love thy neighborhood an attempt to build a community P5 with Peter Defesche, Arjen Oosterman, Hein van Lieshout

The assignment of this intense project was to design a new piece of city in the Overamstel district in Amsterdam. Beforehand, we visited Beirut, home to neverending and highly complex conflict. Some issues are caused by the urban politics, others can directly be linked to the urban fabric and (lack of) public space. Some issues are going to be European anytime soon. My design tries to prevent social fragmentation and instead get the best out of a diverse society. Parallely I deepened and summarized my knowledge about communal living in my O5 paper „Communal Actitecture“.

„The government is not interested in civil communication.“ „Thank God we have army.“ „We have good food!“ Quotes of our conversation partners in Beirut

Beirut taught me that no matter how different people and groups are from each other, there will be a common denominator: Shared values, motives and perspectives; but also spatial features. They act as glue to hold together random strangers and make social interaction happen.

Within the borders of living anonymously in the city and the opposite, to live quasi surveiled in an intolerant village community, I try to find an answer to how architecture can contribute to a feeling of belonging. Before moving to the cities, people were part of smaller groups. More and more originally warm, intimate and

social human beings will live in accumulations of strangers in the future, isolated and lonely, lost in scale. With my design proposal for a neighborhood in an overlooked area in Amsterdam South East, I want to find the balance between the freedom of the individual and the responsibility of a group member.

In order to grant freedom and flexibility to everyone, the area is kept diverse in sizes of blocks, proportions of streets, programme and use in both the public and private domain. Differently scaled blocks and streets, diversely and precisely designed courtyards and places ensure everyone to chose a spot they prefer. The key to make the building of a community happen lies in the public domain; literally space where people can communicate, meet, see and notice others. A central piazza as well as a busy street are characteristic and

essential for an urban atmosphere. A street surrounded by diverse functions that is designed for dwelling and traversing will enable unplanned encounters during all times and make neighbors out of strangers. It is the meeting point for members of all layers of society. At the same time, the streetscape and courtyard surrounding the dwellings are narrowing down the individual´s radius and thus familiarizing them with those living nearby. In order to add to a community, each member has to feel well. On a spatial level, this is achieved by

keeping the human scale (the proportions and sizes of the houses, streets, courtyards and places) and simply good design (varied facades, materials of high quailty). Privacy is granted for each within their houses and own rooftop gardens. Knowing your neighbors and immediate surroundings contributes to a feeling of security. Owning your dwelling (the houses are realized by different privately owned and social initiatives rather than large-scale developing companies) and the granted use of the encroachment zone will give ownership and thus responsibility to the tenants.

The new Amsterdam Fair A new city hall for Amsterdam With Lorien Beijaert + Wouter Kroeze

The new Amsterdam fair captures two striking characteristics of the city: the traditional markets and the night life. Representing the past and the future, food and music, it is created for and brings together all Amsterdammers. Glued together by a common, century old material (brick), the building unites a diverse public programme. It houses two mayors: The “day“ and the “night mayor“. Linking two diverse squares on busy Vijzelgracht and cosy Weteringbuurt, the market stretches below the building. Offering lunch and a wide range of goods in the evening hours, it makes up the centrepiece. The volumes of tower and council chamber / club give a characteristic form and contain the public functions. Those are wedding halls, public rooms, assembly spaces, exhibition area and the council chamber that doubles as a night club. As a skin, a two-sided façade of brick unites the building parts: The outer façade represents the power of democracy and the history of the city´s inhabitants and is made of re-used, heterogenic material. Although partly raised over the surrounding urban fabric, the city hall is part of it but stands out in dignity. The space within the wings of the building is framed by a minimally detailed façade of long, thin brick and opens up as entrée and dwelling space. Inside, the functions are distinguished by night and day. The rooms of the diverse functions create atmospheres inspired by their behaviour within light and dark, large and small, loud and silent, public and private. A simple arrangement of programme and several points of access and circulation grant orientation and access to all parts.

Hortus Conclusus Co-housing in a monument stolp farm in the Beemster polder with Anouk Vogel

The Renaissance layout of the Beemster polder in Noord-Holland follows the golden section in scaling down its entity.

Bit by bit, a human scale is created - through the introdruction of a quare street grid that turns into plots, enclosed gardens...

... even downsizing into chambers within the garden and within the Stolp farm itself, creating a gradient of open to private.

This character of privacy is enhanced as design theme within both the garden and the building.

Due to their restricted size and often monumental status, more and more traditional North Holland Stolp farms (stolpboerderij) disappear. While the housing market becomes more exclusive, this project studies the possibility to convert the Stolp “De Eenhoorn into co-housing.

The Orchard is a dense appartment complex on a prominent spot of the newly planned Sluisbuurt. Reacting to the surroundings and the building regulations, a community for both humans and animals is created. The result is a terraced structure surrounding a courtyard that responds to current issues as obesity, urban lonelyness and shrinking habitats.

* * Renovation + modification Old University, Basel (Amrein Giger Architekten)

During my last year of the bachelor studies, I spent six months in the Swiss city of Basel, where I worked for amrein giger architekten. Looking back, this was the office I felt integrated best because I was challenged the most. The main focus lay on the

Project architect: Ruth Giger

renovation of an medieval university building just above the Rhine river in the centre of Basel.

Phases: Technical design, implementation / management I supported two other architects with the construction drawings and details in different scales (please find enclosed a reference

letter for details). This included regular site visits to measure parts of the interior as well as a lot of organizational work (dispatching submissions, controlling offerings) and contacting external technical planners + local authorities (i.e. manufacturers, building engineers, fire safety planner etc).

But this also enabled me to dive deep into the details of Dutch housing (spatial conditions and the necessary installations in the floorplans; security destrictions of the facade; downscaling the huge mass via visual tricks; materializing the athmospheres of inside versus outside block....).

Basisschool Knotwilg met KDO + adaptieve ruimte, Amsterdam (Urban Echoes) Client: Stichting Bijzonderwijs, Directie Knotwilg, Partou Kinderopvang, DeStock Project architect: Jolijn Valk Phases: final design, technical design Reference: Jolijn Valk

Basisschool De Knotwilg is a new construction within a re-designed block dedicated to education in Gaasperdam in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. With space for nine (and possibly more) classes, a daycare, flexible-use spaces and a gym, it will be a part and landmark of the whole neighborhood. During the six months at Urban Echoes, I was involved in the DO + TO process. My job covered the interlap of final and technical design. Design ideas (details in the facade, the interior, material and colorscheme) are made up by one of us and I would draw it up in 3D. In order to bring the concept to a holistic design throughout the whole building, these studies specify the outcomes, possibilites and possible changes. Communication was a key factor in our practice and working procedure. Thus everybody is involved in designing and discussing. I was responsible for the 3D model of the whole project. While studying the different aspects I used this model as well as methods of physical modeling, sketching, visualizing, form- and material studies. Additionally I created visuals (perspective views + axonometries both interior + exterior) for presentations with the clients which we then also used to elaborate spatial- and colour studies etc. Facade studies and certain areas of the interior (the speellokaal on the ground floor; the directors´ room; the clusterruimte on the first floor with working spaces and a spiral staircase to the greenhouse on the roof) were of special importance. The nature of the project ensured that I learn a lot about the social and spatial aspects of schools and their importance in different scales. As of joining this team, my passion for material was further elaborated to become my insertably applicable tool. I also learned a lot about the meaning and use of color.
