What’s Happening Winter in Boulder!

Fences Down on NEW Civic Area Park!

Explore and learn more about the latest news, project updates and fun events at Boulder Parks & Rec this season.

We’re excited to announce the completion of Phase One of Civic Area construction - our “park at the core.” After years of research, public input and construction, Boulder’s first Civic Area enhancements are ready to enjoy! Much of the park west of Broadway closed in Nov. 2016 for construction of the $8.7 million improvement project funded by the 2014 voter-passed 2A Community, Culture and Safety Tax. On Monday, Nov. 20 – the community celebrated “Fences Down Day” on the 13-acres stretching between Broadway and 9th Street between Canyon Boulevard and Arapahoe Avenue. The newly completed park areas enhance visitor safety through better line-of-sight visibility, nighttime lighting, and safer access to a variety of uses along Boulder Creek and the Boulder Creek Path. It also presents new opportunities to connect the community with nature through various gathering and nature play spaces. A much anticipated children’s play area near the library will open once the safety surfacing is installed. Please follow Civic Area social media for news of the kid-friendly feature’s opening.

Are You Ready for Snow Much Fun? Grab a cup of hot cocoa or gingerbread latte, then stroll through the sparkle and shine at Central Park and across Broadway in Boulder’s Civic Area this winter season. The city will switch on the winter holidays by brightening the park with more than 225,000 LED lights on Sunday, Nov. 19, as partner Downtown Boulder illuminates Pearl Street Mall. The Civic Area lights will be on every evening through February. Mark your calendar for these Snow Much Fun festivities: • Winter Skate Outdoor Ice Rink The rink, presented by Boulder Creek Events, will operate through February; for Winter Skate information, visit bceproductions.com/winterskate. • FREE Community Ice Skate | Sat., Dec. 9 from 2 – 4 p.m. Lace up your skates and take to the ice on this afternoon presented by Boulder Parks and Recreation. • Snow Much Fun Winter Festival | Sat., Dec. 16 Participate in craft workshops with BMoCA, enjoy BVSD musical performances, ice dancing shows, holiday refreshments and more. Learn more about all the Snow Much Fun activities at snowmuchfun.org.

Due to the season, this was a “soft” opening with more delights planned for spring as we plant new flowers and complete landscaping and irrigation. Please come visit the new park, while respecting off-limit areas where new landscaping needs time to get established. And enjoy the newest addition to the Snow Much Fun lights which will illuminate west of Broadway for the first time!

Taking Care of Boulder’s Urban Forest

Guards’ Swift Response, CPR/AED Revive Swimmer This fall, two lifeguards at Spruce Pool responded to an adult patron suffering a major medical event while swimming laps. He was rescued from the pool unconscious by guards Emily Givens and Mike Liegey. Reacting immediately, the guards activated the pool’s emergency action plan, administered oxygen, conducted CPR, and utilized an AED to deliver the electrical impulses which ultimately revived him. Emily’s and Mike’s quick response and carefully selected rescue devices drew upon their extenisve training. Though they knew every minute that passed dramatically decreased his chances for survival, they maintained their composure and performed expertly. They credit their performance to the excellent training and preparation they received from BPR Aquatics staff and Boulder Fire and Rescue. For the past two years, Boulder Fire Department has provided scenario-based training to all BPR lifeguards. In June, all fulltime and seasonal lifeguards received two days of training. The goal was to remove the “fear factor” and provide the skills necessary to identify and respond to emergency situations quickly and appropriately. In addition to their successful, life-saving rescue, Mike and Emily exemplified several of the city’s employee values: Collaboration, Customer Service, Respect, and Integrity. Please join us in sharing our thanks for the exceptional effort put forward by Emily and Mike, and for the well-trained indoor and outdoor aquatics teams that protect our swimming community every day. If this story inspires you, please consider joining our team of professional guards and swim instructors. Flexible hours, competitive wages, great training and benefits. See pg. 18 for training opportunities.

Boulder’s urban forest (all the public and private trees within city limits) face many threats from invasive pests, diseases and climate change. In response, the Parks and Recreation Department’s Urban Forestry unit is nearing completion of an Urban Forest Strategic Plan (UFSP), a long-term plan for the sustainability of our public and private trees. The draft plan, crafted from input gathered from both experts and the community, will be shared with residents in early 2018 with the aim of educating the community and finalizing the plan. If you are interested in Boulder’s trees and urban forest, please visit BranchingOutBoulder.org for more information on the UFSP and the next public meeting.

Featured Park

Did you know? • During summer and fall months, you may catch a glimpse of some of Boulder’s popular mutton mowers as goats are often called in to gobble up invasive weeds. • The slackline obstacle course at Tantra Park is the first course of its type in Boulder. • While it may be tempting, sledding is prohibited at Tantra Park. Instead, bring your sled to one of Boulder’s officially sanctioned parks for sledding: Scott Carpenter Park, Harlow Platts Park or Foothills Community Park.

Tantra Park

B

oulder’s neighborhood parks are the backbone of our 1,800-acre urban parks system, providing a truly local recreational and social gathering place for neighbors. As we renew and refresh each park, we gather input from nearby residents to ensure each reflects the surrounding community allowing them to create their unique “sense of place.” Tantra Park, located at 46th and Hanover in south Boulder, was initially acquired as four separate parcels between 1963 to 1973. It was named Tantra in 1973 by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) after hearing from the active neighborhood coalition that the “essence of Tantra is enjoyment” and that the concept suggests people live life to the fullest, “actively enjoying the world around you.” In 2016, the Parks and Recreation’s annual Capital Investment Program identified Tantra Park as a priority renovation due to the age and condition of its amenities. Park planning staff sought input and ideas through an extensive public engagement process prior to developing a concept plan for Tantra. The input process and plan were finalized and renovation began this year. Simultaneously, there was an emerging desire for public slacklining options in Boulder. Slacklining involves balancing and moving along a length of nylon webbing suspended above the ground between two fixed points (often trees). Until Dec. 2016, the activity was prohibited in Boulder parks due to an ordinance aimed at protecting public trees by prevented anything from being attached to them. Inspired by the climbing community, slacklining has grown in popularity among all ages and demographics. After working with the local slacklining community, a January 2017 City Manager’s Rule made it possible to slackline in several parks using specific trees. During the public input for Tantra Park’s renovation, some community members suggested incorporating a slackline course into the design. The proposed course included four steel posts to support a series of five slacklines ranging from 24-foot, beginner lines to 100-foot, advanced lines. The design also complemented Tantra’s new play structure and offered a progressive learning curve to provide an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to explore a fun, emerging sport, make new friends and improve their balance and fitness. When it was learned the slackline elements would cost more than the project’s budget allowed, neighbors activated again, partnering with a local slackline company and launching a crowd-funding campaign with support from the city’s Resilient Boulder Team to raise the additional $2,700 needed. The renovation and new slackline course at Tantra are projected to open in December. Come check out our latest park renewal and experience the latest example of a great neighborhood park collaboration. For more information about Tantra Park, please visit Boulderparks-rec.org

These are confident, high performing young community members both on and off the stage. his season, Kinesis Dance will celebrate the graduation of five senior dancers (from L to R): Alexandria Keyes, Nadia Bogusky, Anna Warbritton, Julianna Birkenkap, and Zoe Barley (each holding and surrounded by a dozen younger dance students these seniors have helped mentor and train). Audiences of the annual Holiday and Spring Dance Concerts have watched these amazing young ladies literally grow up on our stages, sharing their artistry and love of dance. What most residents don’t see is how the years of progressive dance training have enhanced not only their

As these graduating seniors illustrate, what may begin as a child’s exploration of movement, music and rhythm (and a parent’s desire for structured after-school physical activity and social development), may contribute to the foundation of a successful journey through high school and beyond. Not an easy achievement! Please celebrate youth dance by registering your child in a winter dance program, joining in our January Dance Days offerings or wishing these seniors all the best at one of their final community dance performances on Dec. 9-10 or April 14-15, 2018.

Volunteerism Groups Contribute to Better Boulder’s Parks Through Volunteerism

Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo brought out a mighty group of volunteers to remove ten bags of weeds and distribute eight cubic yards of mulch at the North Boulder Recreation Center.

V

olunteer Services is always looking for ways to increase community involvement through quality volunteer opportunities with Parks and Recreation. This year we launched the Park Partner Program to provide organized groups an opportunity to commit to working with Parks and Recreation on a yearly basis. As a Park Partner, groups get first choice of their volunteer projects which increases our ability to match the group with projects that meet their volunteer goal(s). Park Partners commit to volunteering for a minimum of one Parks and Recreation volunteer project each year. The first year of this program has been a huge success. This year we engaged six different Park Partners in 13 projects, and 287 volunteers participated in the program! You can learn more about each of our Park Partners and their impact below.

Xilinx

Longmont-based Xilinx, brought 29 of their finest staff to restore two miles of trail along Coot Lake and remove ten bags of weeds from Tom Watson Park. And that’s not all; they also put down eight cubic yards of landscape fiber in the playground.

Aimco

Despite the “cold feet” Aimco staff got after a spring snow storm hit right before their project distributing 30 cubic yards of landscape material around the Greenleaf Park playground, they still showed up at Dog Dayz this fall to help keep 500 dogs and their guardians safe at Scott Carpenter Pool! Target

In addition to removing 30 cubic yards of junk at the Boulder Reservoir, Target provided food and equipment for participants at our “Prep the Rez” volunteer event in April. The Cheesecake Factory

On a rainy day this spring, The Cheesecake Factory rallied their staff to plant five trees at the Harlow Platts Park in South Boulder. They also planted 90 flats of flowers on the Pearl Street Mall!

10

Zayo

Zayo staff helped beautify the Boulder Reservoir by weeding ten volleyball courts and planting 1,160 plants at the reservoir entrance. Their teams also trimmed 20 feet of juniper bushes at Foothills Community Park and sorted 15 crates of tulip bulbs from the Pearl Street Mall. We are so appreciative of the time and commitment of our Park Partners. We look forward to growing the program in the coming years and having the opportunity to work alongside groups like these to make a positive impact on our community. To learn more about this program or become a Park Partner, please visit BPRvolunteer.org or contact Cassy Bohnet, volunteer coordinator, at bohnetc@bouldercolorado.gov. We look forward to partnering with you in 2018!

Community Connections Taking Steps to Better Health Boulder Parks and Recreation (BPR) is on a mission to connect the community to great opportunities for health and well-being. This year, we’ve collaborated with Boulder Community Health (BCH) to provide community members with a simple and direct path to better health. It’s called “Walk with a Doc” (WWAD), a national program we’ve made local and brought to Boulder’s parks. Each monthly walk is FREE and consists of a brief, informative health talk by a leading local physician, a 5-minute warm up/stretch led by a certified Parks and Rec trainer, and a well-marked walking route around a scenic park. Participants select how far they walk, ranging from a half-mile to two miles. BCH, AMR Rescue and Boulder Fire-Rescue staff are all on hand to support the walk, answer questions and provide free blood pressure and basic screenings. Our first walks this summer and fall have attracted between 100-200 participants and a wide range of ages and abilities. Walking is an excellent way to reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol, manage weight and improve your mood among other benefits. According to the Surgeon General of the United States – walking is one of the single most important things we can do for our health and boasts the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity! WWAD was started by an Ohio cardiologist in 2005. He recognized the health value of not just prescribing exercise to his patients, but actually encouraging and leading them in it. Since then, the program has grown through grassroots efforts to over 300 chapters worldwide. In addition to the many health benefits of walking, participants meet new neighbors and create new social connections, enhancing the health benefits of each walk. For BPR and BCH, partnering to bring the program to Boulder demonstrated the positive impact that can result when two well-respected organizations work together to make health and well-being accessible to all community members. The program requires no special gear – just a comfortable pair of shoes and an hour of your time. BCH provides the doctor, BPR provides the beautiful parks and paths, and you – our community members - provide the momentum to keep this program moving forward!

Our inaugural WWAD event on July 8 attracted almost 200 participants to East Boulder Community Park. Led by Cardiologist Dr. Nelson Trujillo, participants learned about the health benefits of walking before enjoying a scenic stroll around the park. One comment overheard in the crowd was that the event “felt like the first Bolder Boulder!” Walks are held in different parks located throughout the city each month to offer convenient opportunities for all community members to participate. Please join us for the final outdoor walk of the year: • Sat., Dec. 9: “Walking and Happiness” with Dr. Mark Wisner at North Boulder Park Or these two indoor, winter walks: • Sat., Jan. 13, Flatiron Crossing Mall (Broomfield), “Weight Control” • Sat., Feb. 10, CU Boulder’s new indoor track, “Diabetes and Heart Disease” All walks are FREE and start at 8 a.m. Grab your sneakers, join the fun, and take the first steps for a healthier you. For more information and the latest WWAD schedule, please visit bch.org/walkwithadoc.

Mind/Body Chi Kung

Qigong (also spelled Chi Kung) is a form of yoga with roots in ancient China. Its many benefits include physical health and vitality, emotional wellbeing, mental clarity, and the unfolding of our deepest potential. A regular qigong practice may, over time, reduce chronic pain, resolve anxiety/depression, and support rejuvenating sleep cycles. This course, perfect for beginners and more advanced practitioners alike, will introduce the joyful and powerful practice of qigong by exploring the ten stages of qi cultivation. Each class will combine breathing and visualization exercises with gentle movements that stretch muscles and tendons, and circulate qi (life force) through the meridians (channels of body awareness also used in acupuncture). By the end of the course, you will have learned ten life-affirming and health-enhancing qigong practices. 9692

Why Register Now?

Why wait – when you can lead the way? TODAY is the best day to register for the classes you want. Why? Because under-enrolled classes get cancelled and might be dropped entirely to make space for more popular programs. Registering early is the best way to prevent your favorite class from cancellation. This year, we’ll be increasing our adherence to minimum enrollment standards to enhance our efficient use of staff, space and funding. Under-enrolled classes will be cancelled prior to the first session. Thanks for registering today!

Class Size

Limits have been placed on the size of some classes to assure quality instruction. Registration is first come, first served. Register early to ensure a place in the classes you want. Class enrollments are reviewed 3-5 days prior to the first class and those with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled. Registration must be made prior to participation in any Parks and Recreation program or activity.

Group Discount Program

Discounted rates are available for businesses and organizations with five or more employees. For information call Christy Munoz at 303-413-7259 or visit BoulderParks-Rec.org

In an Emergency What’s Our Plan?

The city of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department operates many programs and facilities for the Boulder community. We know that under rare circumstances, extreme weather or other situations have the potential to impact our operations, facilities and patrons. In an emergency, staff will follow plans and procedures designed to ensure the safety of participants. A plan has been tailored to each specific site and facility we manage. In the event of an emergency requiring the relocation of participants, program leaders will communicate their actions and evacuation location (once practical) to department communication staff. This information will be uploaded to the city’s Website (www.bouldercolorado.gov) and be added to the city’s emergency information phone line at 303-441-4300 as soon as possible. If you have any questions about the Department’s emergency plans, please call 303-413-7200.

Access for All

Boulder Parks and Recreation is committed to supporting and complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you require a special accommodation, please notify us at least two weeks in advance of an activity or class. For more information, contact Sherri Brown at 303-441-4933. We welcome all residents regardless of race, color, disability, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation or religion to enjoy our programs, services and facilities.

Then & Now

Boulder’s Parks and Recreation Guide: Embracing the Future. Celebrating the Past. Now. This year, we’re changing the way we deliver our news and program offerings to you. We’ll be relying a bit less on printed paper and postage – and a bit more on email and social media messaging to drive community members to our robust online resources and recreation program registration system. What’s changing? First, the Winter Guide which you’re reading now will be mailed to homes later in December than previous years. This shift will allow us to save postage costs by combining the Winter Guide with the New Year’s Fitness Sale mailer. However, winter session registration (for classes and programs beginning in January) will open as usual the first Tuesday in December (Dec. 5), and we’ll share the word through facility and electronic messaging to alert those wishing to register early. Next, this spring, we’ll publish our Summer Camp Guide and open camp registration earlier (February, instead of March). Also coming in March is the department’s first combined Spring/ Summer Parks and Rec Guide. Registration opens for both sessions Tuesday, March 6. Why these changes now? A year ago, we asked BPR Guide recipients and facility users how they obtain department news and information. We received more than 500 responses and learned that you’re increasingly using the web, email and social media prompts to access our latest news and information, including the digital version of the Guide. We heard you! So, starting with this winter edition, we’re reducing our print mailings from six in 2016 to five in 2017 to four in 2018. How can you stay informed? The best way to ensure you’re getting priority access to the latest news and program offerings is share your current email address with us at BoulderParks-Rec.org. If you’re active on Facebook or Twitter, follow us there. Finally, we’ll continue to mail three BPR Guides a year to all active patrons at least two to four weeks prior to the start of each session. Then. Our earliest archives of printed department program offerings dates to the late 1960s and consists of large, doubledside printed sheets folded down to 4.5 inches by 10 inches. They contained approximately 30 activity offerings. Registration was

via mail or in person at the former Crossroads shopping mall (currently the 29th Street retail district). The only recreation center listed was located at 1125 Pine Street, Boulder’s first library building and current site of Boulder Library’s Carnegie Library for Local History! By the mid-1970s, the guide had expanded to an eight-page newspaper tabloid featuring 70 plus program listings and a small map sponsored by McDonalds. The population of Boulder was nearly 70,000. Over the years, offerings changed to reflect residents’ interests. Back then they included a small sprinkling of sports/fitness programs along with some bygone gems such as Audubon films, belly dancing, banjo lessons, bike repair, candlecraft, cartooning, dollmaking, flower arranging, home decorating, Origami, psychic sciences, table tennis, and weaving. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Boulder had two operating recreation centers (North and South) and the guide grew to a 40- to 50-page booklet mailed to Boulder residents. The East Boulder Community Center came online in 1992 and boosted the page count once again. That same year, 25 years ago, the guide sought input for the department’s “Recreation in Boulder in 25-50 years” vision. One of the items for “what might be important for our future” was the “use of electronic media to bring programs into home.” The future is here. After decades of labor-intensive, “old-fashion” pre-press guide paste-ups using expensive typeset galleys and halftone photos, guide production was transformed into desktop published and electronically delivered pre-press files around 2000. This saved the department time, effort and money. Today, use of mobile electronics and high-speed internet are again transforming the way residents seek, consume and respond to information. What’s next on the horizon, or just over it and out of sight?
