funding sources are identified. The city has contracted with local firm Essenza Architecture. Final drawings and construction bids are due later this year with building to begin following the 2018 swimming season. Plans call for the renovated facility to open for summer 2019 season. Likewise, PRAB also approved the Boulder Reservoir Visitor Services Center Redevelopment plan. The final concept plan envisions a new Visitor Center replacing the existing bathhouse and administration building to provide an enhanced guest experience and improve reservoir operations. Construction plans are currently being developed, anticipating construction to begin fall 2018. Over the summer, staff began hosting public listening events seeking input on the reservoir’s South Shore Site Management Plan. The roughly 76-acre South Shore hosts about 300,000 annual visitors, from youth summer camps, rowers, paddlers and boaters to 35 major, annual athletic events. We encourage you to tell us what you’d like to see at the future Rez through Open Houses and online surveys. North Boulder Recreation Center’s Pools to Close for Renovation
Aquatic Venues Development Plans Taking Shape! The Parks Planning team is diving deeper into Boulder’s outdoor aquatic venue desires. Last year, the team conducted extensive public input on two of the community’s favorite destinations, Scott Carpenter Pool and Boulder Reservoir. In January, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) approved the Scott Carpenter Pool Replacement plan. The first phase of renovation will replace the existing lap pool with a new ten lane pool, include a renovated bathhouse, provide all-ages and abilities leisure amenities and general park improvements. Elements such as a retractable roof will be considered in future phases once additional

The pools at the North Boulder Recreation Center (NRBC) will be closed from Aug. 12 through October as we reseal the pools, install new play features and improve our pump systems as part of the NRBC Natatorium Renovation Project. Displaced swimmers are encouraged to visit the Spruce or Scott Carpenter outdoor pools or enjoy a swim at South Boulder Recreation Center or East Boulder Community Center.
PLEDGE to PLAY The PLAY Boulder Foundation, Boulder Parks and Recreation’s non-profit partner, provides fiscal support for our parks and recreation programs and facilities. PLEDGE to PLAY with two new opportunities this year that support critical capacity-building initiatives in access, environmental sustainability and community placemaking. From Aug. 11 to 20, come PLAY with us at McGuckins Hardware and “round-up” your purchase at the register - just in time for your back-to-school shopping. Then save the date to pledge to PLAY on Dec. 5 as this year the Foundation will take part in Colorado Gives Day - an annual statewide movement that celebrates and increases philanthropy in Colorado through online giving. Proceeds from both PLEDGE to PLAY opportunities support the foundation, parks, programs and people you love! For more information, visit playboulder.org.
TreeOpp Branches Out with the Center for ReSource Conservation Offerings Did you know you can now purchase new, locally cut and milled hardwood lumber and firewood from ReSource? This summer, the Center for ReSource Conservation (CRC) and Boulder Parks & Rec’s TreeOpp and Forestry unit have collaborated to offer new lumber milled from the city’s ash and oak trees available for sale at ReSource, the home of the CRCs reclaimed materials program. These trees required removal due to decline from Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) or other diseases. Priced to cover the cost of milling, transport and sales, this beautiful hardwood lumber and firewood will continue to be available if warranted by demand. The city is actively seeking sustainable opportunities to repurpose this fine wood, rather than turning it into wood chips. The two organizations hope this mutually beneficial platform increases wood utilization while enhancing EAB awareness. For more information about the TreeOpp program, visit TreeOpp.org. For information about CRC and ReSource, visit ConservationCenter.org.

It’s almost been a year since the launch of our “new” recreation management software system, Active.Net. The advance educational campaign prior to the November 2016 launch helped our community and staff get ahead of potential challenges during the high-volume registration times. We’ve heard from many customers about their positive experiences during the registration process. We’ve also heard our parks and recreation visitors appreciate the enhanced features ACTIVE offers like real-time information on class availability and schedule changes. However, we know we’ve just scratched the surface on the software’s capabilities. As the anniversary of the implementation approaches, a team is already exploring different features available with ACTIVE to help us better serve you, respond to customer feedback and improve process. Stay tuned and please share your feedback on your experience with ACTIVE so far.

iving in pet-friendly Boulder, you may think dog parks have always been a part of the Parks and Recreation landscape. In actuality, the city’s first “official” dog parks (as we know them today) appeared just 17 years ago. In August 1994, City Council directed the Parks and Recreation and Open Space Departments to collaborate on the development of consistent dog management practices. What developed over the next two and a half years of public outreach was more than just a recommended dog management plan, but the foundation for Boulder’s current dog parks. The vision included two or three fenced dog parks located in our larger parks across the city, including the one now at Valmont City Park. While the park’s concept plan suggested a permanent site for a fenced dog park on the undeveloped side of the park, need for utilities and lack of parking would have delayed access for too long. Instead, staff recommended development of a four-acre, temporary dog park north of Valmont Road. This recommendation was approved and in July 2000 a rough version of Valmont Dog Park was born. The temporary site proved popular and with community input, the permanent dog park was completed in 2012 with additions including water hydrants, shade, shelter, sand,

double-entry gates, a grassy area at the north end that can be closed off for dog training classes and events, and a fenced-in area for smaller pooches. If you visit Valmont Dog Park today, you and your furry best friend can enjoy fenced areas for both large and small dogs. The large area is about three acres and small area is about .25 acres. Dogs can be off leash in the dog park and do not need to be voice and sight trained; dogs must be on a leash in all other areas and adhere to dog park rules, which are posted at the park. Of course, visiting Valmont with your canine companion isn’t just about fun for your dog, there are lots of benefits for humans too! First, it gives you a chance to enjoy a bit of movement yourself in the fresh air and a chance to get your daily dose of Vitamin D. Next, your dog gets a chance to socialize, and you do as well; meet fellow pet owners and make new friends in the community. Finally, one of the best things about our furry family members is getting to see them enjoy life. Watching your pet having a good time is good for you, it makes you happy and helps you be in the moment – taking a break from life’s other stresses. For more information about Boulder’s dog parks, please visit boulderparks-rec.org
Valmont Dog Park
Did you know? • Valmont Dog Park has its own celebrity sightings – while visiting you may just catch sight of Kiss the Boxer! Kiss, rescued from a “kill shelter” in California, possesses a rare neurological condition that makes him unable to pull his tongue into his mouth. Now his silly smile and charming personality has made him a web-celeb with thousands of followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr. • The Valmont Dog Park hosted a city pilot project providing compostable bags and collection receptacles for dog waste. In fact, Valmont wasn’t just the first park in the city to promote this – but first in Boulder County as well. At the time of the pilot (in 2012), weekly waste collections ranged between 400 to 500 pounds and is now 900 pounds weekly. • The city now has four dog parks where you can bring your buddies to play. Each park has its own character and virtues. East Boulder Dog Park boasts both outstanding views and a beach with seasonal water access for water loving dogs. Foothills Dog Park has both views and access to nearby Open Space hiking trails and Howard Heuston offers lots of shade and plenty of turf. These parks are free and open to the public from dawn to dusk.

Small Group Swim Lessons Ages 3-6 Small Group classes provide a more personalized interaction with instructors, running in a semi-private format of no more than (3) students per instructor and are great for children new to the swim lesson setting. Instructors will focus on a personal lesson plan for each child and skills will vary by individual swimming ability.
Getting your child comfortable around the water as soon as possible can lead to a lifetime of swimming enjoyment and being safe around water.
Small Group Preschool Level 1
Small Group Preschool Level 2
(Ages 3-6) This is the class to take if your preschooler has not yet taken swimming lessons. This course will focus on introductory skills to help build his/her foundation in swimming while gaining confidence in the class structure. Students will be taught basic water safety skills and basic arm and leg movements to help develop comfort in the water. In addition, students will learn to enter and exit the water independently and float with support.
(Ages 3-6) Students will build upon the basic skills learned in Preschool 1 and begin to learn independent aquatic locomotion skills. Preschool 2 emphasizes independence in the skills learned in the first level. 8911

Instructors give clear demonstrations of the postures and emphasize detail, precision and alignment in the performance of postures (asana) and breath control (pranayama). Students are observed and, if necessary, adjusted to help them find their optimal alignment. Props, such as belts, blocks, and blankets, enable students to perform the asanas correctly, minimizing the risk of injury or strain, and making the postures accessible to both novices and regular practioners alike. Chi Kung (Age 14+) Qigong (also spelled Chi Kung) is a form of yoga with roots in ancient China. Its many benefits include physical health and vitality, emotional wellbeing, mental clarity, and the unfolding of our deepest potential. A regular qigong practice may, over time, reduce chronic pain, resolve anxiety/depression, and support rejuvenating sleep cycles. This course, perfect for beginners and more advanced practitioners alike, will introduce the joyful and powerful practice of qigong by exploring the ten stages of qi cultivation. Each class will combine breathing and visualization exercises with gentle movements that stretch muscles and tendons, and circulate qi (life force) through the meridians (channels of body awareness also used in acupuncture). By the end of the course, you will have learned ten life-affirming and health-enhancing qigong practices. 9112

Class Size
Limits have been placed on the size of some classes to assure quality instruction. Registration is first come, first served. Register early to ensure a place in the classes you want. Registration must be made prior to participation in any Parks and Recreation program or activity.

In an Emergency What’s Our Plan?
The city of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department operates many programs and facilities for the Boulder community. We know that under rare circumstances, extreme weather or other situations have the potential to impact our operations, facilities and patrons. In an emergency, staff will follow plans and procedures designed to ensure the safety of participants. A plan has been tailored to each specific site and facility we manage. In the event of an emergency requiring the relocation of participants, program leaders will communicate their actions and evacuation location (once practical) to department communication staff. This information will be uploaded to the city’s Website (www.bouldercolorado.gov) and be added to the city’s emergency information phone line at 303-441-4300 as soon as possible. If you have any questions about the Department’s emergency plans, please call 303-413-7200.

SPARK
I
n Fall 2016, Boulder Parks and Recreation’s Youth Services Initiative (YSI) program received a one-year grant for $24,892 from the Colorado Health Foundation to introduce the SPARK After School Physical Activity Program into programming for youth ages 6 to 18 years old. SPARK is a research-based program of San Diego State University Research Foundation which strives to create and implement programs promoting lifelong wellness. SPARK’s goal is to increase the quantity and quality of physical activity in youth lives as part of a healthy lifestyle and to build lifelong habits. They accomplish this goal by disseminating evidence-based physical education and after school programs to teachers and recreation leaders serving Pre-K through 12th grade students. Since 1995, SPARK has grown and today, its After School Program targets out-of-school physical activity programs such as those offered by Boulder Parks and Recreation. The SPARK after school philosophy is to include ALL youth, actively engage ALL youth and instill the love of lifelong movement in ALL youth. This aligns with the YSI mission to inspire youth and families from underrepresented communities to make healthy, caring and responsible choices through recreation, health and well-being opportunities as well as life skill development. Since receiving the grant last year, YSI staff have trained in the SPARK curriculum. The curriculum is helping train staff, develop the YSI mentor program and enhance collaboration with our community partners like Boulder Housing Partners and the “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Boulder County.
44
The team has also successfully started implementing program elements into the Getting Fit program. YSI’s goal is to to enhance the quality of recreation programming and physical activity so that 100 percent of YSI participants will experience at least 90 minutes of moderate to rigorous physical activity at least twice per week. This will result in a 50 percent increase to current participant physical activity exposure. This summer, Boulder Parks and Recreation (BPR) in collaboration with Boulder Valley School District (BVSD), and Boulder Housing Partners (BHP), offered SPARK After Care to provide a full day of summer learning and camp, Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m during the five weeks of summer break. BVSD, BPR and BHP all have the same target kids attending the program and the goal was to have all families register to benefit from the collaboration and the new curriculum. Each week, participants ages 5 to 14 enjoyed fun activities and theme days, as well as making tons of new friends! By the end of the summer, over 150 youth were served.
Volunteerism
Volunteering for Over 20 Years, Mei-Huei Pan is still a Child at Heart.
I
f you peek your head into the North Boulder Kids’ Corner childcare on a Thursday morning, you will see volunteer Mei-Huei Pan laughing with the small children. She may be tossing a ball gently in the air to a toddler or warmly cuddling with a baby, whatever the task, she is smiling. This year, Mei (pronounced May) celebrates 20 years of volunteering with the City of Boulder Recreation Centers. Earlier this year, Mei was also awarded the 2017 Barbara Magill Volunteer Recognition. While Mei does not remember the exact month that she joined the Boulder Parks and Recreation team member in 1997, she vividly recalls the exact date she first arrived in the United States from Taiwan: January 16, 1983, only six days after her 43rd birthday. Her first stop was Maryland, and her first memory was of 19 inches of snow. Mei remembers thinking “America is full of snow! I am cold!” A few months later, Mei arrived in Boulder during the spring to be with her five adult children. For eight years, the family owned and operated Tra Ling’s Oriental Cafe on the Hill, where Mei liked to work in the kitchen. After selling the business in 1995, three of her daughters pursued their culinary dreams by starting Sisters Pantry. Initially, Mei would help them out at the local Farmer’s Market and still helps occasionally at their kitchen in Lyons. She is particularly fond of crimping the dumplings. One of Mei’s four daughters encouraged her to start volunteering at the recreation centers. Mei remembers an interview with Steve Whipple, the recreation manager at the time. She was shy to speak because she did not know much English, but knew she could communicate with the children. Mei said she doesn’t need to talk with the children - she has other ways to communicate, just like the non-verbal babies she most likes to watch.
Mei-Huei Pan has been a warm and welcoming presence at the North Boulder Rec Center childcare for more than 20 years.
Mei’s favorites are the babies. And she seems to be their favorite too! She has nurtured many children over the years and is always surprised at how big they’ve grown when they return for a visit. She has seen generations of kids pass through the centers. She has also seen many staff come and go. In fact, she recently remarked that she now works with the daughter of a former colleague at the center. At five-feet and 100-pounds, Mei may be tiny in stature but has the biggest heart you’ll ever encounter. Ever cheerful, Mei spreads happiness wherever she goes. Staff describes Mei as kind, gentle, soothing and “an angel from heaven.” We all love her and are so grateful for all her years of service, as are the children whose lives and hearts she touches.
Her dedication won Steve over, and she secured a spot in the childcare room beginning in 1997. Ever since, Mai dedicates two hours each week to the childcare, only taking a few breaks to visit her native Taiwan.

Then & Now
Christensen Park An attorney’s letter, dated September 1989, notified the City of Boulder that a recently deceased resident named Jean Louise Christensen bequeathed 59 percent of her estate to the city for the creation of a park. The surprising donation was also a substantial one of over $400,000 and coincided with the development of a three-acre park located within the newly developed Noble Park/Kings Ridge subdivision, north of Valmont Road between 47th Street and Airport Roads. Today, Christensen Park, located at 3100 Kings Ridge Boulevard, is nearing 25 years old and recently received an extensive renovation. Tucked away, a block off Valmont Road, the refreshed park sports a fun nature play area with a seasonally functioning water pump, log bridge and natural wood “kid cave,” in addition to the latest playground features for 3-12-year-olds and new irrigation system. So who was Ms. Christensen? What little we know about Jean comes largely from her August 1989 obituary and a few notes from interviews with her cousin and friends. Jean was born in Manville, Wyoming on January 17, 1915, where her father was a medical doctor and the town’s first mayor. Manville started as a small supply and shipping hub for several large livestock ranches when the railroad arrived in 1886. Its population boomed to more than 1,000 when oil was discovered in the 1920s. Less than 100 residents live in Jean’s birthplace today.
46
During WWII, Jean worked in her father’s Longview, Wash. medical office and served as a Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services). Before moving to Boulder in the 1950s, Jean attended Washington State College and earned a bachelor’s degree from Linderwood College in Missouri. A private person, Jean loved wildlife and gardening. She never married, living alone at 502 Highland Avenue for many years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Philharmonic Guild, Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), Business Professional Women’s Club and Boulder Republican Women’s Club. Jean passed away at age 74 and was buried with her mother (Mary L. Cook-Christensen) and father (John) at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Lakewood, Colo. Donations from her estate also helped the American Cancer Society and American Heart Fund. A plaque at the park, dedicated in August 1993 reads: “For the enjoyment and pleasure of the citizens of Boulder, in memory of her parents, Dr. John Christensen and Mrs. Louise Christensen.” Today, the park’s beautiful canopy and the wide variety of trees are due to years of generous donations and plantings by Daughters of the American Revolution’s Arapahoe Chapter, and organization once chaired by Jean. While a park had been planned for the site before Jean’s gift, Christensen Park would not be the same without her generous contribution.
