to live a better and healthier life.

umberto Estrada and Pedro Alcalá are the founding partners of Aqua Innova, a Rain Soft firm certified by the Water Quality Association. Aqua Innova is a supplier of alkaline water for domestic and commercial use in Juarez and El Paso. Currently, health professionals recommend drinking alkaline water, as it has proven to have benefits in balancing the body ’s pH. An alkaline environment prevents diseases caused by acidity and improves the immune system. “ We are thrilled to contribute a little bit to the health of the community through a system of alkaline water filters and all the benefits that come with it.” By improving the quality of the water we consume, we are also improving the quality of life in our organism, both inside and out; as with this same water, we can bathe, do our laundr y, use it in household cleaning, and, most importantly, in the preparation of our food. “ We visit customers, we go to their homes or businesses, and run a chemical test, we show them the condition of the water in their homes. We show them the quality and all the contaminants in the liquid they are consuming.

Our diagnosis can be checked on an internet site, indicating, by zip code, the water ’s quality and conditions. Once the customer realizes what they are consuming, we show them the great benefits of this filter, how to purchase and use it. We are providing a unique benefit. The most important thing is that we are already reaching different areas in El Paso, Las Cruces, and Ciudad Juarez. Our purpose is for the public to acknowledge our system, how simple it is to have one in their homes, and all the benefits they ’ll get from it. Nowadays, many doctors recommend their patients with all types of diseases, including cancer, to drink this type of alkaline water. Comparing the cost of bottled alkaline water against our system is a bargain that patients would have in their own kitchen and on hand: vital liquid to improve their health. We have two types of filters, one that filters all the water systems in the home and another filter placed in the kitchen to drink alkaline water. We are also working hand in hand with Pure and Gentle, a ver y high-quality organic soap and detergent company; we provide our customers with approximately five years of product. It’s a significant saving on detergents and soaps. Investing in improving the quality of the water we consume should be a priority; when drinking the vital liquid, we must think that it is essential to use an adequate system that Aqua Innova recommends installing in our home for our health and those who we love. www.borderheritagemagazine.com

HEALTH

IT’S IMPORTANT TO REALIZE THAT STRESS & SKIN AFFECT OUR SKIN.

WHAT? Yes! Have you noticed that when you pull and all nighter your skin looks tired and dull the next morning? Or when you get stressed out and you start breaking out! Its the worst! When I was in nursing school we used to study all day every day until we could no longer take it! We used to order fast food A LOT, and we were barely getting any sleep! (And don’t get me started on the coffee runs! Venti Vanilla Latte packed with sugar, OF COURSE!!) Those were the days where I did not pay ANY attention to my body, to my skin, and more importantly how I knowingly neglected my stress and anxiety. It was exactly in nursing school where I experienced f irst hand the effects sleep and stress had on my health and skin.

I developed eczema during this stressful times and yet I never associated this signs and symptoms to stress, being malnourished and not sleeping well. It never even crossed my mind that my body was actually communicating with me…

. Chronic inadequate and poor quality sleep accelerates intrinsic aging.

. Poor sleepers have signif icantly diminishedcapacity to recover f rom exogenous stressors such as epidermal barrier disruption and UV induced erythema.

. Poor sleepers are more dissatisf ied with their physical appearance than good sleepers.

Another Study published in 2011 by Dr.Whitney Bowe, a well-known dermatologist identif ies how the brain is connected to our skin.

Potential Pathways of the Gut-BrainSkin Axis in Acne Vulgaris: [1] Psychological distress alone or in combination with [2] high fat diet, processed comfort foods devoid of f iber, cause alterations to [3] gut motility and microbiota prof ile [4]. Loss of normal microbial biof ilm (Bif idobacterium in particular) causes intestinal permeability and endotoxins gain systemic access [5]. Burden of inflammation and oxidative stress is increased, substance P is elevated, insulin sensitivity is decreased due to endotoxemia [6]. In those genetically susceptible to acne vulgaris, this cascade increases the likelihood of excess sebum production, exacerbations in acne and additional psychological distress. Both probiotics and antimicrobials may play a role in cutting off this cycle at the gut level. It also states in this study conclusion that, “It was not the contention of Stokes and Pillsbury, nor is it ours, that acne is a disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Yet, there appears to be more than enough supportive evidence to suggest that gut microbes, and the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract itself, are contributing factors in the acne process. Only well designed trials can determine what, if any, the degree of contribution might be.” (If this is the f irst time you are reading about the gut-skin-brain axis, you can refer back to my blog post on this subject, so you can have a better idea of this amazing connection.)

SO, this information is backed up by science! Can you believe this? Sleep and stress have a direct impact on our skin! Whenever you hear someone say that their skin is dry, dull and is always breaking out, ask them if they are stressed all of the time and if their sleeping habits are all over the place. Tell them that their gut microbiome and skin microbiome are always in sync! If sleep, stress and nutrition are off balance this will reflect in their skin, no doubt about it! (You will be the smartest person in the room if you mention this!, you are welcome!) I like to think of it like this, we are living beings, our skin is alive, our brain is alive, and our gut is alive. We have to listen to what these systems are telling us, are you always tired? are you always stressed? do you break out all the time? is your skin dry ? is your skull flaky ? are you always bloated? What is it that your skin and body telling you today ? If there is one thing you learn today, I would love for it to be, to listen to your body and skin. How does it look like? What is it telling you? Are you neglecting yourself or nourishing yourself? Lets learn how to listen to what our body and skin are telling us! I am yet to become an expert when it comes down to listening to my body, but hey, its never too late to start!

Sending lots of love, Alexia Reyes
