I’m gonna continue the story from last month’s issue about Chris and Tracy. A self-confessed “motor-head” sailing on the world’s only motorcycle rally on the high seas, this is Marc’s 18th time as the featured artist. He combines his love for high-tech machinery, passion for music, and extraordinary artistic talent to create incredible fine art.

Born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on January 29, 1960, Motor Marc is known around the motorized world as a fine artist and sculptor who captures the lifestyle we love. In high school he took auto shop as well as the visual art programs.

He has had a love affair with anything with a motor since he could walk and has a lifelong

coming as Marc became licensed by Hot Rod legend Boyd Coddington and Indian Motorcycles in 2009 and did gallery shows from coast to coast. His painting “Spirit of the Open Road” was a particular favorite.

In 2003, Marc was commissioned to do a painting for Harley-Davidson celebrating the company’s 100th Anniversary and Marc became an approved H-D artist. This led to no less a motorcycle legend than Willie G. Davidson granting Marc a commission to do paintings for Harley to be auctioned off in support of the Muscular Dystrophy RememberAssociation.The Discovery Channel’s American Choppers TV series? Marc was the licensed fine artist for their custom motorcycles and was asked to be part of Orange County Choppers’ American Tour in 2006. The non-stop action just kept

In 2010 Marc became a featured artist for the Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, producing memorable posters and programs. One of his prints for Barrett-Jackson was signed by automotive legend Carroll Shelby and Barry McGuire, fetching $90,000 from NASCAR team owner Rick Hendricks and the money was donated to the Darrell Gwynn Foundation supporting spinal cord injuries.

At about this time Marc became famous as a biker artist at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and was also a hit at the Rock Legends Cruise for his music fine art. In 2010 he introduced a new collection of licensed music fine art, “The Legends of Rock of Roll” beginning with his tribute to the Rolling Stones. Rock legends like Ronnie Woods, Mick Jones, Dusty Hill inspired Marc to continue this collection and lead him to be a licensed artist for Fender Musical Instruments Corporation to create a one of a kind masterpiece painting of 32 of the best legend Fender guitar players.

For many years, Motor Marc could be found painting away in his booth out at Black Hills Harley-Davidson during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally every August. In 2014, his Sturgis Gallery had expanded to over 100 titles or art and he hit record sales. The following year, his inspiring painting depicting all the two-wheeled fun of the ultimate rally was showcased at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame for 75th Sturgis Rally. Then for the 76th Rally, Marc commemorated the 75th anniversary of the completion of Mount Rushmore. He continued painting new pieces for each Sturgis Rally as part of his Legend Rider series, even during the pandemic. For the 80th Rally in 2020, he did three special paintings to add to his popular series. You can still find his amazing art showcased each year in Rapid City at the Black Hills Harley dealership.

In 2018, he created a painting honoring our veterans at Rolling Thunder 30. “Legend of Freedom” was unveiled in Washington, D.C. during Rolling Thunder and over 300 veterans signed this touching tribute. It was just one of many, many tributes to our military service people that Marc has been a proud part of. In 2021, he created the “Champions of Peace” painting honoring our World War II veterans and their stunning victory in winning the war. The noble painting includes ten veterans from the American, Canadian, and United Kingdom Armed Forces.

Or when I set up my gallery and a veteran walks past and stops in his tracts, mesmerized by my military art. Or how a husband places his blind wife’s hand over one of my embellished prints as he explains to her what he sees as tears fall from her eyes. My entire life I’ve tried to be the best version of myself. I’ve tried to help people in need and I feel like my art has given me an outlet to do that. My art is my freedom of expression, and it’s a great blessing to be able to make people feel joy from what I consider, a god given talent. I am so thankful to all who have enjoyed my work and I am truly blessed.”

I hate to say that I feel I have failed miserably, due to the fact or society is still on a downward slide. Our rights as Americans have slowly been sinking farther and farther into the abyss. The government, notice I didn’t say our government, due to the fact “our” government is suppose to be for the people and of the people, continues to violate and remove rights from us and a regular basis. Amusingly, you haven’t even had a say in the matter. How much more of your freedom are you willing to give up before you don’t have any? Prices are sky high and there’s no viable reason for if other than the rich stockpiling their own coffers while we pay their bills. Enough already. They are not only affecting our lives but in the process are taking away what we fought for our children to have. What will your children have to fight for or believe in? And old saying is you don’t miss what you never had. People, your are pissing away your children’s and this country’s future by leaving the political clown dynasties in office. People have become spoiled, complacent sheep and are being led to the slaughter. The saddest part is that they seem happy to do it.

Our politicians seem more preoccupied with bad mouthing and attacking each other while they let our country to spiral.

Backroads isn’t just busy at home. They’ve taken their show on the road to Daytona, Sturgis and now to Thunder Beach as they fuel up a new and exciting partnership with Indian Motorcycle of Panama City Beach. A new organization out of Kentucky, Backroads Of Appalachia, a 501c(3) non-profit has dreamed in a big waydevelop and deliver economic viability to the forgotten coal communities of East Kentucky through motorsports tourism. Not only are the communities they serve benefactors of their effort, but so is the riding community in the region. Over the last several months, BOA has partnered with local community leaders to create a myriad of events, drag/time trials on airport runways, off-road car races, hill climbs, charity and special fundraiser rides all to let people know that Kentucky is serious about what they have. And their latest, a mobile App that has over four thousand miles of yellow striped adventure featuring forty-four GPS Turn-By Turn Appalachian Trail Routes that are located throughout Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, Southwest Virginia, and Tennessee. “To say that being part of a multi-platinum, international touring rock band was a dream come true would be a vast understatement. No kid ever says to himself, ‘When I graduate I’m gonna move to Hollywood and become a Rock Star’ and thinks that it can come true. Well, truth be told, it didn’t for me,” Xavier Muriel tells us. “I was 34 and on my third trip back to the west coast before it actually

career.” An avid biker and custom motorcycle builder, we asked Xavier what led him to have such a love for bikes. “I’ve always been into motorcycles. My father bought be my first bike, a Honda MR, when I was just six-years-old. He brought that bike home one spring day along with his Harley-Davidson SX250 Enduro and my older brother’s Honda CR-125. I’ve been hooked ever since. Bikes have always been in my blood. Before I moved back to Los Angeles in 2004, I was working at a Custom Shop in Austin and had already built two bikes. So I was actually into Harleys way before I became the drummer in the band.”

Xavier tells us that was when he got onboard the custom bike building train. “Famed motorcycle photographer Michael Lichter asked me to be a part of his Sturgis Buffalo Chip Motorcycle Exhibit called ‘Passion Built,’ which was all about invited builders who had other careers, not building bikes as their main bread and butter. I built a sweet little bike that I named ‘Grace’ for Michael’s show and she went on to win Bike of the Year at the Easyriders Bike Show Tour in 2019. It also earned the Cycle Source 2020 Bike of the Year, and I won the 2020 Readers’ Poll Builder of the Year. That bike also took top honors at the Rat’s Hole show in Daytona and many more. So after long deliberation, I decided to make the jump to a legit biz by starting Providence Cycle Worx in Austin, Texas.”

Born to Ride asked Xavier to name the biggest honors he has achieved in his life so far. “Winning the Easyriders Bike of the Year in 2019 was definitely up there with all the accolades of being in Buckcherry. Being on the cover of Modern Drummer, which is the holy grail of drumming magazines as well as the gold and platinum records. Easyriders is the Holy Grail of chopper magazines. I’m Honored that my bike was the last bike to be Bike of the Year before the mag went away.”

“The first bike I ever customized was a 1982 FLH, stripped down to the frame and re-painted, powdercoated and I chromed everything that was possible. The paint was done by a thenunknown painter and builder named Joe Martin who used to work out of his garage.”

We asked Xavier how he got involved in building a giveaway bike for the biker cruise of the Caribbean known as the High Seas Rally. “I was turned onto the High Seas Rally from a former employee of the band whose husband works for the cruise company. Plus, another person I had toured with years back was the production manager for High Seas Rally. So after an initial phone call and then a visit to my shop, we all agreed on a vision to take it to the next level.”

When asked about the first bike he ever customized, Xavier tells us,

When I found out about the Dialysis Fund and what it was all about, my heart was totally in. As a person who has a family member on Dialysis, I know first-hand what they go through. So, needless to say, I threw the kitchen sink at this project, not so much as money being spent to buy the parts, but more in the labor-intensive parts I handmade for it. This bike features the best of both worlds, combining the looks of an old school chopper with the

technology found in some of the latest models.” When asked to tell us more about the bike that some lucky biker on the cruise will win, Xavier says, “It was built on a custom one-off frame by myself and Rick Bray of RKB customs and houses an S&S 80-inch Evo motor. There’s a Harley 6-speed transmission, a BDL two-inch open belt drive with custom belt guards, 60 spoke Black Bike wheels, a narrow glide front end, and a Paul Cox air ride. It has a one-off fuel tank, oil bag, bars, mid-controls, foot pegs, fender struts, and many more custom parts. All of the electrics are handled by a Bluetooth M-unit

which allows you to sync up the system to your phone, giving you access to readouts of miles per hour, RPMs and other features not found on traditional choppers. The killer paint was done by Jace at Fast Life Garage. She’s a looker, and more important, this girl is a Somerider!”

From start to finish there are numerous opportunities for bikers to meet and greet with one another. The first smiles come from the parking lot volunteers, and even there, in a parking lot, relations and friendships are often forged. There are riders that make it a point at annual events to park in the same parking lot every year because they know from experience there is a warm and happy welcome awaiting them. There is help finding a good parking spot based on the size of space needed. If it is a camping event, there is help to find where to set up, and sometimes bikers will even share a spot if there are more bikes than camping spots. I once had my 35-foot toy hauler share my spot with two tents, that was snug!

More than once there has been a biker with a mechanical challenge or having dropped his ride and needed to get up and running again. It warms my heart that the help needed is tended to immediately! While it is true that not all bikers have mechanical expertise, but in a small crowd there is almost always someone that can be of help.

In the Bible, in 3 John 1:5, it says, “Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, even though they are strangers to you.” This calls us to reach out to others and bless them, be they known or strangers. Jesus gave us the example in that He came for all people, that all may have life, and that they can have it through trusting Him as their

Savior.There’s a thought I’d like to challenge you to think about, “To get a friend, be a friend.” When we treat others with love and respect, it is returned to us. Why not get involved by volunteering today?

Going to these events is a lot like a homecoming, with a chance to reconnect with friends and acquaintances, and the opportunity to make new friends. This is because of a common bond in loving to ride motorcycles. What really makes these meetings special is the welcoming attitude of the volunteers, and the effort to give all attendees a great experience,

One of the things enjoyed by bikers is the opportunity to attend Open Houses, Annuals, Club events, and various other charities and fundraisers. These occasions can be found in almost every weekend, as well as many bike nights during the week.

If there is a more serious problem, such as an accident with serious injuries, folks can go to the hospital and comfort the injured and their loved ones. Sometimes the most important thing needed is a work of comfort or prayer, both of which can be provided. The volunteers are ready and willing to not only share pleasantries but will share a prayer with the riders if they need a blessing.
